The lights would flash on and off, the air conditioner failed intermittently, the heating unit was inoperable, and the doors would lock and unlock by themselves. In addition, the vehicle lost all power and would not start. The dealer attempted to make several repairs to correct the failures, but was unsuccessful. It was later discovered that the aftermarket alarm system was wired incorrectly and caused the electrical failures. The dealer refused to make repairs and advised the contact to call general motors to see if they would repair the vehicle. General motors allowed the dealer to make the repairs, but the necessary parts were unavailable. The vehicle is currently at the dealer. There were 82 miles on the vehicle at the time of purchase. The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Impala. The contact attempted to exit his vehicle, but was locked inside the passenger compartment. The radio displayed "locked" and he could not exit the vehicle through the doors nor the windows because the electrical system failed. The representative at the dealer stated that he owned the same year, make, and model vehicle and had experienced the same failures. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle with an electrical system defect and repaired it at the estimated cost of over $1,400. The failure persisted and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer. Electrical failure - signal lighjts work periodically and air bag light goes on and off.
Consumer states while driving on highway at approximately 70mph, the car's speed suddenly decreased and the electrical system failed resulting in loss of power functions. Problem occurs intermittenly. Car checked by dealer who is not able to determine cause.
Car was idling in "park" when incident occurred. Dealer's work order states "excessive current load from fuel pump burned wire terminal at ignition block. Repaired burned wire terminal and replaced fuel pump". Since fuel pump is located in gas tank, any electrical failure of this part could cause a major fire.
Electrical failure, steering rack and pinion failure, lower ball joint/lower control arm/lower ball joints/long shaft sleeve failure.
