Cadillac CTS owners have reported 3 problems related to gas recirculation valve (egr valve) (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Cadillac CTS based on all problems reported for the CTS.
Vehicle displays service rear axle service stabilitrak park assist temporarily unavailable automatic seatbelt tightening unavailable. 4 separate and unique occurrences. Some have also included reduced engine power. Typically the messages come on and reduced power occurs after expressway driving, followed by stop and go city driving or traffic. Also ambient temps are over 80 degrees with each occurrence. Lastly engine bay is extremely hot after the service messages are displayed. Engine temperature gauge does not indicate overheating (displays under the halfway point of the gauge). I have 2 separate video documentations that can be uploaded to youtube. 1st occurrence resulted in cylinder head replacement under warranty. The next 3 occurrences have all happened after the warranty service. Dealership has been unable to replicate the issue after the car cools down. Cadillac customer service said a second dealership review was required even though the car was brought to the dealer with the above service messages present. Attached documents display first warranty service, and second record service messages being present. Similar TSB issued for the ats-v lf4 engine for service rear axle or rear axle off, also the lt4 engine has a TSB for engine overheating and going into reduced power mode when the charge air cooling system is not refilled properly via vac-n-fill method. This vehicle has a similar liquid to air, charge air cooling system, requiring the same type of fill method. Full disclosure I am a general motors employee.

TSB 05-06-01-007a this has happened to my cadi on at least three occasions. First time, Cadillac dealer charged to replace thermostat. Didn't work. Next time, repair shop replaced oil gasket. Didn't work. This time I found the below description on line and will ask my repair shop to fix. If this is recurring to Cts owners, there really should be a recall. It is also a fire hazard. Irritating. My research found the below and it is right on target. . . . . It rarely happens because it is rarely below 10 degrees in my neck of the woods. . . . The car involved was a 2003 Cadillac Cts. Started vehicle in approximately 7 degree weather. After starting vehicle and running for approximately 15 minutes notice severe power loss. Within next couple of minutes black smoke with extreme burning smell flooded vehicle interior compartment also smoke starts to come from under hood of vehicle. Pulled into safe location found huge oil leak on left side of engine around valve cover. Could have possibly started a fire due to highly combustible oil being blown on engine but luckily did not catch on fire. Check on-line found TSB 05-06-01-007a stating gm knows this is a problem. "when operating in extremely cold weatherconditions, some 2003-2004 vehicles with 3. 2l v6 engine may leak engine oil from the cam/valve seals, especially from the left side just below the oil fill hole in the cam/valve cover. " this is quite a bit more than a leak since approximately a quart of oil was blown on the engine in only a couple minutes. If the engine would have been hotter there could easily have been a fire. Since this is a know issue with a known cause shouldn't this be taken care of by gm or at least the safety of the drivers and passengers should be considered. It could have been much worse if the vehicle would have caught fire.

2003 Cadillac Cts with 45852 miles - oil leaked from the engine cam/ valve cover seals due to extreme cold weather operations. I was merging onto a major highway and had just removed my foot from the brake to the accelerate when thick black smoke began pouring through the heating system into the car. Visibility was obstructed and breathing was impaired. Within seconds, I was forced to evacuate the car. Smoke began rolling out from beneath the hood. I opened the hood and saw sparking and small flash fires along the left side of the car near the tire. I was in a rural area in 20 degree weather and was forced to slowly limp the car to a safer area to get help and contact towing service. As of December 20th, my car has not been repaired and I am receiving conflicting information between Cadillac and the dealership. General motors document id # 1644918 states that they were aware of this problem on April 7, 2005 and also states that to prevent recurrence an after market part must be installed. However, there has not been a recall and general motors/Cadillac are refusing to assist me in either handling the issue as a warranty or repairing the car which is still awaiting parts and service at the dealership. This is a serious consumer safety issue as it only occurs during extreme cold and could pose serious health concerns due to exposure as well as traffic incidents due to visibility impairment from the smoke.
