37 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/15/2010

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Impala LS with an automatic transmission 3. 2 v6. The speedometer will stay on 70mph at rest or more then go over a 120mph when traveling. Once in awhile it may resume back to normal. It is a huge problem in not letting you know exactly what rate of speed you are traveling.

38 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/14/2010

2005 chevorlet Impala: the speedometer gains/drops speed at any given time without warning causing miscalculation of speed during travel. At first, the speedometer returned to the original state, however, after resetting the cruise control function, the unit failed to register speed properly. It has affected the maintenance and performance of the vehicle. Ultimately, the rpm and speedometer gauges, cease to work properly and the car tends to skip between automatic gear shifts. Also, I received a traffic ticket in the state of nc due to the speedometer malfunction. In order to fix this problem for my vehicle, 2005 chevorlet Impala (mileage: 103,117k), the instrument cluster has to be uninstalled from the vehicle, rebuilt, and reinstalled back into the vehicle according to my dealer and a licensed mechanic. . 39 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/04/2010

2005 Chevrolet Impala speedometer not working properly. It reads much faster than you are actually going, often times 40mph +. The problem started on a long trip. Cycling the ignition would bring it back to zero, but that no longer works. There is not one single event that triggers the problem. It cause the driver to maintain speed either way too slow for traffic or way too fast. Creating unsafe conditions. Parts are available, but the parts and labor will cost a minimum of $460. 00. Buying a used part is not a viable option since the instrument cluster is coded to the car. A simple google search produces many thousands of complaints about this problem, yet gm will not run a recall on this. They recalled the silverado with the same problem.

40 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/01/2010

Speedometer was giving erratic readings and now has stopped working all together. I replaced speed sensor and it did not help. I have to look at gps to find speed or estimate based on flow of traffic. This appears to be a common issue based on the complaints I have seen on internet and gm should replace the speedometer/instrument cluster.

43 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/10/2010

While driving a consistant speed, speedometer will fluctuate from stuck at zero to 120mph. Happens constantly. Fuel guage fluctuates also and doesn't always work. If using cruise control while speed appears correct, the Impala will automatically increase its own speed while the speedometer does not change leaving an unsafe opportunity open for very tragic accidents to happen. I cannot beleive that my 2010 pontiac vibe has had 3 recalls and this Impala has not had any for the instrument panel. Do people really have to die or be injured before something is done to protect us?.

44 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

I was driving my car down the road and all of the sudden my speedometer and water gauge stopped working. It said I was going 120 mph but I was only going about 30 mph. The next day I went out to the car and started it while it was parked and it was stuck on 30 mph and the temp gauge showed the needle in the red, but it was not started for more than a minute. I have read many complaints about this and this seems to be a familiar complaint.

49 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Traveling on a dangerous stretch of highway, my speedometer malfunctioned. It registered me as going 90 miles per hour. After several close calls, as conditions were icy, I judged a safe speed and pulled over at the next safest spot on the road. My speed gauge did not reset to 0 mph as normal, but stopped at 50 mph. Now my gas gauge and temp gauge malfunction as well, leaving me no way of knowing how much fuel is in my vehicle. Researching this problem, I noticed many other complaints to this issue. Contacting the manufacturer, I was informed my warranty is expired and they have no obligation to fix the safety problem.

50 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Instrument cluster on 2004 chevy Impala gives incorrect readings to include speed which could result in driving at excessive speeds without proper indication and resulting in unjust speeding fines.

51 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/12/2010

2005 Chevrolet Impala. Speedometer works only intermittently. Sticks at zero when it isn't working. At times, when functioning, though I increase speed or decrease, needle doesn't move in timely manner thus not accurately reporting current speed; needle lags way behind changes in speed. This is dangerous as I can not determine how fast I am going, especially in areas such as school zones where others are anticipating a certain speed and I am sometimes exceeding it unknowingly leading to some close calls with me almost hitting people who pull out in front of me; if I were able to determine my speed accurately and travel at that speed there would not be these close calls. Not covered by warranty due to intermittent problem not complete failure and as warranty is almost expired and will be too cost prohibitive (in excess of $800 and several weeks without a vehicle) to get it fixed after warranty ends so I will have no option but to dangerously and knowingly drive a car not able to determine my speed due to gm's failure to fix this problem that they are more than aware of as they have received multiple complaints. To me, this is a huge safety issue for myself and others I encounter on the roadway and I feel it is Chevrolets responsibility to fix this problem for all of us as they used motors in the instrument cluster that are prone to failure!.

52 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

I have a 2005 chevy Impala, the speedometer does not work. At about 80,000 miles it would say I was going 80 or 120 mph when it was actually about 60mph. Now it doesn't work at all. I have no idea how fast or slow I am going. This is a safety concern for me being disabled, and I can't afford to get rid of the car right now. This should be a re-call.

60 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/27/2009

Speedometer does not function correctly. Speedometer registers erratic speeds, going to speeds of 80, 90, 120+ for no apparent reason. Each time the automobile is turned off and turned on again, it usually will go down by about 10 mph. After several days, it will return to normal, but this pattern repeats after a day or so of registering correct mph. This started about a month ago. We have called Chevrolet and been advised to have the car checked at a deal for defective equipment, but have not been able to find a dealer who will respond to our call.

61 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. I have not been in a accident but I feel my problem could possibly cause one. The speedometer in my car started acting up recently. It is not accurate, it usually reads zero when I am driving but sometimes reads a speed that is clearly inaccurate. I did some research on it and found out it is a common problem with these cars and a very costly repair. At this point in time I cannot afford the repair so I just try to drive slow. This should be a recall.

62 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/12/2009

Just driving down the road no specific road just normal driving and all of a sudden the speedometer either goes up or down does not have correct speed sometimes it will go back to normal after about an hour and sometimes after thirty minutes or after you shut the car off and restart. It happens about twice a week I have not replaced any parts as of yet trying to figure out what the problem is for sure. I am reading online that many people are having this problem and it is the gauges need to be replace and that there is a recall on chevy trucks but mine is a 2004 Impala and as of yet there is not one and there are many people very angry online regarding this matter and want a recall as soon as possible because the cost is about 600 - 800 dollars depending on where you go so they are using gps systems for there speed instead of getting it repaired since the cost is so high.

63 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/11/2009

2004 Impala, speedometer stops working while driving. Mileage continues to work and all other instruments continue but speedometer falls below 0 while driving.

66 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/28/2009

Speedometer was sitting on zero, after stopping it started moving, but was jerky. The speed sensor has been replaced. This did not fixed the problem. The tachometer is not working properly either so unable to tell what my speed is in the car.

67 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

Speed-o-meter needle pegs out and wanders inadvertently. Just happened one day. It is a continual occurrence. Some days it seems to work kind of, and at other times it moves very abruptly on the dial and never smooth like it should. It has been the cause of being pulled over on 3 occasions in the last month due to lack of knowledge of my vehicles' speed. There is no way to determine the vehicles' speed without it (and without a gps device or something similar).

68 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

The instrument cluster in my 2005 chevy Impala experiences periodic malfunctions. The speedometer will read significantly over the actual speed or will remain at zero. The fuel and temperature gauges also read incorrectly. My research indicates that these are common complaints for 2000 to 2006 chevy vehicles yet no recall has been announced. This is a safety hazard that should be addressed through a recall.

69 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/18/2009

Speedometer malfunctioning. There were no known specific activities that led to the occurrence of this issue. About two months ago, during a road trip, I noticed that I was driving slower than normal traffic but my speedometer stated I was doing the speed limit 65 mph. When I looked at my gps, it stated I was doing about 47 mph. When I sped up to 65 mph according to my gps, I was in the flow of traffic. After I stopped, it "reset" itself back to zero when the car was idle. About a week ago, it won't reset anymore. When the car is off, the needle points straight up. When the car is idle, the needle goes to about 80 mph. When I'm driving, it goes past 120 mph. So I'm constantly using my gps in order to maintain the proper speed. I've begun to research on the internet any information on this issue. There are many complaint websites where various Impala owners (2004-2006) that are encountering the same issue. I'm not willing to replace this part; I have over 126,000 miles on my car. But there were other owners who did not have nearly as many miles as I have with the same issues.

70 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/12/2009

Vehicle speedometer suddenly quits functioning. Speedometer suddenly shows high speed (example 120 mph) when driving highway speeds (verified at 70 with gps). Speedometer remains stuck in this position. I was able to clear the error after returning home and cycling the ignition from off to on several times. This occurred on July 2009 also under the same circumstances.
