2 Engine Failure problem of the 2001 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 09/19/2005

For several months prior to failure, engine torque would fluctuate at steady highway speeds with or without cruise control on. Although it did not affect the speed of the vehicle visibly, I could feel it in the seat of my pants. After getting off of the highway (in a bad detroit neighborhood and in the middle of an intersection), the engine failed to accelerate the car and the information display indicated "performance reduced. " I proceeded five miles to my home at no more than 10-20 mph which was all the car could muster. The car restarted normally the following morning and I was able to take it to the dealer. The dealer replaced the electronic throttle module and associated gaskets along with a software upgrade for approx. $1062.

3 Engine Failure problem of the 2000 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

We own a 2000 Volvo V70 xc wagon. It was purchased new. In the last 4 months we have had the car into the Volvo garage (tom wood) to have it fixed for rough running and failure to start. The first time we were charged over $600 to replace the etm and a cleaning. It did not help fix the problem. We then tried an independent foreign car garage. They cleaned the throttle body but again the problem persists. We now have the car back in the Volvo garage because in addition to rough running, it now fails to start on a random basis. I read today about your preliminary investigation into this problem - your file number pe05041. I can only say that this is a real, and serious, problem. While we have been lucky that the engine failure did not happen at speed, it has caused major inconvenience, unproductive costs, and significant loss of time. Please pursue this investigation with all haste. Thank you.
