Failure Date: 09/19/2003

While driving at 40 mph, the vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Without warning then the vehicle stalled. The driver tried to restart the vehicle but was unable to do so. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the mass air flow sensor and cleaned the fuel pump relay to resolve the stalling problem. The radio was inoperative due to a short in the wiring.

37 Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/21/2003

Vehicle died while driving on 45 mph road. Starter and engine turn, but would not run. Advised dealer that this happened 1 year ago and engine fuse and horn fuse had to be replaced. No codes were in the computer. Dealer replaced fuse s232 and car started. During road test, car died again. Fuse s232 blew again and dealer found ecm and harness melted and was smoking. Dealer replaced ecm, harness and fuse and car ran. When customer received the car, the cruise control and dash lights were inoperative. Dealer reprogrammed cruise and fixed wiring of dash lights under warranty after much argument. Dealer did not know cause of mishap. This is the 2nd time the car has died while travelling on busy roads. I was nearly rear-ended twice as I pulled the car off the highway.

41 Wiring problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/19/2002

I recently leased a vw Passatt station wagon and things have gone wrong with it even before the car had 300 miles on it. The car has less than 5000 miles on it and it has spent some 10 days at the repair shop. Defects have included a transmission that would disengage, heated seats that would not turn off, a/c and side mirrors that would not work, a module had to be replaced, the car had to be aligned, the front spoiler fell off, a speaker had to be replaced, part of the trim on the back was falling off, the memory settings on the driver's seat were not working, and the sun roof was rattling. The sales department has responded to all my calls by saying that I need to talk to the service department or to vw corporate directly. I have done both, when I called vw corporate they responded that as long as the car was driveable they would cover it under warranty and would not replace the car. They offered me a lube job as a settlement!.

42 Wiring problem of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/01/2002

Loss of power to climate control, cruise control, headlights (low beam), some interior lights, radio display, steering wheel controls, home link transmitter. Apparent short in driver side sun visor. Visor was replaced under warranty and everything returned to normal.

43 Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 07/09/2002

Car died while driving on 55 mph road. Starter worked and engine would turn, but would not run. Dealer found no codes in computer. Engine and horn fuses blown and dealer replaced horn relay. I asked the dealer why there were no codes in the computer and they didn't know the answer. They would not replace the computer. Car was in the shop for 7 days. Incident happened over 100 miles from home and dealer finally authorized loaner after 2 days. Dealer was very rude during the whole incident and construction made it difficult to communicate. Phone lines were disconnected part of the time.

44 Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 06/22/2002

While driving the vehicle one night both front headlights burned out without warning. Both of the head light wiring harness' failed and caused multiple head light failures. The consumer had to pay for 3 of the 4 failures out of pocket.

45 Wiring problem of the 2001 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 09/20/2001

This vehicle has broken down 4 times within 11 months with the same problem. The car lost all power and the epc light came on. Each time it needed to be towed to the dealer. The dealer keeps claiming they fixed it, but after 4 times I no longer feel safe in this car. I am pursuing the lemon law currently. I commute a very windy highway for work and should the car break down with the problem again I could be killed. 4 times is too many for the dealer to say it's fixed. I have no confidence that this car is really fixed. They have fixed the electronic control unit 2x, the pedal 3x, and then the entire wiring harnes once. Since they keep replacing the same parts over and over I have no way of really knowing that the problem will not occur again.

46 Wiring problem of the 1999 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 04/10/1999

The car is on it's second transmission with only 47000 miles, and having problems with it. Doesn't want to shift into higher gear and clunks sometimes. Headlights did not work for first 4 months we owned the car. Dealer could not find the problem. Sunroof opens and closes by itself. Dealerships have not found the problem. Map light has started to do the same. Indicator lights go on and off. Dealer says he has never heard of a problem with the wiring on these cars and that it is safe to drive.

47 Wiring problem of the 1998 Volkswagen Passat

Failure Date: 08/05/1998

My abs light intermittently comes on followed by the brake light flashing> upon researching this on several various forums on the net. This appears to be a commonly defective part on several model years from 98-01. The oldest posting I found was done in 2000 and the vehicle was a 99. From researching this it appears even vw dealers are unable to get correct problem codes on this issue. I saw postings from many owners stating they were told everything from abs modules needing replaced to instrument clusters to wiring issues. It appears no one is absolutely sure what the issue is as some owners after the dealer recommend replacements did not fix the issue. In the short time I looked into this I feel that vw should be well aware of this issue and have taken steps to resolve it. I saw literally years worth of postings a on this issue on bentley publishers website. I can only imagine how many thousands of people have had to pay for things that did not do any research on it.
