Audi A4 owners have reported 72 problems related to engine burning oil (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Audi A4 based on all problems reported for the A4.
Owned 1 year and just over 120ish miles timing chain jumped required head rebuild and the timing replacement. Soon as those were completed and car back on the road, oil consumption every 150miles with carbon buildup regularly on the rear bumper. Low oil pressure light soon to appear following up with water pump housing cracking, replaced the water pump and low oil pressure is worse than before this repair. Checked oil pan for sludge, oil pan full of metal, tear down the top end of motor inspection disclosed that both of the balance shafts and sprocket were destroyed teeth missing form gears, assuming that in addition to this that piston rings definitely must be fried so they will be replaced with the balance shafts repair. In addition to this entire engine being a lemon and needing replaced or rebuilt, 2 smaller issues I’ve had would be wiper motor is not even fast enough for major downpours so possibly needs replacement and also the rear backup camera is extremely difficult for viewing as it’s foggy/pixelated/shadowy and during rain completely useless.

Several complaints of faulty piston rings causing oil consumption to be 1 quart every 200/300 miles from Audi A4 models 2009-2015.
2002 Audi A4 with 370k burned a bit of oil which was fine cleaned the engine out with cleaners it smoked a bit which is normal. . Headlights started flickering hids so I parked it. 3 days later I go to take the car on a test drive and the drivers headlight lit on fire ! not sure if it was a headlight issue or a wiring issue. . Insurance will not cover it.

The engine burns too much oil from the pistols. I took it to the mechanic and it didn't have any leaks outside the engine so it they told me it burns the oil from inside the engine. And they cant fix the problem.

Audi knows about this oil consumption issue my car is one of the thousands of affected one it's require more oil just after 300 miles and Audi won't fix it asking for 6k to 7k to fix the engine I barely have 110k miles on the car. Audi need to recall their and fix it for free.
The car burns too much oil, need to add 1 quart every 700-1000 miles. There is no leak but the oil burns and you can see the exhaust pipes are black. It seems this was a problem in 2011 4 cylinder Audis and it was addressed by Audi.

Oil consumption really high. Burning too much oil, causing my engine to run on low oil, and ruining the engine.
Oil consumption issue, there is a class action lawsuit on 2. 0 Audi's engine that cover 2009 to 2011, mine is a 2013 with same issue though. So obviously issue has not been resolved in further production. I am consuming 1. 66 quarts in 600 miles which has been documented by my local Audi dealer. I was told call Audi USA customer support to start claim. I did and was told they understand that my car has an issue but since it did not fall in the years of class action lawsuit they would not be able to assist in any matter. Now I have done my homework and have found Audi does make acceptations but will do nothing in my case. Unfortunately I can not not upload documents from Audi because it has all my information and vehicle identity. But I can say my Audi case number is 190223866. So maybe Audi can respond to my claim in the appropriate way and extend their help to other vehicles with the same engine.

The car has been burning through oil. It has been requesting a quart of oil be added just about every 500-700 miles. About a year ago the problem started in early 2019 and at first it was just every 1200-900 miles that the car would ask for an extra quart of oil. Then in the past 6 months it has gotten worse asking for a quart of oil every 500-700 miles; this is all in addition to the regularly schedule oil changes.
This vehicle is needing a quart of oil every 300-400 miles. It's a 6 year old car, there is something seriously wrong with Audi engine design. A quart of oil every 300-400 miles is completely unacceptable. Since day 1 this vehicle has had an oil consumption problem now at 75k miles and the problem just continues to get worse.

I bought the car 2 days ago and on the way back from the dealership I'd already had to add a quart of oil, 2 days later after refilling and I'm basically back to zero on oil. I don't drive much so this is ridiculous. The oil consumption is much higher than it should be, I've driven maybe 400 miles and I've had to add oil twice. I've never had to do this with any other car before, this is mad.
I recently purchased the vehicle from an independent dealer three weeks ago. 200 miles into driving the vehicle the oil light came on. I took the vehicle for an inspection and oil change. The vehicle passed inspection, but the mechanic noted very little oil in the vehicle, even though the next oil change wasn't for 4,000 miles. After driving the vehicle 600 more miles, the car indicated low oil again. In 2015, Audi lost a class action lawsuit for this issue. In the service records, this vehicle underwent the first stage of repairs to correct the issue in Jan 2017, when the vehicle was covered under the warranty extension granted by the lawsuit. The repairs did not work. Audi has confirmed that this is the issue most likely affecting my vehicle, and they refuse to cover it. My vehicle is below the mileage specified under the warranty, but has missed the year specified by less than 3 months. This means that Audi knowingly auctioned a defective vehicle without fulfilling their warranty obligations and deceptively passed those obligations on to independent dealers, knowing that the issue wouldn't be uncovered in an inspection. I've attempted to contact Audi to resolve this amicably, but they wont grant an exception. They told me to just keep putting oil in the car, but the oil burns at such a rapid pace, I will have to add new oil every 2 tanks of gas. This will result in thousands of extra dollars spent a year. The dealer I purchased the vehicle from is claiming that they're not responsible, but I suspect that both parties were aware of this issue and have decided to pass on the burden to the consumer. All I am asking for is for them to correct an issue they were already aware of and had attempted to fix. The warranty may have been missed by less than 3 months, but this issue had been identified prior to that. Otherwise, I will need to spend $4,000+ to have this repair.
2012 Audi A4 has had ongoing oil consumption isuues. Audi dealer performed consumption test done around 74k (3qts per 1000miles - basically have had to add 1 qt every 300 miles. Was told no recourse - was outside of class action lawsuit of 2009-2011 of similar issues. Now at 133k mile, engine seized without warning - epc light came on - car was serviced less than 25k miles and had all 4 fuel injectors, 4 spark plugs and 2 ignition coils replaced and DE-carb procedure done. I'm at a loss that Audi refuses to accept responsibility for faulty engine.
2. 0t engine burned 1qt of engine oil every 800-900 miles. This cause a lot of bro lemme by adding oil and environmental.
Excessive oil consumption, this car drinks an extra quart of oil per month. No leaks on the driveway or in the garage.
I just bought the car from leasing it in may 2018. They did a inspection at Audi and about 3 weeks later the engine got stuck and car smoked from hood. These A4 have excessive oil consumption which can damage engine. But Audi sells vehicles with faulty engines and says its normal. . . . . . But no it is not. They sell unsuspecting consumers vehicles with faulty engines. . . . I got stranded on highway in heavily smoking vehicle. . . What is now useless. I was terrified.
Takata recall. I noticed that my car consumes lots of oil due to the engine oil consumption. Anytime I perform oil change, it won't last longer than 7 days.
Upon having 3 consecutive oil changes, my car suddenly began to burn oil (no leaks) after the first oil change upon driving less than 900 miles. Then the second oil change did the same thing upon driving under 300 miles. It actually ran out of oil totally. I added oil as instructed by the car, and it burn the oil withing 250 miles of driving. I took it to the dealer, who acknowledge that this model and year had the wrong engine put in the vehicle. They would need to replace the entire engine at my cost, with possible reimbursement to me. Not acceptable, since they acknowledged the defect. Oil continues to burn at a very high rate and potential cause additional engine problems while driving.
Vehicle burns a quart of oil every 150 200 miles it's very common and several years many complaints on the internet.
Driving vehicle home and it started shaking got the car home and when I shut it off and turned it back on it rattled and sounded like metal I turned it off and then I turned it on again and this time it didn't turn on at all I had it checked by mechanic and he told me that those Audi and that year had an oil consumption problem and so he checked the engine with a diagonate machine and it said chances are there can b major engine problem it said the machine said the chain jump and could have cause piston and rod places sad car is in great shape and looks good and has low mileage now it needs a engine replacement.
High oil consumption for years, from faulty pistons and piston rings leading to catastrophic engine failure. Repeated conversations with my mechanic and review of Audi blogs shows that Audi USA knows about this problem and has done nothing to repair it. We were told the high oil consumption was within parameters, but now the car is no fixable for a reasonable rate.
In August 2015 with 66k miles my Audi experienced a turbo failure which, because of the oil consumption class action, was replaced by my local Audi dealer free of charge. They then performed the oil consumption procedures and while they cited redoing piston rings and some other seals, the oil light issue is still present. An important note here in regards to braman Audi who handled this service. . . When they did the complete block removal in order to handle the piston repairs, they did not replace the rear mail seal that is apparently known to fail around 75k miles, so there I was dropping another $1500 for a rms replacement of a $50 part because the Audi certified dealer didn't think to replace what's known to fail before reassembling the block. Here we are now about 2. 5 years later and with 94k miles, and my timing chain has failed inside the block and I'm being told my entire engine might be toast. How can you possibly claim an oil consumption issue that causes turbo and piston failure, and not cover the timing chain that runs the whole system? this is ludicrous, has cost me significant time and money while the car itself isn't worth but maybe $6k. Now I'm looking at a chain replacement at $2k or a whole new engine at $10k plus. Might as well put a sticker on the new Audis that says the car will have negative value after 65k miles. My car now won't run at all and has been at the mechanic for months waiting for someone to step up and take responsibility, manufacturer or dealer, either way they are both aware of major flaws in their manufacturing and do nothing about it. Sounds like consumer fraud to me.
Excessive oil consumption. Car was purchased at texas direct in stafford, texas. Car consumes approximately 1 quart of oil every 600-800 miles. At this rate I am consuming 15-20 quarts between regular manufacturers oil change recommendations. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Oil consumption is horrible I'm refilling a quart of oil every few hundred miles. I bought the car used and I did receive notice of a recall on the vehicle regarding the oil consumption issue.
Excessive oil consumption engine problem.
Tl the contact owns a 2011 Audi A4. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced excessive oil consumption and the engine warning indicator remained illuminated constantly. The contact stated that the failure occurred twice. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
This car has a massive oil consumption issue. A week after having an oil change the low oil light comes on after approximate 150 miles of driving. I started happening in February of 2017 shortly after the engine malfunction light came on . I took it to the dealership and after they ran the required tests that failed, was told that Audi put the wrong engine in the car and that I would have to pay $8k for them to fix it. This is not my problem, it is Audi's because it is the same issue that they settled in a lawsuit years prior. It is nerve-wracking to drive because, I never know how much oil is in the car.
Excessive oil consumption issues, check engine light is on and Audi wants to charge me $12,000 to repair the oil consumption due to their being damage to my piston rings. I am the second owner of this car. During the time that the first owner had the vehicle there was a class action law suit that had been filed and settled against Audi do to the manufacturer malfunction which caused the excessive oil consumption problems with the vehicle. By the time I became the owner the suite had already settled. At this point I don't know what to do.
At 70k car was consuming oil every 1k having to top off a liter of oil. Dealer adv this was normal because of turbo engine. Ignored the issue until got worst topping off every 750mi's then to every 200-300mi. Dealer checked & adv needed turbo assy replacement before they would check on the oil consumption issue. Cost to repair $3,925+ tax. Couldn't afford that so lived w/issue for a while. Doing research on internet I found this was a very common problem w/this car/year and there was a class action lawsuit & Audi had to pay to repair for this oil consumption issue for free but only if you put the claim in by a certain date. I didn't know of this so I complained to the Audi dealer but it was too late for my car to be honored. The dealer then would perform a oil consumption test for $300 with a few new seals and bolts. If after the test it still consumed oil rapidly they advised maybe Audi corp would honor the repairs or at least help cover a partial amount since I was a dedicated customer getting all my services done at Audi. After testing it failed & was diagnosed that I needed new pistons/turbo etc. To fix this. Basically sounded like a new engine. Went to Audi corp. & submitted the complaint & all showed all receipts of services done to the car to see if they would help honor the repair but end results they didn't do much & was advised by dealer it would cost me $7000 to fix. I ended up declining service from the Audi dealership & went to a local Audi mechanic shop to at least perform the turbo repair & that cost me near $5k. This is a lemon of a car & Audi knows it! there should of been a recall for this fix but instead let their customers suffer spending loads of money on repairs.
In nh and bought A4 used; within 2 weeks noticed oil leaking from tailpipe, dealer said it was nothing; then started burning quarts of oil in weeks, dealer said the pistons were not the right match and it was a recall that had expired, "fix" was $4000, months later engine light comes on, car still burning oil.
My car jump timing today. I first had and oil consumption issue with new piston and rings installed. And in 2015 and rear main seal went out. Now in 2016 the motor jump timing pulling out of the garage this morning. Great plastic timing chain tensions Audi refuse to ammit they a junk. Thanks Audi for a great quality car.
High oil consumption from faulty pistons and piston rings leading to catastrophic engine failure. Broke exhaust valve at highway speed while on interstate. Audi aware of defects but denies responsibility. They refused multiple reasonable requests for help in repairs.
