Engine Problems of BMW 335

BMW 335 owners have reported 10 problems related to engine (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Engine problem of the 2009 BMW 335

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

2009 BMW 335i has had engine run at half power numerous times. Only once was it able to be taken to the dealership in time for them to retrieve any diagnostic information and act on it at that point in time, however it has suffered similar behavior since this point and supposedly they are unable to retrieve data, even within a week or two of the event occurring and state that nothing is wrong with it. The first time this happened I was making a left turn and was relying on the acceleration of the vehicle to make a turn at a reasonable speed prior to traffic arriving and the car simply gave out and reduced itself to half power (per the error on the screen). Quite nearly got me in an accident. The fliing date on this is the most recent, to my knowledge, of the incident occurring. I wasn't aware of this site until now so it's possible the date is off by as much as 4-6 weeks.

2 Engine problem of the 2010 BMW 335

Failure Date: 08/22/2010

I was driving northbound on a crowded stretch of us101 in a 2010 BMW 335i coupe with less than 3200 miles on it. My car was moving at about 65 mph when suddenly I lost almost all engine power, making acceleration impossible. I had to ease my way off the highway and, after stopping to take stock of the situation, I drove home via side streets. My car continued to suffer from lack of power all the way back and could barely ascend some of the hills.

3 Engine problem of the 2010 BMW 335

Failure Date: 06/23/2010

While driving on the interstate at 70mph, the engine malfunction indicator came on. Power was suddenly reduced to less than 35mph. This warranted an immediate move to the slow lane of traffic and had to go several miles until it was safe to pull off the road to attempt a restart. Restart did not help, had to drive the car at 35 mph to nearest dealer for service.

4 Engine problem of the 2010 BMW 335

Failure Date: 03/09/2010

Problem 1 - engine malfunction indicator at startup. Car did not idle correctly and ran rough when driven. When driving, misfires and reduced power. Max speed achieved was 35mph.

5 Engine problem of the 2009 BMW 335

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

The contact owns a 2009 BMW 335xi. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the vehicle completely lost acceleration power. The contact had to drive at a low speed to reach his destination. The contact turned the vehicle off and restarted; after the restart, the vehicle functioned properly. Within two to three days, the failure occurred again. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the turbo high pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure continued. There had been no further repairs. The failure mileage was 18,681 and the current mileage was approximately 25,000. Updated 01/28/lj the consumer stated there was a design problem with the fuel pump. Updated 03/23/11.

6 Engine problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

2008 BMW 335i infamous failing high pressure fuel pump (hpfp). Symptoms of a failing pump are long cranks upon start up and if it fails during driving, it can leave you stranded. My hpfp failed only once around 22,000 miles and was replaced promptly by BMW.

7 Engine problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 06/29/2009

2007 335i coupe - car experiences a sudden loss of power while driving at normal speeds. Car omits malfunction warning lights on the dashboard. This car has had this happen now at least 3 times. The previous two times BMW dealer found faulty fuel pumps and replaced. Now, BMW dealer claims the car needs new cam shafts in the car, meanwhile engine has been taken out of the vehicle completely to attempt the repair. It seems like BMW does not want to acknowledge that the car has major issues.

8 Engine problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 08/16/2008

My 2007 BMW 335 sedan was recently updated with a new ecu software update (referred to as progman 29. 2) and since then the response has become unpredictable. Particularly the car had no turbo lag earlier and after the update the turbo lag has become very perceptible. This has made highway passing unsafe because the car does not behave consistently and sometimes will hesitate for a few seconds and then surge very quickly and at other times drive normally. The unpredictability and turbo lag makes highway passing quite unsafe especially at highway speeds and given the amount of torque in the car (surges are tough to anticipate). BMW does not acknowledge the problem and will not even do any tests on the car. They have been sending me in circles between their na office and local dealer.

Multiple incidents with "engine malfunction. Reduced power" aka limp mode. On my 2007 BMW 335i sedan. BMW replaced fuel pump once, but now seems like the problem is repeating itself.
