BMW 328 owners have reported 39 problems related to car stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I bought the 2013 BMW 328xi brand new in 2012. Last year, I spent $2,000 replacing the high pressure fuel pump after my car stalled in the middle of driving. When I was going in for a routine inspection, my mechanic informed me that the timing chain needs to be replaced and the cost is very expensive. Upon further research, I found out that this is a prevalent issue with BMW owners, especially with the n20/n26 engine. I even found out that there is a pending class action lawsuit claiming that the timing chain BMW used was knowingly defective! as of now, my car is worth about $10,000 and the cost to fix this issue is almost half the value of the car. I have not gotten the timing chain repaired yet.

Stalled on busy express highway, almost resulting in crash. Towed to shop. Fuel pump was defective and it costed 729. 86 dollars plus 140 dollars towing. This occurred at 60 mph on express highway.
I have had to replace 2 ignition coils in less than a year. #1. Was told by warrenty CO that there is also a TSB (technical service bulletin) from BMW recognizing a problem with the brand of coils (bosch) that were installed from the factory, & they want shops to replace them with an upgraded brand (delphi). There is obviously a problem with these ignition coils. Who is responsible to pay for changing them out?.

On way home today 7/12/2019 car stalled out. I had very little brakes, steering was hard to turn and car slowed down quick. It started back up but then the passenger side window started going down on its own, and the a/c stopped working, and the drivers side window will not go up, and it keeps getting a warning going on then off then on says something about brake lamp control malfunction. When I got it home I left in driveway for a while when I tried to start it back up I started getting transmission failure warning and something about the engine. Then later the car did start up without the warnings but still has the original problems.

I was driving on a busy highway and the vehicle randomly stalled and lost power. Drivetrain malfunction trouble lights lit up the dash. I was barely able to get out of traffic before coasting to a stop. I had the vehicle towed to BMW south austin and it was diagnosed with a faulty fuel transfer pump, and a faulty fuel tank. Essentially I had run out of fuel with 1/4 tank showing on the gauges. BMW denied my request to repair the vehicle under warranty, even though there is an extended warranty on the "in tank fuel pump". I guess people need to die in traffic when they run out of fuel unsuspectingly for BMW to care or issue a recall.
I was on my way to my aunt's funeral when the car stalled in the left turn lane at a busy intersection in the city (denver; evans and university) and would not start again. I called triple a and a tow truck hauled away the car after being honked at for twenty minutes, with other driver's going around us by using the side of the road meant for driver's going in the opposite direction. The garage mechanic from auto station says that the problem is broken bolts on cam phaser; they found one bolt; three others are missing. We have to purchase a new engine at a cost of over $7,000.
Error - "drivetrain malfunction: drive moderately. Maximum drivetrain output not available. Consult service center. " this was taken to the dealer (BMW of silver spring, MD) at first. They said it was thermostat issue. So, they installed a new thermostat and I paid my $100 deductible. The same error started appearing again just a few days later. The car suddenly shudders, jolts and shifts from eco mode to comfort mode if driving on freeway. If the error appears when the car is parked, the car does not switch from park mode to drive mode until you totally you shut down the engine, then restart and drive out immediately. Instantly, it shows "drivetrain malfunction" error on screen. The engine make a groaning noise. You can feel the power of the engine is significantly reduced. You have to hit the accelerator pedal deep to extract power out of the engine. The tachometer (the right dial on dashboard) moves up in the region of 3x1000 to 4x1000 /min range even to get to a speed of 30 miles/hour. So, when driving moderately, it can suddenly stall. This is a huge safety risk on city roads as one can get hit and be rear-ended by a car from behind with your family inside the car. I feel much unsafe driving this car now. BMW should fix this drivetrain error on install a new engine altogether. My car is still under warranty. This is a recurrent error, and it does not go away. I am losing faith in BMW.
Car started loosing power a month vehicle stalled on the road when I was driving almost creating an accident.
Tl-the contact owns a 2013 BMW 328i. The contact stated while driving 40 mph the vehicle stalled without warning and the vehicle failed to shit into neutral. Additionally, a unknown vehicle crashed into the rear of the BMW. The driver sustained injuries to his neck, back, a head concision, rupture of blood vessels, face contusion and medical attention was provided at the hospital. There was no fire due to the crash. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a unknown independent mechanic. There has been no update on the status of the vehicle. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The failure mileage was 79,000. Ap.
Over the course of three days, while driving my 2010 BMW 328i on a highway at a rate of speed of 65-70 mph, the motor stalled, shut off, died, lost power causing me to have to get to the breakdown lane by forward momentum alone. Very dangerous because the other cars on the road have no idea that my car has no power. After sitting for approximately 15 minutes, I tried starting the car and it started right up and I was able to drive it as though nothing was wrong with it. I called my BMW dealer and am bringing it there tomorrow. He said that the repairs may be covered and that they would know better after looking at the fuel pump because there may be an issue with it. The car only has died while traveling on an interstate highway at a higher rate of speed. Extremely dangerous.

"vanos system recall" I attempted to start my vehicle and it stalled while driving. I contacted a mechanic who stated after a diagnostic test it was discovered that my vanos bolts were damaged. I also did my research and discovered that BMW has an nationwide recall on a defect in the vanos unit housing group for the years 2010-2012. My vehicle falls under this but when I attempt to look for my vehicle recalls there is none. Please help me with this issue.

While driving car completely stalled out for no specific reason. This occurred on freeway with cars all around I was lucky to be able to coast to shoulder. Checked on board vehicle status all checked "ok". After a short time car started right up drove it home and next morning it stalled out again while on a city street. This time unable to put into neutral, electronics worked, had to flat , had to flat bed it to the dealer. This makes this car dangerous and unreliable. Car is currently in for repairs. Attached is the recommended services have not received completed work report.

My 2011 BMW 328i (I am original owner) has ~53000 miles but is showing symptoms such as engine misfiring, rough idle, loss in power and acceleration. Car almost stalled on the highway a couple of times. The diagnostic codes indicate ignition coil and spark plug issues but this is not usual for a car with only about 53000 miles. Please investigate if there's any known issues with these components.

This vehicle has stalled numerous time when driven (in motion) at low speed on a city street. It has happened again 2 days ago when I was driving (in motion) and tried to make a right turn. The engine stopped and the steering wheel refused to turn. I would have been dead if another vehicle was coming from the other side of the road. This vehicle was taken to a BMW dealer's service numerous time for the exact same problem when it was under manufacturer warranty but the service and BMW USA always said that none of the other customers have ever reported this issue and they never heard of it from another customer.
While driving(in motion) my vehicle will completely stop running and stall out. I took the vehicle to a mechanic for a diagnostics, but he stated he didn't see any issues. This happens frequently.

I started my car and begin pulling out of my parking spot. When I shifted from reverse to drive and pulled my foot off the brake to push the accelerator, the engine reduced power significantly, stalled, and the car died on me within a few seconds. There were several messages that appeared once the engine had died including "engine malfunction", "service engine soon" and "dsc - reduced drivability". The latter stated that it was still safe to drive the car though caution should be used. However, when I tried re-starting the engine, it would crank and sounded like it was trying to start, but would not actually start. Fortunately I was able to get a few people in the area to push me safely out of the active traffic lane I was stalled in into a parking spot. The car was towed to the nearest BMW dealership where cause of issue is still being diagnosed; so I still do not know root cause for this malfunction. Luckily I was in a parking lot when this happened, however, the thought that the engine could just stop and die on me at any point, such as when driving at 60+ mph on the freeway, is rather terrifying. Further, given the low miles and years on the car, running into such a serious issue is rather unsettling.

On July 9, 2011, I was driving at a speed of 30 mph in the process of exiting the parkway, with my family in the car, when the vehicle suddenly stopped operating! there were no warning lights, and nothing worked in the car. I was unable to put on my hazard lights or more the steering wheel. As the car was slowing down I kept trying to re-start the car but nothing worked. After coming to a complete stop, by using my emergency brake, I was able to push the key in and out and hit the start/stop and the car finally started. I brought my car to rallye BMW to have it serviced and also contacted BMW corporate because I did not and do not feel safe in my car anymore. I was requesting either a new vehicle or full value back on the car. BMW serviced the vehicle and stated "BMW reviewed remotely unable to replicate stalling. No problem found", and decided that my car is safe to drive. I completely disagree and feel this possible life threatening issue should be taken seriously.
