6 Water Pump problem of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 11/22/2016

Currently my 2. 0t 4 cylinder engine is experiencing failures noted by the diagnostic system with fault code p2181 cooling system performance along with a cylinder 1 and cylinder 4 misfire. The suggested remedy for the p2181 error is to replace the thermostat and/or the water pump. In researching community forums, this pairing of issues appears widespread. There is a possible manufacturing design flaw that correlates the failure of engine coils and/or plugs with failure of the water pump as the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Furthermore, the functions are linked in this way allowing one to cause the other to fail. This is evident with a check engine light on at all times and while driving the misfire will occur between 2000-3000 rpm and cause the vehicle to jerk and stutter. The misfire causes loss of power and the check engine light flashes.

8 Water Pump problem of the 2004 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/08/2014

The vehicle heated up due to a fault in vw's Passat cooling system and smoke started to come out from engine. I was driving at around 25 miles / km only. I towed the car to mechanic and had to do a costly repair for water pump, timing belt, etc. I see there is an open recall for this kind of issue in water pump in Passats, so I truly believe the water pump was faulty from manufacturer side. I would like to be repaid for the money I have already spent on this.

9 Water Pump problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

Check engine light came on, we took it to dealership and had repairs done including oil change, after a day of driving the check engine light came on again, returned to dealer, more repairs were done, paid around $3,000 in repairs to timing belt, tensioner, guide pulleys, and water pump. After that repair, the light again came on and returned to dealer, was told that metal was found in oil filter housing and engine will need replaced to address the concern. Could not afford at that time and was not informed it could not be driven, the check engine light was off and were told that upon acceleration from stop the metals would scrape. Car was still operable, c/e light was off and needed for transportation to work and after 3 trips to and from repair shop (3 rivers Volkswagen) and all of the money already spent on repairs to "fix" the same issue leading up to this, I was not able to do that at the time, as well as being skeptical of paying $9k more! was driving on the highway when the oil pump bolt failed completely and caused engine to cease. Later learned that this was a common issue on the 2006 vw Passat 2. 0t engines and that it can cause catastrophic engine failure, that vw was aware of the design flaw and has manufactured a replacement bolt but has never issued a recall and does not inform owners of these cars that there is potential for this engine failure. . 10 Water Pump problem of the 2006 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/22/2011

Lost most of power while driving on highway. Drove vehicle (2006 Passat 3. 6l) to vw dealer where they diagnosed a "timing chain issue". Vw dealer claimed they would fix engine for $5000, used replacement for $8000, or new engine for $10,500. . . After hearing that good news, towed vehicle to local vw pro who also diagnosed "timing chain issue", and was given the go-ahead to fix. Problem isolated to intermediate shaft bolt, which had backed out, allowing timing sprockets to wander. Bolt itself is nearly sheared in half - good thing we stopped when we did. Bolt was also rubbing on timing chain cover, and would have likely broke or ground thru timing chain cover. This problem was corrected by my local vw guy for $3300, which included all oem parts, new water pump, plus plugs. Imho, this is a serious safety issue for owners which may experience this problem. Minimal research on the web indicates I'm not the only one with this issue. The loss of power at highway speeds was alarming enough without thinking of what may have happened had the bolt broke, or worn thru the timing cover. From a mechanical perspective, I'm extremely dismayed at how this could happen in the first place. I have about 30 years of mechanical experience with car engines - mostly with 60's and 70's era vehicles. My experience would hold suspicion that a bolt backing out of the timing sprocket would be the fault of the mechanic who installed it, either by applying the incorrect torque, oil under the bolt, or not applying loc-tite to threads.

11 Water Pump problem of the 2009 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/06/2011

For the last 4 years, I've been dealing with major mechanical and non-mechanical issues with my Volkswagen (vw) Passat 2009, which I bought brand new in 2008. Vw's mechanics found that my car had defective parts in it, which were there from the time I bought it. I have had so many problems with the car that I don't trust it, even though vw's mechanics said they've either fixed or replaced the bad parts, but each time I've taken it in for repairs in the past, I've had the same parts repaired or replaced over and over. A summary of these issues: - rear side window sunscreen hook - replaced due to falling out – year 2009 - rear windshield sunscreen - replaced because it had broken – year 2011 - engine fault - car died and running roughly ever since – year 2011 - engine light coming on 4 times – years 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 - driver’s door lock - had stopped locking – year 2012 - engine cover - screws fell out of the rear of engine cover – year 2012 - 2 water pumps - replaced due to coolant draining completely out of the reservoir – years 2012 & 2013 - knob to adjust side mirrors came off and now unable to adjust side mirrors – year 2013 I have paid nearly $40,000 to date on this defective vehicle and vw doesn't seem to care how many times I've been put in harms way and inconvenienced. I also have relatives and associates who've had problems with their similar model vws too, so I know I can't be the only one who has had these mechanical issues with a vw in the us. I feel there should be an investigation into vw corp. Of some sort by government officials to uncover the defective construction of my car and others, so all of us who've suffered through this will be redeemed in some way and future consumers will be safer by vw improving their vehicles' construction.

12 Water Pump problem of the 2002 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/24/2006

On August 24, 2006 my 2002 vw Passat with 64777 miles was taken in to replace the spark plugs. No problem so far, I picked up the car a got as far as two blocks when the temp gauge pegged out. I immediately stopped the car and checked for leakage, no leakage was noticeable I drove the car back to the dealership and was informed that the water pump failed. I had fork out nearly $1000 dollars to get the car back on the road. The service manager showed my the failed pump and was astonished that the impeller was made out of plastic. To add insult when I contacted vw and request some type of relief for the expense. I requested a written response which I never received only a terse phone call. Vw's response was sorry for your loss.

13 Water Pump problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/15/2005

I have a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. In the two years I have owned this car I have had it towed to the dealership 5-6 times due to transmission problems. When putting the car in park it kept moving forward. I had to put on the emergency brake to stop the car. Luckily, I was in a parking lot, and was going very slow. Again, I had a problem with my car not too long after. My car display read stop engine, and the car was overheating. Vehicle was towed to the dealership and water pump had to be replaced. Another problem involved the brake lights staying on, draining the battery, twice had to have a vehicle towed to the dealership. Yesterday, oil light came on, and the display again read stop engine. I had the car towed again. Dealership said that unless I have a complete record of my oil change receipts they will not cover it. I have read literally hundreds of complaints with the same problem. What is going on!!! I am fighting with the dealership, and Volkswagen corporation to have this problem resolved under warranty. This should be a recall item! help!!!.
