Volkswagen Passat owners have reported 3 problems related to other fuel system tank mounting (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. My 2001 Volkswagen Passat has had an r5 recall for fuel lines, fuel tank, and a heat shield. The hard (low pressure fuel return?) line, the middle one of the mounting bracket atop the firewall, has failed catastrophically. It now sprays gasoline directly down onto the catalytic converter heat shield. This is the same failure in the same exact point that many other owners have had. This part is dangerous and could have killed me and destroyed my car. Volkswagen refused to fix it. I've been in contact with vw customer care and my local dealer, both told me that once the recall is closed on my vehicle that there is nothing they'll do. They wanted me to tow my car to the dealership and pay $135 for a diagnostic until I showed them a video of the fuel line under pressure spraying everywhere.

2004 Volkswagen Passat 4motion, the fuel tank rollover/vent valve on the top of the tank has cracked and is leaking gasoline onto the exhaust system. The tank was filled up on 2/22/2015 and started leaking large amounts of fuel from the top of the tank over the exhaust. This continued until the tank reached 3/4 full. If the fuel tank is filled above 3/4 it will leak fuel until it gets to 3/4. If the vehicle is parked with the front downhill, it continues to leak beyond the 3/4 point. This failure was part of a previous vw 2008 NHTSA mandated recall 08v156000, but only required dealer inspection of the rollover/vent valve and not replacement of the fuel tank with a functional part, if it was not leaking when inspected then do nothing. The rollover/vent is integral to the vw Passat awd tank, and the complete fuel tank has to be replaced. Vw claim as the car was inspected in 2008, they are not responsible for the subsequent failure of the rollover/vent valve.

Noticed a leaking gas tank on my 2003 Volkswagen Passat. This is the first time that this has occurred. However, there has been several recalls on this car that pertain to issues with the fuel line, gas tank cap, heat shield and gas tank. After noticing this leak, I immediately took the car into the Volkswagen dealership for service because the amount of gas leaking from the rear end of the car was fairly substantial and enough to easily cause a serious fire. Once at the dealer, they said that the issue was the gas cap/nozzle that is connected to the gas tank. This nozzle is very small and seems to be very brittle, easy to break off. My concern is that there are a number of these cars on the road that spontaneously seem to start leaking gasoline from their fuel tanks. As I was never involved in an accident, never went down a dirt road or even hit a speed bump all of which might (in a remote circumstance) cause the nozzle to break.
