Brakes failed following a vacuum pump failure while driving at faster speeds on a busy city street (45mph). "reduced engine power" was displayed and when I applied the brakes, the pedal felt solid and did not depress. Using the neutral gear and parking brake I was able to stop the car. This could have been a fatal failure in a different scenario with a lesser driver.
9 months aga, complete brake failure while driving on the highway. Dash said service brake assist. Turner Chevrolet in crosby, TX replaced the vacuum pump making the brakes work. Now we had the same issue again while driving on the highway at highway speeds. In both cases, we instantly lost all braking, but were able to slow down by letting off the accelerator and had enough distance to slow down.

We were driving our Equinox and the brakes failed to work. The brake pedal would not depress. We hit the car in front of us on the freeway off ramp and that car hit the next car. Both drivers reported injuries. There was no way to slow down let alone stop. The air bag did not deploy either. I researched the issue and found a brake booster is the probable problem. Both our car service provider and on line blogs list this as an issue. Something about the vacuum and brake fluid causing too much pressure so the brake pedal could not be depressed. This happens in high heat and when the car is on a hill. After the car stops and cools down or is left on level ground, then the brakes start working again. This makes the issue harder to find according to our car repair shop. We had gm take a look at the issue and they said there was no overall defect in the part. They did not look at our specific part. The insurance company totaled the car. This is a big safety issue. We had so many problems with this car including having the engine rebuilt for the high oil usage issue. We are glad that we and our children will not be driving this death trap anymore.

The brakes failed to stop the car on a rocky off-road mountain public access road. The road consisted of a low grade incline, and the anti-lock brakes froze and caused the vehicle to skid and the brakes froze up and the vehicle was gaining momentum dangerously for about 30 seconds until the grade leveled. However, I was found myself looking for a place to run off the road to stop the car before it finally stopped. I was lucky there were no other vehicles coming toward me around the curves. I have driven rocky mountain roads many times before, and I assumed that this vehicle would be safe to drive, but it was not suitable to off-road driving. I want to warn others to not take this vehicle off road, even though it looks like and is assumed by buyers as a safe vehicle driving in rocky, off-road conditions.
