Electrical System Problems of Chevrolet Equinox - part 2

While driving my 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, the vehicle repeatedly displays diagnostic trouble code p2138 (throttle/pedal position sensor voltage correlation). The vehicle suddenly enters “reduced engine power” mode without warning and loses acceleration while driving. This occurs daily and multiple times per day, both on highways and local roads. When the issue happens, the vehicle will not properly accelerate and loses power unexpectedly. This creates a serious safety hazard, especially in highway traffic, as I am unable to maintain speed or accelerate to avoid other vehicles. I have had to maneuver carefully or move toward the shoulder to avoid potential collisions. The throttle body has already been replaced; however, the problem continues to occur. The defect has not been corrected and remains ongoing and reproducible. I am currently [xxx] pregnant and drive this vehicle daily for work and to transport my [xxx] child to school. The unexpected loss of power places both myself and my child at risk while operating the vehicle in active traffic. This defect presents a significant safety concern due to repeated and sudden loss of engine power while driving. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Got the Equinox brand new on March 2025. Few weeks later had to take it to service/dealer with backup camera problems and it had to be replaced. It started to have speakers issues due to a very loud humming sound while driving. Also window from drivers side runs slower than the rest of windows. The visibility through front glass is non existent when raining due to the angle. Transmition started slipping and started to have a check engine light pop up and had to take it to service again. . . And finally at the beggining of November had to take it to service due to a sudden battery drain. She wouldnt turn on for no reason. The defective module is on backorder with no estimated arrival date, leaving the vehicle unusable. Its been there for 2 months now. . . They provided a loaner. Everything has been confirmed by dealer. They said that had 3 pages of codes pop up to be fixed.

My vehicle was not able to use the onstar properly and after researching numerous complaints I guess a faulty or bad onstar module is a common issue among gm owner especially within the first 12 months of owning the vehicle. Why is this problem not being recalled or compensated to the hundreds of individuals paying out of pocket for this malfunction which is close to $1000? why is the module dying or breaking so easy and in such short period of time. This is hazardous to my family because my disabled child can make driving scary some days. Not knowing I have the emergency onstar button available, or knowing where I am in case of an emergency is a severe issue for me hence why I purchased a new vehicle and made purchasing onstar services a priority for my family. Also the wifi feature helps my child to communicate with me and tell me any issues since she is non verbal and needs her device. Also not being able to use the app to lock the vehicle in case I forgot is a safety concern to me because sometimes I need to know I locked the car or that I know where the car is at all times. This onstar working or module mishap needs to be fixed and stop unconvincing people’s lives and those they love. People who are forced to fix this issue of the onstar not even getting a signal or being able to call onstar is dangerous! this who feel protected by the services and willing to purchase a vehicle just because of this should not have to pay up to $1000 to fix this issue especially in the first year! I can’t believe the amount of people who affected by this companies faults and carelessness. A recall needs to be put in affect and the modules/wiring need to be reinforced and installed more properly.

The vehicle’s display screen intermittently goes black, rendering the rearview camera inoperative. This failure significantly impairs rear visibility and creates a safety hazard while reversing.

Infotainment center is not operable. Had a diagnostic test completed by certified dealership and it is found that the infotainment center and radio is not operable. Contacted general motors corporate office. $47 was offered to go towards the $950 to fix it it. They did not offer any reimbursement for the $204 paid out of pocket for diagnostics fee that I they advised me to get after filing complaint. Due to the malfunction of the infotainment center and radio other safety issues have stopped working. Such as the onstar safety feature, the phone in case of emergency, the turn signals and also the safety features on the rear and side view mirrors, car length warning, and back up camera. Was advised from the dealership that all of these functions have ceased working due to the failure of the infotainment center and the radio. Unable to hear any warnings. Made a complaint with ohio attorney general's office and general motors' response was only to provide me 5%, which is the $47 towards the dealership invoice. There reason was that due to the mileage they cannot assist further than that. Its not about entertainment of the radio. I feel this is a safety hazard on so many levels, and it is not caused by simple wear and tear or any fault of the driver. This is a safety issue that I want addressed. This should not be a financial burden that the consumer should carry by themselves.

The vehicle’s heating system operates intermittently or takes an excessive amount of time to produce heat, reducing cabin visibility and comfort in cold conditions and creating a potential safety concern.

One time (so far) the screen behind the steering wheel that shows the gear and speedometer did not turn on when we started the car. We were able to back the car out of the garage and park it in our driveway. This is a safety concern because we could have driven the car in that condition - without a working speedometer. We are worried that the screen will turn off while we are driving.

Some kind of malfunction with the sunroof caused the sunroof to open without me knowing. Only the glass part opened. The top part of the car on the inside right above the door was wet down toward the side near the brake pedal fuse box that was filled with water. Sunroof will not close. Was told we needed to replace motors.

The contact owns a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic sign, the accelerator pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the transmission automatically shifted to park(p). The vehicle was towed to a service station and the vehicle was refilled. The contact was able to start the vehicle, and the message "auto shut down" was displayed and a 5-minute countdown was started, and the vehicle turned off. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drove to the residence. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 13,000.

Rear spear tire compartment full of water. Sunroof drains leaking into rear fuse box. Fuel pump and fuel pump module failing when driving. Turbo locking up from oil seal failure.

Rear tailgate. Borrowed vehicle from a friend for a trip. When opening the tailgate with the external switch it opens all the way and immediately comes back down about 12 inches or so then it immediately goes back up and immediately comes all the way down. My wife was almost trapped between the bottom of the tailgate and the floor of the storage compartment. When I tried it, I tried to hold it up when it started down for the second time and it was impossible for me to stop the tailgate from closing. It substantially overpowered me. There is a probability that it could have broken her back or strangled her. Even more so if she was packing the car by herself. I exerted all my strength trying to stop the tailgate as I indicated before. I have not contacted anyone about this situation. The vehicle has a little over 84k miles and is in excellent condition. When I called my friend about the problem she said she was aware of it and is living with it because it would cost over $1,000. 00 to fix it. I know she bought it used from ferman Chevrolet in tampa a few years ago. I was hoping to get it fixed for her before returning the car to her.

The vehicle has experienced repeated failures of the integrated telematics system, including loss of gps location accuracy, loss of data connectivity, navigation malfunction, and intermittent failure of voice command and steering wheel controls. On one occasion, the vehicle experienced a complete display blackout while driving, during which both the infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster went entirely black. The condition has occurred repeatedly and persisted despite multiple repair attempts. The vehicle has been out of service for approximately 82 cumulative days for diagnosis and repair of these issues. An authorized Chevrolet dealership ultimately diagnosed a failure of the telematics control module, which was replaced under warranty. Following this repair, the same data connectivity failure recurred and was documented with photo and video evidence. The vehicle was returned to the dealership for further diagnosis. The failure is intermittent and may not be present during every inspection. The telematics system supports navigation, driver information displays, and emergency communication features, including transmission of vehicle location and system data. Loss of gps and connectivity may impair the vehicle’s ability to provide accurate location information during an emergency. The prior display blackout resulted in loss of driver information while the vehicle was in motion. The condition has been reported multiple times to authorized Chevrolet dealerships. Diagnostic procedures and programming were performed, and the telematics module replacement confirms a system-level failure. Recurrence after component replacement indicates the condition has not been permanently resolved. Prior symptoms included loss of gps signal, incorrect location, loss of connectivity, navigation failure, and intermittent driver assistance alerts.

Our onstar control module on our 2025 Equinox started having connectivity issues. It failed to access apps and showed our location 100 miles from where we actually were, and drains the battery. We could not access onstar to correct the issue. It continued to go off and on, until it completely failed. Researching this, hundreds of 2025 Equinox owners are experiencing the same issues. It is an extreme safety hazard as affected control modules would send emergency personnel to an incorrect location in the driver is incapacitated in an accident. The module is constantly on back order for weeks. This needs to be looked at.

The contact owns a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that after having a software update to the ecm following the notice of an unknown recall, on several occasions while in reverse, the vehicle failed to reverse as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle seemed like it would accelerate forward. The contact had to push the vehicle for the vehicle to reverse. The contact that while pressing the ignition button on several occasions, the vehicle failed to start. The contact continued to press the ignition button, and the vehicle eventually started. Additionally, when the vehicle was started, the "parking brake release" message was displayed even though the parking brake was not engaged. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 101,000.

When trying to disengage cruise control, with button on steering wheel, brakes locked up going 75mph on the interstate. Would not unlock until I physically pressed brake pedal. If I had not been able to control the car, we would have been sent head first into the concrete barrier wall. Also, when trying to start car or put in into gear, it tells me to "press brake" when the brake pedal is pressed as far as it can go. Radio will randomly cut off and screen goes blank. Trunk button on drivers door does not open trunk without pushing it minimum of 5 times. Sometimes it takes more.

My vehicle has been at the dealership for over a month for an issue with the hvac system. The technician and gm engineering support believe the problem is related to a faulty acuator, which requires the entire dash to be removed for repair. (see pictures) this is extremely concerning for a new vehicle with very low mileage. An hvac acuator failure in a brand new car should not occur, and the repair is invasive- involving disassembly of the major interior components. I am worried this will lead to creaks, rattles, or compromised fit and finish afterward, as well as potential damage to electronics, airbags, and trim panels. In addition, this problem appears to be widespread among other 2025 Equinox owners, based on multiple reports in owner forums describing identical hvac noise or clicking problems linked to acuators. Gm has not yet issued a recall or service bulletin addressing it. Given the scope of disassembly required and the frequency of similar reports, this should be reviewed as potential design or component defect affecting vehicle reliability and safety systems (defrosting performance and interior air management).

The vehicle had a fault in its gps and it also had no communication with emergency assistance. This also caused battery problems that generated on two occasions that the vehicle did not start.

Vehicle lost power / cel illuminated.

The vehicle has ongoing and worsening electronic and safety-related issues. The fuel range and fuel economy fluctuate abnormally and frequently, sometimes even while the vehicle is stopped. The infotainment screen has experienced intermittent black areas/partial blackout while driving, affecting system reliability. Recently, the automatic transmission began hesitating during the initial gears, behaving abnormally and requiring me to reduce speed for the vehicle to respond properly. This occurs consistently. These issues have been reported multiple times to the dealership and gm with no resolution, and communication has stopped. I am concerned the vehicle is unsafe to drive and could fail unexpectedly.

The vehicles electrical system failed or faulted while operating. Engine went into a slow mode while operating in traffic. After stopping vehicle would not restart. Very dangerous for an elderly person operating the vehicle.

The infotainment center failed completely and does not power on. Because of this failure, I cannot see the front, rear, or side cameras, and there are no audible warning sounds for parking, lane safety, or seat belt alerts. Essentially, none of the safety features connected to the infotainment system are functioning. This failure puts my safety and the safety of others at risk because I cannot see camera views when backing up or parking, and I receive no audio alerts or warnings for seat belts, obstacles, or safety features.

I experienced a brake failure this past weekend in my 2025 Chevrolet Equinox ev lt while descending a dirt/stone road. The moment we started descending, the abs system engaged and did not brake the car adequately. In my opinion, the abs system should not have engaged in this terrain. The abs, would not shut off for our entire descent, which lasted for about two full minutes. During this time, we could not stop the car and were accelerating out of control. We got going far faster than I was comfortable with, and my passenger & I thought we were going to end up crashing. After about a minute of inability to brake properly or stop, we ended up getting a flat tire. The flat tire, combined with the terrain flattening, eventually helped us come to a complete stop. After stopping, the car was also having software issues (infotainment system resetting), and the infotainment system was very hot to the touch, suggesting an electrical or software malfunction tied to the braking system. It was a very scary situation, but my passenger and I were not injured. This failure left me and my passenger completely out of control of the vehicle, with a high risk of collision, rollover, or serious injury. In my opinion, a braking system that does not stop the vehicle when the pedal is fully applied constitutes a critical safety defect. Chevrolet has been contacted, but the dealer refused to treat this as a warranty safety issue so far. The vehicle remains available for inspection.

The incident except for by my 2015 Chevrolet Equinox has major electrical faulty ends in and timing belt changes which causes the vehicle to stall on a consumer at any time for me I was driving on a major highway or five lanes going to work and the car decided to slow down and started shedding off thank god that I made it to the far right side on a media strip and was able get the car to safety on the knee issue but she did slow down and shut off identity media call the triple a for help and roadside assistance they came as soon as they could and then test the car to see if it was the battery or the alternator which I had put in two brand new batteries and two brand new alternators and still have both he test them all and said no he's been pulling cars off major highways that are Equinox and terrain class action lawsuit against general motors in Chevrolet due to faulty issues in the engine and they recently one cases from 2010 to 2014 although my car is a 2015 the same issue still arise my car has 85,000 miles on it when this happens and I kept up the oil change and the maintenance on the car I then in turn had the car towed to a Chevrolet dealer and turned it a diagnostic test on my car vehicle and this is what they said in my car has the same issue that is from the previous lawsuit of Equinox 2010 to 2014. Have the results are as is fun the Chevrolet GMC dealer the vehicle will not start, the problem and issues extend from the timing belt chain, valves, blown gasket, fuel pump,this is causing many major issues along with all the recalls with the 2010 and 2018 Chevrolet Equinox and terrain. The only thing that they recommend is that the car engine needs to replacement to make consumers feel safe in their vehicles. Although my car is a 2015 I only have 85,000 miles and I continue to do all the maintenance and I was told by another mechanic that it does not have nothing to do so much as the oil change they knew that there were faulty issues with timingbelt.

The onstar module installed originally from manufacturer was faulty, causing electrical issues. This ended up draining the battery unexpectedly. No warning that the battery was low. Only had . 03 volts left when tested at dealership. The onstar button was experiencing issues such as blinking and loss of connection. Onstar support was no help, and the car manufacturer ignored issues as my phones software problem, until new battery was drained and issues persisted while driving. Ultimately this left the onstar not working for weeks leading up to the drained battery which was unsafe in case of accident as well.

Now, it won’t even start, and the battery was only at 73%. I can’t help but imagine my car stopping in the middle of the road. I would have died. My high-voltage battery isn’t even being recognized by the system. This is a highly safety hazard. If this happens on the highway, I would have been killed. Something is wrong with a less than 3 month old car.

This complaint is to clarify and supplement a previous report. The issues began in August 2025, not September. Initially, the vehicle presented abnormal fuel range fluctuations, including while stationary, as well as intermittent “key missing” warnings while driving and display black spots. These issues were reported to dealerships and gm without resolution. Over time, the condition has progressively worsened, and additional symptoms have developed, including abnormal noises and, more recently, transmission hesitation during the initial gears, requiring me to reduce speed for the vehicle to respond properly. The escalation of these issues over time raises ongoing safety concerns.

Telematics module stopped working out of nowhere and drains my battery to my vehicle. Had to have the vehicle towed to nearby dealship. Huge safety hazard as it is essentially the brains to my computer. App doesn't work without it, battery doesn't work and can't even get inside vehicle with key fob. Please issue recall.

First the window on the driver side wouldn't go down. That was fixed at the dealer. Now the gps system is not working. I am taking it back to the dealer again on Saturday. Tell me why a $500 phone's gps system always works and a $40,000. 00 car can't keep its gps system working? I'm thinking this car is a lemon. I just took possession of it on 1-18-25. It is a 2025 Equinox ev. Also, in the sun, the dashboard reflects on the window and it appears as if one is looking through a screen. It is very distracting and dangerous.

First incident: on uncertain date between 10/10/2024 (vehicle purchase date) and 04/22/2024 (initial service date), on a Sunday, 6:30 a. M. , infotainment and dash display went blank/dark on sawyer county highway b. Recovery within 30 seconds. Dark conditions, operating at recommended speed of 55 mph. Fortunately no surrounding traffic at the time. Issue brought to attention of don johnson motors service department at initial oil/filter/tire rotation on 04/22/2025. Mileage at time was 3287. Second incident: 07/15/2025 at approximately 9:30 a. M. On sawyer county highway n, infotainment and dash display went blank/dark. Recovery within 15-20 seconds. Operating at recommended speed of 55 mph. Fortunately no surrounding traffic at the time. Mileage at time of incident just over 7200. Have not contacted above dealership, but will do so shortly. This defect renders the vehicle out of the driver's control similar to a pilot losing engine power on an aircraft. Checked online to locate possible sources for the problem. Determined this is a known issue.

I’ve had the 02 sensor, maf sensor and a system update and my check engine won’t clear I’ve been dealing with this for over 5 months now. A chevy dealership has had my vehicle and never informed me of warranty or recall issues. My check engine is throwing random code relating to the 02 sensor, lean code and multiple components having communication issues. Check engine will be lit and then clear on its own then return almost immediately.

My audio quit, no sound for warning indicator, no radio audio, or onstar audio. Can't here anyone speaking when using phone, though the receiving party can her me speak to them.

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the a/c had failed to work as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where a cold diagnosis was made. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the frame on the front passenger side near the radiator had been put together with bondo and was not welded. The bottom part of the radiator was fractured and not intact and the a/c lines were damaged, and the front bumper was damaged. The mechanic refused to repair the vehicle due to the liability and informed the contact to stop driving the vehicle.  the contact took the vehicle back to the private dealer where she purchased the vehicle and the company agreed to do the repairs; the repairs are pending. The contact stated that when she purchased the vehicle she was shown a carfax report where it stated that the vehicle had been in an accident prior to the purchase. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,100.  .

•initial incident: July 2, 2025 •recurring occurrences: August 8, 2025 vehicle issue description: several months ago, the vehicle’s check engine light came on. A diagnostic scan was performed at o’reilly auto parts, but no error codes were detected. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop for further inspection. The shop found no mechanical issues and confirmed the vehicle was operating normally at that time. On August 6, 2025, the “service brake assist” warning appeared briefly on the dashboard but turned off shortly afterward. The parking brake warning light also came on that same day, then went off. These warning lights reappeared intermittently on August 8, 2025. No repairs have been made as there are no active recalls related to these issues. However, it is noted that there are consumer complaints reporting similar problems. This raises concerns about potential intermittent or undetected safety system faults, particularly involving the brake assist system and parking brake functionality. Checked brakes again no issues determined per bridgestone and mavis.

Onstar telematics unit stopped working with no notification in the infotainment system. The led light remained green in color advising me that the onstar system was working. Hundreds of people reporting the same issue across multiple gm vehicles. My vehicle has been at the dealership for almost two weeks and there is no eta on when the replacement part will be received from gm. This is a known problem component that should have initiated a safety recall. Due to the non operation of the onstar system, we no longer have access to the emergency notification if involved a traffic collision. We also no longer have access to the stolen vehicle tracking system. Nhtsa needs to investigate this issue, especially since gm is taking their time with getting replacement parts to dealerships.

I am experiencing a recurring issue with my vehicle where the park assist system keeps activating unexpectedly, and the check engine light (cel) also comes on. I have taken the vehicle to o’reilly auto parts for a diagnostic scan, and they reported no repairable codes present. Additionally, I visited tires plus, and their assessment was that if the light goes off on its own, then no issue is present that requires repair. Despite the temporary disappearance of the warning lights, the issue keeps returning, which raises concern. The park assist activation is not being manually triggered and appears without warning, often accompanied by the cel. This inconsistent behavior suggests there may be an intermittent or underlying issue with the vehicle’s sensors, wiring, or onboard systems that may not register a permanent diagnostic code. At this time, no repairs have been performed due to both locations stating that no actionable codes or faults were detected. However, the issue continues to happen periodically, and I would like further inspection or documentation of the problem, especially if it worsens or begins affecting vehicle safety or drivability.
