I bought this vehicle at drivetime in pittsburgh (north hills) with 36,000 miles. The engine had a loud sound from the moment that I took it off the lot. I was told "that is how vws sound". Progressively it has got worse, now I have an estimate to replace a timing chain and camshaft with only 82,987 miles. This is insane. It has always been bad, and I am furious.

To whom it may concern: I wanted to follow-up and discuss a recent incident. On April 19th 2019 our 2009 vw Passat was in our garage as this is the usual location we park our cars. On the 18th we completed yard work and nothing out of the norm was noted as we completed the yard work at around 8pm and nothing was noted to be abnormal. Around 4 am on the 19th my spouse and I were awoken to a loud pop sound. This sound was unusual to us. Shortly after the pop sound there panic alarm could be heard that waned out in about 30 seconds. My husband went to the garage and was met with black and pressure like force against the garage door. We immediately evacuated the home and called the fire department. At the time were not sure what caused the smoke but once the fire fighters arrived were told the vw Passat was on fire. The fire marshall reported to us that it was possibly electrical in nature. I wanted to touch based with vw pertaining this matter in an effort to save others lives. Our garage has been damaged as well as the vw atlas was damage from the fire. My concern is that the outcome could have been far worse. My vw Passat had was driven the day of the 18th with no concerns. I am concerned that another person could be gravely harmed if this issue is not addressed. I am a vw customer that enjoys the overall product and wish excellence and quality for the product. Vw Passat tdi 2013: currently has a tad under 64,000 miles. Driving the car and the car makes awful noise and shuts off. The car gets towed to the vw dealership and I am informed that it is the high pressure fuel pump and the repair is between $5000-$6000. The dealership checked the fuel and verified that I had appropriate diesel in the car and mentioned that vw has had problems with the diesel fuel "sold in the us" and it is causing the problem. The car is just over the 60,000 mile warranty and it is one of the cars in the buyback settlement. When I inquired, they said my buyback fee would be significantly reduced if I do not pay for the repair as they will take it out of the settlement offer. Investigating a bit further, this is a problem that they had with previous year models, and is also something that appears to be happening with other owners of 2013 tdi's. I am left with a car that does not work to due manufacture defect. I am left with a car that they claim they will pay less for at the buyback because the car is not running, even though it is due to their defect. In short, I have a car that does not work, that is part of a major us government lawsuit settlement, and that requires $6,000 to repair because a part they placed on the car sent metal shards through the fuel system. As a consumer, I am left helpless. I bought a car believing the company to be honest, they were not. Now they will not even stand behind their faulty manufacturing defects.

We recently purchased a brand new 2013 vw Passat from crestmont vw, pompton plains, NJ. The car drove extremely well for the first few weeks. Shortly thereafter, there were loud beeping and warning sounds from the dashboard control panel and the car started to lose speed. Upon vw suggestion, we took it to crestmont service dept. It appears there was motor oil spewing all over the engine. A week later there were loud noises emanating from the roof area every time the vehicle negotiated a bump in the road. Once again crestmont vw service dept. Examined the car and they determined the entire sunroof panel had to be dismantled in order for additional insulation could be added to the entire roof, to dampen the sounds during normal, cursory driving conditions. Bob gross, the service dept. Manager at crestmont vw has left me a detailed voicemail informing me that he received a tech bulletin from vw, notifying all dealers that there were plastic shavings left behind during the manufacturing process that caused the oil tank to rupture, resulting in motor oil to gush profusely, which can lead the car to stall and possibly the engine to cease. I have written to jason haden, gm for vw north America, and to jonathan browning, president and ceo of vw north America. Neither of them deny the claims. It is clearly evident this vehicle need additional scrutiny to rectify the inherent flaws, shortcomings and inadequacies that are prevalent from the lack of oversight during the manufacturing process. The sole operator of this vehicle is my son who recently turned 17.
The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the steering column locks up on her vehicle and prevents it from being driven. She attempted to start the engine and an indicator illuminated, which stated that the steering column was locked. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the steering column was defective and needed a module. The repair would cost $1,300. The failure mileage was 63,000. Updated 05/27/09 updated 06/08/09 updated 6/16/09 the left rear caliper needed to be replaced, the check engine light illuminated, the transmission was making a loud noise, the tire pressure light illuminated, the left turn signal did not work, the left wheel bearing needed to be replaced, the hood release lever inside the vehicle was inoperative. Updated 06/17/09.
Loud noise in the lower half of engine prompted evaluation by mechanic. Problem was from failure of chain driven balance module. This failure was due to faulty design that vw has admitted to by virtue of no longer manufacturing this unit and replacing it with a totally re-engineered balance shaft module that is gear driven. Complete failure of this unit while operating the vehicle could result in a collision that potentially could be fatal. Vw refuses to be responsible and admit their error in design to the public, hoping to avoid a costly recall campaign. In the meantime vw owners are having to pay $2500 to $3000 for this repair. At the same time this is a recognized problem with the same engines in europe and vw has re-engineered the parts for north America for replacement. Vw needs to be held responsible for this design failure and the affected engines in north America need to be repaired at vw's expense before someone gets killed.

On sept 1,2005 on my way to the e. R. At a local hospital the oil light came on telling me to stop engine/check oil pressure. I turned engine off, and checked oil level, all ok. Tried to start engine to get off of new york state thruway, engine making terrible noise, turned off had car towed to dealer. Was told by dealer it would be at least $400. 00 to look at the car and diagnose it. After one week dealer called and said it would cost $9000. 00 to replace entire motor, on sept. 2 2005 called v. W. Of America they stated to me at that time that they were aware of the problem with the 1. 8 turbo building up oil sludge in the motor, and that they had extended the warranty on the engine. They said that they needed maintenance records to prove my case, they gave me a fax # which was the wrong #. After the long holiday weekend I phoned v. W. Of America again and they stated , to fax the documents directly to the dealer that they did not receive them, the consumer advocate that I was speaking with was new and did not know the fax #. The dealer stated that my records were not detailed enough and that I was missing six receipts, I moved one year ago and the valvoline station where I had the oil changed faithfully stated that if you do not use there services for 6 months that the computer automatically drops your records. I seem to be caught between a rock and a hard place, v. W. And the dealer keep shuffling me back and forth, in the mean time I have no vehicle and I am renting a car to get back and forth to work. After searching your web site I found 8 complaints including my own out of 50 that's almost 20% of the complaints for the same problem, and the other people are given the same run around. This has to stop somewhere and some one has to take responsibility for an obviously defective product. I have contacted an attorney and are prepared to litigate if necessary.
There was a loud noise coming from the engine.
