After shopping, my wife started the car and the fuel gauge needle went far to the right well beyond the full mark. At that time, there was approximately 1/2 tank of gas. We noted the mileage from the odometer and have used that as a basis on when to fill the car. We checked with a garage and they showed us a notification that had come from Chevrolet that this happened frequently with 2005 chevy Impalas. They said it is probably the dashboard cluster or the sensor from the fuel tank. Either repair would cost over $500. 00. I checked online and noticed that chevy SUV's from that era were fixed for free if they had less than 120,000 miles. I also noted a large number of complaints from 2005 chevy Impala drivers about the lack of response from Chevrolet. If that is the case and their is no compensation for a mistake made by the manufacturer, then this will be the last chevy product I or my family will ever buy.
Speedometer getting stuck & not registering properly. Driver is not able to tell what speed the car is traveling at. This could result in traffic infractions for an otherwise very good driving record & could be a safety hazard. Chevrolet really needs to step up & fix this issue as research has shown this is a common problem with this make, model, & year. A family member also has the same car but the base model & his gas gauge suddenly stopped working about a year ago.
I was driving my car at 45mph and suddenly my speedometer and instrument panel went crazy. It said I was going 120mph. Furthermore, my temperature gauge was inaccurate causing my car to overheat. This caused the head gaskets to blow and other parts had to be replaced. I have spent over $1,900. 00 fixing this issue. I was told the instrument panel cluster is not working properly and needs to be replaced which is over $2,000. 00. Chevrolet knows about this problem yet chooses to sit on the sidelines as thousands of people are having the same issue. Action needs to be taken with Chevrolet to resolve these issues. Thank you.

2005 Chevrolet Impala. Consumer writes in regards to lack of recall on vehicle with bad sensor clusters. The consumer stated the speedometer was inoperative, due to a bad sensor cluster.
The speedometer is out of control. It will tell me I'm either going way faster than I am or it will tell me I'm going way slower than I am. It will reset itself if the car is off for twenty minutes or so but it will just happen again in a few days or hours. I don't feel safe driving in a car where I don't know what speed I'm going. Many others have had this same exact problem in their own 04 chevy Impalas. It's an ongoing problem that needs to be fixed.
I have been having issues with my speedometer sticking the past few months. My husband took my car in to our local chevy dealership and was told we need to replace the instrument control panel which would cost around $600. Not happy with the fact that we will have to shell out this kind of money for a faulty factory part, I contacted the Chevrolet customer complaint line. I was told by the complaint line that they could not do anything for us at this time. . Read more...
Speedometer does not display accurate miles per hour. While driving, the odometer went to about 60 mph, when I was going about 40 mph and I tried to decrease the speed by depressing the brake pedal but it remained at 60 mph. I came to a traffic light and stopped, then I noticed that the speed was at 10 mph while setting still. I asked another person to drive the car to see if the same type of thing was happening with the speed odometer, and it was. The vehicle was taken to the dealership. The mechanic said he reset the odometer and said if that did not work, a part will need to be replaced. That worked about two weeks, and the same thing started all over again. I am afraid to drive the vehicle because I can not tell how fast I am driving. Which poses a safety hazard.
While driving on the interstate to begin our vacation, the speedometer began showing increased speed while cruise control was set. We were going 65, but the speedometer eventually registered 120 mph. After cruise was turned off, it continued to read 120 mph, regardless of actual speed. We had to use our gps to monitor speed for the entire 1300 mile round trip! gm has recalled other models with the same problem. Why hasn't a recall been issued for the Impala?.
Instrument cluster does not work. Sometimes the gauges stick and I do not know how fast im going or how much gas is in the car.
Speedometer does not work most of the time. Car will shut down without warning going down road. The check engine light does not come on. After pulling over it will start back up. Have been placed on diagnostics machine and no codes are triggered. We have replaced fuel filter. Had a tune up done. Nothing is working and mechanics cant figure out what is wrong. Very dangerous. Has happened many times. Last time going down mountain on a curve with no where to pull over. Luckily no traffic at the time.
Was driving vehicle and the temp gauge went all the way to overheat, shortly after that the gas gauge started to work only intermittantly, and the speedometer has some issues with registering the proper speed.
The contact owns 2005 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the instrument panel was defective, none of the gauges were displaying the correct readings. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the instrument panel was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The instrument panel on my 2005 chevy Impala just stopped working. The gas, speedometer, rpm guages are all miss reading. When im parked the rpm is redlined, the speedometer reads 90 mph , and the gas gauge reads straight north above the full line. I'm stuck not knowingexactly how fast im going. The speedometer seems to go back and forth to reading correctly at times reading all the way south but never making it compleely around.
2004 Chevrolet Impala. Consumer writes in regards to problem with gauge.
The instrument panel on my 2005 chevy Impala works intermittently. This includes gas, speedometer, and temperature guages. The driver is left not knowing conditions of the vehicle. Seems to be worse in cold weather.
Vehicle speedometer is floating. Sometimes I am doing zero mph. Then sometimes I am doing 120mph. This is a safety issue and something needs to be done about it. I never know how fast I am traveling down the road.
Entire instrument panel stopped working on my 2004 chevy Impala : speedometer, gas gauge, and temperature gauge. Called chevy about recalls because 5 other friends having same problems. Was told no recalls. Front headlights and rear defrost stopped working just yesterday. Couldn't see anything. Had to park the car. Very, very dangerous. Someone is going to get hurt.

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Impala that has a huge amount of issues within the dash. My car shows that it is running hot when it is not. It also shows it has no gas when the tank is full. The newest issue is that my speedometer is now stuck on 80 when the car is parked and is well over the 120mph when I am driving on the highway. I have no idea how fast I am going. This is the worse of the three because I or someone could be injured by this. To have people on the road with unsafe vehicles and the manufacture not be held responsible is ridiculous to say the least. There are so many people having this issue and I am not sure why this has not. Been recalled. I hope it does not take someone being killed before someone does something!.
2004 Chevrolet Impala - speedometer gone haywire 1. First, the turn signal blinker failed. Blinker did not work, but turn signal stayed lit and indicated I as turning. 2. Next, the heat turned to air conditioner mode. I had to switch off the ac back to heat. 3. Last, on a 45 mph road I was traveling at 45 mph and suddenly my speedometer shot up to 75, despite my speed being maintained at 45 (per the gps unit). I had to get onto the freeway where it is 60 mph. Used my gps in order to go the correct speed limit. At a stop light and when parked, the speedometer now registers 75 mph. . Read more...
I have a 2005 chevy Impala LS 3. 8 liter, the speedometer quit working all of a sudden. I can not safely judge the speed I am traveling. Upon my research I have found that there have been several other consumers who have had this same issue on this model of car. The estimated repair would range from $400-$600. A rather expensive repair that I feel could possibly be a recall issue.
With 92,000 miles on my 2005 Impala the tachometer is working strangely, and now frozen at 6,100 rpms. I fear the entire gauge package will fail. The speedometer is starting to seem impacted now too. The internet is full of complaints on this issue, but gm will not recall? please help. We have owned this car since new, and cared for it well. It is in great shape and we love it. But now gauges? help!! thank you.
2004 Chevrolet Impala LS 3. 8 v6 my wife's car started having problems with the instrument cluster not showing the correct speed or tachometer readings. I went on some site to research the problem only to find that this is a problem with this make of auto for quite some time. In most cases Chevrolet has told the owners that the must pay for repairs costing as much as $1000. 00. This is unacceptable. If there a systematic failure of this system on the Impala then Chevrolet needs to correct it before someone thinking they are driving with-in the posted speed limits when in fact they may not be as there is a serious injury. Also found that there have been recalls on these cars. I am in the process of checking the partrs on my vehicle to see if it in fact was affected. I have never been notified wether it was or was not part of any recall. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I have a 2004 chevy Impala, the speedometer is running 40 miles over what the car is really moving. I was almost rear ended because I was not going fast enough on the freeway. Something is faulty in the dash board. I am not sure if there is a recall on this for gm cars.
Speedometer gets stuck at different speeds. Can't determine real speed when this happens. Was told the instrument panel would need to be replaced. Speedometer started working again by itself so I did not replace the instrument panel. Now it is happening again. Checked online and there are many many of the same complaint. This should be a recall item.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph when the speedometer failed. The speedometer would read inaccurate speeds traveled and the contact was unable to determine his rate of speed. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was no longer under warranty and he would have to pay for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 78,950 and the current mileage was 80,076. Updated 01/06/lj the consumer stated the vehicle was repaired. Gm covered the labor and the consumer paid for an hour of labor. Updatd 01/24/jb.
First the fuel gauge stopped working and was like that for a couple weeks, now it is working again, then speedometer went crazy, traveling at approximately 55 to 60 mph, speedometer is reading 15 to 20 mph then drops to 0 it has done this before, so I went online to see if anyone else was having the same problem and if there was a recall. I found numerous complaints from other owners. I was wondering why there is no recall out there since there are so many complaints this could really be a serious issue.
First issue took place on a clear sunny day at highway speed. The speedometer at first seemed to stick as it moved up and down instead of moving normally. The speedometer jumps to extremes in speed, either substantially higher or substantially lower than actual. Once the issue started, it has remained a problem. After looking into the issue, it appears this is a fairly common complaint for gm vehicles, specifically with model years 2000 - 2006. The car in question is a 2005 Impala. The current recommended fix by gm seems to be to replace the instrument panel which can cost upwards of 700 dollars.
2004 chevy Impala: speedometer malfunctions, usually jumps to over 120 mph at freeway speeds but can read low or high. When stopped it currently is stuck at 67 mph. Tomorrow it may be 35 who knows. I feel this is a major safety issue.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the gauges on the instrument panel did not display their proper readings. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer did not perform a diagnosis. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 92,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.
