Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Volvo V70 based on all problems reported for the V70.

1 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2006 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 11/20/2017

Main engine wiring harness destroyed, engine still ran- temp, fluids, cam timing, mass air flow, fuel rail, throttle position -sensors, instrument panel. Had checked oil two days earlier, was no damage. Wind screen washer light came on when I tried to start engine, checked and found damage -was one of the sensors which was damaged - fluid bottle was ok. Some minor wires were still attached. This could have happened on the highway and caused an engine malfunction. There was always a slight odor in hot weather or when on a long run- was the soy based polymers Volvo used without any "odor inhibitors", the looms coverings do biodegrade quicker in hot weather exposure without an inhibitor and disintegrate leaving the loom to open up and be exposed to damage! the hood insulation was also destroyed and had to be replaced total replacement and labor $2. ,827. 42.

2 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 05/12/2015

I was driving at about 35 mph. When I slowed down to make a 90 degree right turn, without warning the engine and power steering went off as I was turning. I had to manually steer the car and luckily did not crash because there was no car in the opposite lane. I pulled over to the side of the road, restarted the car, and received no error message. I took the car to the local Volvo dealer where they could find nothing wrong and deny this is a recall issue.

3 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

Approximately two months ago, my car began shuddering and bucking in a random fashion, and getting no power to the accelerator. I contacted my mechanic, and since it couldn't be duplicated and at that time there was no "check engine" light on, there was nothing that he could check. This continued with varying degrees of intensity until last evening(12/15/09) at approximately 6:00 pm. As I was merging onto the highway, the car began shuddering intensely. I down shifted and it continued. Without warning(and while having fully merged and reaching the highway speed of 65 mph), the car died. I was able to pull to the shoulder without incident. The check engine light came on and remained on when I restarted the engine. It again died within a few feet. After a third attempt, I was able to restart the car and exit the highway and return home. In researching the possible cause, I came across the description of the following NHTSA recall on certain '03-'04 models(07v226000). My dealership informed me on the following day that the issue with the car was indeed the fuel pressure sensor, and that my car was not part of the recall. I know from other V70r owners that they too have had the same issue, and that Volvo USA is aware of the problem. I would like for an investigation into the recall be expanded to more of the vins that were produced in '03-'04. Had I not been able to pull over to the shoulder immediately(I was in the right hand lane), I could have been in a serious accident. The highway in question is a 3 lane highway that was quite busy and it was fully dark at the time that the engine failed.

4 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2004 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 12/30/2008

I was driving alone in napa, CA at night on Tuesday, December 30th. I signaled to make a right hand turn from 30mph (so I was braking at the beginning of the turn and during the turn). About half way through the turn, I lost all power, power steering, brakes, etc. All of the dashboard lights went on - car was dead. I was trying to brake and steer to miss colliding with a parked car - to no avail. The car came to a stop about 1 foot from the a parked car in the opposite lane from where I was supposed to be. Fortunately, there was neither a waiting motorist nor a pedestrian walking at the intersection, as I most certainly would have hit them. While in the wrong lane, facing the wrong direction (by about 30 degrees) I managed to start the car immediately, but not without an oncoming motorist having to go around me. The same thing happened twice in October of this year - I brought it to my local Volvo dealer/service shop where they found "nothing" wrong with it. I did my own online research, finding similar issues and a recall citing problems with the fuel pressure sensor. My dealer replaced that part- and it has been running without incident until this Tuesday. Worth mentioning: in each incident, I was braking from no more than 30 mph. I had at least 3/4 tank of gas (the first time it occurred I was leaving a gas station!).

6 Gas Recirculation Valve (egr Valve) problem of the 2002 Volvo V70

Failure Date: 08/31/2003

My new Volvo V70 with only 7000 miles almost took my life as well as my 18 month old son's life! I was driving down a four lane road when another driver motioned me to pull aside. I thought I had a flat tire so I pulled over. The car was on fire! when I looked back the car had flames shooting out from under the driver and passenger seats from the under carriage. Within 5 minutes the flames engulfed the car and the gas tank exploded! I was able to take nothing with me, I lost everything in the car down to my purse! the saddest part about my story is that nothing in the Volvo warned me I was on fire!! my husband notified our local Volvo dealership who in turn contacted Volvo north America. On September 23, 2003 we received a letter from a jaye linnin that stated "a Volvo field technical specialist thoroughly examined your vehicle. There was extensive damage to your Volvo and based on our inspection and available information, we did not conclude a Volvo product related condition as the cause of the situation you reported. " I am dumbfounded! I would like an explanation as to why my new Volvo caught fire as I am driving 35 mph and then burnt to the ground!! I am extremely upset my the way Volvo north America responded to us in their letter. I received this e-mail response on 10/6/03 from her after she received the above. We are sorry our previous reply was not acceptable and we realize that there may be times when that may occur. Again, we regret to learn of your unfortunate experience with your 2002 Volvo V70. As we previously stated, there was extensive damage to your Volvo and based on our available information for the inspection, we did not conclude a Volvo product related condition as the cause of the situation you reported. While we regret you may not concur with our determination, unfortunately, we are not in a position to further consider this matter. Sincerely, jaye linnin.
