I bought a 2002 chevy Impala and got it looked at before purchase the only thing that popped up on the code reader was there is an electrical problem, sometimes my signal lights work sometimes they dont, my speedometer doesn't light up or anything. I then start to smell gas when I turn on the heat or air it's unbearable. I then proceeded to check for any recalls and there are a few dealing with the engine cooling and exhaust/gas leak along with electrical issues. They said the car could catch on fire at any time. I have two toddlers so there is no way that this is a safe car.

I own a 2008 with less than 50,000 miles on it and the check engine light came on. I had it diagnosed and was told it is the secondary air injection system (diagnostic trouble code p2444) which caused the vehicle to fail the emissions test. The dealership refuses to repair it and states the warranty is only valid for 3 years or 30,000 miles. I cannot get the vehicle inspected until the problem is fixed and the check engine light goes off. I am very disappointed that a car only 2 years old can have such a major problem in such a short amount of time. The repairs will cost $1600 to $2000 because it is an internal problem with the engine. I tried to get the code reset only to have the check engine light come back on.

Safety recall # 09047: oil drip from 2002 Impala 3. 8l engine may cause fire when deposited on exhaust manifold and may spread to spark plug wire channel and beyond. Date of defect recall is conspicuously missing but I received this notice the week of June 8, 2009, I called dealer on June 10, 2009. Dealer is stating that they are backed up in doing the repair due to lack of parts to fix the problem. We are driving cars that are just waiting to go on fire and this is not the only time this type of potential fire problem has been addressed on these specific engines.
As I was attempting to start my vehicle that morning I heard a loud boom and saw smoke coming from under the hood. When the hood was raised, the engine was in flames. We had to call the fire department to extinguish the fire.
I was driving my car and all of a sudden I lost acceleration. My car felt like it didn't have any power. So when I press on the gas, I have to have the pedal almost to the floor to get my car to go. My husband is a mechanic and he checked out the fuel pump and fuel filter and hooked the car to the computer at work to find out what the problem could be and nothing came back. So we got online and started looking up defects in Impala's and for the 2002 Impala, they have had to replace the catalytic converters because of them being defective. My car has 96,000 miles on it so according to the internet information I have gathered, my car should be fixed for free at a chevy dealership.
In the past several weeks, my vehicle has began to lose power, especially in low rpm range. The vehicle spits on sputters on hard acceleration and takes several (30 or better) seconds to reach 55 mph. I am an ase trained mechanic and diagnosed the vehicle as having a faulty catalytic converter. A vacuum test determined that the pressure drops significantly above 2500 rpm's and to 0 by 4000 (when it misfires). The cat makes noise and even jumped the hanger (telling me the converter is twisting from the back pressure). Once I diagnosed it, I looked at a list of gm TSB's for this vehicle and this was listed on there along with instructions to the dealer / tech to replace free of charge until the service life has reached 10 years or 120k. My vehicle fits both conditions as it is a 2003 with 99k. I contacted my dealer and was told they would not replace it free as the warranty on emissions items is 80k. When I even gave them the TSB number (special policy adjustment - catalytic converter # 05551 - (9/14/05)) they said that was just in the case of plenum damage resulting from the clogged converter. Despite the fact that it in no way even mentions the plenum. This is the only vehicle I currently own and I have been out of work for a while. I can't afford to replace it, nor to have my vehicle tied up for days to do a 2 hour job. However, if it continues, it will blow up. How can I resolve this?.

Brown milky film in the radiator was diagnosed as being caused by a leaking intake manifold gasket. Replacement of the gasket did fix the problem. Based on internet searches and dealer information, this is a very common problem.
My Impala began to have issues with the thermostat reading going from cool to hot extremely quick and the red check engine light came on. I had the vehicle towed to a local dealership and was told that these vehicles are notorious for intake manifold issues and that this is the cause of my problem. I was also told that Chevrolet is aware of this problem and still refuses to issue a recall. It will cost approximately $1,500. 00 to repair the vehicle and if repairs are not made, the vehicle will continue to have a slow leak or eventually, the engine will go completely.
My vehicle had lack of power especially on the highway. Nearly rear ended a couple of times. Took it to a transmission shop, thought that was the problem. It turned out to be a clogged catalytic converter. My car is a 2001 chevy at the time my mileage was 66,624 . The mechanic informed me that if I didn't repair it, I could damage the transmission and or engine. I had them replace it a cost of 745. 31 labor & parts. After the repair the car worked fine & happy to say it still does. Sent all necessary papers to general motors for re-imbursement under the 80,000/8 yr emissions warranty but my claim was denied! the reason was I didn't take it to a dealer but I felt it was a safety hazard to me & others. (cat converter was blocked/clogged).

At around 75,000 miles, my 2001 Impala began to lose power, particularly when accelerating. I tried fuel system cleaners, replaced fuel filter, air filter, etc. No help. Then one day a hole was blown through my intake manifold. That's right, the intake manifold. I took it to a local mechanic, because I knew I couldn't afford the gm dealership shop price, and was informed that the egr valve and catalytic converter were totally stopped up consequently trapping hot engine exhaust in the intake area with nowhere to go. The cost of parts and repairs cost me over $800. I have had many cars over the years and never had a catalytic converter completely stop up. According to my local mechanic this is a very common problem with this car model. I think gm should reimburse for this expense.
My complaint is about a 2005 Impala. When I start the car in the morning and I turn on the heat I smell gasoline fumes inside the car. I call gm and I was directed to take the vehicle to superior Chevrolet. They told me the problem was with the coolant. It cost me $90. 00. The problem returned a week later after I have had the file to case closed. The caseworker was ms glasko.

Have a Chevrolet Impala with a intake gasket leak. It is so bad it makes my young children physically sick. The turn signals have decided to only work once in a while and the locks on the doors (ours is a 4 door) are sticking - trapping us inside or keeping us locked out. Our trunk wont open at all!.
02' Chevrolet Impala. Using three different confined space monitors I have found continuing presence of carbon monoxide and methane emissions in the interior/cab of my vehicle. Gm has inspected the vehicle and has also found the presence of vehicle emissions inside the vehicle but, they contend the amounts are within epa standards. The problem is on going and continues to be a health risk for my family. Frequent headaches and fatigue are often affects after operating the vehicle. Nausea has occurred after lengthy trips in the vehicle. We have resulted to driving with the windows down to help aleve the effects on the carbon monoxide, but this isn't the solution. The emissions also creates an odor that clings to your body. What can I do?.
Plastic bag bypassed air intake vent leading to the air filter and cut off all air flow to the engine while on the freeway. Auto completely went dead on a very dangerous part of the 205 overpass in west linn, oregon. Large truck almost rear ended us from behind due to the sudden stop. Had car towed from west linn oregon to curt warner Chevrolet in vancouver, washington. Had car repaired by curt warner and wanted to know why the air intake vent was able to let foreign objects into the air intake vent and completely cut off all air flow to the engine. Would think all air vents on all cars are covered by a screen to prevent anything from covering the air filter. Curt warner would not cover the charges of $107. 22 (labor = $74. 00 & parts = $18. 15 , misc. Charges = $7. 40, tax = $7. 67) to replace the air filter and take a plastic bag off the air filter. Extremely concerned about this issue. Allot of 2000 Chevrolet Impala police cars may have the same problem while on duty. This will cause a accident. I sure hope no one has a fatality before gm corrects this dangerous problem.

Abs light comes on at random indicating that abs is disabled, restarting the vehicle resets this condition for a while, dealers unable to diagnose or repair. Egr and egr solenoid failed, 3 visits to dealer did not fix problem, but rather on two occassions they deliberatly disabled the egr system to hide the problem from me. I finally repaired the problem myself by replaing the egr solenoid at my own expense.
