1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 04/23/2020

I was in my garage, I opened the driver door sat down and secured the seat belt. I attempted to start the car by stepping on the brake pedal and pressing the start button but the engine did not turn over. I made a second and third attempt to start the engine to no avail. Then, I attempted to exit the car but the door would not open. Having not opened the windows, I was lost as how to get out of my car. I made one more attempt to start the engine but could not. In fact my instruments were dead. As I was without my cell phone, I sat perplexed at my predicament for several minutes. I operated the drive window down button but nothing happen. After a few minutes I tried the driver door window again and the window opened about inch. I repeated the process for 10 or so minutes until the driver side window was completely down. At this juncture, I was able to climb out of the driver's window to safety. I then reached into the car and was able to release the car's hood. I did not find any visible lose connection. The battery connections were corroded. I clean the post terminals and the cable clams. Having done so I attempted to enter the car but the doors would not open. I have purchased a new ac delco battery and all is well. My issues are 1. I had no indication prior to the event that my Corvette instruments gave me no indication of a battery failure or any alternator failures. 2. I had no passenger compartment access to the inside trunk release strap for drivers door. 3. I believe this is a safety issue even if it is a rare event. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/06/2017

While driving, the check charging system light come on, voltage on the gage went to 11. 5 volt. I change the alternator, after installing the new rebuild on the gage when up to 14. 5. I took it for a test drive. That only lasted 20 minutes. Within 2 Saturday, I have added 6 alternator to this car, they only last 20 minute after in stalling. Had the car check out. I was told that it was a bad alternator. I have never changed so many alternator in my life on one car. Taking it into a shop this weekend again and let them install there $800. 00 alternator and see what happen.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

Accelerated quickly to 35 mph and when I reached the end of the block I attempted to slow and make a right hand turn. At that time I got a warning to check the charging system and noticed I had no power steering. Managed to muscle the wheel to complete the turn (had it been my wife there is no way she would have been able to turn the wheel) and continue slowly down the street to my driveway where I again muscled the car into the driveway. Discovered that the motor was running but the serpentine belt was not moving. Thus no alternator, power steering etc. I had my independent mechanic check it out, discovered that the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer pulley on the crank shaft stripped and the crank shaft was turning and not moving the pulley. He called the dealership to inquire about the parts and they said they have plenty in stock. He thought this was surpising and that it was not a special order part. The service manager told him that they have had a number of similar incidents. Both my mechanic and I think this should qualify for some type of recall if it is happening with frequency. Obviously some kind of design flaw and/or material flaw, plus they didn't key the pulley so if the bolt strips you would not loose the power steering, etc. If this had happened at high speed or during the action of turning I believe a serious accident and/or injury could have occured. Cost of the parts and repair were $2300. 00.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/31/2014

A strong fume odor enter my house as if something was burning, my Corvette was in my garage it hasnt been used in more than 3days. . . . . I noticed it was coming from the bottom of the car, and in effect it was! contacted my mechanic and he advised me that it was the abs system caught on fire damaging the conector, module and regulator. He found a leak of brake fluid thru the modulator that cause the modules cables burned the connector. Had to change all the abs system since Chevrolet modified the previous abs system cause it was defective. However no recall has been made to this system. An aprox $3500. In repairs for a system that they know is defective. We were lucky nothing else in our garage/house got damage it was an scary situation.

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/16/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. Tthe contact stated that he waited for months to receive notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 14v251000 (electrical system and exterior lighting ). The contact stated that the parts were not available for several months. The dealer did not give a specific date when the parts would become available. The contact indicated that if a bump was hit in the road the low beams and high beams intermittently shorted. The contact mentioned that when the failure recurred, there was only the use of the running lights and the fog lights each time the failure recurred. The failure was progressing while the contact waited for the recall to be performed. The contact replaced the battery twice due to the intermittent failure. The contact heard a clicking noise coming from the keyless ignition and was not able to get the vehicle to start. The contact also replaced the two front tires and noticed that the tpms sneosr was illuminating intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop who diagnosed that there was an intermittent electrical short and the alternator may need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired yet and the contact was still waiting for the part to perform the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approxmate failure mileage was 129,469. Dyd.

8 Alternator/generator/regulator problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/12/2000

Per dealer, the actuator can go out at any time for unknown reasons. The owner's manual states that the vehicle must be towed and worked on only by the dealer. If the actuator goes out, the vehicle's steering column locks up as an ant-theft feature of the vehicle. Unfortunately, there is nothing the owner can do to prevent it. It costs an average of $450 to replace the actuator, which the dealer realizes can't be prevented. I've learned this is a common problem among Corvette (1997-2000) owners. Ref. In ea02-031.
