37 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 04/12/2025

My husband and I were flat towing our vehicle on April 12, 2025. We had been traveling about 120 miles when the breaks on truck suddenly locked up, causing us to drag the vehicle for several feet before someone flagged us down and alerted us about what was happening. Our motor home is a 45' class a, with a 525 horse power engine. If this happens while towing, we may not know it was happening until something catastrophic happened. If it happened while driving we could be seriously injured.

38 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 04/11/2025

We purchased a used 2024 chevy Colorado wt with a little over 4,500 miles on April 9th. A couple of days later before starting the vehicle the brake pedal would sink all the way down to the floor. This happened twice. So I made a service appointment with the chevy dealer on April 14th. I told the service advisor that the brake pedal sank to the floor twice before starting the vehicle. He said they would take a look at it. When I went to pick up my vehicle the next day, the service advisor said the technician could not duplicate the problem. That same day, the brake pedal sank to the floor before starting the vehicle. So I made another service appointment the following week on April 23rd. I have videos to prove that the brake pedal would sink all the way to the floor before starting the vehicle. The service advisor told me that that technician duplicated the problem and they will order parts for it. The vehicle has been at the dealer since then. The service brake issue is a safety hazard that needs to be addressed.

39 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/21/2025

Driving on the highway speed limit 65-70 my truck started decelerating and breaks got hard and could not use break. Had to get home using emergency petal break and drive. My truck is only 2020 model for this type of problem. Want to see if I can get this fixed with the manufacture defect warranty. Took my truck to a chevy dealer and they are saying it can be a faulty vacuum pump.

The vacuum pump brake booster on my chevy Colorado went out with no warning first the camshaft went out then once the cam shaft was fixed the brakes didnt work luckily I made it home but the risk was there as the brakes became incredibly stiff and hard to press with me using all my weight to stop the truck I had a mechanic look at it and confirm the pump/booster as the readings show it’s getting power and that it has air but the pump is not working there was no warning no lights no nothing one day it was working the next it wasn’t same with the camshaft both things happened with zero warning.

41 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/20/2025

Abs check engine light came on after initially taking the vehicle in because of the brakes feeling weird and making noise. This similar issue has been experience by multiple users reported on a chevy Colorado group page on facebook to include 2 cases of individuals, one with a Colorado and another with a gnc canyon, both gm vehicles, that had their brakes fail while operating the vehicles. This was a concerning issue because, in my case, while I drove the vehicle, I was able to punch the brake pedal all the way to the floor while the vehicle was slowing down. The vehicle and part were inspected about 3 different times with the final time, and with video proof of an odd noise it was making, which then caused the dealership service department to actually check the brake pump which then they found to be faulty and needed replacing. This also took about a month and a half of wait time because the part was on backorder. I also spoke to Chevrolet directly where they did not seem to be aware nor cared at the fact I explained to them many owners experienced this same issue and did not acknowledge my concern for safety of the vehicle itself.

42 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/19/2025

The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact's husband stated while driving 20 mph, while attempting to turn into a parking lot and another vehicle was attempting to exit the same parking lot, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to respond. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact's husband depressed the brake pedal, the brake pedal seized, and the contact had to veer and downshift to first gear to avoid crashing into the other vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with vacuum pump failure and a fractured part from the vacuum camshaft. The vehicle was not fully repaired. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not repaired by the dealer because the vehicle was not under recall and parts were on back order, as per the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

43 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/15/2025

While driving in heavy and slow moving traffic at approximately 15 mph, the vehicle in front stopped. The forward collision and automatic emergency braking failed to activate. These safety features are not a replacement for active driving attention, but if they properly function and activate, they could have prevented the rear end collision that occurred.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 03/12/2025

Was driving approx 30 mph down road when alert/light flashing for crash detection. At the same the brakes slammed on causing the wheel to pull to the right and pulling the wheel from my hands. This sudden stop was abrupt enough to leave seatbelt mark on shoulder. There was no car in front or behind me in my lane of travel. There were no people on either side of the road walking. I have had the light go off a few times with the bell but no sudden braking until an update was run last night. Which according to the chevy recall was for ecm issue. Recall software update n242452130. I called the dealer , spoke the service manager mike and told him what happened. He tells me him and his wife bought a 2024 chevy equinox that did the exact same thing. Ok, how is that supposed to make me feel better? the braking was violent and if it happened in city traffic I have no question in my mind that would have been a [xxx] crash. Every single time there is an update push there is a problem. This has been the worst. After looking up the VIN does not show part of the original recall from your agency. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/26/2025

I purchaced a new 2024 chevy Colorado, the truck had 193 miles on the odometer when the brakes failed. When I stepped on the brake to put my truck into gear the pedal became spongy and brakes were severely diminished. I had to force the pedal to the floor to stop the truck at idle. I shut the truck off and restarted, it continued. I called the dealer, they sent a truck with trailer to take it back to the shop. They verified the condition and diagnosed the problem. I was told the ebc and master cylinder failed. The warning on the dash came on at the same time as I realized the brakes were not working.

46 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/22/2025

I have had this truck for about 3 weeks and the first day I brought it home the parking brake was engaged upon starting the truck along with the collision light. It finally came off and drove the truck. Took it to the dealer they checked it and said it was fine per their assessment. Couple days later it happened again took back to dealer as the collision and parking brake light and brakes were stuck again, they again ran their computer diagnostic system no issues. Drove it for about 3 days and now it occurred again today, collision light and parking brake engaged. After about 15 minutes of trying to disengage the parking brake I shut the truck off, then one last time I started it back up and the brake disengaged. I then drove it back to the dealer today.

49 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/31/2024

In December 2024, at under 50,000 miles, my 2021 Chevrolet Colorado suffered complete brake failure caused by vacuum pump failure. The vacuum pump failure led to irreparable internal engine damage, requiring complete engine replacement under warranty. Sudden, complete brake failure in traffic could have led to a serious accident causing injuries or death to myself and/or others. The component was inspected by the manufacturer and the service advisor at the dealership stated this was "kind of a known issue on Colorados". There were no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This vacuum pump failure is documented in gm technical service bulletin #21-na-268, which addresses vacuum pump failures on other gm vehicles. The identical failure mode in my 2021 Colorado demonstrates this is a systemic manufacturing defect, not an isolated incident.

50 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/19/2024

The stibilitrack in the truck went out just after 20 minutes of driving in 34 degree rainy weather at 65 mph. Found out that it was the passenger front bearing reluctor had chipped away, which is what the wheel speed sensor reads. Once one those go out, you lose stibilitrack and abs. I believe that this is a significant safety issue, and a poorly engineered/designed system. The rear system reads gear which is what should be in the front should have as well, not a "magnetic ring". This should be fixed so that noone gets injured or killed. It's also a waste of consumer money that you have to change out an entire wheel bearing hub assembly to fix the issue. Shame on the company. In the photos, notice that half the black ring (the reluctor) is missing.

51 Service Brakes problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/15/2024

Brakes make an intermittent grinding sound when cold but make no abnormal sounds when it is warm out. As far as the suspension goes. . . . . The truck sits higher on the passenger side than the driver side by almost 1 inch.

52 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/25/2024

On the afternoon of November 25, 2024, I had an interesting incident in a parking lot while slowly pulling into a parking spot. As I began braking, the brake pedal suddenly sank to the floor, forcing me to engage the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. After restarting the truck, the pedal firmness returned, but I noticed a peculiar sound, likely originating from the abs pump or solenoids. No warning lights illuminated on the dashboard, and no error codes were detected with my scanner. Additionally, I’ve observed that the front driver’s side wheel has significantly more brake dust compared to the passenger side. I brought this issue to the attention of the service advisor at boulevard GMC in signal hill, CA. Boulevard GMC informed me that brake parts are currently on a nationwide backorder, and there is no estimated time of arrival for when gm will supply dealerships with replacement parts.

53 Service Brakes problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/13/2024

In January of 2024, my husband was driving our 2023 Chevrolet Colorado. He was pulling onto our street driving approimately 5 mph. The vehicle suddenly stopped for no apparent reason. At this time, we did not file a complaint because it was a minor incident and no one was hurt. We brought the vehicle into the Chevrolet dealership for a safety recall for the front cameras . On [xxx] I was driving at 830am on a highway in the fast lane. No other vehicles were near me in my direction. No one was in front of me, besides me or behind me. I was driving approximately 57mph on a very clear and calm morning. My 2023 Chevrolet Colorado came to an abrupt stop for no reason at all. No lights flashed on my dashboard, the vehicle did not shake, warning me that I was shifting lanes (because I was not), nothing came on at all. I was given zero warning that the vehicle was abruptly stopping. I have severe whiplash and have been undergoing treatment for this trauma. No police report was filed because there was no damage done to the vehicle. I immediately called, reported and turned the vehicle into the local Chevrolet dealership here in reno, nevada. Gm's third party did a full investigative report, pulled the black box from the vehicle on December 15th, 2024 and just today, 70 days after the claim, gm informed us that they want to buy the vehicle back. Gm is claiming "what happened is consistent with the unwanted or undesired automatic emergency braking system failing. " this is the only communication we have had with gm thus far. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

54 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/13/2024

I was driving around 60mph on a highway with cruise control. Heavy traffic resulted in a major accident in front of me. I slammed my brakes, which prevented me from getting involved in the altercation. However, the vacuum pump on the Colorado shattered, and I was forced to drive on the highway with a limited ability to brake. I recall the brake pedal being flushed against the floor. Luckily, I am young and strong. However, if any elderly person were driving, they would not be able to brake the car due to the excessive force I had to apply. Furthermore, after pulling off the highway, my engine leaked oil. To empathize, after slamming my brakes, my brakes stopped working.

55 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 10/05/2024

Got notification of brake system failure on the dashboard and lost all braking ability. After the truck was shut off they worked again, perfectly fine. This scenario repeated itself and I lost breaks again. The truck has 200 miles on it and after looking online seems to be a common issue.

59 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/23/2024

We purchased a 2024 chevy Colorado mid June and drove it successfully, without incident until the end of August when the vehicle had complete brake failure. My husband was driving on I-95 in morning rush hour traffic when the dashboard lit up flashing several different indicators and a message saying "brake system failure" and "service esc" he had no brakes but could slow somewhat by applying as much pressure as he could to the brake pedal. He got the car to the dealer that same morning, grieco cheverolet delray. They worked on the car all day and we were called in the late afternoon to pick up. It was explained to us that gm advised their mechanics to restart the computer that controls that component and that the problem should be fixed. We were also told they were going to go ahead and order a replacement part in case "it happened again. " this comment did not leave us with much confidence. Then, as we were checking out, the employee noticed there was no explanation of what had been done to the vehicle. He called the mechanic and said he refused to hand over the keys until notes were added explaining what was done to address this serious issue. So notes were made, copies were handed over, and off we went. The truck drove perfectly until exactly one week later when the dash lit up again with all kinds of alerts and lights stating, "brake system failure" and "service esc. " that's right, no brakes again. We had the truck towed back to the dealer this time and we have been told they have ordered "the part" and it will probably be 3 weeks. That was one week ago and we have not heard anything yet. We have concerns over how nonchalant cheverolet and the dealer seem to be about a brand new car having complete brake failure twice and no real explanation as to why. Can you advise? thank you.

60 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 07/30/2024

I was driving to lunch and without warning, my brakes failed when I approached a 4-way stop. With abs, I was able to stop my vehicle safely in a parking lot. However, the when I turned the vehicle off, it would not start again. The vacuum pump seized and since it is driven by the exhaust camshaft, it destroyed the exhaust camshaft. It's been two weeks and I have been unable to acquire that part. I have been notified by gm parts distributors that the part is on a national supply delay with no firm eta from gm. It seems to be a very common failure. I have been out of a vehicle for over two weeks because of this failure. I also could have been in a terrible accident since the vacuum pump failed without warning. I have checked chevy forums and several others reported the same issue.

61 Service Brakes problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

The parking brake lever contacts a piece of the wiring harness/bundle during operation. Wear on the wiring lead to exposed wires in the bundle. 67 Service Brakes problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 05/22/2024

Component/system issue: intermittent loss of power assist to brakes after auto start-stop startup. Safety risk: unable to use brakes normally. Requires hard brake pedal pumping to get vehicle to stop. Reproduced by others: no. Doesn't happen every time. It has happened a total of three times (so far). Inspected by manufacturer: yes. The first time, the dealer found low voltage dtc set. Replaced battery. Second time, dealer found low voltage dtc (p 0562) set. They contacted gm tac who provided a file to patch the radio software. Third time, other (possibly related) electronics issues were also present which caused the vehicle to enter limp mode every time it's driven. They've replaced the ecu and the accelerator pedal, neither of which fixed that issue. They are now awaiting a wiring harness from gm to see if that is the root cause. Hopefully it also fixes the intermittent loss of power brakes after auto start-stop startup. Warning lamps/messages/other symptoms prior to failure: no symptoms prior to the failure. Upon startup caused by auto start-stop feature, the symptoms are as follows: all warning lamps illuminate and several messages display on the instrument cluster screen about loss of esc, abs, traction control, collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control, and others. One by one, the warning lights go out within 1 minute, except abs. Power assist for the brakes is not available while this light is illuminated. Within approx. 2 minutes, the abs light goes out and brakes function normally again.

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

The brake pedal suddenly became very stiff with no warning while driving at highway speeds. Braking was very difficult and required me to swerve into another lane to not impact a car and run a red light. I managed to stop afterwards. This was caused by the cam driven vacuum pump failing.
