When you fill up the fuel tank it leaks it leaks a quarter of a tank of fuel roughly 4 to 5 gallons of fuel drip out there's a factory recall on this issue I took it to the Volkswagen dealer paid money to have them inspect it and they said yes it's leaking at the factory recall I've had an independent dealer confirm that! Volkswagen will not do anything due to what they claim a remedy was done by moving fuel lines 10 years ago, obviously it was not or I would not have 4 gallons of fuel spill in my driveway vehicle is basically in operable and they want $3000 to put a new fuel tank in when it's a factory recall which never expires I have talk to the Volkswagen rep and the only thing I have found in forums is do you have to go to volts wagon of America and fight them and this is ridiculous when they know they have an issue!! to drive this vehicle we never fill it over a half a tank of fuel so we do not leak fuel or explode while we're driving hopefully please help in anyway you can thank you.
2005 vw Passat wagon, 4 motion, 128,000 miles, w/ intense odor of gas in the cabin of the car; after driving 15 miles to work, I developed a headache and illness symptoms which lasted for 2 -3 days. Car was towed to local vw dealer. I contacted vw of America, who agreed to diagnostics. Large fuel tank fracture confirmed. After many discussions with customer service at vw of America, they refused to cover repairs, though they did confirm that this failure was the same failure which had led to a previous recall campaign of the fuel tank/system, but since my car had already been repaired (2015) w/ a superseded part and it was past the 12 month warranty period, I did not qualify, nor would they offer goodwill service. They did acknowledge, however, that it was a serious safety issue and the car should not be driven. I verbalized in many conversations the safety concern this posed not only for myself and my family but for others who had the potential to face the same situation. I asked what process vw had for documenting and reporting these consumer safety concerns of such a serious nature and was told that it is reported internally but there was no one I could speak with to discuss further any aspect of the case, nor would vw report this to NHTSA, as it had been reported under the previous campaign. I feel very strongly that this repeated failure should be reported and therefore am documenting here. The car has now been towed to my home where it sits in my driveway d/t the fumes being at a toxic level when the car is in the closed garage. The cabin of the car also remains with a high level of gas fumes. I have asked for written documentation from vw of America related to my case, but as of yet have not been provided with such.

I noticed a stain under my car while it was parked in the street. I figured out that vw had a recall on the fuel tank vent which required replacing the whole fuel tank. The tank runs about $922 and it takes up to 11 hours labor time. I started a chat with a vwoa rep to look into this issue. She said there are no current recalls or campains on my vehicle at this time. She also stated that my car's 26e5/r5 recall, it covers all 1999-2005 Passat and Passat wagon (5th gen) equipped with gas engines. Install underbody heat shield(s): inspect/replace fuel line, fuel tank: update software, if necessary, had been performed on 03/12/09 but has no service record to tell me what was done. It may not have actually been replaced. She also said vwoa will not fix nor help me fix it. I feel that if a recall for as huge safety issue that this is, should not fail in the same manor as the original part did. That tells me they just replaced it with the same problem part in hopes that the car wouldn't be in use by the time it fails again. I am including a few pics for evidence. The example tank pic has been outlined where the fuel leak is on my car. Thank you, chris.
My 2005 Passat has developed a fuel leak under the tank. My vehicle looks like new and only has 72000 miles on it. This leak/smell occurs after when the car is moving as well as when the car is sitting in the driveway. Seems very dangerous to me and I've read many complaints describing this exact scenario. Why is vw not forced to recall and inspect for this situation.
I completely filled the fuel tank of my car in the morning on 4/22/2019. I then drove home and parked the car in my driveway (so it was stationary at this time). That afternoon I smelled a strong odor of gasoline and saw a puddle on the ground underneath the car by the driver's side rear wheel. I thought that maybe I overfilled the fuel tank so I waited to see if the issue would go away after I drove a bit. On 4/23/2019 I still smelled gasoline and saw a puddle under the car after parking. I determined the fuel was only leaking while the car was in motion and it became apparent there was a larger issue. On 4/24/2019 I took the car to a mechanic to diagnosis where the leak was coming from. The mechanic could smell gas and found fuel residue, but nothing fresh. It was recommended that I fill the fuel tank and return to see if a leak could be found. So on 4/26/2019 I completely filled the fuel tank and returned to the mechanic. And they found that fuel is leaking from the seam of the fuel tank.
Tl the contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the vehicle would not hold fuel and the tank had to constantly be refilled. Also, the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to ellis motorcars inc (2235 e south blvd, montgomery, al 36116, (334) 280-1021) where it was diagnosed that the coolant system and the timing chain needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 78,000.
Strong odor of fuel in the car regardless of being parked or moving. Noticed puddle of gas on the ground under the fuel tank. Fuel was dripping down off the fuel tank and the heat shields. Followed drip to the rollover valve nipple which is attached to the gas tank.
Fuel tank leak. There is no damage no impact no visible evidence of any misuse of car. Fuel tank leaks when filled above 3/4 of a tank. This is unsafe and very dangerous this should be repaired by Volkswagen. In all my life as a mechanic I have never seen anything this unsafe. If my loved ones were to get hurt I will hold Volkswagen accountable. This needs to fixed now!. .

Gas tank/ fuel line fracture, leaking gas when I fill it up, strong gas smell/odor. Stops leaking at around 3/4 tank. Very dangerous for my 16 year old to drive. Vw dealership refused to correct, wants to charge me 2600, to fix I bought the car for 4200 3 months ago.
Started smelling gas and mileage started droppi g bad around the end of November. We see that there has been recalls on the gas tank and fuel lines for 01 Volkswagen Passats but unfortunately not for this VIN # which happens to be my sons car. Now its at the shop because its gas mileage went way down and and smells like gas and he was told that he was driving a bomb basically. It could be around $1000 to fix it. None of us have that kind of $ and hes still has $800 left oweing on it. Help.

I purchased a 2002 Passat w8 4-motion, having only 126,000 miles on the odometer, in October 2017 often after refueling the vehicle, I would notice the faint scent of gasoline. Upon investigating where the gasoline smell was originating, I found it had developed a very large fuel leak from which fuel could be seen dripping on the forward, left side of the fuel tank. After performing some brief research, I found that there was a recall on the Passat 4-motions, dated April 2008, in regards to a ventilation valve on the fuel tank. I promptly made a appointment with my local vw dealer for Dec 4th. On December 6, 2017, I contacted the dealership asking jay, the service manager at the vw dealership, if they found the vent valve to be leaking. I was told that the valve was in fact leaking at the bonded valve point. After hearing nothing the next two days, I received a phone call from vw stating that they found the under-body damage to be the cause of the leak. I requested to see the pictures of the damage so that I could examine them myself. On December 11, 2017, I received the pictures from the service manager showing the heat shields surrounding the tank to have some brush marks and to be disfigured a bit. Please keep in mind, this was a known issue in the early 2000's, and the vehicle is now 15 years old with 127,000 miles on it and the recall had been completed. This "damage" would not lead to a fuel tank leak as the fuel tank itself was not damaged. Very upset, I wrote to the regional case manager on Dec 11, 2017 with my thoughts on the damage and to get more details on the case. I have yet to receive a response.
The gas tank is leaking on the upper side behind the rear seats when is full. I think Volkswagen recalled some vehicles for the same problem in the past.
The contact owns a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed a fuel leak from the top of the tank. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the top of the fuel tank was old and a new tank was needed. The contact also noticed puddles of fuel were present approximately eight times since September. The leak worsened two weeks ago. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000.
Fuel tank is leaking near driver side rear wheel. Advised by dealer vw of north scottsdale that there is a fuel leak on top of the tank at the fuel tank ventilation valve and that the tank must be removed to ascertain source of the leak. Dealer advises tank was replaced in 2010 under a recall campaign. It appears that this current leak is associated with recall #28417 and NHTSA pe8008 and 08v156000.
Mechanic found a code for a defective adblue level sensor after I took the vehicle in to check the reason for the engine light illumination. They removed the adblue tank and installed an update kit. Yes, update kit, which tells me Volkswagen knows there is a widespread problem with the original level sensor equipment. Final cost of the repair: $1053. 51. This should be an extended warranty item, or recall.

The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a fuel leak. Upon further inspection, the contact noticed that the fuel leak originated near the rear of the exhaust. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was confirmed that there was a fuel leak in the vehicle coming from the top of the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign number: 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline); however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that the vehicle leaked fuel without warning. The vehicle was serviced per NHTSA campaign number: 08v156000 (fuel system), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The contact stated that the ventilation valve was fractured and caused fuel to leak. Also, the tank only leaked when it was more than half full. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
Report receipt date: Apr 07, 2008 NHTSA campaign number: 08v156000 component(s): fuel system, gasoline when fuel tank is more than 3/4 fuel a fuel smell appears inside the vehicle. A prior recall was done for a heat shield, fuel line and 4motion fuel tank vent valve for inspection and replace as needed. These seem to fail again. Most dealers mark recall as performed without a leak and when the leak actually occurs they try to deny the issue as performed already. This needs to be addressed so that owners of lower mileage vehicles ( under 150000) can get the repair fixed under a recall that has been on the vehicle prior.

Takata recall engine code for malfunctioning adblue heater, requires new adblue tank $1200 not covered under warranty. Searching online, a lot of owners having same issue. Considering they aren't even using the system, this could be the cause of premature failure of the device. I feel this should be replaced as part of the emissions recall.

Purchased a used 2004 vw Passat glx 4motion with 91k miles and no accident or damage history per carfax. . First fill of the gas tank revealed a severe leak of greater than 180 drops per minute. The leak occured at all times with the car running or turned off and the key removed. The leak stopped after the gas gauge moved below f. Removed rear seat and noticed fuel wetting on the exterior of the tank adjacent to the fuel level sensor. Using a mirror fuel was visible coming from the vent boss adjacent to the fuel level sensor. This exact issue is covered under vwoa recall 26e5/r5 NHTSA campaign # 08v156000. I contacted vw customer service and they informed me my vehicle VIN wvwth63b64p041929 is not eligible however they did not say why. The carfax report states that a heat shield was replaced 8/11/2008. Recall 26e5/r5 involves a heat shield as well as the fuel tank. It's possible the tank was ok at the time. If the vehicle has already had the recall and the fuel tank developed the problem after is there any recourse under this recall?.
My daughter drove this vehicle into my garage and reported to me that she smelled a strong odor of gas. I looked and noticed gas dripping onto the floor. I got down and inspected the area where it was coming from and noted that it was flowing from the top (out of sight) of the tank. Backed the car out onto the drive and placed a towel under the area. Called the dealership and scheduled an appointment. Betten imports (Volkswagen dealership) of grand rapids mi, inspected it and I was informed it had a crack in the plastic tank the length of a dime. The dealership recommended the tank be replaced at a estimated cost of $2,700. Due to the extensive cost I did not elect to have this done at this time. Only seems to be an issue when tank is filled to max capacity.
Gas gauge was not reading full when taken to gas station, although gas dispenser clicked off as full. Happened many times at different gas stations. Took my car in to vw dealership. They stated that gas vent was not working not allowing my car to fill completely. They stated they had to replace gas tank, ~ $2000. Don't have the money to repair. They stated it was not a safety situation???.

Nox sensor malfunctioned out of range code. Was quoted 655 dollars to replace. Nox sensors are not required by federally mandated 80k emissions warranty so vw won't include voluntarily. One week after having this fixed, the check engine light turns on again with code p203b, redactant level range/performance. Speaking a few times with technicians at the dealership, this likely means the replacement of the ad blue heater unit and tank which is over 1000 dollars. Again, not covered under warranty.
