1 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2024

Pcv freeze-up with blown main rear seal losing all oil almost instantly while driving on the interstate at 70mph in 1 degree f weather. Spent 2. 5 hours on the side of the road in 1f weather in a vehicle with no heat (because the engine was blown) before a tow truck could arrive. No warnings ahead of time, and no notification from gm of this well-known problem. Although it is a design flaw of the engine, it would be easily preventable if gm would notify users of the potential for this catastrophic problem.

2 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

Vehicle shuttering/stuttering at stop light while idling. . . . Oil consumption issue. . . Consuming oil. . . High pressure fuel pump issue. Leading to low pressure fuel pump. Because of this. Leaking oil into engine. Need to replace all spark plugs. Have complete oil change because oil is all clunky/clogged. This has also caused a problem with the engine cam shaft cover. . . Pcv valve. And need to have water pump replaced. Total coming to about $2600. 00!!!!!!!!!!!! why I have not gotten a recall notice for this problem!.

3 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 11/03/2022

Yes, vehicle is available for inspection. Car dies while in motion, which causes increased risk for accidents to occur. Problem has been inspected by several independent service centers. Not inspected by manufacturer (chevy) as they will not book appointment for recall inspection as they say no recalls on vehicle. The check engine light came after some time of experiencing issues with car prior to the failure (car constantly dying). Concern: I took my vehicle into a mechanic shop to be serviced as it was having multiple issues, one being that my car was constantly dying while being driven. Diagnostics determined that my car has a plugged pcv system. They did not perform repairs as they found a recall for this issue that covers my specific year, make, and model. I called my local chevy dealership and they stated they could not find a recall and referred me to general motors. I contacted gm and they stated that my particular VIN was not apart of the recall. I was told that my car did not receive parts from the same location that was deemed to have been producing faulty parts. Given this reasoning, I asked for information on where my parts came from vs where the parts came from for the recall. They said they did not have access to that level of detail and that my option for escalation was to submit a safety concern to NHTSA. I find it highly suspicious that they state my car is not affected, but cannot provide proof as to how they came to that conclusion. I cannot be the first person to question why my car is not covered when it has the exact issue being recalled. This is our family car that transports our children daily and is now unsafe without proper repairs. Gm/chevy should be required to show proof of why my particular car is not covered and if not, they should be liable for the repairs. Here is the recall information that I have: document 4098165 document title: #14882: special coverage adjustment – plugged pcv orifice in intake manifold (Mar 4, 2015).

4 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2021

On February 9th 2021 at 5:00pm when it was 6 degrees with snow covered road outside, I was driving to a appointment about 10 miles away when my car started to act up. No warning lights or bells when off. I pulled into a quick trip and put some heat in thinking to was a gas line freeze up. I went a short 1. 5 miles to my appt and my car died. I was able to pull of to the side of the road and notice a lot of oil coming from my car. Again still no warning lights or bells went off. I towed it to hendrick Chevrolet where all the oil changes and all previous work have been done. The problem is a rear main seal that is blown due to the pcv value getting clogged with water and freezing causing high crack case pressure, blowing the rear seal. Gm has a service bulletin 14882 which covers this condition if the car is under 120000 miles/10 years from in service date. My car has 110501miles and the end service date 6/2012 and should be covered. However gm says my VIN # isn't part up the 14882 bulletin. My repair cost is $3200. 00 it seems the cars that are manufactured in mexico are part of this bulletin but the cars manufactured in canada are not. There are a lot of people out there facing and complaining about this. There is a lot of complaints on your website. This condition only will occurs during below freezing conditions potentially making it a very dangerous condition. In my case if I was driving on I-435 instead of holmes road my life would have been put in danger. This should be a very easy fix for gm it make to in sure the safety of drivers during freezing conditions and to prevent the very expensive cost for the consumer to bare. In my case I'm picking up my car, stowing it and finding a lawyer.

5 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2020

The engine experiences excessive oil consumption due to faulty piston rings, the pcv system sucking oil into the intake, and the oil spray jets forcing more oil past the faulty piston rings.

6 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2020

Recall needs to be initiated as per chevy special coverage bulletin 14882 in which the crankshaft rear oil seal and pcv manifold and associated parts are faulty rendering the vehicle to stall, leak excessive oil and dangerous to operate.

7 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2020

The pcv valve build up condensation while running, which subsequently froze. Upon starting the vesicle again, it built pressure to such an extent that it then blew out my rear main seal. It is exactly the scenario described in gm's special coverage adjustment #14882 or document id 4098165. Somehow my VIN is not covered under this known defect! this is ridiculous. The warning I had was a power steering light flash, then later a oil pressure light flash (all went out). This happened on the highway and on surface streets. This became worse when breaking.

8 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2020

At approximately, 92000 miles on my Equinox, while driving on a highway the pcv valve clogged/froze and exerted to much pressure to my engine causing the rear main seal to blow and spill all of the engine's oil all over the ground. This caused the engine to seize up and stall. Thankfully, I was able to pull off to the side of the road and avoid any accident. This exact issue is detailed under gm's service bulletin 14882 which lists a recall on this vehicle. However, my VIN# is not covered for some reason. This recall has to be extended to other VIN #'s. I currently have my car sitting at a chevy repair shop awaiting service totaling over $1800 to repair this issue which should have been covered by the recall. Gm has not handled this recall properly.

9 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2020

The block pcv valve is leaking and has over powering bad fumes are coming inside of my car and smoke detection and oil spots in my garage.

10 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2019

My 2012 chevy Equinox lt2 with a 2. 4l 4 cyl, has had the same condition diagnosed by a certified chevy dealership, clements Chevrolet in rochester, mn. Bulletin #14882, describes the excessive high oil consumption. This has happened on this vehicle, with the pistons and rings needing to be replaced, due to recall # 16118. The vehicle was brought in to dealership multiple times for regularly scheduled vehicle oil consumption tests. They found nothing wrong at those intervals. Now the pcv orifice was plugged by moisture in the intake manifold, causing the main seal to blow out. They are telling me it's not covered by their recall, despite gm having this issue on models from 2010-2018 year models of the chevy Equinox 2. 4l motor. This is an obvious design flaw, as outlined by the class action law suit currently being decided in the courts of florida, over this exact case.

11 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2019

Gm service bulletin 14882 while driving my 2012 chevy Equinox it died suddenly without warning on a city street. No warning lights, or nothing to indicate a problem. I was luckily able to get to a safe location where I noticed a trail of oil and oil severely leaking out from underneath my vehicle. I had it towed to a chevy dealership and the pcv valve is plugged and caused the rear main seal to leak. My VIN number is not covered in the gm service bulletin 14882 even though it is the exact same issue. This is a hazard for drivers as there was no warning at all of an issue and my vehicle died suddenly.

12 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2019

While driving to the gas station, and then to work, my vehicle got very sluggish while going down the highway but then resumed normal operation. I stopped to get gas and look over the exterior of the vehicle and found nothing to be out of the ordinary. I filled the gas tank and proceeded to drive the 1 mile to my place of employment. When pulling into the parking lot, I began hearing a knocking sound that I recognized immediately. I parked the vehicle immediately and looked around again. That is when I saw the oil on the ground. I examined the engine to look for the source of the oil leak. The oil filter, drain plug, and drain pan all were clean and dry. There was oil on the frame and the underside of the floorboard that can be seen from underneath the vehicle. After a few internet searches, I found a service bulletin (#14882) that told me everything that had happened. The temperature was well below freezing that day and it was snowing. I have a strong suspicion that the water that had made it's way into the pcv system had frozen, the pressure built up until it forced the rear main oil seal out resulting in all of the oil in my vehicle to exit the engine during my drive. The service bulletin indicated that Chevrolet and gm knew about the condition and yet did nothing to solve the issue.

13 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 02/28/2019

My wife was driving down the highway and she received a warning stating reduced engine power and service stabilitack. Wishing a few seconds of this her car died on the highway and would not start back up. Upon initial review the pcv line was blocked with ice as it was single digit temperature. When I checked the oil level there was nothing. The oil light never came on according to my wife. I put 2 quarts of oil in the car and it started back up, however it barely made it 4 miles back to the house before the oil was gone and the undercarriage of my vehicle was smoking from the oil coming out. This is exactly described in bulletin 14882. My car has just over 107k miles and appears meet all criteria of said bulk item. However, upon speaking with Chevrolet about this bulletin. My car is not covered.

14 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

While my 20 year old son was driving my 2012 chevy Equinox with 88567 miles to work along back country roads at 6am on a dark cold michigan morning he noticed the smell of burning oil while pulling into his employers parking lot. As it got lighter out thru the morning he noticed that the whole rear of the vehicle was covered in oil, with further investigation he discovered the whole under carriage was also covered in oil. Had him get vehicle towed to dealership where they diagnosed the issue as a rear main seal blown due to a clogged pcv valve, which matches a service bulletin (14882) in which dealership would not honor because of limited VIN's included per bulletin.

15 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/23/2019

Driving to work on city street after getting off interstate the engine locked up (all the oil was forced out through the rear main seal) in my 2012 Chevrolet Equinox with only 76,542 miles. Luckily I was not on the interstate at 60 mph - who knows what could have happened? general motors knows about this pcv and excessive oil consumption issue. They have extended "special coverage" for part of this problem. If letters were sent out I never received any. This defect is happening more frequently - many complaints available on the internet. Maybe this 4 cylinder engine needs to be investigated before someone gets injured. The gm dealer said there was no neglect on my part but I had to pay $5194. 15 to have my engine replaced.

16 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 12/09/2018

Frozen pcv valve caused pressure in the engine which caused main seal of engine to blow out and all the oil drains out of the engine . The vehicle was in motion. On city streets just driving in the winter. It will cost 2000. 00 for repairs.

17 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. After filling the vehicle with fuel, the contact noticed that the pcv valve heater was burning oil. The failure occurred twice. During the third failure, the cover detached and blew out the main seal. There were no warning indicators illuminated prior to the failure. The contact had the vehicle towed to defouw Chevrolet (320 sagamore pkwy s, lafayette, in 47905, (765) 449-2800). The vehicle was not included in any recalls. The failure mileage was 81,000.

18 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2018

Vehicle was being driven on the tollway on a snowy evening with the temperature around 5 degrees. Suddenly the vehicle started losing power and shaking and stalled in a lane of traffic and was unable to be restarted. This was a very unsafe situation as the visibility was poor due to the heavy snow and our vehicle was disabled and blocking a traffic lane. We had the vehicle towed to a repair shop which was able to get it started again but quickly turned it off as the engine sounded terrible. They checked the oil level to find no oil on the dipstick so they added oil and checked the level again and found metal shavings in the oil. The vehicle was restarted and sounded terrible and they found oil quickly leaking from the rear of the engine. Upon further inspection they found the rear main seal had failed causing all the oil to leak out from the engine. I now had a vehicle with 84,000 miles on it that needed a new engine. Upon researching this problem I quickly discovered this is a known issue with this engine that occurs in cold weather. The oil consumption issues as well as a pcv valve issue which clogs and caused the pressure to build up resulting in blowing out the rear main seal and is covered under TSB #14882 are known issues which lead to the failure of my engine. I was told by my local dealer that my VIN # did not qualify for the TSB #14882 and repairs would not be covered as my warranty had expired 9 months ago. The shop was able to locate a used engine with 25,000 miles on it and used that to replace my faulty engine. In total I spent $3,470 for the engine replacement and towing charges.

19 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2018

Recently my car caught on fire while my husband and I were driving. We own a 2012 Equinox 2. 4l. We didn't know until now that this engine is known for having extreme issues with a pcv valve and because of this design flaw the valve gets clogged up. It makes your engine build up pressure and then a crankcase seal blows (in our case is was the rear). This is something known to gm. There is a service bulletin out for this but gm won't cover it. We meet all the qualifications and they still won't cover it. There are so many people out there all over the internet posting about the same problem and gm won't help them either.

20 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2018

On a cold sub 0 degree day 1/5/2018 I was traveling on the expressway and without warning the vihical a 2012 Equinox suddenly started smoking out the exhaust profusely. After a tow into the dealer it was found that the pcv valve stuck closed and built up pressure and blow out the rear main seal. A problem that gm has known about . ( service bulletin # 14882) this has cost me almost $3,100 and could have been prevented if when the dealership when they took the vehicle in on traedin they fixed the known problem before they put the vehicle out on the used car lot and selling it to a unsuspecting customer like me who had no knowledge of to even look for this information. I bought this vehicle with 11200 miles on it and the service bulletin covered it to 12000 thousand mile. In closing it was very scary not knowing if I was going to make it off the expressway in the middle of rush hour and very shameful of matthew hargreaves dealership for withholding this information at the time of sale. If they didn't know about the problem the should have as it is there brand and they are suppose to be honest right!!.

21 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Plugged pcv orifice in intake manifold during cold weather, causing a blown rear crankshaft seal.

22 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 11/13/2017

Had my car in 3 times in the last 6 months for work done. Had the main rear oil seal replaced along with the catalytic converters first time, second time was after I picked up had to take it back in due to a seal leaking and letting exhaust into the cabin of the car where they had the car for over a week before they even called me back, then finally the third had to take it back in on Nov 13, 2017 due to another oil leak in the car coming from the front crankshaft seal. It took the dealer 10 days after I took it in before I heard anything on what the problem was. I have been without a car for the past 18 days and no offer of a loaner or anything. This is a little ridiculous in that these oil leaks seem to come from the same problem of a pluged pcv valve causing to much pressure build up in the engine and causes the seals to leak. All the work was done under warranty, except the work on the front crankshaft seal which they want to charge me for the work. I have also had a check engine light on that they said was fixed when the replaced the main rear oil seal, but obvious it did not and now they say it has to do with the evap system. Which is one thing I told them when I took the car in the first time I took it in.

23 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/26/2017

2012 chevy Equinox. Consumer writes in regards to reimbursement for vehicle repairs. The consumer stated the vehicle smelled hot, stalled, and made a banging noise. It began chugging and died. The pcv was cleaned and the main bearing oil seal was replaced.

24 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/11/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the pcv valve was faulty and heat would not blow properly from the air vents. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to dartmouth motors (320 john stark hwy, newport, nh 03773, (888) 223-2117, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 132,000.

25 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2017

; 2010-2014 Chevrolet Equinox; special coverage adjustment this special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. Dealers are to perform a crankcase pressure check, and if required, remove the intake manifold and clear the pcv orifice. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer. For vehicles covered by vehicle service contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after March 4, 2015, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to March 4, 2015, must be submitted to the service contract provider. This is from service bulletin 14882. As a result of the frozen pcv, my wife was nearly killed. The vehicle stopped instantaneously on the highway in the center lane after previously being at 74mph. Semi tractor trailers nearly ran her over. Highway patrol came to the rescue since her vehicle could not be completely removed from traffic. It came to rest partway on the shoulder and partway on the highway. When we had the vehicle towed to the local chevy dealership, they agreed that it matched identically to this service bulletin. Then, when they checked the VIN, gm said that our VIN was not included. This seems totally wrong. If needed you can obtain the highway patrol report from the missouri highway patrol. This happened on Sunday January 8, 2017. My wife is lisa newsom for reference. It occurred around 3pm central standard time without notice. The rear oil seal blew out and the motor ceased instantaneously without warning.

26 Crankcase (pcv) problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2015

Problem began at the beginning of the month when my vehicle stalled on the highway during rush hour traffic. . Luckily I was not hit or killed. The issue is with the engine and high oil consumption. I took it to the dealer and they ran the test and I now have to take the car back 2 more times to prove the pcv has to be replaced. Meanwhile I have to keep 2 quarts of oil in the car and check every 1000 miles to ensure oil lever is proper so car won't stop. I'm a single parent with a 2 year old and this "condition" with the vehicles is dangerous. Shame on gm for not placing a recall out and just doing the repair across the board. I am literally afraid to drive this car but stuck with it cause it is my only car and who can afford a new one. I have had 2 oil changes or top offs this month alone and a week ago I had to add a quart so the car wouldn't stall. This is ridiculous! chevy is about to lose a customer in me. Signed - scared single mom in houston, TX.
