BMW 335 owners have reported 10 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
It started may, 2017, when my 335d was idling rough and jerked as I was driving at a slow speed. I took it into crevier BMW in santa ana. The car had 53,000 miles and they said it had carbon build up on the intake manifold and #1 & 5 fuel injector. They replaced the fuel injectors and walnut blast the manifold. Swirl ports, egr and throttle housing cleaned as well. Apr, 2018 58,000 miles, faulty active tank temperature sensor replaced. Aug, 2018 60,000 miles, replaced faulty fuel injectors #2,3,4,5 and faulty cam sensor. Jan, 2019 64,000 car running rough at idle. Started using fuel injector cleaner in fuel tank. This stopped the rough idle. Car runs rough every time if I don't add the injector cleaner. March 2020 73,000 miles, intake manifold removed and walnut blast again. Replaced both faulty nox sensors. Faulty codes on air mass intake. Nov 2020 76,000 miles, faulty fuel injectors # 1,2,4, #5 glow plug, mass/volume air flow, intake temperature sensor. Did not pass smog. Took to dealer and they could not figure out what to repair to get it to pass smog. Very frustrated. . .

Car stalled multiple times while driving. Each time it was a sudden death while driving. Every time got lucky that I was not followed by a truck and no one hit me from behind. Dealer replaced engine earlier, diesel pump and now dealer said reported all injectors failed. History: 1/5/17 - car stalled while in motion on city street - speed 30/hr 3/3/17 - car stalled again while in motion on highway - 50/hr 5/20/17 - check engine light - no stalling 5/31/17 - car stalled - on city street at red light. 2/13/18 - car stalled while driving - speed 50/hr 3/1/18 - car stalled - speed 15/hr - after stopping and starting at red light in city street. Downhill. No break . Started rolling down. Used hand brake. 3/7/18 - car stalled while driving in snow city street - speed 25 /hr repairs: 5/23/17 - egr cooler , injectors replaced 5/31 - 6/18 - car was at dealer and engine, intake manifold replaced. 2/13/18 - diesel pump replaced. 3/7/18 - car is with dealer - reports multiple injector failure.
My car keeps overheating and stalling or when I accelerate it will not go, I have to stop turn car off and try to go but the temp gage is not over 250 degrees when the displays says my car is overheating.

I was turning on to a highway, as I accelerated to match the speed of oncoming traffic and merge, the engine power abruptly degraded. I had to swerve out of the lane to avoid an accident. The vehicle had a flashing service engine light and was not producing any power. I had the vehicle towed to park Ave. BMW in NJ. The dealer diagnosed my vehicle with a failed dme (engine management computer or ecu) at less than 60k. After doing some research I found many others BMW n54 engine owners online who had encountered the same dme failure. It turns out an electrical component that costs a couple of cents was prematurely failing. This was known to BMW in 2007 when the vehicle was being sold. The BMW service builtin si b 12 18 07 clearly indicates that this is an unexpected failure and is caused by a defective diode. Further more the issue can damage coils and fuel injectors costing thousands of dollars. Replacing coils, injectors, and the dme can exceed $5000. Further more BMW chose no to be proactive and replace the component, instead they put peoples lives at risk, at best their benefiting from their own lack of quality.

Egr cooler is leaking and fumes are getting into cabin, it has disabled the abs and traction controls also cruise control! the fault came just beyond the factory warranty of 50,000 miles 4 year. I ready about your complaint service in a forum and BMW was able to complete the necessary repairs free of charge.

"limp mode" is a very well known issue affecting 2012-2014 BMW 335i models with the m sport package. After accelerating from a stop to 60-65 mph, and merging into traffic, I experienced limp mode. The car would not accelerate, the rpms would not rise above 2500 or fall below 2000. The oil temperature was approximately 200 degrees. During the sudden loss of acceleration and power, no matter how hard or far I pushed the accelerator, the car would not accelerate- the car completely lost all power and the ability to accelerate. As I was coasting, I tried pumping the gas and shifting gears (shiftable automatic) to no avail. There were no warning lights on the dashboard or other warning messages displayed. While traffic zoomed past me, I coasted for a good 30-60 seconds gradually slowing to about 15 mph. After roughly 60 seconds, I pushed the accelerator down again and the car bucked, lurched and jumped and the rpms began to rise. I was able to accelerate normally again though the temperature did rise to roughly 240. I made an appointment immediately to have the car checked by my local BMW dealer. They replaced the aux cooling fan and applied a software update as is the case with "limp mode". This is the same "fix" applied to countless other 335i owners which simply doesn't work. My dealer opened a puma case with BMW to resolve the issue. Standard operating procedure is to replace the fan and apply a software update the first time, replace the fan relay the second time and apply a software update the third time. None of these work!! check f30 post, bimmer world and bimmer fest forums. Dealer was great, but I wanted them I will fight for a buyback if it happens again. Had this happened a few seconds later, while pulling out in front of cars traveling 65+ mph, I would not be here now. Recall this piece of crap!! when my lease is up or if I can get out of it, I will. Not safe.

Due to premature build up of excessive soot and carbon in the egr, intake manifold, and intake valves of diesel engines, it was cause engine vibrations and check engine light to illuminate. Without costly repairs requiring egr cleaning/replacing, intake manifold cleaning/replacing, and cylinder head cleaning/ replacing, the car will not pass mandatory emissions testing. BMW needs to extend their warranty to address this issue.
It is a very dangerous problem with this vehicle that Bmwna is well aware of, but insists that it is "normal behavior" for my car/transmission. I brought the car into the dealer, and they were able to reproduce it, but they were told by BMW that this was "normal behavior. " the problem occurs when you slow down- like for a turn, but do not come to a complete stop. The dct transmission seems to have trouble figuring out what gear to select because when you step on the gas to accelerate, there is a very significant delay in the onset of power- up to 2-3 seconds. By this time, the driver is usually really digging into the throttle. The transmission finally picks a gear, which results in the car suddenly lurching forward, sometimes invoking the anti-skip control. The danger in this behavior occurs when making a turn into on-coming traffic after slowing down to around 10-15 mph. After the turn, the car is positioned in the traffic lane, but you have no power to accelerate into the flow of traffic. The oncoming cars are now closing in on your car at a fast rate, and you're basically stuck. This situation is most pronounced in the "auto" mode of the dct transmission, but also occurs to a lesser degree while in the manual mode when you select second gear in preparation for the turn. It is also very repeatable in both modes. These problems started occurring after a previous recall on this transmission where the engine would stall under hard braking or not shift under hard braking. The recall fixed that problem, but introduced this problem, which occurs almost every day whereas the previous problem only occurred during a specific situation. Thank you for looking into this dangerous matter.

The thermostat was failing to cool the vehicle under extreme heat conditions (over 100 degree days), took vehicle in to check the thermostat, but it was only a 90 degree day when they looked at the car, and were "unable to reproduce problem", so they returned the vehicle. About 6 months later, I took vehicle in to check the thermostat when the vehicle was unable to warm up under extreme cold conditions (under 30 degree mornings). Again, "unable to reproduce problem" because when the mechanics got to work in the morning, the temperatures were over 40 degrees. Other than extreme conditions, the thermostat seemed to work fine. But the following year, on a cold morning, not only did the vehicle fail to warm up, but the "check engine" light came on. By the time I was able to make an appointment and bring the car in, the light had gone out, and again, the service dept. Was unable to determine what made the "check engine" light come on. They said it must be an "intermitent problem". Yes, it was!! and the light came on another time, but I was out of town, so that by the time I got back, again it had gone out. The problem finally got bad enough for the light to come on again, and this time I drove the vehicle directly to the dealership w/o turning it off, so they could determine the problem. They finally confirmed there was indeed a problem with the thermostat, like I had told them all along, and they replaced the thermostat. When I got home and checked the internet, I found many complaints about this same problem with my engine in this model BMW. And BMW has not made a recall to to repair the item. This is a known and frequently recurring problem that BMW should be made to pay for &/or reimburse customers for expenses they incurred in fixing the problem, just like the fuel pump and battery problems for this same model vehicle that were fixed under recalls!!.
