On 9-23-2022, my daughter took her car to a midas for an oil change. The odometer read 87,034. They installed a new oil filter and 6 quarts of fully synthetic 5w-30 oil, and said the oil had been low when she brought it in. On 10-2-22, my daughter called me and said her Volvo had a message light in the dash: “no oil pressure. ” I advised her to go directly home (it was late in the evening and no mechanic was open then. ) she and her roommate consulted the manual to see how precisely to check the oil on this exact car, and no oil registered on the dipstick. I advised her to look under the car in the garage to see if there was any oil leaking; none was found. I told her she cannot drive it and risk driving with absolutely no oil. The car was not driven the next day, 10-23-22, and then our insurance company's roadside assistance picked up the car on the morning of 10-24-22. At my request they towed the car to the midas where she had the oil change. The odometer was around 88,830. The car consumed 6 quarts of oil in one month and 1,796 miles of driving. After inspecting the Volvo, the service person at midas called me to inform me that there is no oil leak, and that the 2013 Volvo S60 has known oil consumption issues. He said the oil is being burned through the motor. He said the oil is seeping past the piston rings and burning internally. He said the oil piston rings have scored the engine wall. This is all definitely out of my expertise, but I took notes on all of it. He said she must check the oil every 500 miles and top it off constantly. He said failing this the entire engine would be ruined if running with no oil. I believe the normal mileage between synthetic oil changes is 7,500-10,000 miles. I met with the Volvo dealer (see attached letter I presented) and they informed me they would need to do tests, at my expense (hundreds of dollars) and I may need to replace the engine, almost fully at my expense. While reversing, the car came to a sudden abrupt halt and the check engine lamp and other warning lamps illuminated. The ignition was still active (the car was in hybrid mode, operating on battery for motive power only), I cycled the transmission to "d" and no forward movement occurred, also tried "r" and back to "d" with the same result - no movement. I cycled the ignition off and on, the engine started and the car could be moved. Cel still on. I scanned the car and found permanent dtc's u0111 (lost communication with battery energy control module) and u0120 (u0120 lost communication with starter generator control module). After several key on key off events, the cel extinguished and battery motive power was again available. The dtc's are still in memory. This is a serious concern, the car suffered complete loss of motive power, had this occurred while operating the car on the road would have created a very dangerous condition and greatly increased risk of injury or death. Today, I checked online and found multiple reports of this exact same problem with other owners of Volvo t8 extended range-equipped vehicles. My car is almost new, about 160 miles and 3 weeks old. 2013 Volvo S60. Consumer writes in regard to illuminated no oil pressure light.
The contact owns a 2013 Volvo S60. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the oil pressure warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the engine was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where they were unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.
The contact owns a 2015 Volvo S60. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under an unknown recall for the catalytic converter and the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact was told that the catalytic converter had failed due to an oil leak. The contact was informed that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle had exceeded the mileage. There was no additional assistance provided. The approximate failure mileage was 165,000.
At 86k miles can smell oil burning and add 1 quart light comes on. It's said Volvo is aware of a defect with the piston rings causing oil to consume and burn away. They aren't willing to address the issue outside warranty expiration. They did recently indicate how Volvo changed the requirement for using 5w30 oil to claim now Volvo changed there minds. How now only 0w20 full synthetic oil must be used. The label under the hood says use 5w30 only. It appears that Volvo is changing oil types because they know there's an issue with the piston rings and is trying to cover up a defect by doing so.

Vehicle odometer less than 7k miles. Vehicle was serviced with full synthetic oil in November 2022. March 2022, vehicle had consumed all the synthetic lubricant and failed while driving. Report was made to both dealership and Volvo USA. Only answer received as to why or how the lubricant evaporated was that ' it was a well known issue' and that since it's out of warrantee they could not assist any further. This incident mechanical failure incident scared me as a father as my son found out while he was driving on the interstate and it puts his life in danger.

My wife and I were driving to bwi airport for a 10:30am flight from virginia beach in the express lane on I-95n going 75mph when all of a sudden at 8:30am the engine seized and I got a message telling me I would experience "reduced engine performance" as my car puttered to a stop with white smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Prior to this message I had no warnings or messages on my dashboard. I got out of my car to check my oil and it was completely evaporated, so I called aaa. While we are 1 hour into waiting (it is now 9:30am) on the narrow shoulder of two express lanes for a tow truck to take our car to a shop at 11:40am and for a lyft driver to figure out how to get to us, two vdot employees told us we had to move our car by 11am otherwise the state police will tow us. I managed to call a local tow company who finally arrived by 10:55am, so we had been stranded in an express lane watching cars fly by at 85mph for almost 2 and a half hours before we were able to move. After the first shop took a look and told me the engine was damaged and that they couldn't replace it, I had it towed to a Volvo dealership. 5 days and a $375 diagnostic later, they find that the turbocharger has an internal oil leak and that this and the catalytic converter would have to be replaced for $6k. Aside from now being carless 4 hours from the dealership and missing my wife's birthday celebration without refund, I now have a $6,375 bill that I had no way of preventing due to a manufacturing design flaw in 2012 Volvo S60 t5. I should have been warned of a low oil situation so I could have at least pulled over and properly tended to it. I should not have to be liable for a Volvo design flaw that may involve faulty piston rings that has apparently affected countless others. This incident put both my wife and I in danger on an express lane on a very busy highway. Volvo needs to be accountable for this design flaw.

It looks as if my car should have been included in the 62vin recall for engine sensor not stating low oil. Car started to knock and shutoff with no warning for low oil pressure. Diagnostic show oil was issue but even when completely drained car still does not display low oil which caused motor to blow. Contacted Volvo and they would not add vehicle to recalls even though car year manufactured period and engine VIN matched recall.

The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. No additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
This in regards to a vehicle I purchased on March 30, 2021. It is a 2012 Volvo S60 t5 VIN #[xxx]. When I purchased the car it had 99,489 miles on the odometer and when the vehicle became an issue it was at 104,409 miles on the odometer. I purchased it on craigslist from a physician in maine. On December 1, 2021 my husband was driving the vehicle on the highway and it stalled without warning after almost crashing. He was able to pull over, start the car back up and drive it home. There were no warning alerts or check engine light that came on the dashboard. After browsing the internet, we realized that the car had a recall due to an oil consumption level issue in 2014 (recall #r29436; national highway traffic safety administration campaign #13v592000). I contacted Volvo of north America who opened up a case (case #[xxx]) and then had the car towed to portland Volvo in scarborough, maine for an appointment on December 14, 2021. On December 15, 2021 portland Volvo informed us that the vehicle’s engine was beyond repair. Later that evening I received an email from [xxx] at Volvo of na stating that they would cover $750 of the repairs. I emailed her back asking her to wait for a quote from portland Volvo on how much it was going to be to repair the vehicle. On December 16, 2021 I was informed by [xxx] at portland Volvo that she spoke with the district manager and that a used engine costs between $10-14,000 and that Volvo of north America has decided not to help because the car is now out of warranty but [xxx] from portland Volvo admitted it was a manufacturer's defect. Not only has the car been seen periodically throughout its lifetime at Volvo dealerships and was seen in July 2021 due to two recalls that needed to be fixed at Volvo in exeter, nh. They did a multi-point inspection on the car and everything passed and only 3,500 miles had been put on the car since. I have all the paperwork proving all of this. I have also read articles on these kinds of issues and it states that a recall is to be repaired until it fixes the issue, and obviously the issue wasn't fixed the first time. I asked for an appeal, was denied and now Volvo wont respond back to emails or calls.

Car has had regular oil changes and was well below the recommended time for the next change when the engine began knocking in September. I took the car for inspection at a Volvo mechanic repair shop and was told all of the oil was gone and engine is damaged beyond repair. No engine or oil indicator light came on to warn me that the oil was low. I understand the 2011-2012 models were recalled for this issue and apparently the problem continued to the 2013 model. The car has low mileage and I am shocked that it is now effectively totaled. I am now without a vehicle and feel that Volvo should have to correct the situation and that a recall should be issued.
I was driving on my way back home. When my car started to knock. As I was slowing down to pull over. My oil pressure light came on. Granted, the reason was unknown. I had just recently checked the oil level. I got out to check the dipstick to find smoke coming out where the dipstick was. Curious as I was, I had no oil which left me puzzled. After some research, I found that my car had a recall on it for oil consumption. I called and asked a rep if they could verify if my vehicle was serviced for the issue. But without a doubt, he said it was. I just want to know if the problem was fixed. I currently can't crank my vehicle. I even dug into it myself and found that I had a bad starter nd battery. The contact pulled over and parked on the side of the road and turned off the vehicle but it was unable to be restarted. The contact stated the vehicle was not drivable. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA campaign number: 13v592000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. Very high oil consumption. Has gotten worse past 20000 miles. Vehicle has about 82000 miles now. Im having to add 6 to 8 quarts of oil in between oil changes.
Oil consumption problem. Vehicle has gone in multiple times. No leak found. Volvo is just over consuming oil. It needs a full quart every 500-1000 miles or less. Low oil light comes on within 500-1000 miles. Have to add an entire quart to reset the light. There is no manual dipstick. This doesn't seem safe. Volvo knows of the problem. They are not taking accountability. There is a class action suit.
I was on my was home from work and I engine started to malfunction in the middle of the street I got help to push out of the street waited a few minutes and it started back up thank god it got me home but now I’m still having problems.
While I was going down a small side street that is a hill, the air conditioning system suddenly went off and immediately the entire car's mechanisms ceased. The engine stopped and the car was unstearable and the brakes were not working. I had my foot on the brake and that was not responsive, the car slid with all electrical systems not working and the brake not holding the car or stopping the movement of the car. I could not start the car to get the engine going. I could not stop nor start the car that slid into a major street that is a thoroughfare for a hospital. I had no control of the car at all. I attempted at least 7 times to start the Volvo that requires keeping your foot on the brake and turning a small switch that is located right next to the cup holder. Nothing would work. I called Volvo on call who instead of immediately helping told me to call 911 since the car slid into the middle of the major street and it was an emergency regarding my safetly . A police officer came after a few minutes and blocked the traffic. Meanwhile, I was suddenly able by the 9 or 10th time to start the car and move it to the side of the road. The police officer drove in back of me literally a block away from where the Volvo dealer just happened to be located. There were no warning messages prior to the car ceasing. The car is now in the Volvo dealership who upon receiving it said that I must have gotten the ignition switch wet. This is totally false. I did not have any liquids nor should that be a reason why a car suddenly stops and becomes a piece of metal in the middle of the road. What's worse was that there is no emergency brake on this model. My life was in danger and I am lucky that I was not hit. A passenger got out of her car and stood next to mine in the middle of the road with oncoming traffic coming at my driver's side. Volvo dealership is claiming it's the starter switch and it must have shorted. There is a defect and safety problem requiring investigating.

I had the car about 3 months from a dealership. I was driving through the hills near my house, at first no problem. After about 4 turns or so this red light would come on saying something like low oil pressure and the car would stall a bit til I was out of the turn. Didn’t say anything about needing oil or anything. I would have gone straight to a gas station had there been one. My only option was to turn around when I could at the bottom of the hill and go back. The car did the same thing on the way back. I got the car home without further problems parked it and planned to have it checked out first thing when a drove the car again. A couple days went by I decided it was time to have the car checked out. Got in the car started the car and the car started making an extreme rattling noise. I thought maybe something came loose I popped the hood and the rattling increased the the car stalled and stopped running before I got a chance to have it checked out. I started looking on line and found that the were hundreds of people with this same year make and model that the same happened to them . I tried to get my insurance to pay for it but they wouldn’t go for it. I went back online and learned that this issue is something Volvo knew about for many years and said it was limited to models 2012 with vin62 which my car is but only for like a three month period of time during 2012 . I thought they are obviously trying to limit the amount of responsibility they have to people like me who unknowingly purchased a Volvo expecting to have a quality car that would last many years. If you read the hundreds of blogs from people who’s cars engines failed exactly the way Volvo said of the cars Volvo was willing to recall and repair because it is Volvo’s responsibility to do so. I got lucky that the engine didn’t fail as I was driving through the hills. I and others could’ve been hospitalized or killed thanks to Volvo only informing a very limited few of this issue.
I was driving my car and one day I got a warning to stop car immediately that there was no oil. I get regular oil changes and maintenance. I checked the oil and it was empty. There are no leaks, nothing burning out of the exhaust. I added oil and 2 weeks later same warning, I have to add oil 1-2 times a month. I took the car to Volvo and they couldn’t find an issue. I took the car to family mechanic and he said there is a known issue w Volvo cars pistons rings going bad and causing oil to burn. He said there is a class action law suit about this very thing. I took the car back to Volvo dealer and they found the issue and want $8000 to correct it. Volvo knows about their faulty piston rings. They even acknowledged it at the dealer and told me to put something in my oil and keep adding oil monthly. They told me the car will be fine as along as I add oil. However I don’t feel I need to add oil to a car 1-2 times a month. I’ve also had error warnings that there is no coolant. Volvo also knows about this and refuses to correct or recall the car.
Received a notification from Volvo USA, acknowledging an excessive oil consumption problem with certain model from 2013 to 2016, our 2013 S60 being one of them. Apparently it is a known design problem relating to pistons/ring, which can potentially damage the engine. This notification stated that Volvo voluntarily extended the warranty to 8 years and 100,000 miles, which of course excluded our 2013 S60! how is it that Volvo can get away with this?? should this not be a recall? there was a class action against Volvo on this specific problem, but was resolved outside of court. This means that a handful of owners got compensated, but there are a lot more of us out here, trying to figure what to do about this!!! do we need to start another class action? the government should not let corporations like Volvo get away with this!!! please do something about this! ??????.
As I approached a red light I began to slow down and my car started to shake and then it turned off I was unable to turn on my hazards to warn other drivers or pull over to the side, after a couple seconds the lights came back on and I put the car in p and started it again. It happened again later on the same day.
Car never warned of low pressure or oil low. Car started to shimmy and blow white smoke. It can no longer be driven. Piston heads blew due to lack of lubrication. Will cost approx 7 to 8 thousand to fix.
2012 Volvo 60, needs new engine. Volvo states its not worth repairing at 81k miles. VIN # yv1622fs5c2090046 this car was purchased certified in 2015 from bill gray Volvo, 2897 murrysville road pennsylvania, 15317 I bought a certified 2012 Volvo S60 t5, VIN # yv1622fs5c2090046 in 2005 from a dealer in pittsburgh, PA, with 17/k. I maintained the car, with all the required service. The car drives runs well, the check engine was on and when I took it for a state inspection, I was told it had internal engine issues: mis-firing, no compression on cylinder # 1 and low compress on #2 cylinder. I was told it's too expensive to repair. It's well under the 100k warranty, with only 82/k miles but over the 5 year warranty period. I was told replacing the engine is not an option because it will cost 13k even a used engine will not work.

I recently had a recall on a Volvo for door latches. When looking at other recalls, I found that the oil pressure light on my vehicle, indicating low oil pressure, was a recall on a prior year, same make and model. I did further research and discovered that the car had a possible recall of the wrong date of manufacture. I was assured by Volvo that my vehicle was not affected; however, it is having the same issues, was the same make and model, says it was made in the same city, and I have had issues with the title along with getting an original date of sell for the vehicle. I bought it from a buy here, pay here place, and it had an yellow x on the inside of the drivers side door. I think it was affected by the prior recall and that I can not get all the needed recalls because the prior misprint of the year was never corrected before it was sold to the dealer.
I have 86,585 miles on the car and have followed or exceeded the manufactures recommendation on oil changes. Now I am told after my last oil change that the engine is consuming a lot of oil. At 80,000 miles my Volvo dealership changed the type of oil they were putting in the car from 5w-30 full syn. To 0w20 full syn. I believe there is a problem with the engine and Volvo knows it by trying to stop the oil usage by changing the type of oil they recommend. What do I do if I have a engine problem with my car ???.

When the car's eco start/stop is on, the car will shut off for no reason forcing me to turn off the car to restart it. Sometime it happens when the car is stopped but a few times the car was in motion when the car just turns off. This has happen at least 10 times since I owned the car. The last time was 1/27/20. I was almost hit from behind by another car.
My S60 2015. 5 abruptly cut off when at a standstill "stationary" in traffic and on the highway traffic the warning system sound came on, as if close to an object, then the screen flashed on then off one time. Within minutes of a complete stop, the car cuts off completely. The screen displayed "turn on engine. " my car had to be placed in park before the engine would start. This had occurred at least three times in 2019. I was wondering if anyone had this experience. The issue was unable to be dupicated and no fault code.
The engine compartment was destroyed by a fire. The car was parked and unoccupied when a doorman noticed the problem and called the fire department. Sffd extinguished the fire.
