At any speed my power steering started to fail intermittently, with any specific warning. This has occurred 4 times in the last 7 days, luckily no one was hurt but the last time I did go off the road and immediately brought it to my dealership. They contend they have not found any problem, and that the diagnostics do not show any issue.

My 2001 Chevrolet Impala is jerking when applying the brakes, front end sounds like it is ready to fall apart, front end wobbles when driving, knocks when put into drive or reverse, transmission bogs when shifting brought to the dealership they drove it and decided a new steering shaft would solve all my problems, amd gm is also aware of this problem and used to repace shaft but that got too expensive so now they have a kit to lubricate the bearing. My car is under warranty, but this problem is not included . Steering is essential in a vehicle. I find this problem a safety issue for myself, passengers, and others on the road with me. I am filing this complaint for documentation. If ever there is an accident related to the steering issue of my car I want the courts to know that all were aware of this problem I was having and nobody wanted to fix a defect that they were aware of. I will be fixing it at my expense and when it is recalle I would like to be reimbursed.

Power steering intermittently locks up during turns at low speeds. This same thing happened 3 years ago. Chevrolet dealers and customer service both deny any evidence of a recurring problem with Impalas although the NHTSA web site and an Impala owners' web site both list numerous occurrences of this malfunction. This is a very dangerous situation that renders the car temporarily out of control.

Steering assist stops when turning. Not all the time but it has happened several times. Its very scary when in traffic. So far no accidents, but its just a matter of time when .
Odometer display goes out intermittently-dealer service department has indicated the only way to correct this problem is to replace the dash. Sounds excessive for a vehicle with less than 42,000 miles. The water pump leaking creates more of a safety hazard. It leaks onto the power steering belt, causing the belt to slip, causing the power steering to go out intermittently. There is no warning when this happens. Again, this part failing with less than 42,000 miles on a car seems out of line. Mr.
Bent and twisted fingers morse lee is an 80 year old gentlemen. His index and middle fingers are bent towards his baby fingers. His center joint of the middle fingers are off parallel to the other finger joints approximately 15 degrees. The last joint of the middle finger is off parallel the opposite to the middle joint. The index finger joints are off parallel also. These joints are displaying the typical bending and twisting found with Impala drivers. He and his wife both share this problem. Steering system is defective. . . Too hard to turn. This has caused the fingers and thumbs to become deformed (twisted and bent) from turning the stiff wheel. I also have a neck pain which leads to a pain shooting up the back side of my neck and causing a headache. These problems started after I purchased my 2001 Impala.
The first time it happened I wanted to turn left into a shopping center. I slowed down to turn left and the steering was to difficult to turn, I had to run over a curb and over a patch of grass to avoid hitting a car. I stopped the car, put it in park and attempted to turn the steering wheel to the left and right to no avail. I shut the engine off and started it back up again, put the car in drive and the steering wheel turned, but not with ease. This also occurred on my way home into my driveway. This problem has occured about fifteen times. This is a "safety hazard" and could be life threatening.
Tight/stiff steering has resulted in index and middle fingers becoming bent and twisted to conform to the contour of the steering wheel. This high effort damage to the fingers are irreversable. This has a crippling effect in that it cause the tendons to move off center to the fingers and reduces the griping efforts of the hands and restricts finger movement. This stiff steering results in shoulder pain which often forces people to seek medical attention because the pain radiated down their arm and they think they are having a heart attack and if visit the hospital for such. The shoulder pain has also resulted in an increase in physical therapy treatments. This information presented by my friend mike tomich 989, 665-2311 mtomich@tband. Net dt.
The stiff/tight steering on my Impala is causing my hands, wrist, elbow, shoulders and back to become very painful fingers. My fingers are bent and twisted to fit to the contour of the steering wheel. With this tight steering the texture on the wheel wears off and the operator has to grasp the wheel harder to turn the wheel. Have to use two hands and grip wheel hard to turn it. . Read more...
My wife had complained of the steering going out on her for the last two years. I could never get the steering failure to manifest itself for me, so I figured it must have been an anomalie. Last month, the steering problem occurred for me at very poor times. I was turning into my neighborhood and lost all control of steering and almost ran into my subdivision's sign. The second time was when I was exiting a parking lot in nashville, and the steering froze. I rev'd the engine up to see if the increase in pump pressure would help, but to no avail. My wife instructed me to shut off the engine, and restart it. The steering responeded poorly, and I limped the car home and it is parked there today awaiting a new pump from napa. I tried to pull the car out of the garage this weekend, but the steering couldn't even function enough for that task. This steering problem almost killed me, my wife, and possibly anyone else that would have been unfortunite enough to be in the path of this car. Without power steering, this car is almost impossible to steer, unless you are very strong and recognize what is happening. Thank god for 4 wheel abs brakes!.
While driving on highway at 45mph went to apply brakes to slow down to make a turn and the power steering went out. This has happened 4 or 5 times in the past seven months. Contacted dealer, he has checked the power steering system and has not been able to find the cause.
When driving the power steering has gone out three times, causing the consumer to lose control. Had to replace the power steering pump twice due to a leakage. Consumer lost control of the vehicle and almost hit a tree.
While traveling in passing gear power steering fails. Please provide further information.
