2 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 07/06/2025

Clunking sound coming from rear end upon normal acceleration. When I take my foot off of the brake pedal, and depress the gas pedal, a loud clunk appears to come from the differential. If I coast first and then depress the gas pedal, it is not as pronounced. When you slow down to make a corner, and resume speed exiting the corner it is also pronounced. It should be noted that I am a safe adult driver (safe driver module installed in truck) and have 35,800 miles. My truck has always been serviced by my Chevrolet dealership; I am an older gentlemen and never drive recklessly. I'd like to think the rear differential should not be making a clunking sound at this point in its history.

4 Power Train problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 06/23/2025

I own a 2021 Chevrolet Colorado lt extended cab 2wd. The rear differential has failed prematurely at 70000 miles. The failure caused loud whining/grinding noises, vibration, and unsafe driving conditions. After researching online, I found many other 2021 Colorado owners reporting the same issue with rear differential failure, often at relatively low mileage. This indicates a widespread defect in the differential assembly. There are existing gm technical service bulletins (20-na-034, 20-na-156) related to axle/differential noise and machining defects, but gm has not issued a recall or extended warranty coverage. Differential failure can lead to loss of power to the wheels or lockup while driving, which poses a serious safety risk. I request that NHTSA investigate this issue and require gm to issue a recall or special coverage adjustment for the affected vehicles.

5 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 06/17/2025

Power steering suddenly stops working while driving, making it difficult to steer. Fortunately when this happened today it was at low speeds and on a straight away. Warning light to check power steering went on followed by check stabilitrak system. I called the dealer and am waiting for a response. The vehicle has not been inspected by manufacturer, police, insurance rep, or other. No warning lamp occurred prior to the power steering failure.

6 Power Train problem of the 2025 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 05/14/2025

On [xxx] after only 400 miles on the odometer, I experienced complete transmission failure while on a highway and was nearly hit by the vehicle behind me, luckily that did not happen. On April 29th, a new replacement transmission was installed by the chevy dealer, and now on [xxx] I had experienced a severe burning smell from under the hood of the vehicle accompanied with a grinding sound, which lead to me to take it back to the dealer. On 05/15/25, the customer care manager informed me that the new transmission from the factory has metal debris inside the pan, and the vehicle would again require a complete "tear down". This is very unsafe for major powertrain components from the gm factory to keep failing, another failed transmission on a brand new truck like this is very unsafe especially because I drive on major highways to commute for work and transport my young children. This is unsafe for the public and my family, gm needs to be held accountable, they also refuse to refund me my money back on this vehicle, and are disregarding lemon laws in nys. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

7 Power Train problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 05/10/2025

Transmission component: m5t: transmission auto 8 spd, 8l45 available for inspection. The vehicle shakes badly and shudders during acceleration and causes a brief inability to accelerate, often at higher speeds and with a great deal of rumbling and vibration. No other warning lamps, messages, or symptoms. The problem first appeared about 2 months ago. I recognized it as a persistent problem, and I was no longer comfortable driving the vehicle and feared that it would shut down while driving. I took my vehicle for diagnostic and maintenance at a local service center who also noticed that the transfer case "is making an unusual squeaking noise when driving". I was then notified that this is a known problem with this vehicle make and model for 2019 and referred here to file a complaint. Having less than 60k miles on this vehicle, I was referred to the dealership for possible next steps.

10 Power Train problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 04/18/2025

Complete engine failure due to defective crankshaft malfunction, truck taken to certified repair shop and then dealer, deal not responding for 24 days. Engine failed traveling on the highway was fortunately able to pull over, stranded. Engine light came on and the engine failed completely 5-10 min after on a 2 hour return trip home. Certified repair shop informed me this is the exact same reason of the recall just that my vehicle wasn’t currently under the recall. Vehicle component has been recalled on other Chevrolet vehicles manufactured during the same time just not this one yet.

16 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/11/2025

At around the 105k mile range the truck would make a gear whine sound and shudder between gears at around the 50mph range, speeding up or slowing down a bit would fix the issue. By 110k miles the truck was making the gear whine sound at speeds over 10 miles an hour studdering at every gear change. I took it to a mechanic who said there were no TSB's for the truck and suggested doing a trans oil dump and filter replacement. The trans filter was replaced, and 7 quarts mobil1 lv atf blue label oil was put into the transmission. The studdering has reduced to just at the 50mph range but the gear whine sound has if anything gotten louder.

17 Power Train problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/09/2025

Drive ability issues, feels like going over cattle guard, shudders when accelerating around 40-60 mph. The vehicle shudder's abnormally. There are no warning lights illuminated. Took to local Chevrolet dealership where a service bulletin, TSB: 21-na-047 was discovered to address the issue. The dealer recommended a transmission fluid flush. Mileage on this vehicle was 67,631.

19 Power Train problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/13/2024

Complaint # 11630574 transmission shudder, took to dealership on 09/28/2023 had transmission flushed and changed fluid to new style transmission fluid, per gm under warranty. I was told that if it needed done again that I would have to pay to have it done and would cost approximately $400- $500. On 12/13/2024 the truck is shuddering again at 48,700 miles.

20 Power Train problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/12/2024

I purchased my 2019 chevy Colorado z71 new in Feb 2019 from a dealership. About two years ago I began having shifting issues from 1st to 2nd gear, it would shudder and seem almost stuck, this would only occur infrequently. Right after I hit 100,000 miles (about a year ago) I have had nothing but issues with the 8 speed transmission, my vehicle is unable to shift from 1st to 2nd without having the shudder occur, it feels like the whole truck is shaking and loses power at acceleration. I took it in for their recommended "service bulletin" which was something that I had to locate myself because gm has not once communicated about there being any kind of shudder issue and they performed a simple flush of the transmission, not the service bulletin recommendation of three flushes and a different fluid. My truck is now in the shop because I am unable to drive it due to this ongoing issue that gm fails to recognize and so far have spent $1,000 attempting to rectify this issue and being told that in order for them to actually perform the service bulletin, it will be another $225 to diagnose the problem, around $500-$700 to perform the service bulletin, and then if that "does not fix the problem", I will have to spend another $900 on a torque converter because that "could" be the issue, the dealership "doesn't know". Then the third fix would be to replace the transmission ($5500-$8500) this has been a known issue since manufacturing and gm is failing to provide adequate assistance to fix a known problem with their 8 speed transmissions. I no longer feel safe to operate my chevy Colorado in fear that it could cause serious injury to myself and others due to gm not being able to provide a safe fix to their ongoing issue.

21 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/01/2024

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado. The contact stated that while driving and coming to a complete stop, the vehicle jerked while shifting gear. Additionally, while driving at slow speeds, the transmission was slipping, and the vehicle hesitated while shifting into gear. No warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the torque converter and other unknown transmission parts had previously been replaced, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 142,000.

22 Power Train problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/01/2024

No warning lights are illuminated but have this consistent violent engine rattle/shuddering that is getting worse and worse. Also when looking under the hood the crank pulley wobbles/rattles when truck is idle. Was told it could be the harmonic balancer going out due to there being a gap between that and the crank. The truck only has 100,000 miles on it. I got it used at 88,000 miles and have barely had the truck for a year now, the steering wheel was intermittently difficult to maneuver and no warning lights illuminate, the truck shifts hard from 1st to second gear now and seriously hesitates to accelerate. This is extremely concerning and apparently an ongoing complaint for this vehicle and something should be done about it. Not only does it cause financial destress on the owners of the vehicles but also a safety hazard to the driver.

23 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 10/23/2024

In [xxx] I took my truck in for oil change, inspection and 3rd complaint of shaking, and shuddering, lurching at a stop, they told me my transmission was broken, they would have to order the part and their was no eta on when they would get it. I was told there were none in the tri-state area from another dealership. We are a one (1) car family and jim trenary chevy said they don’t give out loaners, therefore we had to rent a car at 370. 00 a week. Here it is January 15 and we are still renting a car. They finally got the part sometime last week, but we need help! we have spent over 5,000 in rental car fees and gm will not reimburse us until we return the rental car, even though we have paid cash every week, and we’re have had to borrow from my husbands future paychecks. We are broke. We have to pay the deductible of 500. 00 when it is finally fixed, plus, during the snow storm last week someone side swiped my rental car, and I have to give enterprise 1500. 00 when I turn in the car for my deductible from insurance. I read there is a 65 million$ law suit pending to gm for these faulty transmissions, yet they don’t feel responsible to pay our expenses for something that is their problem, not ours, but they have made it my problem, and I am shouldering all the financial burden of this, their faulty transmission. We need help, we are now broke and now can not afford to pay for the rental, or our repair deductible, or our car payment. We don’t make that kind of money. My husband is the only one that works full time. We need help, and no one wants to listen or seems to care. We are broke! thank you for listening. 25 Power Train problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Transmission issues — shudder and vibration; stuttering; vibration and slams into gear at low speeds when going into gear. Problem has been confirmed by a independent service center. 26 Power Train problem of the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 10/12/2024

My vehicle has only 70,000 miles on it. My transmission began to shimmy and is getting worse and worse and several technicians have told me the transmission will have to be replaced. The parts are not available anywhere in the country to rebuild the parts of the transmission that are defective. Secondly I was told I could replace the transmission but there are no transmissions available in the entire country to repair my vehicle with. After investigation on the internet this is a massive problem with this model vehicle and chevy has been well aware of it for years. A few months ago I had the same problem with them air conditioner compressor. There were no air conditioner compressors available anywhere in the country for my four and a half year old vehicle.

27 Power Train problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

28 Power Train problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 09/24/2024

The automatic 8-speed transmission completely deteriorated after 4 years/64,000 miles exactly after the power train warranty. No warning lights or signals identified me of the problem, only a noticeable shuddering when driving at highway speeds. This vehicle is currently at the dealership where they have confirmed I will need a new transmission to replace the faulty original manufacturer's transmission. My safety and others' safety is/was affected by a faulty piece of equipment that was destroyed with regular use. This could potentially lead to my vehicle being unable to shift up/down during traffic leading to an injury or worse.

29 Power Train problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/26/2024

On multiple occasions the warning to service power steering and stabilitrak have popped up during driving causing a loss of power steering. Once I was taking a curve and it jerked the truck toward the right but I luckily had a good grip on the steering wheel to keep it on the road. Other occasions it occurs upon starting the vehicle in the morning or after sitting parked for several hours. When this occurs, it is very difficult to keep control of the vehicle when turning is concerned. I have brought it up with service technicians at the dealership but they cannot diagnose unless it is in the state of warning lights on and loss of power steering. The issue usually goes away when vehicle is turned off and restarted, though not always. This issue continues at haphazard intervals so it makes driving tense and unsafe as there is no telling when it will pop up. It is also causing an issue to get fixed because it cannot be replicated to get diagnosed properly. I have not been able to get any codes read for the issue as I am not near a facility when it occurs.

30 Power Train problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/22/2024

My son was driving the vehicle when it lost power and he had to maneauver to the side of the road putting himself and others in danger. The truck was not able to drive forward, but could only drive in reverse. There were no warning lights or other indications that the vehicle had a problem. I had it towed to a mechanic who said chevy Colorados have problems with their transmissions and it would need to be replaced.

33 Power Train problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 07/12/2024

2024 Colorado tb purchased new on [xxx]. About 3 days later with 150 miles logged parked in my driveway I noticed oil spots and leaking. Drove to dealer and they kept it for around 3 days. Dealer contacted gm to supply data points and information. Gm had a bulletin placed for rear main oil seal and gasket failure they attributed to faulty parts from original plant inside u. S. Dealer received authorization and billed warranty pulled tranny (allegedly) and replaced rear main oil seal gaskets to stop leaks. Had truck back in 3 days with much pressure and calls noting it was a brand new truck. A few quirks and lights I'm monitoring not related to this noted issue stated. Gm was attempting to determine how many trucks these faulty gasket seals affected. Dealer was good about providing rental free and turned truck around quick. Extremely odd and quirky for brand new truck with 150 miles logged but I guess things happen it is what it is. I read all the other blogs and statements noted here so I wanted to include this one. 34 Power Train problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 06/29/2024

35 Power Train problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 06/07/2024

I bought a 2024 Colorado trail boss on may 31 and after a week the truck broke down I made a stop in a t intersection, once I had a clear path I started to accelerate and in that moment the truck jerked and at the same time I heard a loud noise under the back of the car. It felt like if I had been accelerating in neutral and suddenly changed gear to drive. After that, the car continue moving but after a few seconds the truck started to lose power and going super slow I tried to accelerate but the truck did not respond. I was able to pull off the road and stop in a parking lot. After that the truck no longer moved forward or backward regardless of what gear the car was in. . . The car didn't move again. He truck was towed to a Chevrolet dealer, and after two weeks, the service advisor informed me that the issue was with the transmission valve body. When this happen my family was with me in the truck, luckily, nothing serious happened and I was able to get off the road.
