Air Bag Not Deploy Problems of BMW 325 - part 1

I was driving by myself on the freeway and a rubble the size of a basketball was rolling towards my path. I do not know if it fell from a construction vehicle or it already hit another car and that the rubble just ricochet towards me. Anyway I was going 65 miles per hour and was in the middle lane and there were cars on both sides and a car not too far off behind. I never had the chance to avoid the rubble so I just braced myself and hope that the rubble would get past me. Unfortunately, it hit my left side and elevated my car around 2 to 3 feet from the ground and flattened my two left tires. The airbag on the front passenger side deployed, the one on the door and the one on the upper roof panel. None of the driver side airbags deployed. I just had a little whiplash from the impact but I was fine. I contacted my insurance and upon inspection they considered my vehicle a total loss due to the damages. I also contacted BMW and have yet to notify me of why the driver side airbag did not deploy on where the impact occurred. They did a recall service on my vehicle around March 2020 for the airbag. After the service there were no airbag lights or any warnings on the dashboard. In the event of the accident, my vehicle went to an sos mode which slowed down the vehicle and automatically turned on the hazard lights. I was able to pull to the right shoulder of the freeway and had it towed. Hopefully the car manufacturer could send notice to owners of this car model that could have the same issue with airbags on the side of impact not deploying.

I believe the seat sensor in my 2006 BMW 325i front passenger seat is faulty. The majority of the time, the light comes on that shows that my front passenger airbag is not on and also that the passenger is not buckled, whether they are buckled, or there isn't a passenger in that seat at all. Whether I am stationary or driving/moving at any speed, those warning lights are on, and will intermittently go off for short periods of time, then they come back on again. I am in a carpool so I frequently am the driver and I have someone in that front passenger seat. I am concerned that if in an accident, the airbag will not deploy causing injuries in the case of an accident. Newer models of the same car have this seat sensor on recall, so the 2006 should also be recalled.

My daughter got into an accident where the front fender and bumper hit the side section of another car going approx 20 mph on a city street and the air bags never deployed. Luckily no one was hurt.

I marshal brister and courtney duncan were on a local back road in our town when my rear frame member on the driver side had snapped and pulled us into the oncoming side of the road into a large ditch where we took out a fence post and clipped a fiber optics line indicator post then into a colbert the airbags did not deploy on my front window post nor on my door the front driver steering wheel and passenger dash board airbags didnt deploy until after I marshal brister hit the steering wheel and after passenger courtney duncan hit the dash board. After deployment the airbag module started sparking then caught on fire we both put out the fire before exiting the vehicle then patiently waited for the local mccomb ms police to arrive then we called the local wrecker service to pull our BMW from the ditch then had it hauled to the local wrecker yard for pickup at a later day for a fee for storage and initial tow. I do not know if the rear frame was due to a manufacturing flaw or due to a prior owner but that was what caused the accident. The airbags on the other hand did not deploy at the proper time causing us to become slightly injured but not hospitalized but most defiantly dazed and confused for the most part. . . . I also have more pictures of the the accident report.

My car is optioned with power, sport seats and currently has 126,969 miles. For over the last 2k miles the airbag light has come on and stayed on while driving. This indicates to me that my airbags will no longer function in the event of a crash. There are open recalls for this make, model, and year of BMW yet interestingly enough, my car and many others that exhibit this similar issue remain excluded from the recall. I have contacted BMW and they say I would have to pay for any diagnosis and repair. My car was never in a crash and the airbags have never been deployed. There are many points of failure in any car along with Bmws that I expect and have no problem paying for. Safety issues relating to faulty airbags, modules, or their wiring is one that BMW should always cover. I find BMW's response completely unacceptable and I request an investigation be started on behalf of the many BMW drivers with a similar vehicle and faulty airbags as mine who brave the roads daily confident in their vehicle's ability to protect them. The front passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor mat has failed and giving an air bag and seat belt warning lamp on the instrument cluster along with pass air bag off light continuously on. BMW claims that my vehicle had a limited warranty extension for 10 years from build date, but I did not receive any such notification although I am the original owner and also lived at the same address. BMW will not approve a warranty repair as they said the 10 year period expired in 2015. The failure of this sensor could cause the air bags to not deploy in the event of a front end crash.

A faulty passenger occupancy airbag sensor warning light has been repeatedly appearing. Own research suggests that as a result of this fault the passenger airbag may not deploy in a crash. This problem seems to be extremely common to Bmws from around this time and a non-deploying airbag would pose a life-threatening safety risk. BMW has as yet apparently refused to issue a recall.

I took my vehicle to henderson BMW in nevada regarding the takata airbag recall. They put an airbag in my vehicle that is not compatible with my sensors. Knowingly and deceitfully, they placed this airbag in my vehicle. Then, the airbag light came on and when I called, they said if its a sensor problem, we are not liable but if there is something wrong with the airbag we installed, then we will replace. There was no airbag light on when I took my vehicle in for the recall. I took my car back to henderson BMW in nevada so that they could correct the problem and the light issue. They charged me $170 (I disputed this charge) to tell me it is a sensor problem, which they knew before they even installed this airbag. They now want me to pay 1200 to correct this sensor problem that they created in my vehicle, knowingly. They will not take responsibility for the damage they knowingly caused my vehicle. Further, before this recall, at least I had a decent chance in an accident. Now, they r risking my life and the lives of my passengers because with the airbag light on in the vehicle, the airbags will not deploy in the event of a collision. So, all the time I spent :(20 hours); the miles I spent (600 miles) the money I spent on gas (80); further, I am disabled and had to have someone take me to henderson, twice and now they have chosen their side, against the consumers who purchase their products and I have a problem that they are responsible for; however, they will not step up to the plate.

On may 12, 2014, as I pulled into my driveway, I put the vehicle into park, so that I can open the garage door, to get inside of my garage. As I put my foot on the brake and proceeded to put the vehicle into drive, the vehicle surged forward unexpectedly, at a high rate of acceleration. I instinctively applied the brakes, however, this sudden unintended acceleration, safety defect, caused me to crash into the backside wall of my garage, thus causing extensive damage. It should be noted that the airbag failed to deploy, which may have something to do the November 2013, BMW recall relating to air bags. The mileage on the vehicle was 14,240, at the time that this sudden unintended acceleration defect, manifested itself. The vehicle was towed to my local BMW dealership, however, because this sudden unintended acceleration defect, is more than likely, embedded operating system related, the dealership's service technicians were unable to find a hardware related, mechanical cause, to this stated defect. On may 30, 2014, I picked up my vehicle from the dealership, with my husband accompanying me. As I arrived on my street and about to put the vehicle into park, the vehicle surged forward unexpectedly, once again, almost striking my postal carrier. My husband, as well as my postal carrier, were witnesses to this second incidence of sudden unintended acceleration. The mileage of the vehicle, at the time of this second occurrence, of the stated defect is 14,247. It should be noted that sudden unintended acceleration has plagued BMW vehicles, since at least the 1990's. BMW 325 1990, BMW 750il 1991, BMW 525 1992, BMW 318is 1993, BMW 528i 1997, BMW 328i 1998, BMW 318 1998, BMW 528i 1998, BMW 328i 1999, BMW 528i 1999, BMW r1100 1999, BMW 750li 2006, BMW 530i 2007, BMW 1 series, etc. , have all been reported by BMW owners as having this sudden unintended acceleration, safety defect.

Passenger seat pad sensor failed and says air bag will not deploy. Even though there is a recall notice for this model, yr and mode of failure, the dealer reports that my vehicle was made 1 week before the recall affected vehicles. Is this true and could there have been an exception for 1 week? repair shop indicates this is an identical failure mode to recalled vehicles and seat pad will need replacement. Seems to be too big of a coincidence to not also be related?.

Doing some research on the issue, I located a recall notice in 2008 for this exact same issue which included my 2006 325i and another recall in 2013 and that BMW had extended the warranty for this issue for an additional 10 years. The seat mat wiring was determined to be faulty which cause the vehicle sensor to engage the warning/indicator as it could not determine if a passenger was in the seat or not and therefore the airbag would not deploy in case of an accident. I confirmed my vehicle is experiencing the same recall issue from 2008 and 2013 recall with a local BMW shop and was instructed to contact BMW of northamercia becouse based my VIN# it was not part of the recall and I would have to pay for the diagnostic test,parts and repair s out of pocket. I contacted BMW of northamercia and was told that my vehicle make,model and yearwas part of the Nov 2013 recall but could not specify based on the VIN number if my vehicle qualified. ??? this is the same exact issue. Why would my qualifying vehicle not be under warranty for the same make, model, year and recall issue as the other vehicles being recalled? why would my VIN be excluded from having the same exact issues?.

I am writing to you to address a current NHTSA safety recall affecting my vehicle (and presumably many similar vehicles). I currently own a 06 BMW 325i 4dr and have recently experienced a front passenger seat detection mat malfunction. This sensor malfunction affects the deployment of the front passenger seat airbag in the event of a collision. The error codes my vehicle is displaying are the same as those addressed in the NHTSA safety recall campaign number 13v564000, dated 13 Nov 2013. The NHTSA recall indicated BMW is recalling 06-07 3-series equipped with seat types that may produce similar errors due to cracking that develops with age. This cracking is true in my vehicle and has been verified by local mechanics. In Dec 2013, I consulted my local BMW dealership to determine if my vehicle was covered under the NHTSA safety recall. I was informed by the dealer that my vehicle was covered* under any current recalls and included no extended warranties. I informed the dealer that an NHTSA safety recall currently addresses my vehicle's problems; however, it did not seem to be their problem. In Jan 2014, I contacted BMW na to address the same issue. I was informed that an NHTSA recall did affect current 06 325i vehicles, however, their recall only affects owners of vehicles with "sport" seats. They informed me while, my vehicle is experiencing similar issues, BMW na did not plan to recall non-sport seat sensors. Frankly, I find it ridiculous that other vehicles with the same year, make, and model are experiencing the exact same malfunctions and errors as my vehicle. In the end, my front passenger airbag will not deploy in the event of a collision for the same malfunctioning seat sensor, yet, BMW has turned a blind eye to myself and I presume a large number of owners with this same problem.

Several months ago I noticed that by airbag disabled light flickering on and off while driving. At this same time the overhead light passenger airbag disabled would flicker off and on. Since then it is currently on the whole time, even if someone is sitting in the passenger seat. Thus my passenger airbag will not deploy even if I am in an accident. I read this recall and assumed that my car would be covered under the recall since the recall lists my make, model and year as being covered. However, the when I called my dealership they said that my VIN is not covered under the recall. So I do not understand why the recall lists my make, model and year as being covered (plus I have the exact faults listed as to why this recall is occurring) but the dealership is telling me that their records show I am not covered. I do not believe BMW is being honest about all the cars that are affected by this recall.

Air bag and passenger seat belt indicator on center dash cluster lit up during normal driving. Took car to dealership for repair and was told the air bag seat mat was bad and needed to be replaced. Also told that repair would cost $900. Decided to eat cost as it is a major safety issue as air bags will not deploy during a crash. Total cost for repairs: qty 1 part# 52-10-7-244-127 basic seat u 1 cost $385. 10 , qty 2 part# 52-20-1-964-201 clip 13 cost $3. 84 , qty 35 part# 52-10-945-543 clamp 134 cost $$22. 40. Total parts=$411. 34 ; total labor=$554. 60, total bill for repair=$965. 94. I would not mind if this would be the end of the issue, but it is not. I picked up the car from daniels BMW of allentown on June 14 2013, and today (June 21, 2013) the issue came back. 7 days after I had the car repaired for the issue, the exact same issue reappeared. This is a major concern of mine as the front passenger seat of my car is almost always in use by myself or my spouse. After doing a bit of reading on BMW online forums, I see that there is a recall for for the exact sensor mat as installed in my car, for almost all other seats containing the exact seat mat, but not for my car, and others like me. I have gone onto the BMW na website and did a recall search for my car and found that the recall does not apply to my car. This is a major safety issue for BMW and they should stand behind their product and repair all seats affected without question. I will be taking my car back to daniels BMW of allentown for courtesy repair and hopefully they will replace. . . Again. . . . The broken mat for free. Hopefully this will not be the beginning of an ongoing reoccurring issue.

No accident ever occurred, but the vehicle developed a passenger airbag problem. I eventually had it fixed for about $1100 -- the sensor in the passenger seat had to be replaced, or else the passenger airbag would not deploy in an accident. Other 3-series in that year received free replacements of the defect, but when they ran my VIN, they said my car didn't qualify. Seeing as it apparently has the same problem as these other cars, I'm not sure what the distinction is, as it is a serious safety issue.

Airbag light stays on, there are many that have the same issue and BMW has an active safety campaign 08v-384 but owners are being told that the VIN is not effective, thus it is not covered. Yet, when you ask the dealership what VIN is covered, they do not know. Contacted BMW corporate office and was told they are not able to search any other BMW except the VIN that I can provide. Would it be possible to obtain all the VIN that are effected under recall 08v-384? I just hope no one gets seriously injured in an accident just because the air bags did not deploy. I bought this car for it's safety standards and now will have compromise or spend $1400 to have it repaired.

My car started displaying a warning that there was a malfunction in the passenger restraint system. Took it to dealer who said that there was a low voltage issue with my battery and fixed it. 2 weeks later the warning reappeared. This time, when I took it to the dealer, I was informed that there was a defective sensor module in the seats and that the airbags would not deploy in the event of a crash. Even though the NHTSA issued a recall for this specific malfunction (NHTSA campaign id number: 08v384000), the dealer refused to fix the module under warranty. The cost of this repair was quoted to be $1400 and is out of my budget, and even though this is a noted safety defect that BMW is aware of, they refuse to honor the recall claiming that my car's VIN number is not among those covered by the recall.

When an adult is seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, the air bag service indicator, no seatbelt indicator, and "passenger airbag is disabled" indicator are all illuminated. When taking my vehicle in to the local BMW service center to diagnose the issue, I was told the cause was a faulty passenger seat sensor mat (have documentation), which is meant to detect when a passenger is present. In addition, I was told in my vehicles current state, if I were to get in an accident with a passenger present, the passenger airbag would not deploy. While performing independent research, I found that BMW has released an official recall (#08v384000) which describes these same symptoms, caused by a defective passenger seat sensor mat. In the recall details, the make, model, year and seat type all match the specifications of my vehicle. After discovering the recall information, I contacted BMW of north America representative by telephone. I was told that because my vehicle VIN is not on the recall list, the repair must be done at an out of pocket expense. I am filing this complaint because the defective seat sensor reduces the safety of the vehicle passengers, as well as violates air bag regulations established by the NHTSA. Since this is a defect, the cost should be covered 100% by the manufacturer, BMW.
