1 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle lunged and then started losing motive power with the engine running. The contact attempted to pull off the road however, the vehicle then accelerated independently. The contact stopped the vehicle, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle lunged forward. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal was depressed however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stopped the vehicle and had the vehicle towed to the dealer. The local dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the exhaust manifold was cracked and that the oxygen sensors #1 and #2 needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

2 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

Exhaust manifold cracked. So many other complaints. Is there a service bulletin available for this issue?.

3 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2018

Excessive oil consumption recall for new pistons and rings received one month after purchase. Day after picking up my vehicle, my check engine light turned on. Dealership told me that the camshaft intake solenoid was throwing a code and needed to be replaced but it had nothing to do with where they working, I paid out of pocket. Next day, check engine light came back on however, this time the traction control light came on as well and the engine power reduced warning came on the display screen and I couldn't drive over 20 mph the whole way home (twenty miles) with my two small children with me mind you. Replaced the camshaft intake solenoid only to not fix the issue so we also replaced the camshaft position sensor to find that didn't help at all. Ended up having to have my vehicle towed back to dealership (40 miles) as it was undriveable. Dealership said that the fuel rail pressure sensor needed to be replaced as the vehicle was dumping fuel into the cylinders. Had the dealership fix the issue and I paid them for parts and lanor, all while dealership denying fault. Picked it up after being "fixed", yet again, next day check engine light cones on again! dealership looked at again and told me that the camshaft exhaust solenoid, replaced that and my check engine light popped on again days later but my vehicle also stalled out on me while pulling out of a parking lot and again while stopped in the middle of a two lane highway with kids in the car. I then reached out to gm personally and they were extremely rude and denied fault. One month later, had to replace my exhaust manifold as it was cracked and releasing exhaust fumes into the cab with me and my children getting headaches while driving. Replaced upstream O2 sensor. . Not even one week after this was fixed, Jan 2018 my check engine light is back on again with a p0420 code for the cat converter. . . .

4 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2017

My vehicle was burning excessive amounts of oil. I took it in because it was running poorly, they discovered it was 3 quarts low on oil, and then had me track my oil consumption (by checking the oil once a week for 2,000 miles). Chevrolet had a recall for this issue (only if your car was experiencing this) and luckily it was covered to be fixed. However, because of the excessive oil consumption, I have had other issues and problems with my car. All during the same time period, my manifold cracked and I need a new catalytic converter. I definitely think (and the service advisor agreed) that the reason that my emissions system is running inefficiently, is because my engine was burning so much oil. All of the oil soot and fumes run through the engine and emission system, therefore clogging up my catalytic converter. Seems to me, that the catalytic converter should be covered under the oil consumption recall. I can understand if it were on a case to case basis (just like the oil consumption recall is), but it should be replaced if your car is experiencing those issues. All stemming back to the oil consumption.

5 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2017

Car had an oil change and new tires put on at belle tire in grand blanc mi. Three days later my daughter (rachelle sly) was at a red light and the car just stopped. Being close to a midas muffler she managed to get it to restart and go there (less than 500 feet). They put the car up in the air and said there was oil all over the bottom of the car. We decided to have it towed back to belle tire since they changed the oil originally. They said it had to be towed to al serra grand blanc mi. By that time the car wouldn't even start. . Al serra originally said it was a bad rear seal. Everything escalated to needing a full new engine. There was a bulletin (no. 14882) on the 2012 Equinox ltz but when we put her VIN in it did not come up. She had approx 140,000 miles at the time of this incident but had a previous complaint when she was within the required mileage of 120,000 or 10 years per the bulletin no:14882. At that time it was documented of the very complaints. It is cold in mi at this time which is mentioned in the bulletin. At the time of her first complaint al serra changed the catalytic converter which seemed to help. She purchased the car from al serra in June 2015 and the nothing was sent to her or disclosed to her. Bulletin came out in March of 2015 (three months earlier/prior) she drives a long way to and fro work but does not hot rod this vehicle . She gets all maintenance/oil changes etc. It is dangerous that this condition was not brought to her attention, if you google the condition it is a well documented problem that gm should fix and or notify people of, now in addition to spending over $20,000. 00 0n this car it cost $5,444. 00 to get a new engine!.

6 Manifold/header/muffler/tail Pipe problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

Bought used and then started noticing oil disappearing. Took to dealer, oil consumption test done, dealer says normal use. No help from the dealer at all. Consumption got worse, went from 2 quarts to 4 quarts between oil changes. In the meantime had to replace catalytic converter and a cracked exhaust manifold and now have a check engine light indicating O2 sensor problem, gas mileage dropping too. After researching, these problems seem to be caused by the oil use issue. Engine probably needs new rings and pistons($2500 at the dealer) but other internal damage may be present so cost may be even more. I found on the internet that gm had extended warranty for this issue but only up to 7 yrs or 120k miles. So, I am out of luck and dealer did not mention this as this started while still under 120k miles. Consulted a honest mechanic friend and he says it would be cheaper to replace the engine. He quoted $1800 for engine and labor, turn key job, with a one year warranty on everything. I trust him. Only choice is to replace engine or get rid of the car.
