36 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/12/2015

I purchased a 2004 vw Passat 1. 8 liter turbo 4motion station wagon on August 12, 2015. Within one hour of purchasing I took it to fill it up with fuel. The fuel tank began leaking immediately. I took it back to the dealer I bought it from and they attempted to fix it by replacing an o-ring about three weeks later, meanwhile advising me to not fill the tank past the 3/4 full mark until they fixed it. This did not fix the problem, it still leaked when it was filled above the 3/4 tank level. I took it to another mechanic who reinstalled the same o-ring, again unsuccessfully, at my expense. I subsequently learned of a recall regarding the failure of the fuel tank and the venting system. I called Volkswagen and was informed that they had "fixed" the recall issue in 2008 and that any further action would be at my expense and could involve replacing the fuel tank, a very expensive proposition. I find this response inadequate and, in light of reading many other posts describing similar or identical problems with the supposedly repaired fuel leak, believe that Volkswagen needs to be held responsible by NHTSA for correcting a recurring, dangerous safety issue.

38 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/18/2015

When fuel tank has approximately 8 gallons or more, fuel pours out from under the rear driver's side about two feet from the outer kick panel. Noticed there was a recall and vwoa said that my VIN does not qualify for the recall despite my explaining that the problem is identical to other complaints on vehicles that were recalled. This was at 118k miles and it happened to the previous owner arround 80k.

39 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

The check engine light came on and I had codes read. The code was p205c and this indicates the emissions adblue heater and sensor had a problem. The unit (heater and sensor) in the adblue tank is a non serviceable unit and must be replaced. Over $750. 00 to replace. All the efficiency of tdi just went up in smoke. Happened at 4,000 miles past warranty and dealer had no help even though a lot of tdi's are having identical problems. Seems to be a defect in design, many many tdi's are having the same problem.

40 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

Nhtsa campaign id number: 08v156000 "fuel tank ventilation valve (4motion/all wheel drive only) that can leak due to fracture. " NHTSA action number: pe08008 the car is oozing gasoline from top left (driver's) side of gas tank. There is a strong smell of gasoline inside and outside (outside due to a gas puddle). Vw dealer (vw downtown los angeles) refuses to grant the repair, asking for $140 inspection fee. Vwoa representative sites the recall performed in 2009. The recall ( pe08008 ) issued has 2 parts: 1) underbody heat shield installation. 2) "dealers will also inspect and adjust the fuel line routing on 1. 8t vehicles and the fuel tank ventilation valve on 4motion/all wheel drive vehicles, and replace components if necessary free of charge. " I suspect the second part was not fulfilled, given the exact nature of mechanic failure described.

43 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

Redundant tank heater failure. Very common issue (to the point that there are several "how to" fix it yourself procedures and a "hack" to trick the mil light into thinking it is working. Even though it failed within the carb warranty period, vw refused to fix under carb warranty because a vw dealership did not diagnose it within the warranty period (it was 3rd party mechanic) and car is now well out of carb warranty. It is a very costly repair and an extremely common failure, to the point were there is a vw TSB on the part failing in the Passats and touregs. I have approached vw twice on the issue, but to no love from them. Car is still drivable since this part is not used in the climate that I drive it in, so I have not fixed it for a year and a half now.

44 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/19/2014

Engine light came on at 36900 miles, 900 miles passed the manufacture warranty. The error code read: p205c (reductant tank temperature sensor). It was a faulty sensor in the adblue tank from a tdi car. Already lots of owners had the exact same problem according to the dealership.

45 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Fuel began leaking from the top of the fuel tank after fill up. My daughter was heading back to college, and as she pulled away I noticed a large puddle of gasoline in the street. Nhtsa had previously recalled the vehicle in 2008 (26e5/r5) action number (pe08008). Vw dealer inspected and installed heat shield. No fuel leak at this time. In September 2012 fuel tank began leaking, vw dealer replaced the fuel tank, washer, gasket and clamp under the recall. In September 2014 I brought car back to vw dealer, and they said they are only responsible to fix the car once. Fed up with vw, I brought car to my local mechanic, and upon inspection he found the nipples on the fuel tank rollover valve were again cracked. I had him replace the tank. Obviously vw didn't properly fix the problem, and or replaced the tank with the same defective design and the tank cracked again. This is a very serious safety issue, and I feel that vw should pay for this repair. If it was done right and corrected, the tank would not be leaking again after less than 2 years, and 20,000 miles. This could have caused a fire with my daughter in the car, and that is very upsetting to me.

46 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/13/2014

First time I filled tank fuel full with fuel and fuel tank started to leak. I send the car to Volkswagen dealer nd they found a crack on welded part of the tank, where two parts of the fuel tank are weld together. If fuel tank is less than 3/4 it does not leak but if it is full leak. I call Volkswagen and they told me than the car is two old and with too much of the miles to be covert from any recall so they will not pay for fuel tank replacment and they do not support the safety of any car above 100. 000 miles are older than 10 years. I payed $2154 for the replacement of the fuel tank . Dealer gave to me the cracked tank, I asked for it, and I have it I my garage.

47 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/12/2014

As with similar reports the car was driven then sat for 24hrs, when it was started again a strong gas smell was noticed and a puddle of gas was found under the passenger rear panel. Immediately took to repair station where they could not find a leak. They filled the tank with gas and left it to sit overnight and under pressure. No leak. 3 weeks have passed with typical driving, not excessive use and no leaks until today September 5th 2014. Started the car up and backed up to find a gas puddle again.

50 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/18/2014

While sitting still in a parking lot the vehicle suddenly knocked violently and stopped running. According to the dealer the vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic failure of the high pressure fuel system causing metal fragments to be spread through the fuel system. The vehicle had approximately 1/2 tank of fuel and had ran perfect before the incident. At no time have we ever accidentally filled it with gasoline instead of diesel and at no time had the engine ran rough as if it was having trouble combusting the fuel.

I filled my gas tank up on a Friday and drove it home and parked it in the driveway and the next day noticed a fairly large puddle of gasoline under my car. I took it to my local car shop and they told me that it was the fuel line that was leaking and that he called a Volkswagen dealership and they had told him that there was a recall on that exact part of the car. I was told to call Volkswagen and see if they would be able to fix the issue and they told me that the recall was already fixed by the previous owner of my car. If it was already fixed then the same problem shouldn't be happening again.

The manufacturer was notified of this failure. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000. Rg.

55 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/24/2014

I have a 2004 vw Passat w8 4-motion and I filled the tank the other day and parked the car in the garage overnight and when I opened the interior garage door in the morning the fumes were so strong I evacuated my wife and 4 month old baby form the house. This has happened 2 times, both were when I filled the fuel tank. I called the dealer and they said there was a recall that added a heat shield and inspected the 4 motion vw Passat purge/rollover valve. They stated that the heat shield was replaced but did not show the valve being replaced. I called vw and they stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and is no longer covered. I am very concerned for my family's safety especially since I live in a 3 story town-home and the garage is at the bottom of our main floor. I would like the car inspected ASAP.

56 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2012 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 02/14/2014

Started car after being parked for about 45 minutes. Fuel (diesel) started pouring out the back by the fuel tank neck. About 2-3 gallons of fuel came out ( less than a minute) before realized this was happening and turned car off. Had car towed to dealership. They have determined the fuel line came off but can not figure out why or how. Vw told them this has never happened. Checked on line and can see this is an issue that is happening but not being reported.

58 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2013 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/26/2013

Our 2013 Volkswagen Passat leaked gasoline on to our garage floor while sitting in the garage. The garage floor was covered and you could visibly see the fuel dripping from the gas tank. The fumes filled our garage and home and resulted in extensive clean up and ventilation. The Volkswagen dealership arrived with a flat bed and towed the car back to the dealership. The man who towed the car even commented about the odor and you could visibly see the gasoline running from the car as it was loaded on to the flatbed. The Volkswagen dealership says there is nothing wrong and no changes to the vehicle are necessary!.

59 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/23/2013

Concerning Volkswagen recall 08v156000. Summary: Volkswagen is recalling 412,000 my 1999-2005 Passat (5th generation) vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions and produced after June 14, 1999. These vehicles may have an underbody heat shield that can become damaged. In addition, affected vehicles with automatic transmissions may have a fuel tank ventilation valve (4motion/all wheel drive only) that can leak due to fracture. Consequence: a heat shield that may contact the exhaust system can result in a vehicle fire. In addition, a fuel leak from a fuel line or fuel tank ventilation valve, in the presence of an ignition source, can lead to a vehicle fire. Remedy: dealers will install additional underbody heat shields on vehicles with automatic transmissions to cover the possibly damaged areas. Dealers will also inspect the fuel tank ventilation valve on 4motion/all wheel drive vehicles, and replace components if necessary free of charge. The recall began on June 13, 2008. Fast fwd to 2013. Our gas tank is now leaking out and there's every indication it's a ventilation valve. The recall work was complete on this car in 2008, although the dealer service order did not specify the fuel tank ventilation valves were inspected. The work ordered specified installing the heatshields only. Vw dealer will not cover costs of checking the ventilation valve given they said the recall work was already performed. Who holds dealer accountable for properly completing recall inspection /maintenance?.

60 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 01/23/2013

We have begun to notice the smell of fuel in the cabin of our car. The smell occurs when the car is full of gas; otherwise, with a half tank of gas, there are no odors. The car is a 2004 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1. 8t 4motion with the 5 speed automatic. Vw has made no promises to remedy this issue.

62 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/13/2012

Purchased car used. First time I filled the gas tank strong smell of raw gas was present during the next several miles of travel. When I came out of the store from paying for the second fill up there was a big puddle of raw fuel all over the ground directly under the car. I did some research & discovered a manufacture recall for this very issue. Further investigation indicated the recall had already been repaired by the dealer. After explaining my dilemma to the appropriate corporate department I was told there was nothing more they could/would do to remedy this very hazardous defect. My feeling is the problem was never properly addressed, in spite of the recall, & is therefore still a hazard. I have discovered by keeping the level of the gas tank below 1/2 it doesn't leak. Out of necessity for transportation this is how I've been operating the vehicle. This is unacceptable. Due to the major expense of properly repairing this, and the potentially catastrophic hazard it presents, I feel the manufacture should be held accountable for the complete, and proper repair of this admitted default in the car. What, if anything, can your organization do to assist me in this matter?.

63 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/20/2012

Fuel tank ventilation valve is cracked and leaking on 2003 vw Passat 4motion/awd (under NHTSA campaign # 08v156000). Contacted multiple dealers and vw directly and dealership/vw will not replace fuel tank under recall. Both stated this recall was completed in 2009 however work completed was only one part of the recall that included adding additional heat shields. Vw customer care stated vehicle was out of warranty and they could not assist. Customer objected stating this is a safety concern not a warranty issue. ## VIN passed ## vw Passat 2003 ##.

64 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated the fuel tank was leaking on top near the vent. After parking the vehicle she noticed liquid on the ground and a fuel smell near the side of the vehicle. There was a recall NHTSA campaign id number: 08v156000: fuel system, gasoline: delivery related to the failure. The vehicle was repaired under the recall in 2008 where the dealer installed additional underbody heat shields to cover the damaged areas and flash the engine with a precautionary software update. Approximately two months ago there was fuel odor again. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who stated they repaired the recall previously. The manufacturer stated they will not repair the failure again and offered no additional assistance. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 229,000.

65 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Volkswagen Passat. The contact stated that while he was away, he left the vehicle parked in an airport parking garage. The vehicle was later impounded by the police due to fuel leakage in while it was parked. The police reported that the vehicle was not safe to be parked in the garage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that a heat shield that may contact the exhaust system could result in a vehicle fire. In addition, a fuel leak from a fuel line or the fuel tank ventilation valve in the presence of an ignition source could lead to a vehicle fire. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicl was not included in the recalls associated with NHTSA campaign id numbers 08v156000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery) and 04v586000 (fuel system, diesel). The failure and current mileages were 83,529.

67 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/11/2012

I bought a Volkswagen Passat 2002 from a local dealer. The vehicle came with no warranty. The day I got the vehicle I filled the car with full tank of gasoline. I parked the car outside my appartment and next day when I checked there was gas leaking from the car. This happened like for 4 days and when the fuel in the car reduced to half of the fuel tank capacity it stopped. I thought it soudld be some sort of leak which stopped by itself. But next time when I did a full tank re fill again the gasoline started leaking. Even this time it stopped after the fuel in the car reduced to half the tank level. I called up Volkswagen cutomer care to get this fuel tank replaced as per NHTSA action number : pe08008. They told the fuel tank was replaced in June 2011. Its just a year and again it is happening the same. They didn give me the information were it was replaced and told it has crossed 1 year of warranty period and they cant help. But here it just 11 days from June 2011 and the fuel tank was spoil yet again. I request you to take this appeal of mine and get this fuel tank replaced for me. This is a matter of saftey. If it was something else I wouldnt have worried but here this is fuel leaking from fuel tank. Small burst of fire or spark inside or outside the car can be very dangerous. Even the leaking fuel mite get ignited while the car is travelling for a longer period in summer due to heat.

68 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/16/2012

Strong odor of fuel in car (2003 vw Passat 4motion) after the tank is filled up. Took car to repairman who diagnosed a crack in the fuel tank. Took car to vw dealership for repair because we believe the repair should be covered under a recall on cracked fuel tanks (near the valves), but vw has stated that this car does not qualify for the recall.

69 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/05/2008

Analog gas gauge and digital feeds from gas tank inaccurate most of time - sometimes half a tank off. Took multiple times and 5 weeks for dealership to repair (gave up once - then took to another dealership). Gauge also seems to have sticking points. Sometimes moves while being watched.
