2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Audi A4

Failure Date: 04/20/2019

My vehicle was burning oil faster than normal. I have since had my car in the shop several times before oil changes were due to top off oil do to several lights coming "min oil", "oil pressure too low". I have had several oil consumption tests each year as well as parts replaced: pressure regulating valve, crankshaft damper and seal. Had a 40 point inspection in 2014 at 44k miles and in 2015 requested a multi inspection at 55k miles. I had several oil consumption tests around theses dates: 3/714, 5/7/15, 11/12/15. After they changed out parts I had to change 4 fuel injectors in 2016. To fast forward I had all oil changes on time and had to add oil several times in-between services. On Jan 11, 2019 I had another oil change, they replaced my oil sensors and breaks. 4 months later my "low oil light" kept popping up when I would turn. After checking the old 4 times it kept reading 3/4 full of oil. After I felt the car running strange I pulled over to buy oil and at this point I checked and it was bone dry. I put a quart in and at this point the car wont start. I had it towed to the nearest Audi dealership who told me I need a new engine and a new timing sensor. They said the amount of damage the timing belt had done caused the engine to need total replacement. Yet never spoke about why the oil sensors kept giving the wrong reading. Since I have owned my car from Aug 2013 it has burned more oil than I want to believe which makes this car bad for the environment and the air quality.

3 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2018 Audi A4

Failure Date: 02/26/2019

Involved in a three car rear-end accident. I was the very front car (car 1, white 2018 Audi A4) which was completely stopped that took the least force of the impact. Car 2 (Tesla medel s) was also stopped but took brunt of force from at fault car 3 (Dodge SUV) who came barreling in. My car took minor damage to the rear yet my 2018 Audi A4's collision protocols disabled my car and left it completely undriveable. The seat belts also pulled back and locked up leaving me unable to rebuckle my seat belt after the accident. This meant I was stuck in the middle of a busy highway unable to move to the shoulder with no protection besides the shell of the vehicle. After the fire department arrived 15 minutes later, they had to spend considerable time reading through the manual to figure out how to manually disable my brakes and took 4 firefighters (1 steering and 3 pushing) to push my car to the shoulder. Meanwhile, the at fault driver (car 3) was able to drive away from the scene of the accident after completing police activities. The collision protocol of automatically tightening seat belts, putting on hazard lights, dialing road-side service, rolling down windows partially, and braking itself was great. However, disabling the car and leaving the seat belts unusable afterwards left me in a dangerous situation that could have been even a worse second accident. A flatbed tow truck was called in by Audi roadside service and of course they recommended an Audi certified collision center.

5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Audi A4

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

While driving on a city street, the wheel steering suddenly blocked and it was not possible to steer the vehicle to the left nor to the right. Managed to stop the vehicle on the street shoulder. Diagnostic at the body shop: power steering belt broken and even missing. Need replacement.

6 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2010 Audi A4

Failure Date: 09/17/2016

Oil consumption issue resulting in constantly topping-off oil, purchasing oil by the cases. Audi of America clearly states that the Audi dealership is required to fulfill the repair obligation, since my vehicle is within the 80k mileage/8 year time frame, Audi is liable to make the relative repairs. However, the Audi of tysons dealership seems to believe otherwise and refuses to assume the responsibility of repairs. The dealership completed part one of the testing and requested that I return once the oil light illuminated. After returning to the dealership, the resistance began. After providing consistent service records of oil changes that exclude the "odometer readings", the Audi dealership did not go to the next phase of testing/repair. As a result, the vehicle has stalled on the beltway(risky). Assuming responsibility of a repair now would definitely alleviate a costly price to pay should an accident occur related to this problem. Someone needs to take immediate recall action now or pay a major price later! not the way to value a consumer and a poor way of handling the matter!!!.

7 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Audi A4

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

The vehicle had a long standing oil consumption problem commonly known on this model and year vehicle which Audi acknowledged by authorizing a repair. As a result, Audi of America and schmitt's Audi in bowmansville, NY agreed to replace the engine piston rings to address this problem. Although I reported the problem multiple times during the warranty period, Audi did not agree to perform the repairs until after the warranty expired. The engine was taken apart by schmitt's in October 2013 at just under 57k miles, the timing belt was removed and the piston rings were replaced. However, approx. 3,000 miles later, on June 30th, while driving 60 mph on I-90 the timing belt snapped without notice, causing bent valves and major engine failure. The car came to a stop in the middle of the highway split with rte. 219 which was a very dangerous situation. The police had to come to provide protection from traffic. Schmitt's was the last to touch the engine but denied responsibility for the belt failure and stated that the timing belt was defective. Audi of America denied that the belt was defective, even though according to the 2008 Audi maintenance schedule the belt was not due to be changed until 110k miles. The belt broke at roughly half the mileage it was recommended to be changed at. Audi denied all responsibility for the $4200 engine repair cost and stated I was out of warranty therefore no coverage was available. I had extensive communications with Audi president scott keogh's office and with schmitt's Audi over a 6+ week period trying to resolve the issue, to no avail.

8 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Audi A4

Failure Date: 09/26/2011

The timing chain (not the timing belt, which had been changed well before the recommended time) broke. This caused the engine to sieze immediate resulting in the car coming to a rapid and abrupt stop. Fortunately for me, it occurred at low speed on a very quiet street. Had it occurred on a freeway, serious injury or death likely would have resulted since the car decelerated so quickly I would not have had time to coast into the breakdown lane. Apparently failures of these timing chains occur commonly; Audi apparently has an extended warranty program for some cam follower wear problems (that may or may not involve a timing chain failure). But they do not list the chain or the follower as maintenance or inspection items, and give owners no hint that they should inspect the follower, or replace the chain periodically. Timing chain failures on zero clearance engines (vw has the same engine and apparently the same problem), will kill folks if they occur on freeways or other roads where an inability to coast to a safe stopping point will leave motorists at incredible risk.

11 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2007 Audi A4

Failure Date: 11/30/2009

Purchased the vehicle from mckenna Audi in norwalk with 25,302 miles and oem warranty. The first issue was an unusual vibration from the engine at 29,761 mi. Audi of mission viejo claimed there was nothing wrong. At 36,120 mi, the transmission failed and was replaced. At 41,940mi, ignition coils were replaced after complaining of vibration/shuttering/hesitation. At 46,163mi, complained of shuttering/hesitation. Hose seals & timing belt roller were replaced. At 46,934mi, complained of same issues, Audi of mv claimed there was nothing wrong. At 48,552mi, complained of burning smell coming from engine, rough idle and vibration. Cam plug and injector were replaced. At 52,811mi, the entire engine was rocking back and forth (have video). Circle Audi of long beach replaced crank case & breather valve. Engine vibration/hesitation/shuttering continued after this repair. At 55,600mi, the vehicle suddenly without warning attempted to change into a lower gear (or park) while driving at 70 mph on freeway. This major mechanical failure could have led to injury or death. Vehicle was inoperable and towed to rusnak Audi of westlake village, CA. The transmission was replaced for a second time, after less than 20,000mi. At 56,000mi, the car is now vibrating, shuttering, hesitating again (only 1,000mi on "new" transmission). It is displaying all of the same issues that led up to the major mechanical failure on the freeway. Audi of mission viejo claims it is due to a leaking/cracked motor mount and improper transmission calibration. As you can see, the same issues have been occurring since time of purchase, and despite minor repairs, the transmission always fails. I believe the vehicle is irreparably flawed and unsafe. Audi of mv has also been neglectful. Audi of America (corporate) has been contacted. My request for a buyback due to the dangerous nature of this vehicle has been denied.

13 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2003 Audi A4

Failure Date: 09/08/2008

I have a 2003 Audi A4 1. 8t, which I bought as a certified pre-owned vehicle. I've had a slew of problems with this low-quality vehicle from the get-go, but that's a whole other story. Upon taking my car to the dealership (Audi chandler in chandler, az) for a separate problem, they told me that they would conduct a free inspection on my timing belt since they were required to do so. And guess what? surprise, surprise, my car was supposedly one of those with the known faulty timing belt. Keep in mind this car is under the "certified" pre-owned warranty, but for some reason, this was chalked to wear and tear. My car only had 62k miles on it, and the oem recommends inspection at 80k miles and replacement at 108k miles. To avoid a possible future accident (I have small children), I had to cough up $1000 to replace the belt, tensioners, water pump, etc. I submitted a reimbursement form for my expenses to the firm handling the class action lawsuit against Audi/Volkswagen about faulty timing belts. The settlement was supposed to have been made on 11/4/08, but it's now in the middle of January 2009, and nothing. I agree with someone else who posted online before. . . Why do these oem's have to wait until someone gets badly hurt or dies until they admit responsibility for their faulty, defective pieces of junk that are way overpriced?? plus, if my car was truly a certified pre-owned vehicle, wouldn't Audi have disclosed that the timing belt would be faulty to me? or, how about replacing the belt prior to selling it again??? nothing was disclosed to me, and the class action lawsuit was opened in 2002. I am still seeking reimbursement, but knowing Audi's stance on their defective parts, they'll just chalk it up to wear and tear and wish me a good day. What's worse, Audi sold a million cars in 2008, which set another sales record for them. How can we get the word out to not buy Audi and buy a quality car?????!!.

16 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/17/2007

2001 Audi A4 1. 8 turbo at 99. 1k miles. The timing belt prematurely napped while the car was traveling in a busy morning commute causing car to disabled on the freeway. The timing belt failure caused extensive, additional damage to the engine that estimated to coast about $6000 to repair. I have all my maintenances done at the Audi dealers and follow all the recommend service by Audi. I was never been recommended to replace the timing belt on my all previous visits for maintenance service. The recommended timing belts replacement by Audi for my model is 105k miles. Both Audi dealer and Audi denied been in responsible for the timing belt defect and/or incorrect timing belt maintenance recommendation which subsequently result the engine damage and provide any assistant. According to Audi, they do not guarantee the timing belt will last to 105k miles, only that it is their recommendation.

17 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/10/2007

The contact owns a 2001 Audi A4. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle lost power and shut off. The vehicle was unable to be restarted and was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that the timing belt snapped. As of July 30, 2007, the vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 99,000.

18 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Audi A4

Failure Date: 03/02/2007

2001 Audi A4 1. 8 turbo: the timing belt broke while the car was traveling in heavy, rush hour traffic causing the car to be immediately disabled and stopped with no opportunity to move the car off of the highway. The 3-lane highway was backed up for 6 miles while police and emergency workers worked to tow the car. The disabled car led to a very dangerous situation with traffic backed up for over 1-hour on a 3-lane highway with a 55 mph speed limit and could have easily caused additional accidents. The timing belt failure caused extensive, additional damage to the engine that is estimated to cost about $5,000-$6,000 to repair. My Audi A4 has the same 1. 8 t engine and item (timing belt) as in the 2001 vw 1. 8 t and that item has been recalled. The timing belt defect in the 2001 A4 appears to be quite well known to the two Audi dealers that I frequent. Since I bring my Audi in for service at the regular intervals - and since the timing belt issue is well known to Audi - I would have expected the Audi dealers to bring this issue to my attention so that we could have replaced the belt as part of regular preventive maintenance. The fact that this well known problem was not handled in preventive maintenance led to a very dangerous traffic incident and caused extensive damage to the vehicle's engine.

19 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Audi A4

Failure Date: 12/16/2006

I have an 2002 Audi A4. In December 2006 the car suddenly stalled while traveling on an extremely busy interstate. This occurred with no warning at all. After having the car towed ($200 plus) we found that the timing belt had failed which in turn completely destroyed the engine. The car only has 45,000 miles on it and we followed all recommended service. This belt should not have failed and by doing so put my family and everyone else on that highway in a horrendously dangerous situation.

20 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Audi A4

Failure Date: 11/10/2006

I am an owner of a 2000 A4 1. 8t Audi. The owner's manual states that the timing belt should be replaced at 105,000 miles and also states that it is a "long-lasting" belt. I have 95,000 miles on my vehicle and the tensioner and damper failed when I was driving on the highway at a speed of 65 mph; the car just stopped, and I had to navigate through four lanes of heavy traffic to the shoulder in a car with no power- scary and dangerous! the car had to be towed to the mechanic's, and since I was 5 hours away from home, I had to rent a car for the next 12 days while it was being repaired. $3300. 00 later, and after two trips up there (10 hours round trip from home) I got my car back and was informed why the whole thing happened (defective parts). The mechanic showed me all the damage that was done-including all 20 broken and twisted valves! apparently, Audi knows about these problems, and others have experienced the same thing, but Audi has never made any attempt to notify me or other A4 owners of this serious and dangerous problem. This is a finicky car and when the timing belt goes, it also causes significant engine damage, which is very costly to repair. Because Audi knows of this problem, and has not informed the customers, and because the owner's manual indicates replacement at 105,000 miles, I will adamantly pursue reimbursement from them through their corporate office. I read of one other person on this site who had the exact same problem--if you have also, please post your complaint!.

21 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2002 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/31/2006

In December of 2005 my red oil light came on, I was advised that my car needed an oil change and to bring it into the dealership. Instead of Audi repairing or replacing the engine at this time, they simply changed the oil. In June of 2006 my red oil light came on. The next day the engine in my car began making horrible noises and driving very, very poorly. . My service advisor called me and asked me how often did I change and the oil and who changed the oil in my car. I advised them that they are the only ones who have every worked on the car. He called me back and advised me that Audi was replacing the engine in my car. I again was never told about the sludge problems. I was made to feel that I was "lucky" because they were doing me a favor by replacing the engine. At the time that the engine was replaced I was also told that I needed to pay to have the timing belt, ten rollers relay and the water pump replaced. A cost to me of over $500. 00. I was told that they were doing me a favor because they were not charging me for the labor, just the parts. In July 2006, I noticed that almost all of the coolant had leaked out of the new engine and was on the floor of my garage. I took the car in for service and was told that there was no leak and that sometimes when an engine is replaced there might be an air bubble and that might cause the coolant level to drop. I again advised the service advisor that the coolant was on the floor of my garage and that without a leak somewhere it could not just come out of the engine. They again checked it over the weekend and advised me that they found a couple of drops of coolant but did not know where it was coming from. I suggested that they drive the car and see if there was a leak. They did just that and found the leak, the major leak. My service advisor stated that the part that was leaking was an old part from the old engine and that I would need to pay $375. 00 to have it fixed.

22 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2001 Audi A4

Failure Date: 01/04/2006

I have an Audi A4 1. 8 t and the hydraulic timing belt tensioner lost its pressure witch made the timing belt slip, forcing the pistons into the valves and bending them, causing the engine to basically self destruct after only 89000 miles when the owner's manual only recommended changing the timing belt after 120000 miles. I called Audi, and they told me they would fix it for $5,000 and don't feel I should be the one paying for this when there was nothing I could have done to prevent this problem.

23 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Audi A4

Failure Date: 12/19/2005

I own an 1999 Audi A4 1. 8t. On November 19, 2005, I took my Audi to tyson's corner Audi dealer in tyson's corner, va. At the time, my car had 79,000 miles and the dealer casually mentioned that I need to have my timing belt replaced at 90,000 miles. The dealer did not inform me of any other problems with my car. Subsequently, I drove my car. Then a few weeks later when I was driving my car at 65 mph on the highway, the timing belt suddenly gave out and the car engine died on the spot. I could have also been killed on the spot. At this time, my car had 80,000 miles, no where near 90,000 miles that the dealer casually mentioned. I am writing to you to inform you of this malfunctioning timing belt problem. The timing belt damaged the engine and the dealer is quoting me $7,700 fixed my car. When I asked about the warranty with the timing belt, the dealer denied any wrong doing, falsely informed me that there is no warranty associated with timing belt, and above all asked me tow my car if I was not going to have it repaired at the dealer. I am fully aware of the class action law suit on 1997-99 Audi A4 for the malfunctioning timing belt. Yet, the dealer denies any wrongdoing and even falsely informed me that there are no warranty associated with timing belt. When I called Audi USA customer service, the customer service representative also failed to mention any warranty but rather informed me that they cannot do much. They called the dealer on my behalf, but Audi USA was not willing to do anything further once the dealer denied any responsibility. My car is still damaged with no engine. Due to the class action suit, I believe that Audi USA not only needs to fix my car at no cost but also place a recall on all 1997-99 Audi A4 to prevent potential lethal car accidents. Hence, I am contacting the national highway traffic association, which oversees all recalls and has been documenting this timing belt issue with Audi.

25 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1998 Audi A4

Failure Date: 09/27/2005

The contact stated timing belt broke at the end of 2001. She stated that when the timing belts break on these Audis and bend the valves,e they will destroy the engine. She reported having no problems with the engine since then. She had the car towed in 2001. The bill was $4,468. 00. The timing belt went out at 80,000 miles. An advocate for Audi in michigan told her on 9-26-05 that they sent her a letter concerning the timing belt. They were unsure as to when they sent it. The contact searched the internet and found some information about a lawsuit filed against Audi. (9-27-05 the contact called the same advocate and asked her to check the reference number on the car, and the advocate told her that there was ongoing campaign concerning the timing belt. It was called the jk campaign. The control arm was called the je campaign. She has never received any recall letters and notified the advocate that she had never received a letter. The contact stated that in the maintenance book,it stated that the timing belt should not have to be changed until 90,000 miles.

28 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2000 Audi A4

Failure Date: 07/10/2005

I am an owner of a 2000 A4 1. 8t Audi. The owners manual states that the timing belt should be replaced at 105,000 miles. I have 94,000 miles on my vehicle and the tensioner failed when I was driving on the highway at a speed of 60 mph. Whenever I started investigating my options for repair of the vehicle I was informed that Audi has experienced numerous failures due to a problem with this tensioner. Audi has never made any attempts in notifying customers that there is a problem and that the tensioner should be replaced before the recommended 105,000 miles as stated in their owners maintenance package. The Audi have zero tolerance so whenever a timing belt fails there is significant damage to the head and valves. I was quoted a price of $7,500 to have the vehicle repaired by Audi, I choose to take the vehicle to another auto service dealer for repair which cost $4,000. I strongly feel that Audi should be responsible for the damage in excess of the required replacement of the belt due to the fact the they were aware of the tensioner problems and the damage if not replaced before what is stated in their owners manual, I believe that they have deceived the customer.

31 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 1999 Audi A4

Failure Date: 02/26/2005

The timing chain on my 1999 Audi a-4 1. 8 turbo with 76,000 miles broke as I was driving on a busy freeway during rush hour, leaving me a a potentially dangerous situation. Fortunately, my car was not hit by other cars. As a result, however, the engine and transmission as well as the timing chain were all trashed. The manufacturer recommends replacing the timing chain at 90,000 miles, but Audi of north America told me that they noiw recommend replacement at 70,000 or 75,000. They did not recommend it to me or to the dealer where my car has been serviced (following all the manufacturers recommendations) and the local Audi dealer said that since the warranty had expired they would do nothing.
