I experiencing a fuel distribution issue. It appears to be fuel injection system. My car sputters and misfires while driving. The engine readings are constantly changing. The engine idles high while it is stationary. When I accelerate to go up a hill or incline my car sputters uncontrollably. I have replaced the spark plugs and number of other parts but the problem persists.

Car stopped in the middle of the interstate, was almost hit by semi-truck. Fuel pump sent metal shards in the fuel system. Vw dealership quoted cost of $ 6000 to rebuild entire fuel injection system because of a defective fuel pump. What a way to start my family vacation stuck on the side of the interstate for 4 hours on a Sunday.

On 6/10/2004, I had my vw Passat repaired at mitchell Volkswagen, canton, CT, for rough idle and check engine light. Dealer found scan codes for cylinder #2 misfires and random/multiple misfires. Dealer replaced icm ignition control module and cleared fault. Then dealer attempted to set basic settings and a new problem was generated, throttle body would not adapt. I now have a continuous check engine light. Dealer did not explain why they tried to set the basic settings for the replacement of the icm. It is my understanding that if the basic settings are not performed correctly a malfunction to the throttle valve control can occur. The dealer told me the this problem may be self correcting. If it does correct itself, I need to replace the throttle body for approx. $500. 00. I have spent more than $539. 00 to have my icm replaced and now have a new problem. Now I am told "may require replacement of the throttle body to correct, will not cause vehicle to run rough, may cause surging at idle or slight hestitation on acceleration, part needs to be ordered. It may correct itself in 200 miles. The dealer said it's ok to drive the vehicle under these conditions (check engine light and hestitation and surging). I contacted vw customer service and they agree with the dealer. I think this is a manufucture's defect in design and you should not have to drive a vehicle with a check engine light with hestitation and possible surging, these are safety issues. The vw customer service would not give me someone else at vw to express my safety concerns.

I have a 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1. 8t whose engined has stalled on 3 different ocasions while operating the vehicle at high speeds on an interstate highway. Vw dealers have attempted to fix the problem on 3 different ocasions and I am not satisfied that the problem has been permanently resolved. The problem has been diagnosed as an ignition coil failure which causes one cylinder to shut-down during the engine operation. This happens randomly due to a faulty original equipment part. On two of these ocasions the car has lost power and shut down while operaring the vehicle on I-95. On the second ocasion I was being tailgated by a tractor trailer which almost overrun me after the sudden loss of speed. I had to veer out of the highway crossing several lanes to get out of the truck's way at the springfield interchange in northern virginia. Vw has not responded to my letters or requests to permanently fix this problem. I would like you to force them to recall all 1. 8t engine-equipped vehicles with this known problem (see new york times auto section Feb 2/2003) before there are incidents of this failure where there are fatalities.
