We purchased a 2012 chevy Equinox in January 2020. We took it for the first oil change in may 2020 (mind you, during quarantine from March to may we rarely drove it) and for a knocking engine noise, only to discover the engine was burning oil. This is apparently a known issue with this year and model and the dealership did not mention any of this to us. We checked for recalls but this issue is not listed as a "recall". It is now September and we are having it serviced again for the same issue. We had the timing chain replaced in may. Again, the vehicle makes a rattling noise and is low on oil when we had the oil changed just four weeks ago. It is not draining oil, it is burning oil at an alarming rate.
During 2018 and earlier, my 2012 Equinox which was purchased brand new 07/25/2012 has been burning/using way more oil than normal. The oil check light and/or check engine light does not come on. There is a rattling noise from the engine, which my husband thinks it could be the pistons and/or valves. There is no leakage on the carport or seals. I have always taken my vehicle to be serviced at the burien Chevrolet dealership. I have mention numerous times about the oil situation and the servicing rep. Always said, just make sure to monitor it. I have a problem with always adding more than the normal amount of oil and not actually fixing the internal rattling noise (root cause). After researching this type of situation for my vehicle type, I found it falls exactly in line with excessive engine oil consumption situation. Same audible rattle or knock from the engine can be heard. I have never received any information regarding this and have a scheduled diagnostic test scheduled for tomorrow. I should demand the dealer to service perform an oil consumption test for free and if my vehicle does not pass, have the dealer fix the pistons and/or valves billed to gm. My ask iswould NHTSA have any documentation and/or links to assist in following up?.
Since I purchased the vehicle in September 2014 I have had three instances where the car has stalled while driving. Twice it was related to cam sensors and a check engine light came on. This most recent time on 1/5/2018 the car was idling funny and stalled out no lights on dash. I just got an oil change one week prior. As I was trying to make it to my mechanic I heard an awful noise from the engine I had never heard before. I just barely made it to the mechanic. It stalled at every red light on my way there. . . . But when I got there and they hooked up the computer without a check engine light on a message popped up on the dash that said low oil pressure. I had only one quart of oil in there and like I said I just had the oil changed one week prior. In the past I had taken it to valvoline in between oil changes for top offs because that ticking/rattling sound when the oil is low was happening. They recently told me the Equinox is notorious for high oil consumption and owners are hoping for a recall. I have consistently looked for leaks because that seems to be my luck with cars. I never saw one until the other day and it appears to be a rear seal as it leaks almost at the rate of an oil change drain, but I won't actually know for sure until they take the engine apart. I am beyond frustrated because of course my warranty on the vehicle was up about 3500 miles ago and this is clearly a very expensive repair that isn't at the fault of the driver but rather the manufacturer. Additionally, I'm driving a newborn and two other children around in a car that will randomly stall or potentially combust due to engine failure as a result of lack of oil with no warning from the computer system in the vehicle. This has happened in the vehicle multiple times in 3 years roughly every 25-30k miles.
Chevy Equinox 2012, but the truck a month ago, notice a rattle noise on the engine, after a month +1000 miles driving, need to add 2q of oil, today 7/17 has no oil. Take it to sierra Chevrolet on monrovia, the person on service department, mention that I need to pay $150 for diagnostic the problem, + need to pay 3 oil change to see if this truck has the issue mention on bulletin: 13-06-01-003f. Why I need to pay for something that is not my fault. Defect of manufacturing. Motion.
When stopped at a stop sign or red light sometimes the engine tries to cut out, and the car jerks like it is trying to stay cranked. I have a friend that has a gm terrain and hers does the same thing. When turning there is a knocking in the steering. The speakers have a rattling sound like they are busted, but it doesn't do it all of the time. I took my car to the dealer, but of course they couldn't find anything wrong with it, the car now has 23,000 and it still hasn't been fixed. (this has been going on since September of 2011 when I bought the car).
