2012 Chevrolet Equinox. Constituent writes regarding engine failure due to excessive oil consumption, the consumer was unaware of a recall due to purchasing the vehicle used. The repairs estimated to be nearly $8000. 00 which is the price of the vehicle's worth. The manufacturer was conatacted, but denied responsibility due to the class action suit being expired. However, they did offer to pay 1/3 of the cost, which left the consumer with the $8000. 00 remaining balance.
Yesterday was pretty scary my car cut off every 5 mins while driving I had no control. I've gotta everything I could think of fixed. . I was driving down gratiot & conner when it just stopped on me at the greenlight as I was turning. Now I am really scared to get back in it. I feel like gm knew something was wrong with these engine/motor and still won't do anything about it the oil consumption is crazy y'all won't be happy until someone get seriously hurt. My car jerks the whole drive really bad at stop lights after a while it just turns off I don't know what to do. I can't afford to keep fixing help me ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.
2012 chevorlet Equinox with 2. 4l engine with 123,525 miles has many safety concerns. As a result of this specific engine, there are issues that affect the quality of safety. This vehicle has excessive oil consumption, needs frequent oil refilling (at least 1quart/weekly), and emits the smell of fumes and lingers when vehicle is on. I am not able to have the car on stopped at a stoplight or simply while in park without the overwhelming smell of fumes. This vehicle has completely shut off on two occasions: first, it shut off halfway up a ramp leading off from the highway and second, during a red light at a busy intersection. There were vehicles driving behind at both times. I no longer feel safe driving this vehicle, nor do I think it is safe to have others in the car.
I have had multiple issues with the vehicle in question every since I drove it off the lot. The first signs of trouble started when the car would cut off in the middle of driving in busy traffic. Supposedly the dealer fixed the issue, not sure if that was true because it continued as time went on. Secondly I have had so many oil changes since the purchase of this vehicle and there is record of 3/2019,05/2019,07/2019,(johnny londoff Chevrolet up until 05/2020),05/2020,10/2020,11/2020,02/2021. . . And counting. The vehicle has a very high oil consumption and is bringing about more issues within the vehicle. Lastly but not least the sensors and other things are being damaged in the process. At this current time I am having "reduced energy" issues and I just received oil change and I'm being told I needed to add oil, but how when I just got a oil change. I have reached out to the dealer whom sold me the vehicle, recalls dept, etc and I'm not being provided with assistance. Please assist with this ongoing matter. I have records.
Car had 90,000 miles when bought and with in two weeks it burned 4 qrts of oil have only had the car a month now just did a oil change a week ago and it's down 1. 5 qrts and only drove 700 miles on this oil change.
The engine is burning oil and consuming oil with 4 quarts over 2,000 miles. The engine oil light is also not illuminating showing that the engine is low on oil. When this occurs it also causes the car to jump forward while stopped and the brake engaged.
Engine excessive oil consumption sounding like a diesel when running. Then while looking into this issue with the place we change our oil at, all of a sudden no check engine lights on at all and it stalls at an intersection to find out the timing chain broke and now the whole engine needs to be replaced.
Engine is burning excessive oil consumption. Per mechanic this has affected timing chain, valves, pistons for which there was a recall. I do not recall receiving a notice of this recall. Mechanic said there was no/very little oil when I took to him to check what was causing vehicle to run ruff and sound ruff. He said parts were caked with oil. Mechanic suggested to take to dealer for recall kit repair.
Oil consumption had to do repairs. Tear down and replacement of pistons and rings. Motor was knocking and siezing.
The timing chain snapped without any kind of warning causing extensive damage to the engine, I see recalls for this due to excessive oil consumption. I had the vehicle towed to Chevrolet and expected some type of assistance as there is only 68,000 miles on the vehicle. I purchased the vehicle at the ron westphal Chevrolet a salesman named robert ithier had sold us the vehicle introducing us to the former owner, we looked the vehicle over and had one of our mechanics check the vehicle and it seemed fine. Now that Chevrolet is not helping fix this problem we found out before we purchased the vehicle codes were cleared and an engine light was reset just before we purchased the vehicle. I feel cheated, robbed and conned from this dealership, I am still waiting for repairs to be performed.
Having to continues put oil in the vehicle have had it check out. They said no signs of a leak. Do not smell any oil burning. Seems like a lot of people are having these same problems.
Engine needed to be replaced due to excessive oil burning and subsequent metal fragments. Car was not included in notice of excessive oil consumption from chevy nor was it included in recent class action suit. Oil changes were performed as required. Owner was never informed of excessive oil consumption issue. Low oil warning light never came on. Owner was stalled on busy road while heading to repair shop to find out why the car was chugging. This stall became a safety issue for owner and other cars on the road. Cost of repair was $7793. 44. Chevrolet corporation refused to assist with cost.
Excessive oil consumption starting at between 30-40k miles. Sometime in about 2016 or 2017. Started receiving some information about some excessive oil problems but that there was still a pending classaction suit in progress and that I didn't need to do anything because my vehicle was involved. Took the vehicle to a dealer on 4/4/20 and was told that an extended "special coverage" warranty had expired on 9/20/2019. I explained that I have been adding up to 5 quarts of oil between oil changes at 3,500 miles. Was told to do an oil consumption test which was completed on September 2, 2020 to verify that 4. 5 qts of oil were added over 2,955 miles of operation. Gm now refuses to cover the repair because the "special coverage" timeframe that I was never notified about (120k miles or 9/20/2019, whichever is first) has apparently ended and the vehicle had less than 60,000 miles on it at the time the extended coverage ended. I've been receiving litigation information about a suit and claims for reimbursement for expenses into early 2020, but nothing about how to get the problem fixed if I have never previously filed any claims. I have not kept receipts of every time I added oil, I just check the oil periodically when refilling gas and add as necessary. I just want gm to honor the extended coverage and do the repair on the piston assembly. The original factory installed piston assembly has been updated with a newer part to apparently fix the oil consumption issue which tells me that there was a defect in the original factory installed parts and that this is not a problem based on improper care or lack of maintenance by the owner.
Burns through oil very quickly have to put in more than should often to keep up.
Burning oil fast. Just changed oil and have driven it less than 3,000 miles and is a quart low. Not the first time it's done this. Checked oil Saturday went out of town about 3 hours one way got back home and the oil was a quart low. No oil spots beneath the car noticed at this time.
Engine light came due to the oil consumption replace intake & exhaust camshaft actuator solenoid valves.
On the evening of Jan 27, 2020, we received a call from our son after the car broke down while he was driving, just about a mile from our house. He heard a pop and what sounded like the engine blew up. He immediately pulled over on the side of the road and turned off the car. After several minutes, he tried to turn it back on without success. The car was towed to elco Chevrolet ($120) the next morning. They called to let us know that a piston broke and went through the engine for a catastrophic event. The car would require a new engine with a estimated cost of $8,000. We were told that this had nothing to do with the previous fixes and that the dealership nor gm would cover this. On July 25, 2018 we took the car to bommarito gmac (located in ellisville, mo). Bommarito told us that we should watch the oil and bring it back every 1,000 miles for an oil consumption check if it continued to burn oil quickly. We took the car back 3 times more before they agreed to change the pistons. Bommarito replaced the pistons at gms cost, on 10/28/18. The car had 58,017 miles at this time. We went back for 3 more oil changes in the next year. On Nov 29, 2019 we took the car back to firestone because the engine light came on. They ran a diagnostic check and referred us to elco Chevrolet (located in ballwin, mo) to replace the catalytic converter. Elco changed the catalytic converter on 12/9/19 ($808. 51 and 70,883 miles). We contacted 7 mechanics (3 of them are other chevy/gm dealerships) in addition to the 2 chevy/gm dealers that fixed the pistons and the catalytic converter. We found out this was an ongoing issue with Equinox and that there was a class action lawsuit for this reason. All 7 said that the pistons and catalytic converter issues definitely had something to do with the engine blowing.
I purchased this vehicle about a year ago from original owner. It has burned oil since I owned it. I have 83,000 miles on the vehicle and the engine seized on me. The cost to repair is $6700. I have had oil changes every 2,000 miles since I bought it and take good care of my vehicles. I will never buy chevy again.
Burning oil. I got an oil change and within less than a month I had no oil in my car. Not use and driven a lot either.
Due to faulty piston rings. My car burns oil like crazy. They haven't even issued out a recall or even bought back these cars with the faulty engine. I could be on the highway and my engine could go out at any moment. I go through maybe a quart of oil per week. I'm a college student and can't afford to fix this issue.
Burning lots of oil and gm is not doing anything to help me.
The car was in motion when the reduced engine power sensor came on and shut down. It was towed to a local repair shop where it was determined that the timing chain broke due to lack of oil due to bent piston rings and the oil escaping. All of that was repaired and maybe 6 months later the check engine light was back on. We took it back to the shop and it was decided there was extensive damage done to the engine based on the previous oil consumption issue. The engine was then replaced as well as the ecm board due to oil being all over it completely ruining the sensors. We also have had to replace the evap system due lack of oxygen and the car constantly chocking out while in motion and while ideling. We filed our claim when the class action lawsuit came out and of course we're denied, just like the thousands of other people due to there being lack of proof that it was due to lack of oil. I was constantly checking my oil, getting it changed, adding the right oil when it was low and because I did not do the oil consumption test through gm we are out almost 10 thousand dollars on a car that still had issues due to the lack of oil. The first time it broke down I had a power train warranty on the vehicle and they did an investigation to make sure it was due to a lack of oil changes and build up of dirty oil, it was proved that the oil escaped through the bent piston rings and burnt off instead of going back into the engine. They did cover the timing chain but once the engine needed to be replaced we no longer had the warranty. I'm not sure why that investigation was not good enough for the settlement to go through but regardless these vehicles are so unsafe and money pits and are still being sold to innocent people who have no idea what they are getting themselves into. A recall absolutely should be made.
Gm notified us of a known oil consumption problem with the vehicle. Our vehicle was constantly losing oil. We completed the oil consumption tests over a period of two years before the service department would replace the piston and rings, which were replaced in June 2018. July 1st 2019, after 10,000 miles, the engine exploded and caught fire while driving the vehicle down the street. Fortunately, no one was serious harmed. The vehicle stopped in the middle of a 6 lane street in moderate traffic. The fire department was called and put the fire out. The vehicle could not be pushed out of traffic and was towed to the service department.
Excessive oil consumption while I am driving.
Vehicle stalled while driving on highway. Engine seized up while driving due to no oil. No dash indicators, lights, audible tones or other warnings were evident to indicate any problems with oil level, or oil pressure. Total engine failure resulted, leaving me stranded on the highway. General motors' "2. 4l ecotec" motors are known to exhibit severe excessive oil consumption, due to faulty piston rings. A class action lawsuit was settled in 2019, see 2. 4 liter oil consumption litigation c/o analytics consulting llc p. O. Box 2003 chanhassen, mn 55317-2003.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle hesitated and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the contact's residence where the oil filter was replaced and five quarts of oil were added. The contact also stated that the oil consumption on the vehicle was approximately a quart and a half high each week. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 156,284.
Since buying this vehicle, it has excessively burned through oil. Every time I go for an oil change which is always before the avg. 5000 miles I am told that the oil is very low. I have started adding 2-3 quarts of oil in between oil changes- this still shows up as low oil at the oil change. I never have an indicator light telling me my oil is low. The first couple of times I went in to change the oil after I bought it the car was riding really rough- shaking, loud, stalling. I didn't know what it was. Good thing I took it for an oil change right away. I was told it was almost completely dry! so I have been monitoring it since and adding oil. It seems like the problem is getting worse. At my last oil change I found out that this is a common problem with the Equinox. I called chevy dealership. Was given the run around. I persisted and was finally transferred to someone who knew of the issue. I was told I needed a oil consumption test and I would have to pay for it. They would check my oil every 1000 miles x3 to see if it qualified for free repair. After doing some searching online I found out that gm is being sued by several states because of this exact issue. Unfortunately I do not live in those states. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle now that I know this problem is getting worse and I have found out that some of the cars with the same issue, have had their engine seize while driving it on the highway.
My 2012 chevy Equinox motor has been severely damaged by an oil consumption problem. Its unsafe to drive. . . The engines have been blowing up. . . They oil system notification lights are faulty and has never came on. . . Therefore we have to check & put oil in our car before driving everyday!! this has caused serious problems in our motor scraps of metal, timing chain, piston n rings, stalling choking etc. . On every road we are. . Scarey while on highway n car stalls out!!! we have put 1000 $ into this car already gm knows of this problem and is giving me the run around even thou there are 1000's with same problem and class actions suits!! please help us be safe on the road and have gm stand by their product and fix them that's all I want is my car fixed. . . Nothing more I am within the miles and the time frame been putting my own money into this since April of 2019 thank you.
The engine has being replace and we are having trouble with this one check engine light was came on twice excessive oil consumption as well.
I purchased this car on 3/29/2019 and on 4/1/2019 found that the engine is suuseptable to excessive oil consumption causing engine to wear out and could stop running on the road making it a safety hazard. Also that the steering causes resistance to steering when changing lanes causing a highway safety hazard. Am I included in the class action lawsuit filed against general motors?.
Since April 2018 I have been experiencing issues with my vehicle when coming to a slow stop. Initially I thought the issue had to do with my brakes. I have taken the vehicle in to the brake shop three times since April 2018 and they had repeatedly told me the brakes are not the issue. I had my check engine light come on in December 2018 so I took my vehicle into the huber Chevrolet in omaha for an oil change even though it was not due yet for another 3 weeks. I was never told during this visit that my oil was low. On March 7th, 2019 the check engine light came on again so I took it in again the same day even though it wasn't due for an oil change for another 1000 miles. I was told my vehicle was 3 qts low on oil. I was also told of this "special policy". I was asked to bring my vehicle back in after 500 to 700 miles to have the oil consumption tested. I was told my vehicle's "policy" only lasted til may 2019 which is just a couple months away. I was also told that one issue the fast oil consumption caused was issues with the vehicle shaking/rattling when coming to a stop. These are the exact things my vehicle has been experiencing since April 2018. I believe that this huber Chevrolet gm dealer should have notified me during earlier visits about my oil consumption issue. After my oil change today I have learned from the internet of all the issues concerning oil consumption with gm vehicles made between 2010-2017. I am adamant that I never received any letter from gm about this oil consumption problem. I am upset that gm dealers like the one I go to were not obligated to tell owners of these vehicles about the oil consumption issue. I am now in the position of having just til may 2019 of proving my vehicle is experiencing this same oil consumption issue that gm and its dealers have been well aware of.
It has been burning oil since I have owned it. It also shakes real bad when applying the brakes. I have bought new rotors and pads and it still shakes no matter the speed I'm going.
Car stalls and cuts off, loss of power while driving, excessive oil consumption even after replacing oil, hard to start sometimes.
My 2012 Equinox has about 122,000 miles on it. I bout it in 2012, new. About 3 weeks ago, it frequently began to jerk and almost stall out when in drive and at a stop. I would have to put it in neutral most times to keep it from jerking so hard. It also ran very loudly. Then a few days ago the engine light came on, but then went off after I filled up my gas tank. I took my car to the dealership yesterday and they said my car was low on oil, so I told them that it was due for an oil change and they did. But the also said that I needed to replace my timing chain, which would be about $2000 dollars and they said that my car may be burning oil and if that's the case then I would need to replace timing chain and pistons and the price would be double. I picked my car up yesterday after the oil was changed and the care drove fine. Then, this afternoon while in the car line to pick up my son from school. My car completely stalled out while in drive and at a complete stop. It easily restarted but then stalled out again about 2 minutes late in the line. I was able to make it home after that but I am now concerned for my family's safety when driving a car that stalls out while in drive. I read up on my vehicle and found that there are numerous complaints from others with the same make, model, and year. Something definitely needs to be done about this as gm doesn't seem to care. Thank you.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced high oil consumption, which caused the contact to have to add extra oil in the vehicle weekly. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 73,000.
