BMW 328 owners have reported 50 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The car is a 2013 BMW 328i sedan. The problem happened while the car was in park. I had a passenger get in the car and a warning appears saying "passenger restraint system malfunction". I took it to the dealership and they said the issue was the passenger seat occupancy mat sensor. There are known recalls for this exact issue for multiple models of BMW for a wide range of years. However, they said my VIN wasn't covered.

When front passenger is seated, light indicates passenger seat air bags are turned off! even with adults seated. Maintenance stated likely seat sensor faulty. Frustrated to see this is a known problem for this vehicle that was repaired for only one year of the 3 years affected. How many people must die first? happens stopped and in motion.

The passenger occupancy sensor mat gives an on and off faulty signal to the computer. Every other car start (stationary), the airbag fault related to the passenger occupancy sensor is illuminated and remains on until next car start.

Airbag system fault due to occupancy seat sensor p/n 65779153119. This sensor is used on BMW e90, e91, e92, e93 models from 2006-2012. BMW recalled only 2006 and 2007 models in 2014( recall notice 17v428) then revised in 2017 to include more vehicles. In addition, they issued a sb -10056703-9690 in 2017 to extend warranty to 15 years for this sensor. Since the exact sensor is fitted on vehicles from 2006-2012, and numerous individuals have reported the fault, I believe my e93 should be covered in the recall or the 15 year extended warranty. Based on research, many people have resorted to a bypass device. This extinguishes the fault but presents an issue if the front seat passenger is an infant/ or under 40 pounds. Airbags will deploy in case of an accident and death/ serious injury is possible.
Even after clearing the faults, I am continuing to get a warning of a passenger "restraint system malfunction. " best guess by BMW mechanic is that it's the front passenger seat occupancy sensor mat. I am told it's a "common BMW problem. " various chat room discussions confirm this. Some BMW models have had the warranty extended to cover this issue (by Bmwna) but not my particular model. This is a BMW-wide design flaw that affects the safety of the vehicle and BMW expects me to pay to fix their mistake.

The passenger restraint system is malfunctioning, which may affect the airbag. It does not recognize that the passenger has their seat belt on. Red lights are flashing and it states that the passenger restraint system is malfunctioning. I feel that the manufacturer should provide repapirs for a safety system at no charge. Not sure if it is a bad sensor or what. This happens when the car is turned on and a passenger is seated with their seat belt on. Date below is approximate. I have not taken it into a BMW dealership yet because over the phone, they said it may cost about $1,400 to fix.
The passenger airbag restraint malfunction sensor keeps popping up. I believe this should be apart of the recall associated with the senor in the seat malfunctioning.
The airbag sensor is broken on passenger side if not fixed it's is definitely a safety concern. Purchased used on 7/1/19 from a dealships and they do not want to incure the cost to fix it. If the passenger seatbelt is not buckled whether there's a passenger in the seat or not it will keep beeping until you put the seatbelt in the buckle.
Passenger restraint system error: when passengers sit in front passenger seat a warning comes on and disables airbag even when belt is buckled or not, driving or stationary. Warning stays on after passenger exits. Warning stays on for about 50 miles of driving and resets until the seat is sat in again. Online forums show recall for this in other models but not mine yet much is being reported. Seems the seat sensor pad goes bad. Very few people sit in this seat so the sensor system should not be malfunctioning/wearing out. It is intermittent but frequent suggesting it is the same symptom issue as other BMW models with recalled seat sensor pads.
The front passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor (oc3) mat has failed in my car. BMW extended the warranty on the e90 sedan and e91 wagon version of the 2007 328i but not the e93 convertible (which I have) the seat components are identical on all 3 model versions of that year. Why is the safety of e93 passengers less important than the passengers in the e90 and e91 when they share the same sensor? repair cost is $1,200 for a sensor BMW knows will fail. I want the 2007 e93 to be included in the extended warranty si b01 09 14.

Passenger seat occupancy sensor failure renders passenger seat airbag systems inactive when passenger seat is occupied. Vehicle is 2012 model year with approximately 80,000 miles.
Seat sensor occupancy mat malfunction: why is BMW not voluntarily recalling or extending this widespread known issue Bmws? this seems to be a common problem across many models of Bmws, forums are filled with so many complaints. After market manufacturers have created modules to bypass this sensor, which apparently is going to cause hazardous condition for some of the owners. There's a constant display on the dashboard that says, "pass-restraint system malfunction". Apparently it's quite a common issue across many Bmws and unfortunately BMW has not acknowledged it for all models and have done the recall for limited model between 2006 and 2007, 2008 was later added but my car was actually manufactured in 2009 so I believe this recall needs to be extended beyond 2008. On the forums, I saw and read owners of 2011 and 2012 also reporting this issue.
An airbag fault appears as passenger restraining malfunction. Keep wearing seatbelt and contact nearest dealer. this code came up over a year ago and the dealer cleared the code. Now it's back after being on and off for over 6months. This time it's constant and the dealer today said that the sensor pad under the seat / sensor has to be replaced. The coast is $1400. This is not right and fair. In case of an accident my passenger will not be protected. 1000s online complain of the same issue and BMW isn't doing anything about it.
The passenger restraint system sensor dings really loud when a passage or object is in the passenger seat. The sensors in the seat that tell the air bag to be on or off is messed up.
Passenger restraint system failure. The passenger seat occupancy mat sensor is bad, and BMW has recalled it for my 2006-2007 cars, but I have an early 2008 production car that has the problem. I believe this to be a dangerous safety problem and as it stands I do not believe my airbags will deploy.
Occupancy mat in passenger seat failed, which results in lack of airbag function. Same part number (52 10 7 244 128) is part of voluntary recall (17v-428) for 2006-2007 model year vehicles. I content the same issue extends into later years and should receive the same level of support from BMW. . Read more...
Vehicle at approximately 36,000 miles started exhibiting an intermittent warning for passenger restraint system malfunction. BMW of ontario, CA diagnosed the issue as a faulty seat occupancy sensor, but declined warranty coverage due to vehicle age and exclusion from 3rd party warranty. This appears to be a fairly widespread issue based 1) many of the online owner forums cover this problem. 2) the problem is widespread enough to support several manufacturers making and selling bypass\emulator devices to circumvent the failed sensor. A critical safety device for controlling airbag deployment should not be failing so early or frequently.
My passenger airbag sensor light for the seat keeps going on I've had this reset twice and it just keeps coming back on and now it does not go off . I was told there was a recall on this about 4 years ago it obviously wasn't fixed. . I was driving this last time when the light came on.
Passenger front seat occupancy mat/sensor failed, causing air bags to turn on/off, and trigger false positives and false negatives for minimum weight occupancy, thereby triggering seat belt alarm, and disabling/enabling air bags incorrectly. This was a recall in the same car, model year 2006. I would like my feedback on this subject to help initiate the same recall for the 2011 model year.
Due to hot weather condition (>85f), if the car parks outside more than 4 hours, then go to vehicle to start vehicle, both seat belt light and passenger airbag off light are on even during driving. But, after parking vehicle overnight or weather below 70f, there is no issue at all. It seems like the sensors to sensitive the hot temperature. It is safety critical issue and had to find out in dealer. BMW said to me it is out of warranty. This is sensor specification issue which is not handle high temperature. BMW should be responsible!.
In late 2017-early 2018 the passenger seat belt warning chime would come on occasionally when something less than 5 pounds was on the seat and no one was sitting on the seat. Eventually, it happened all the time when nothing at all was on the seat. I always needed to drive the car with the seat belt connected. I learned it was a serious safety issue and contacted BMW dealer in early 2018 when the car had 88254 miles and they said it was no longer covered under warranty and would cost about $1300 to fix the airbag sensor mat. I found a repair place to replace the oc3 passenger seat mat with BMW part for almost $900. I had no idea this was a common problem until August 2018 I received a notice for the exact same part for our other car, a 2004 x3 which gave a warranty extension and offered reimbursement if the part had already been replaced. I contacted BMW and they refused to offer same extended warranty for airbag sensor matts in my 2011 328i. Since my car experienced the exact same symptoms as those covered by the warranty extension and, I have found online that this is a common problem with many Bmws, the logical conclusion would indicate that there is a flaw with the sensor itself not specific to the x3 model. In fact the sensor has not yet failed in our 2004 x3 that has over 160,000 miles. The 2011 328 sensor had the same exact symptoms with a serious safety issue for the airbag system. I've owned many vehicles with this same feature and have never had any problems. At the very least a new investigation should be done to determine whether this is a serious issue for all BMW models. I drove for over a year with this problem until I realized it was a safety issue and the airbags might not work if the sensor was broken. It was very expensive to fix. My online research showed there may already be a NHTSA claim related to this. Thank you.
Failed pressure mat sensor, passenger airbags disabled BMW failure code (93c3 oc3) service bulletins issued, however existing recalls do not cover my VIN. Current condition leaves passenger airbag disabled.
Similar to the defect found with other BMW cars and suvs, the passenger seat occupancy sensor has cracked rendering the airbag system for the passenger seat inoperable in the event of a crash.
Seat sensor malfunctioning showing no passenger when passenger is seated. This may prevent seat belts from functioning and air bag deploying in the event of an accident and increasing injuries.
I see there was a previous recall for earlier models involving the seat occupancy sensor mats cracking. My 2009 BMW 328i convertible car now has the warning airbag and seatbelt light on if anyone is in the passenger seat. This occurs whether or not I am driving or not. I had my car scanned and the error code is 93c3 passenger seat occupancy detector. I am now concerned if airbag and seatbelt will work in case of collision.
Recall 13v044000 electrical system car is still affected by this recall and unsafe for driving. Vehicle has been losing power, stalling, jerking, sensors faulty, recall16v071000 airbags unsafe hazzard my son was driving the vehicle and the lights and sensors started to go, the headlight went out on the highway, he managed to get into the emergency lane and the vehicle completly stalled. He had no light including hazards on a busy highway at night. He could have been killed losing power while driving especially on the interstate. This has happened on more than one occasion and needs to be repaired, or refunded by BMW immediately. My son is 23 years old and should not have to fear for his life whenever he drives his vehicle. BMW claims the recall work was done, but this vehicle is obviously not repaired as far as the electrical system. The vehicle has lost power while I was driving on the city streets. I was stalled at the stop light and had to leave the vehicle on the side of the road abandoned. The vehicle jerks and loses power every time it's driven now.
Passenger seat occupancy sensor mat has failed disabling air bags in vehicle.
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328i. The contact stated that the front seat occupant protection mat sensor failed and caused the air bag, seat belt, and passenger side disabled sensor lights to illuminate when operating the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 75,000.
I bought my car at around 50k miles, after manufacturer' warranty had expired. It was fine for about a month after my purchase. One day, after driving from the store, my car indicated I needed to fasten my seatbelt. I was fastened in. So I stopped and restarted the car, thinking it was some weird electrical problem. I restarted the car and the same thing happened. I got home and the next time I got into my car to drive it, the display now shows" driver restraint system malfunction: continue wearing safety belt. Consult nearest service center. " I took the car to the dealership. The warranty I purchased does not cover seatbelts or airbag sensors. The dealer gave me a cost of replacement: $820. 52! I have read that others have had this issue. Yet, there is no recall. Why would it be okay for seatbelts and airbag sensors to stop working just after 50k miles?.
Passenger air bag sensor in the seat mat is defective causing the air bag to not read correctly the passenger weight and possibly deploying with a child in the seat. The light remains on at all times. There are recalls out for other BMW autos for this same reason 17v-428 - this model and year wasn't included in the recall list but is also carrying a defective part.
The contact owns a 2007 BMW 328i. While driving various speeds, the sensor for the passenger side seat activated while the seat was unoccupied. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the passenger detection mat needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 13v564000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
For two years my seatbelt sensor pad in the passengers side has been broken. The cost is $1400. I took it to the dealer only for them to say they don't see a recall on my car. I looked it up here and the same result. I research recalls on the 3 series 328xi on the internet and I see a seat sensor pad recall on some cars. What I don't understand is if it's the same sensor pad and/or same malfunction. Why is it only a fraction of the models? also it's unfair for you guys to make mistake with this information. By the time you have corrected the issue I will have died or paid for every defect out of my own pockets. Remember BMW is a business I am not. The new issues is something that I have never had happen in 20 years of driving. I hit an average size pothole and my suspension locked-up then later something snapped. It was the rear wheel drivers side. Its still in the shop but someone needs to look into the safety of all the vehicles and issue free repair or refund, ASAP. Also an issue with the fan but I a m running out of characters. To me it seems like most of the issue that you try to isolate by model are actual issues across all models and we need a solution. Better fix the issue now or later have someone's wheel come off on the highway. Or what if the air bag just never release? its your fault and BMW. You people sit on this information for years. They should be forced to come to my house and fix this shit!!!! or write me a check!!!!.
Passenger seat sensor failed (code 93c3), disabling potential airbag deployment. Apparently this particular VIN is not included in the current recall for this vehicle. Please expand this recall. BMW has refused to fix the problem under the recall, so we paid nearly $1,200 to replace the faulty oc3 mat.
