BMW 328 owners have reported 12 problems related to engine shut off without warning (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Travelling at 60 mph on the highway I got a message "drivetrain malfunction". Before I was able to stop, the car shut down. It was towed to the dealer and they told me the plastic timing chain cover broke off and permanently damaged the engine. It will cost me $8300 to repair. After some research, I found others have had this happen and that BMW has since changed the design.

The engine of the vehicle didn't start with the sign saying "fuel pump malfunction. " I had the fuel pump replaced at the nearest BMW dealership. After a few days, I got a call from the dealership that the "car is running as it should. " 8 days later, the engine shut off on a sudden while driving on the local road. When the engine shut off, I completely lost a control over my vehicle. It was a Sunday morning, so there was no traffic. But it could have led to an accident, had there been more traffic on the road.

This vehicle suddenly shut off in the middle of the intersection. The entire car shut off and would not start again. You could not put the car in neutral either to get it off the road. The car would not move. This vehicle was on a 6 lane road starting to go from the intersection. I know this has happened to another person with an x3 as well. BMW is claiming this doesn't happen. I was driving a ralph schomp BMW loaner at the time because my 2017 x3 was in the shop. I have the other person's information should you need it. This is a huge safety issue. The other person this happened to was on a highway when it happened. It is unknown to me what caused this, but the vehicle flashed lights and told me to turn off the car. When I did, it would not start again. I am concerned that BMW is hiding this problem since I know the same dealership has had this issue before with the same vehicle. People need to be aware of this issue. Thank you.

Vehicle shut down while driving. First time when only 3 to 4 months old on a highway with 55 mph speed limit in heavy traffic, would not engage gear, had to coast while on the highway with flashers on to reach a safe location. Was repaired at the time - supposedly computer chip problem. Has now occurred for a second time at 16 months old, on a local road with 45 mph speed limit, vehicle indicated a failure and would not run after pulling over to shoulder. Both incidents were dangerous situations in traffic. Indicator on vehicle stated engine or drive train failure of some sort.

I was driving along the streets, while it was heavily raining. While I was stuck in traffic, my car suddenly stopped working (note: there were cars behind me, in front of me, and right next to me). While I was stuck in traffic and stepping on my brakes, the moment I let go of the brakes to move forward by stepping on the gas, it wouldn't move. Then I tried stepping on the brakes and the brakes stopped working too, so I had to put my car on park because I was afraid it would start rolling by itself without my control. When I attempted to put it back in drive, it wouldn't let me. The signal still said p for park, and it wouldn't work in reverse mode nor neutral mode either. Then I tried turning off my vehicle and tried re-starting it. When I tried to re-start my vehicle, the whole vehicle just shut down, and wouldn't start up anymore. All the other cars around me were able to drive just fine, and even had to drive past me because my car stopped working in the middle of the street during the rain. The firemen and policemen ended up coming to try to re-start my engine, but it didn't work, so they ended up having to tow my car away to avoid traffic (so all the other cars can drive through without going around me). BMW said my car stopped due to water damage, specifically damaging the engine, costing roughly around $18,000. However, all the other cars around me drove in the same lane, same spot, and same time in this heavy rain just fine. I don't know why my vehicle was the only one that was severely damaged by "water" when all the other cars around me were just fine. I believe there's something wrong with the car itself, for the car should be able to handle heavy rain like all the other cars that were driving just fine around me.
Driving home from work on Monday 07/14/14 at approximately 5:30pm and suddenly my car began to shake and the steering wheel locked. I could hear the engine shut down and the car came to a complete stop. I was able to get the car over to the side of the road and thankfully I was not on the highway. I received a letter from BMW in June 2014 stating they would be recalling my specific vehicle due to engine problems. I contacted them as soon as I received the letter but was told the parts had not come in yet and I should receive a 2nd notice shortly. I still have not received a letter and now I have not vehicle. This same issue happened to me back in September of 2013. BMW took the care and tightened some bolts on the issue and said I was good to go.
I was traveling on the PA turnpike near the quakertown exit at 75 mph in the left hand lane when my car shut down and came to a stop in active traffic. As the car was shutting down I had diffulty steering but was able to break. There were no visible error codes or lights to indicate issue. When attempting to restart the car, the engine would roll but I was unable to move. I called 911 for assistance. I was fortunate that a state farm highway worker stopped to protect me from high speed traffic coming up behind me until I could be safely moved off of the road. The car was towed to west german BMW in fort washington, PA. Cost for the above service was paid for by BMW under a "warranty extension" as this is a "known issue. " I was unaware of this issue as no recall or service notices have been sent by BMW to inspect or repair failing fuel lines. I am filing this complaint because the issues found in my car are exceptionally serious and could have resulted in a major high speed accident. Furthermore these repairs will appear on my carfax and will position my car to other buyers as one with major issues. During inspection and repair process several issue were noted. 1. No faults were stored in the vehicle. 2. Upon checking the fuel pressure, none was found @ rail 3. Upon removing the fuel tan cover they discovered that a hose popped off inside the tank 4. After reattaching, they were able to restart the car, only to have the hose come off again the next day as it was going through the courtesy car wash 5. After opening the car again, they found that the fuel line that was clamped on "line a" ruptured, full fuel tank and assembly replacement was necessary.

At approximately 4:15 pm on 4/18/13 I was driving on a busy roadway at approx 35mph in my 2007 BMW 328xi coupe, 65540 miles. All of a sudden the vehicles indicator light flashed orange for coolant temperature warning. Within 5 sec the indicator flashed red and the engine shut down as I proceeded through an intersection. There was no acceleration and I was left to coast out of the intersection. Luckily the intersection was slightly down hill so I was able to coast to the curb without being t-boned. Apparently this engine shut down is a designed feature in this model BMW (2007 328xi) to save the engine in the case of overheating. While this feature means well it is an extreme safety issue as other BMW customers have reported similar events while traveling on interstates and speeds up to 80mph (see bimmerforums and aboutautomobile). This type of event in certain situations could absolutely lead to loss of property and/or life. The air temp was approx 85f and I had been driving the car for more than a 30min in pre-rush hour traffic before the event. At the time, traffic was not stop and go and I was moving at a fairly consistent 30mph. There was less than 10-15 sec between the first coolant warning flashing orange, proceeding to red, and engine shut down. These were the only indicative warnings of a problem. The oil temperature was around 230f. After letting the car cool for several hours I checked the coolant which was in the normal range. I was then able to drive the car the remaining 1. 5 miles to my home. At home, I was able to replicate this overheating shut down event by turning the ac on and revving the engine from 2000 to 3000 rpm at a standstill. After about 5min, once again the indicator panel flashed orange, 5 seconds later red, leading to engine shut down almost immediately. This yet again replicated the short 10 sec warning before complete engine shut down.
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328i. The contact stated that the keyless entry remote would not open the vehicle's door. She was able to open the door manually with the key, but it became stuck in the ignition. The vehicle was towed to the BMW dealer. The 30g relay was replaced. On June 24, 2007, the failure recurred and the vehicle was towed to the BMW dealer. The key slide and the ribbon cable were replaced. On June 27, 2007, while driving 45 mph, the engine shut down without warning. The contact was able to safely pull the vehicle over. The vehicle was towed to the BMW dealer where it is awaiting a diagnosis. The powertrain was unknown. The current mileage is 1,299 and failure mileage was 700.
Consumer has problems with brakes and clutch. Those problem have been fixed by dealership. Vehicle shuts off without prior warning, and at this point vehicle shuts off without prior notice. There is a problem with engine.
