Chevrolet Equinox owners have reported 10 problems related to brake disc pads (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Equinox based on all problems reported for the Equinox.
Brake pedal started vibrating almost uncontrollably when attempting to stop so I had brake pads replaced. When I picked up the car the technician told me my pads were still good and hadn't needed changing but they changed anyway. The next shop resurfaced my rotors but the problem persisted. It stopped on it's own but every once in a while it will do it still.

It has been burning oil since I have owned it. It also shakes real bad when applying the brakes. I have bought new rotors and pads and it still shakes no matter the speed I'm going.

I purchased this vehicle I June 28th of 2018. I have had to take it into the shop at least three times with complaints of squeaking from brakes mirror alert problems trunk sticking and the suspension has gotten worse since I first started driving it I'm noticing it. Every time I complain they tell me nothing is wrong except for at the beginning of my lease it had to be taken in for repairs. I was told that the brakes squeaking is not a safety issue and it was recommend to change my brake pads and in the same conversation was told that my brakes were fine. I spoke to the manager at balise chevy because I felt like this veichele was a lemon. I asked if there was anything they could do because I did not have time to keep taking this brand new veichele because it was a lease so they did nothing. Balise chevy in warwick should have notes of complaints. I also took the vehicle to hurd auto mall in johnston. There was a slow leak in one of my tires and balise could not find the leak so I was told if it happens again they would submerge the tire and check that way. They sent me home the tire continued to leak air my last oil change was done at hurd automall in johnston where they did an oil change found the tire leak no problem and fixed it.

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle shook after short trips and the brakes malfunctioned. Also, the brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced. The dealer (burtness Chevrolet, 802 genesis dr, orfordville, WI 53576, (608) 352-3053) stated that the vehicle was not covered even after they promised to offer the contact an extended four year warranty after the vehicle was purchased. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 76,000.
While accelerating the vehicle isnt shifting in the proper way it should. There is a chain rattling kind of sound from the engine as it accelerates, closer to the driver side. While braking, the brakes pads are all new, it will sometimes make a grinding sound and have little to no brake resistance if you hit a bump. All in a straight motion.
Sounds like the brakes grinding, starts unsafe stopping distance and happens out of blue, I have to constantly keep trying to push the brakes so it can stop. At times brakes will also be hard as rock no warning and have no brakes at all, been happening off and on. Abs/tc lights on, I was told I needed new hub bearing assembly, rotors and brake pads, all was changed and still not fixed. I keep reading about a pig tail harness but don¿t know the correct part number or its location. Started around March/2016 and its ongoing, almost got hit yesterday because the truck wouldn't brake.
I bought this car 3/30/2015 from carmax west sahara 7244. Las vegas. They said they have a 100 checks they do on a car before they sell. This car has about 45,000 miles on it and was a rental. Because I did not know the maintenance on the car I took it to my mechanic to check it over and change fluids, check sparks plugs and hoses, wires, and brakes etc. The mechanic found that the brake rotors were cracked. I had to replace all four rotors and brake pads. 900 dollars plus. The mechanic told me they were original parts and must have been defective. Yes I saw the rotors and they were cracked.
Problem with abs system. When stopping at low speeds ( 5mph) the abs system engages every time. We have had all brake pads, shoes, rotors, and disc replaced. Still have the problem. Have seen a lot of the same issuses appearing on internet forumns. As this is a safety issue how many complaints do we need before a recall is issued. Will it take a death? since g. M. Has so many recalls now why not include this.
All problems arose when the brake from the driver's side would shake when braking. We had the shoes and tha pads changed and the problem seemed to be solved for about a year. Then the problem began again but this time the brakes would squeak when braking and then they began to tighten and the brake would lock itself and began to smoke because of the friction the pad and the brake disc were creating since the brake would remain locked. This was only on the drivers side. When this occurred the friction made the whole wheel rim get hot and began producing a burning smell from the brake pad. The caliber, shoes, pad and disc had to be replaced for both front brakes. The brakes continue to squeak when breaking. Now, the motor heats up to the red zone, the check engine light comes on even if their is anti-freeze in the engine. When accelerating the motor cools down, but if the speed is less than 35mph the motor heats up more. Based on other comments from drivers with the same make, model and year they noticed that the problem has come up to be the head gaskets. This problem has created many problems with the engine and is becoming a safety hazard when their is still a posibility that the breaks will lock up again and possibly spark fire if the problem is not fixed. We have not used our vehicle because of these issues we fear that not fixing the costly problem may damage other parts of the vehicle. We know we are not alone and that other drivers have the same problem with the chevy Equinox 2005.

At highway speeds, any attempt at braking resulted in rapid pounding. This was not the abs activating. The car was brought to the dealer (o'keefe Chevrolet, ipswich, MA) for inspection. According to the service manager, the inspection showed that the front disc brakes were seriously worn down and both the brake pads and the rotors needed to be replaced. The car had slightly less that 18,000 miles on it. It was out of the 36 month warranty due to the elapsed time. The dealer refused any warranty consideration for the car. My concern was that the brake pads wore out in a short period of mileage. The service manager at o'keefe stated that this was due to "lack of use". Needless to say, I found this to be unbelievable. I asked how the brakes could be worn down by lack of use. Do they deteriorate standing still in my driveway? I contacted Chevrolet customer service to further explore this failure. Chevrolet's only response was that the car was out of warranty and nothing would be done. My questions about the brakes failing at low mileage was ignored by the customer service representative as she "was not technically trained". My concern in the matter is that the brakes used for the 2005 Equinox were of substandard quality. This place both me and my family in a hazardous position using the car. At 18,000 miles, you don't expect a problem to be the brakes. Chevrolet has ignored my concerns.
