78 problems related to engine burning oil have been reported for the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox based on all problems reported for the 2012 Equinox.
Recalled motor was recalled due to engine oil consumption gm failed to replace bearings and hone cylinders that showed signs of burning dealer agreed to replace pistons rings and pistons nothing else . Did not do any much to resolve motor problem should have repalced motor completly.
The engine is burning oil at excessive rates. Once the oil is low the oil light is not coming on. The engine will stall, buck, or shift into 2nd gear faster than normal causing the car to lurch. It is very dangerous when driving to have the car stall or when going from a stop to pressing the gas and have the car lurch forward. This has happened while in motion and caused me to loose control of the car briefly. The car has stalled when coming to a stop and caused cars to nearly rear end me. The car has also stalled when accelerating.
The right head light side goes on and off, the stereo turnes off while listening to it and the signal lights don't work when the radio turns off on its own also the rear view camera turns off at the same time the radio does. The front and rear wipers don't always work. The engine lights comes on and off and the tire pressure sensor comes on and off. Also engine oil consumption.
The vehicle burns oil and the gas pedal occasionally stops working while driving and the steering wheel locks. I was driving on a street downtown in a city and the gas pedal stopped working in the middle of the street and the steering wheel would not turn. I had to restart the car to get it to work again.
I contacted Chevrolet in November 2018 about excessive oil consumption. My car is usually 2. 5 quarts low by the time 3000 miles is driven from the last oil change & I am worried my engine will lock up. I do all routine maintenance and get regular oil changes and service. This model should not use that much oil between oil changes. Now, since dealing with these other issues, when I come to a stop, it idles from about 700 down to 500 and it idles so low, my lights flicker & it sounds like it is going to cut off. My vehicle idles correctly when in park. It only idles roughly when in drive or reverse while at a stop. I contacted Chevrolet again, via phone, and they tell me "unfortunately it's not part of the recall and repairs will be out-of-pocket" I am disappointed that Chevrolet wont stand behind their products enough to recall and repair them as they should be. This problem started at around 114,000 miles. While this was all going on, the windshield wiper motor and transmission had to be replaced, which was also a recall, but not on my vehicle. I am so disappointed that Chevrolet wont recall and repair my vehicle. This is definitely something that they should take care of. How many people complaining of the same issues before they do what they're supposed to so their customers are happy and their vehicles are in proper working and driving condition so they don't endanger others from faulty parts?! if my vehicle dies while driving down the interstate, that will cause problems for more than just me! I have emailed Chevrolet 2 other times and have received no response. I'm so disappointed. I expected them to manufacture better quality motors than what these have turned out to be. It's sad it takes so many people to complain to actually get something done.
My Equinox began "bucking" one evening on my way home from work. I have changed the oil regularly (every 5000 miles) and was unaware of any issues with this model having excessive oil consumption problems. I brought to my local mechanic- he informed me that there was actually oil in the tailpipe and that these vehicles were known for having oil consumption issues. I arranged to have the vehicle towed to a Chevrolet dealer- I did not want to drive it as it was a huge safety concern with the engine bucking and possibly stalling in traffic. The Chevrolet dealer had it for the whole week and eventually told me it had "jumped timing". Joe the service manager at central Chevrolet in west springfield, MA told me they would have to see if there was further damage - ie to the valves. So the next call I get is from the warranty administrator at the dealer- she tells me I need a new engine and that Chevrolet will cover 30% of the replacement - would I like to have it done? I ask her- well you tell me they will cover 30% but 30% of what? she said that my share would be $ 5100. This was not acceptable- a vehicle with 48,000 miles and the engine needs to be replaced. It sounds like Chevrolet knew of the issue with this engine as evident by the numerous complaints and class action online. Had they notified owners appropriately and had the appropriate warning systems in the vehicles then this would not have happened. This has the potential to be a huge safety concern as people use these vehicles to transport family members to school, work, etc. If these vehicles run this way and even stall in traffic then there is huge potential for serious injury and/or death. I have tried to speak with general motors directly, but they have not responded with acceptable remedy. Please help the owners of these vehicles get the appropriate help - and to help keep their families safe. Ty.
Oil consumption.
Excessive oil consumption causing timing chain.
High oil consumption wearing down the life of the engine. My timing chain guide broke due to the lack of oil in the vehicle. My chevy Equinox was not due for another oil change for another 2,000 miles. This is a safety issue as it also stalls out.
I have a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox with the excessive oil consumption defect cause by defective piston seals. It came on out of nowhere with only 78k miles on the car. We were driving 2 hours home, and half a mile after we exited the highway, while we were sitting in a drive-thru, our engine died entirely due to this defect. If it had happened a minute sooner, my car would have died on the highway, and my family would have been in a terrible accident and possible even killed. Gm is refusing to cover the cost of the engine replacement, despite the fact that they extended the warranty on my vehicle specifically because of the known defect in the piston seals. This is a major hazard to consumer safety, and gm is avoiding issuing a recall to save themselves money. The dealership confirmed my car had the defect which caused the engine failure, and gm still won't do anything about it.
2012 Equinox, driving and engine rumbled before losing power. Attempted to restart, and engine failed. Brought in for service at dealership (~96400 miles) and the timing chain was failed causing permanent damage to the valve. Full engine replacement necessary. If driving on highway or busy intersection, could have been a major safety concern. Very lucky to be able to pull aside safely. Gm refuses to do anything about the complaint even though there is known problems with this engine and this specific issue, their reasoning is that they cannot perform the oil consumption test. The lab service indicated that the oil was low.
While driving on the dan ryan expressway during rush hour traffic, engine continued dying out. Got off the expressway and took side streets home to a mechanic who showed no oil in engine. Oil life still read 40%. Dealerships know about an oil consumption issue with these 2. 4 engines and only told dealerships to repair after an oil consumption test is performed. Gm never issued a notice to consumers only dealerships. We brought the car in before the letter was sent to the dealerships and now that were out of the "special extended coverage" we need to rebuild the engine. There are countless cases of these engine issues online, and a class action lawsuit has been started. Customers need to be aware of the issues before someone gets hurt or even killed when their engine blows while driving. Gm will not issue a recall unless told by the government to do it. This affects 2010 thru 2015 chevy Equinox and GMC terrain vehicles.
In September of 2017 I purchased a used 2012 chevy Equinox with 52753 miles on. It appeared to be in excellent condition. At 54502 miles the change engine oil message displayed on the dash. According to the dealer sticker in the window it was not due until 57620. When I checked the oil it was bone dry. There was not a drop of oil on the dipstick. I had to put in almost 3 quarts. I called the local garage and was told that this is a common problem with certain model year GMC vehicles. " excessive oil consumption issues" is the term he used. I did some research and discovered that thousands of people have complained and continue to complain about the same issue. There is currently a class action lawsuit against gm for the 2010- 2017 chevy Equinox. A recall needs to be issued as gm clearly has no intention of doing the right thing and taking care of this on their own.
I have had my engine rebuilt from dealership I bought it from due to oil disappearing and found it coming out of my exhaust! sense the repair I had to go back to dealership several times and also do a oil consumption test. Now I have oil coming out of my exhaust still and and when I change my oil it smells like gasoline! been having this issue ever sense I have bought the car and I got my catalytic converters replaced and it still has same issues. Obviously sense I been reading up on these cars there should be some recall with the engine 2. 4 liter would make lots of owners happy!!!.
The car has only 82,000 miles and the timing chain is shot. This is a common problem in the Equinox caused by bad valve rings which gm admits to but won't fix rings without an oil consumption test of 3,000 miles. I've added 3 quarts of oil since the last oil change (only 2,000 miles ago). There is no oil leak. The dealer (atlantic Chevrolet, bayshore, NY) has had my car for 3 days but won't repair the timing chain without a go ahead from gm which they say will require 2 more days! they need to issue a recall and fix rings and timing chains without making customers jump through so many hoops.
Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while idling the vehicle would suddenly shut off. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer white bear lake Chevrolet(1801 county rd. Fe, white bear lake, mn) who diagnosed that parts of the engine were damaged due to an oil consumption failure. The the engine actuator, catalytic converter, engine pistons and timing chain were all replaced and the failure was remedied. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000. Jft.
I was on my lunch break at my work, parked in the parking lot with my vehicle on and running. All of a sudden, my vehicle shuts off and will not turn on. Come to find out it's something to do with my engine. The vehicle only has 105,654 miles on it and had oil. One problem we know so far is that this particular engine burned through oil like it was nothing. I haven't even owned the car for a year and this happened. I'm hoping that this isn't a wide spread issue.
My 2012 chevy Equinox completely shut off, without any warning, while I was driving. No check engine light, no oil warning, nothing. The vehicle just died, in the middle of the road and wouldn't restart. It has less than 50,000 miles on it. I heard a knocking/rattling from the engine in sept. , checked the oil & it was bone dry! according to letter 16118 from gm, I was to take my vehicle to a dealership if this happened. I did, and started the oil consumption test. Got oil tested 2 times, once it was fine, the next time it was low. The 3rd time I got it checked was when it was towed in from my experience listed above. I was a quart low. Now I have a blown-up engine and the dealership wants me to pay $750. 00 for them to take apart the engine to figure out the cause. I'm absolutely disgusted with this entire situation. Gm knows about this issue and it's a huge safety concern! I don't know how gm can sit back and let their faulty vehicles be driven on our roadways putting so many people in danger! I drive 40 miles daily to and from work in rush hour traffic. Can you imagine the damage that would have been done to myself and others if this happened during those times? myself or others could have been seriously injured or killed! is that what it's going to take to make gm recall these vehicles?! and gm just suggests an oil consumption test, that takes months and miles to diagnose?! all while letting people drive their drive unsafe vehicles?! gm needs to step up and make a recall for this. Stop putting so many people at risk for some very dangerous situations! the day I came in to the chevy dealership with this complaint, they should have taken my safety and others safety into consideration. They should have had instructions from gm to inspect my vehicle free of charge and they should have fixed it free of charge because it's obviously a manufacturing defect.
My truck consumes oil every week, depending on if I did highway driving or not. I took my truck in for a oil consumption test and they stated every thing was ok, but its not. I put oil in this truck at least once a week. I wanted to take this truck on the road but cant not due it using excessive oil. I feel that tim lally is playing games. They know the problem but wont fix it.
We received a "satisfaction" letter regarding the oil consumption and stability light on this vehicle. The engine burns oil constantly and the 2d cylinder misfires due to this. The car has gone into "limp" mode several times and when it does it idles extremely high and we have to take the water out of the reservoir and change the spark plug in order for the car to "reset". This is not a "satisfaction" issue; it's a safety issue and when I addressed this with chevy I was told because my car has over 150k on it that it does not qualify for the fix or reimbursement. If this was truly a satisfaction issue I would agree, however a car that routinely goes into "limp" mode, idles extremely rough and burns over a quart of oil every week qualifies as a safety issue to me. This past weekend I had my daughter and granddaughter in my car about 1 hour from the house when it happened again. If took almost 2 hours to get home and when my husband looked at the car he's not sure his "standard" fix will work this time and we're now faced with an unexpected purchase of either a new car or being required to spend several thousands of dollars for a new engine. This goes beyond any satisfaction issue that I'm aware of and having to drive less than 40 miles an hour to get home in bad weather with my daughter and granddaughter, who is 18 months old is safety, not satisfaction. I do have the letters from chevy and my response if you are interested in reviewing. Thank you.
Excessive oil consumption, stalling, reduced power engine light contatly coming on.
I was driving with my wife and dog in the car late at night in cold iciey conditions in wyoming. Car began to lose power dramatically, steering was tight, lights dimmed, also engine stalled after a bit a of a slide and safely pulling over. We could have wrecked in the middle of nowhere in the icey cold temperatures. Engine light was one. Traction control light was on. Dash reads 'service stabilitrak' and 'engine power reduced !'. I could not get the car to quit stalling. I wasn't safely able to drive it. So I then did a ecu reset. (disconnect ecu and battery). Sat for 20 minutes. Restarted and still same problem after it idled rough for 5 minutes roughly. So next I disconnected the ecu fuse number 42 in the engine fuse box. I then turned key in first position and had same readings. Next I reset the code with my obd scan tool. Repeated the fuse method again. . . Still same reading but without starting the motor once during this. . . . My guess is the ecu is volitil to this vehicle motor class. Service bulletin states it needs a reflash. Updates for engine oil consumption as well. Very interesting as we consume too much oil. I believe all motor issues in our vehicle we have now (worn piston rings etc) are due to a faulty ecu. The fact that the warning shows when reset and not connected because the fuse is removed proves to me the ecu is having software issue in rendering proper diagnostics as well as safe engine performance. This incident took place in August of 2017. Problem still persists in dry climates where we live in texas. Same issues. Same symptoms. New sensors, battery, spark plugs and oil change regularly. This vehicle is unsafe and will take lives if not recalled. Imagine driving on ice with your kids inside and then your steering goes out and the engine loses power and brakes. . . . Is that what it will take?.
Was told by my mechanic the vehicle was burning oil. Found out in may 2017 that chevy is aware of a defective piston ring problem that causes this. They have been aware since at least 2015. Waited 2 years to notify me by mail. When I went to a dealer to have problem fixed I was told vehicle has too many miles on it. It would not have had too many miles had I benn notified 2 years ago!.
Oil consumption test showed motor using oil before 1000 miles. I had purchased an additional warranty but it isn't worth the paper it's written on. I have looked over other complaints online about these cars and there are numerous complaints on this issue with this car. Have also had to replace gas cap twice on the car so the engine light would stay off.
This vehicle has known oil consumption issues. In April 2016 the vehicle was lurching and shaking. During service of the vehicle they stated the oil was low, which has been on ongoing issue. We were advised to bring it back in August for an oil consumption test. We took it in for the oil consumption test. Now in may 2017 we are experiencing the same issues. Interestingly enough the dealership now has no record of the oil issues, including the oil consumption test. The dealership rummaged through the glove compartment and stated the vehicle was only getting oil changes every 6000. In fact, not all to the oil change receipts go in the glove compartment. We believe gm is attempting to hide the issue. Ultimately the vehicle will lurch and cause personal injury or property damage.
I have a 2012 chevy Equinox that I have owned since Aug. 2015. The car uses excessive oil, two or more quarts between oil changes on my four cylinder engine. A web search found this to be a very common problem. Chevy came up with the idea that this was a normal condition, but any back yard mechanic knows different. After all the complaints chevy finally issued a technical service bulletin on excessive oil use. I called the dealership who said I needed an oil consumption test which of course is not reimbursed. I purchase insurance total lost vehicles and repair them. I have been driver this car for 2 year. Car has 60000 miles. Chevy still has car listed as salvage with warranty void in their computer. No dealership will touch it. I am on my 4th call to chevy and they do not respond. Car will go low on oil to the point the engine bangs with no low oil indication. TSB issue will not do repair.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle rattled and made a host of noises, which indicated that there was no oil in the vehicle. The contact stated that two quarts of oil were placed in the vehicle, but it prematurely dissipated before the intended mileage mark. The contact stated that oil was added to the vehicle three times in a short period of time. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that there was an oil consumption failure. The vehicle was not repaired, but the contact made an appointment with the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 91,000.
Excessive oil consumption leads to chugging, dying & blowing codes. You have to check the oil at every fill up or the actuators & the selenoid fail which then retards the timing & tilts the cam shaft. I was driving home when I felt it power down & almost stall out. There are hundreds of complaints via google on this. This is the 3rd time in 14 months that mine has been in the shop. They need to fix the problem not just bandaide it. It has cost me way to much money & this is a road hazard since you never now when it is just going to lose power.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the check oil engine warning indicator illuminated. The contacted assumed that the oil needed to be changed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed as excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 94,000.
My 2012 Equinox began burning excessive oil. I had to add oil between oil changes. The vehicle exhibited the exact same issues as under the gm customer satisfaction #12312a which initially only covered the 2010 to 2011 Equinox. This same issue is also covered under technical service bulletin #13-06-01-003h. Based on this issue, my vehicle was in motion on a city street started so sputter while driving and finally shut down while driving. I was not able to get a dealership appointment and took the vehicle to firestone complete auto care. They informed me that the low oil likely caused the timing chain to jump and recommend I should see the dealership for oil consumption issue as this was a well known issue with these vehicles. I was able to get my vehicle to the dealership. The vehicle has 85k miles and the warranty ran out 5 months ago. I was informed that the issue was the timing chain and it needed to be replaced for $1,600. 00. Similar issue to the 2010 and 2011 chevy Equinox which is being replaced. Was also told the oil consumption would have to be performed after the timing chain fix and would also be at my expense. There are significant issues for this vehicle and gm is not taking responsibility. The warranty was extended for the 2010 and 2011 vehicles as they should have but the issue is also affecting the 2012 and 2013 as gm has issued service bulletins for them but are not fixing a known issue. This issue is dangerous to customers driving as the car can completely shutdown while driving. This is a dangerous issue for vehicle owners and an expensive one for customers from which gm is avoiding taking responsibility.
I purchased this pre-owned Equinox September 30. In December I found out from my mechanic that there is an oil consumption problem. It's not leaking oil, it's using oil. He printed out documentation that shows 2012 Equinox vehicles have this oil consumption problem due to faulty piston and piston ring installation. I brought it to my local GMC/chevy dealer and he said there is nothing that GMC will do for me and that it would be $3,000 to fix. I asked for an oil consumption test but he didn't follow through to schedule it. The vehicle had a power train warranty that expired this last October. Because of that it won't be repaired at no cost to me. Because this is a known issue that this vehicle engine was put together incorrectly, there is no way that I should pay for the repair. Over time this will cause irreparable damage to the engine, leaving me with multiple expensive upkeep and the inability to sell. It just turned to 82,000 miles. My first american bought car after owning foreign cars for decades. Wanted to be patriotic. I won't have that misjudgment again. I felt stuck at first but then realized that this is not an acceptable conclusion. GMC needs to stand behind what they have built.
Numerous issues with engine since January 2017. Reported initial problem in January 2017. January 2017 had rear main oil seal go out. There is a service bulletin for this #14882. I had to pay 1500 to repair. Caused by excessive oil consumption but my vehicle is excluded from this service bulletin because of the VIN number. Same issue as other 2012 chevy Equinox users. April 2017 - crankshaft seal goes out - leaking oil again - $2200 to repair. Told by lafontaine dealership in dexter, mi that it was unrelated to rear main oil seal going out. May 2017 - recieve service bulletin in mail #16118 for excessive oil consumption. Had just gotten oil changed with April 2017 repairs so held on to this just in case. August/Sep 2017 - at light in town car starts to stall out. Pull over immediately at the autozone and there is no oil. All gone. Take to dealership. Initiate excessive oil consumption test. First 1000 miles a little low, told to come back again in 1000 miles. I filed a complaint (2nd) with chevy about this issue and request it be escalated to supervisor or another level. October 2017 - car fails excessive oil test (using too much oil!!) gets gaskets replaced. Band-aid fix. October/November - gm tells me they won't reimburse me for anything. Customer service was rude and wouldn't even escalate to the next supervisor. November 2017 - I contact vijay iyer who is in a leadership position for gm out of detroit global customer experience director searching for help from someone. He tries to help but forwards everything over to executive customer servie department. They are just as bad as the mid-level department. Refuse to reimburse. Complaints filed with NHTSA and ftc!! contact the ftc and file about this issue or it won't get looked at. Pleaseeeeee.
Massive oil consumption especially in cold weather I have used a quart in 356 miles oil light never comes on even with it being 2 1/2 quarts low running out of oil can cause the engine to seize loosing all power and possibly causing an accident.
My 2012 Chevrolet Equinox, equipped with a 2. 4l engine, is exhibiting excessive engine oil consumption less than 1,000 miles per quart of engine oil. I continue to take my car to the Chevrolet dealership because I constantly hear an audible rattle or knock from my engine. It sounds like I am driving a diesel truck. The engine oil pressure light never comes on to let me know that the oil is low as to not burn out my engine. The oil pressure light never comes on. The car slows down to an almost complete stop in the middle of the highway while the speed limit is 70 miles an hour. At this rate, I could be killed or someone else. The dealer is stating I can continue to add oil or replace the engine for 7,000. I have maintained this car since its purchase and only went to Chevrolet dealership, there is no way I should have to replace an engine. Why is there not a recall on this issue? this is a safety concern and gm should be fixing this problem and not allowing its consumers to continue to deal with this issue when they are acutely aware there is a problem. I had to go online and research this information myself. I was never notified that such an issue existed by gm or the gm dealership. Why has the NHTSA not forcing gm to issue a recall in this matter? when I look back at my receipts, I have been having problems since 2016 and was never notified of an issue with this SUV. I have been paying so much money for issues that could have been prevented.
My children and their friend were driving back to school for a forgotten item. They stopped for a red light and the car stalled out. My son (18), told car behind to go around (luckily, they did not get rear ended). He put car in park, turned car off, and restarted it, and was able to get to destination. Fast forward approx a week later, the car is hesitating, and engine light comes on. My son took it for an oil change to see if that was the problem. The attendant said that when checking the dip stick before starting, the dip stick was bone dry! that's weird. . . We have had no oil leaks on our driveway, to be alerted that there is a problem. Why would the car be burning up oil that there would be none in the resevoir? so now, I guess we will need to monitor it, but I see other people have documented similar issues. My son (18) uses this car a lot. It seems like this is an abnormal issue with the vehicle. I don't understand why gm hasn't looked into this already. I hope it does not take something bad to happen before it is looked into. It is scary enough to be at a red light and have your car stop working. Please, someone take notice. Consumers pay a lot of money to drive their vehicles. Don't turn a blind eye to a potential problem. What is more cost effective, looking into the problem and fixing it or lawsuits after the fact. Be proactive. . . . Please.
