Expressway driving. Power steering failed. No previous indication. Result was a major increase in effort to steer. I felt it created an unsafe condition. I was able to exit the highway and there was no accident.

I have a 2007 chevy Impala. It is used as a police car for my local county. Since getting the car in may of 2007, the steering wheel has locked 4 times while turning a corner. The car has electric power steering vs. Hydraulic like most cars. The most recent incident, I nearly struck another vehicle due to not being able to steer. The wheel locks anywhere from 2-4 seconds, then it finally releases. I called the dealership, and they stated they have received several other complaints similar to this on some of chevy's other models with electric steering. I have an appointment this week to get the problem looked at. However I feel this is a very serious problem and safety issue due to the fact of not being able to steer, and apparently it is not an isolated incident.

Ever since I bought my car I have had problems with my whole power steering and suspension system. I have spent over $2000 dollars over the past two years fixing parts that relate to anything from the wheel bearing, rack & pinion, ball joints and now looks like my power steering is ready to go out. Basically everything major on the front has failed. My warranty wouldn't cover because they said it's normal wear and tear. I feel it's a defect because it seems like the same things keep failing over and over. I really depend on my car to get to work and feel this is a matter that needs to be looked at a little more closer and taken seriously because from what I see, a lot of 2000 chevy Impala owners have complained about the same thing. This leads me to believe that this is a problem that the dealers or the manufacturer should take care of and look a possible reimbursement for many customers that have had the same problems, thanks.
