Side/window Air Bag Problems of Chevrolet Equinox

I was hit by a Chevrolet avalanche on my driver side door and front/side of my vehicle. The speed limit was 60 and the roads were icy and snowy. I was driving approximately 35mph and the other vehicle must have been going at least 55-60mph. The police report stated the other vehicle was driving too fast for road conditions. My side airbag didn't deploy and I suffered a concussion and have additional injuries due to the impact. Due to the nature of the accident and location of the impact I feel my airbag should have deployed. So far the estimate on my vehicle damages is anywhere from 10-15k.

We are having the same problems as so many Equinox owners are with passenger side air bag seat sensor. This problem is a major safety issue. Why wait for more people to be injured or worse and demand gm address this issue once and for all.

I got into my car Friday at 12:30 shut the door started it and the side airbag hit me shoved me sideways I turn the car off because I could smell the powder and I was afraid another one would go off. My arm around the elbow area hurts and my arm feels burned from about my armpit to my wrist. Between my shoulder blades and my neck hurt and I've had a headache since. I depend on my car being on the ambulance and the deputy coroner for boise county I could be in my car during the day or in the middle of the night and I'm afraid now to drive it.

Side air bags deployed going down road for no reason.

Passenger side airbag panel has been detaching itself. Popping it back in but it continues to fall off on one end. Afraid it might go off at random when someone sitting in passenger seat.

Involved in a rear end collision. My vehicle rear ended another vehicle and caused front end damage to mine. Received email from instead indicating a critical problem with the air bags and their deployment. The air bags never went off upon impact but smoke came from the side airbags.

Vehicle was struck in the front and right side by another vehicle as driver was crossing a two-lane city highway. The seat belts were on,but none of the front or side airbags deployed. The driver suffered a mild concussion as a result of being thrown around and bruised leg. Passenger was thrown around,also, resulting in both being checked out at the er. The vehicle was declared a total loss by insurance company.

The passengers side airbag will not stay on when no matter who on it, doesn't not pop any codes or anything. Have taken it two different dealerships still nothings says it's working fine. Which it isn�t, not safe at all.

On December 27, 2015, we were driving on the freeway 465 in indianapolis; we were on the left lane, approx. 65 miles per hour when we heard a huge explosion. My husband was driving and was able to control DE car and drive to the right where we were able to stop the car. The smell of burning was pretty intense, we were nervous and shook up for what had happened so my husband steps outside to view the vehicle and the vehicle doesn't have a scratch nothing showing that we hit something, he looked at the road and everything was clear. We call our insurance for a towing truck and they told us to call 911 for a faster service. When I call 911 they told me the police was not able to get involved because it was not an accident. After 1 hour waiting for towing truck, my husband decides to turn the car back on, and it did. Nothing was wrong with the engine, tiers, nothing. We pull the side airbags up and hold them with the car windows and drove to the dealership. Gm is telling us they can't find why DE air bags deployed, but they told allstate that we must off hit something close to the front driver wheel, and we have already research all the issues, and it's telling us that the airbags can't be deployed for that reason. We were very lucky with some bruises in our arms and neck, but we would like to know if this has to do with any recalls or system malfunctioning.

My passenger side airbag is not working had replaced once under warrenty nver been in an accident light on again checked many owners experience same issue cost between 300 and 600 dollars for repair cannot let anyone ride in front seat cannot afford repair.

Large pickup truck with snow plow ran stop sign at intersection, snow plow blade hit left side/left front of car, at speed of about 45 mph. Impact forced car off the road, into a pile of frozen ice and snow. Damage was severe enough that left front door was almost sliced off the car with serious body damage to left front and left front corner. All doors were jammed shut. Neither front nor side airbags deployed. Seat belt on driver did not tighten up either. Damage also to seat frame and dashboard.

My 19 year old daughter was drving home from work at approximately 11 pm on Sunday, October 5, 2014 on a straight street going approximately 40 mph in our 2007 cheverolet Equinox when both the driver & passenger side air bags deployed for no apparent reason. It scared her half to death, and luckily she did not get in to an accident. I called our local cheverolet dealership to report the issue & request service. I was told that there were no recalls & that I should file with my insurance company. I contacted my insurance company & was told no collision, no claim. I then went back to the service manager & he proceeded to tell me that the car probably thought it was going to tip over--really? long story short, I have called gm product department & filed a claim with them, and the dealership has had my car for over a week, and they have not heard from gm. I was told by the product specialist that an inspector was going to check the car & let me know what the computer says of why the air bags deployed. I have never heard of such a thing, and they are saying it happens all the time especially in SUV's. I have owned an SUV since 2005 & have never experienced an issue with the air bags deploying without a collision. I would like to know if this has happened to any one else & how I can handle this malfunction of the air bags. I feel that this is an issue with faulty air bags, not my financial issue. And is this car still safe for us to drive? please help.

The passenger seat got wet and the passenger side air bag would not turn off. It took 3 days for the seat to dry out before the air bag would turn off when the seat was unoccupied. The sensor should be water proof if a child were to wet their pants as in this incident.

The front passenger seat caught fire sometime between 3 p. M. On 8/10/14 and 8 a. M. On 8/11/14 when the vehicle was unoccupied, parked, and locked. The fire burned a large hole in the seat. Charred debris from the burned seat was found on the front passenger side floor mat. The vehicle was taken to a Chevrolet dealer for diagnosis as soon as the burned seat was discovered. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a "seat fire caused by an internal heat source" and offered to replace the front passenger side air bag sensor and seat cushion.

I purchased a used Equinox and it now has the service air bag indication on the dash & even when occupied by a large adult the passenger side airbag will not turn on. It states off continuously. I did call Chevrolet as some have been recalled for the identical problem, however, was told that my VIN number did not match the recall only 437 cars matched that recall and that I was responsible for the repairs myself.

My passenger side airbag does not tell when somebody sitting there so if I have an accident the airbag will not go off I don't think the sensor is working it has been replaced once already. My key gets stuck in the ignition I have to wait for it to click to get it out of the ignition.

Took my 2007 Equinox to dealership where I but it in may of 2007 to tell them about passenger side airbag not working correctly when certain individuals luke myself were sitting in passenger seat and I was told nothing they could do that I just needed to carry a gallon of water on my lap because I was to small. Fyi I weigh 120. Also the key keeps getting stuck in the ignition I think this is very unsafe along with the airbag. Would like a response ASAP my Equinox only has 42000 miles .

I drove the 2011 Equinox to the gym parking lot, from unpaved to a paved parking lot. I drove slowly with the speed about 5-8 mph, while looking for a parking space . Suddenly, the air bag in front of me, and the other air bags deployed with a bad smell. My right arm and hand were injured and bleeding, and my index finger was hurting. The next day, I found more blueness in both arms, and they were swollen, and my index finger was still hurting. The police officer told me this was not a car accident, and he was not supposed to give a report. I contacted Chevrolet the same day, 04/02/13. A third party inspector did an inspection on 04/08/13 and sent the report to the company. The reason I bought this car was for its size that seemed more safe than a small car. I don't understand. 1. How and why the air bags deployed with no car accident? 2. Why all the side air bags deployed with only the driver in the car and no one in the back seat? 3. From my understanding, the air bags are supposed to protect people in a car accident, not injure the driver without a car accident. 4. In this situation, the air bag hurt the driver, would I be able to use this car to drive on a rough road or a country road? I was informed to call a number. I called the number twice and left messages. Voice message stated, I would be contacted by a case manager within 24 hours. But, more than 24 hours had passed, and no one contacted me. My car is still at the Chevrolet dealer. Please help me, and also help the company to make safe cars for consumers.

Been having off and on problems with driver side air bag coming on and off. It will appear for maybe a week then go off totally for months. I took it in to the dealer where I bought and they ran a test and said it would be over 400. 00 to fix. Not sure what to do as this is just once in awhile service airbag! has there been any other problems with this make and model. ? not sure what to do. Hate spending all this money if it is just a fluke. Thank you for your help on this matter.

We took car to dealer ( o'rielly chevy , 6160 east broadway , tucson , az. 85711, 520-571-2270 ) did not fix problem ! a dealer claims bags work fine as long as my wife doesn't use her cushion !!! 3. Last dealer visit was 03 / 16/ 12, to no avail. No resolution !!!! my wife has a bad back, 4 vertebra lower back out of alignment ! must use a donut cushion ! dealer tells us, that's the way it is !!! I don't believe that. We had to rent another vehicle while ours was in for paint !! we rented a chevy malibu, three days, my wife used her cushion. Yep, you got it the air bags worked fine all time ( was a 2011 ) my problem is this : people have disabilities, they in some cases have to use aides ! if the airbags work in another chevy, why do they not work in our Equinox ???? from a quality assurance standpoint, this is not right, in my view, sensors are not positioned properly ! thanks for your time,.

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving 60 mph, the contact stated that the side air bag deployed intermittently. The dealer replaced the air bag assembly. Passenger side airbag seat sensor does not work when someone that weighs 130lbs is sitting in the passenger seat. Gm will not acknowledge that there is a problem with the airbag sensor on this vehicle. The chevy dealership said that *I* would have to pay to have the problem fixed because it's out of warranty. This is the same exact problem that the 2007 Equinox's had, which were recalled. It would seem to me that gm should have a recall on this vehicle since it is obviously a factory defect and could cause serious injury or death to someone if I were to get into an accident. This problem clearly violates fmvss standard number 208!.

While driving a 2008 chevy Equinox, it was noticed passenger side airbag was not operating, it has operated when the vehicle was new then spontaneously quite, failure is intermittent in nature , the consequences could be serious injury or death of passenger. Passenger side has a presence detection module and may or may not detect someone who weighs around 112 lbs. This violates federal law safety standard number208, occupant crash protection, Chevrolet has refused to confirm that there is a problem, and yes the same problem that affects 2007 models and early production 2008 models.
