My complaint along with thousands of other chevy Colorado and GMC canyon owners is the lack of a 4wd indicator reminder light in the gauge cluster. It seems that gm decided that just a tiny led light which is basically impossible to even see in daytime was enough. The only thing that comes up on the dash is a message that reads "shift in progress" but no other indicator to let you know that the transfer case has in fact made the shift or what drive mode it shifted into. The other problem is the location of this 4wd shift knob. It's located to the left, below and behind the steering wheel next to the headlight control knob as my attached photos will show. It is impossible to see while driving since it's view is blocked by the steering wheel and in order to actually see what drive mode the vehicle is in you must take your eyes off the road while driving, try to either look through the bottom of the steering wheel, around it or below it to see the position of this knob. I myself was driving on the beach in 4wd when I went fishing. When I left the beach my truck wasn't driving normally and I realized I never shifted back into 2wd. I literally had to take my eyes off the road to look at this knob to check to see what position it was in and I came very close to having an accident. Also driving on pavement in 4wd can cause serious damage to the driveline and also effecting the stability control system and abs. This is the first 4 wheel drive vehicle I've owned that lacked a 4wd indicator reminder light. Gm actually has an off-road 4wd information screen in the dic on some models but for some reason they didn't make this screen available on the Colorado. This feature should be standard on any of their 4wd vehicles or at the very least a 4wd reminder indicator light on the dash due to the unsafe location of the 4wd control knob. This is just an accident waiting to happen!.

Fuel pump weld crack, service 4wd message displayed, clunking in rear end all dismissed repeatedly from dealership I purchased my vehicle from. I bought this truck new off the lot which has been in the shop in excess of 10 times for multiple issues. The 4x4 started November 2017 I was told it was because we were having abnormally cold weather and it would come out of it. It has been in multiple times since then and they were unable to duplicate. Clunking in rear was dismissed as nothing, could not duplicate. I started smelling burning plastic, then when starting my vehicle in the morning the exhaust smell was so overpowering that it would gag us. The burning plastic smell was intermittent while driving and that was only after driving the truck between 2 to 20 or the full drive home and sometimes not at all. I had been nodding off, getting massive headaches and sick to my stomach while driving my truck, so was my daughter. No matter what they had my truck for, they could not duplicate the issue and I had a loaner for a week at a time. I took my vehicle to another dealership who just ended up sealing my pickup box, replacing fuel pump module, installed a body plug per a bulletin, per bulletin applied lubricant to both rear leaf springs and torqued leaf springs to specs. Transfer case control module had a bulletin for which my dealer stated they put dielectric lubricant. I was driving a vehicle with my child in it with carbon monoxide poisoning us based on the symptoms we were both suffering, exactly when would that have been duplicated, at autopsy???? I don't trust this truck, I don't want to drive this truck, I hate this truck now and I am stuck with 5 years of payments and something that tried to kill me. How is that for safety!!!! my opinion only!!!.
On sat oct 1st 2011 I was traveling east on the interstate at about 75 mph when all of a sudden it felt like I had blown a tire. The steering became rather sluggish and I pulled over to the side of the road. I got out checked all the tires and they all looked ok, so I got back in the vehicle. My grandson and his friend were in the back seat it was a crew cab. I noticed that the 4wd indicator on the dash was on but I had not switched it from 2wd it had done it on it's own . I tried to switch it back into 2wd but upon moving the vehicle it still felt like it was in 4wd. I decided to get the vehicle off the freeway so I could go slower and get the vehicle home, so I exited the fwy about a mile later and got on the old hwy where I could go 35 mph. My daughter was behind me in her car. About 5 miles down the road my daughter starts flashing her lights so I pulled over and she cam4e running up and told me my vehicle was on fire , I ordered my grandson and his friend out of the truck we left immediately , and backed off about 200 feet, you could see smoke coming from under the vehicle and fire dripping from just above the transfer case below the front passengers floorboard area. The fire spread and the vehicle became fully engulfed the tire melted the leather interior was completely vaporised needless to say it was a total loss. My theory is that the switching mechanism for the transfer case is defective it should not have switched on it's own at 75mph. I almost lost control of the vehicle when it did. That caused some kind of damage internally in the transfer case. When I drove the veihicle it heated up until it was red hot and caught the fuel filter on fire which eventually ruptered spread the fire and destroyed the vehicle.

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact smelled a strong burning odor and heard a loud rattling noise. The check engine light illuminated on the instrument control panel. The dealer stated that the bolts that hold the oil lubrication for the 4 wheel drive were too large, which caused the fluid to leak. As a result, the four wheel drive no longer works. The vehicle has not been repaired. The contact has copies of all written correspondence, outlining the cause of the failure. She also notified her state attorney's general office and the manufacturer. The failure and current mileages were 57,000.

We owned a 2005 Colorado that had problems with the lifters which had to be replaced. It also shifted into 4 wheel drive high, in most cases when shifting to drive after being parked or idling in traffic. Steering and brakes would lock up, and the only way to get it out of 4wd high was to drive in reverse. After a year long battle with our local chevy dealer, and 11 times in for service, we traded it in for a 2006 model. Two weeks after we got our new truck, the same thing with the 4-wheel drive happened while in line at the bank drive-up on a Saturday morning. I contacted the dealership as soon as I got home and was told to make an appointment to bring the truck in to be looked at. Upset, I told him that we had taken our last truck in countless times for this same problem and the problem could never be "duplicated". We did take it in and they replaced some computer part or chip but it has done it again since then. This could be extremely serious if we were driving at any rate of speed let alone on a highway. Chevy needs to address this issue. We need to make them address it.

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado. While attempting to make a left turn at 10 mph, the steering wheel and tires suddenly locked, which caused the vehicle to come to a stop. The contact noticed that the low range indicator light illuminated on the instrument panel. She then pushed the button to place the vehicle into regular range, which allowed the vehicle to accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the transfer case encoder motor was not functioning properly. The vehicle was serviced, but the failure still persists. There was no crash due to the failure. The current mileage was 35,500 and failure mileage was 13,000.

- while driving the 2005 Chevrolet Colorado at 40 mph the passenger, looking for the vent, must have accidentally pushed the 4 wheel drive button. The same day, while backing into driveway, the tires squeaked. The contact was unhappy with the design of the vehicle . He believes it is too easy to engage the 4 wheel drive function inadvertently. This vehicle has part time 4 wheel drive. Updated 2/22/2007 -.
During normal driving my truck will shift into 4wd-high. I cannot determine if it occurs at highway speeds or low speeds (<30 mph), I only notice it when I go to turn. The occurance is intermitten since I bought the truck new in September 2005. It has almost cause me to have a head-on collision with an oncoming car and a building because the turning radius is affected when it shifts into 4 wd. Since the truck has push butten control to change to 4 wd, for several months I thought I bumped or pushed the button by accident, but that is not the case. I have been to the dealer 4 times, the 4wd control head has been changed (fault indicated), transfer case control module has been changed (internal fault indicated), all electical wire harnesses to the transfer case module-control head were checked for shorts. Problem not identified or solved and gm service told dealer to quit trying different things since the problem could not be identified. The vehicial is still under new car warrantry. In another drive train issue that may or may not be related to the automatic shifting into 4wd is a complete rebuild of the automatic transmission at 4200 miles. The transmission had to be rebuilt because no new transmission was available in n. Dakota. I have had no other problems with this truck.
2005 Chevrolet Colorado 4 wd shifts into 4wd low all by itself.
