38 Ignition problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

I own a 2005 chevy Impala and for the last year my speedometer has failed on several occasions. The speedometer will jump without warning leading to unsafe traveling conditions especially while traveling on highways. Cycling the ignition will temporarily fix the issue but this has become a hassle. When I started to research the issue on the internet I found hundreds of complaints on the same issue. I also found where there was a class action law suit that forced the repair of the same problem on other vehicles for the same model year range. Why do we as consumers have to pay for and fix the problem when it is an obvious defect in manufacturing? why didn't the class action lawsuit alert the NHTSA that this is potentially a bigger problem? do we have to wait for deaths like the Toyota recall before someone takes this seriously? imagine that you think you are traveling at a safe rate of speed on ice covered roads when in reality you are not because of defective electronics hmmm. I refuse to pay for a known defect, us consumers are entitled to protection from a blatant disregard to manufacturing standards and safety. I welcome your response. . Read more...

39 Ignition problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/23/2009

The security light started flashing on and off, causing my headlights to flash while driving and causing the lights in my dashboard to flash also. It ended up stranding me in a parking lot because the so-called security feature on this car shut the ignition off and would not allow me to start my car.

Car intermittently fails to start. Power to accessories good, but ignition will not work. After 30 minutes or so, it starts, with no problems for 1 -2 months, then it happens again. I took it to the dealer, who read the code and replaced a part, but after a few moths it started happening again.

41 Ignition problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/12/2009

2004 chevy Impala has a malfunctioning "passlock" system. The ignition will not allow you to start the car at times - very frustrating. You must wait for it to reset itself, which sometimes takes a half hour, I know many other Impala owners are having the same problem.

42 Ignition problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/02/2009

While driving to chicago the tachometer went all the way to the red. After pulling over to confirm the car was not running hot, I found that I could reset the gauge by slowly turning the key on and off to the accessory position; until the needle reached its original position. This continued to happen sporadically for a month or so, and then I noticed I was driving on the interstate with the flow of traffic, but the speedometer was only reading 30 miles per hour. I had previously used my cruise control at the set speed, and was able to use the 'resume' button to give me an approximation of how fast I was currently going. This allowed me to get home safely. Again, I was able to reset the speedometer by turning the key in the ignition to the on and off position. The next failure came shortly thereafter, with the gas gauge. Knowing that it was a full tank, it was reading empty; again being reset with the on/off of the key in the ignition. I took the car to the local dealership to get these safety issues taken care of, and was informed this was going to cost me $600 because it was out of warranty. . . It only has 40k miles on the vehicle. I have been trying to resolve this through Chevrolet ever since then, and they agreed to pay 1/2. This only leads me to believe that it is indeed a safety issue that should be covered by the manufacturer. I can't drive a vehicle without a speedometer, tachometer, or gas gauge, and I can only wonder how many other individuals are out there that have been in this same situation.

43 Ignition problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/24/2008

I have noticed that for the past few weeks, whenever the temperature is below 20 degrees, the speedometer acts funny. The speedometer reads anywhere from 25 to 80 miles faster than my actual speed; today, I wasn't going any more than 30mph at the most, and the speedometer needle was pointing directly down to the car floor. A few people on a couple of message boards suggested turning the ignition key to 'accessories' on and off rapidly several times, but all it did was bring the speedometer down from 85 to 70.

44 Ignition problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/14/2008

This is an ongoing repeated problem. My 2001 Impala randomly won't start about 3 times a week. I will take the key out of the ignition wait 10 minutes and the security (passlock) system will reset and the car will crank, but no time in between. . . This has been going on for about 8 months now and I have seen numerous occasions of this happening to other people both that I have spoken with and that I have read online. . This does not just occur in Chevrolets. One person said that it occurred in a pontiac. I would assume this is a gm problem. . . And why has this not been recalled? this is an extreme inconvenience from Chevrolet and I have read instances where the problem had been fixed by replacing the ignition, bcm, etc. And this problem still continues. Why are there so many people with this problem and no known solution. Recall? defect?.

48 Ignition problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/03/2008

2001 Impala sometimes won't start. Had car three years. Replaced ignition cylinder once already. When this happens you turn the key clockwise and wait 10 minutes then turn off and try again. Usually after 10 minutes it will start, but sometimes have to go to round 2 or 3 and once through round 7. That's right an hour and a half! occurs about 4-5 times a month I'd guess. Not what you want to have to endure alone and 19 and late at night and my daughter. This is a safety hazard whether gm wants to admit it or not. This should be recalled and fixed!.

49 Ignition problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 05/20/2008

2004 Impala, speedometer problem works when it wants to,at times registers 0 and at other times the needle buries itself, would be able to click back to 0 by turning the ignition on and off until it went back to 0 but worked erratically, finally stopped working altogether, temp gauge same way. Only way to fix problem was to have each and every gauge rebuilt and not replaced with gm part as the part they replace it with is the same !@#$% originally installed, researched this on line and found 1000's of others with same problem, this should be recalled, as when the temp gauge buries itself you don't know for sure what is going on, if its for real or ????.

52 Ignition problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Security passlock system keeps car from starting at random times. Safety concern is that someone can get stranded on a sub-zero cold night or can be in a dangerous situation and not be able to start the Impala. Car will work fine for months at a time, then randomly will not start. After 15 minutes or so, the car will then start. . . Sometimes. There are many complaints of this problem (see carcomplaints. Com and look under electrical problems).

55 Ignition problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/04/2007

Driving on a trip and all of a sudden my speedometer mph indicator jumper to 90 mph as I was sitting at a stop light. When I proceeded forward the indicator needle reset you 90 mph and this reset continued until it was pointing straight down. It did not reset after turning the ignition off and on. I had no idea how fast my vehicle was going after that. I went to a web site for auto troubles and found 72 reports of the same problem with gm speedometers. I strongly feel that this should have been a recall since a nonfunctional speedometer is a safety hazard. Ps - other gm models also have reports of this malfunctioning speedometers. Gm want $500 to replace the entire speedometer, when a simple capacitor fix is all that is required. A temp fix works for a few weeks, they it happens again and gm said if you replace the speedometer and it happens again, then it costs another $500 to replace the replacement? gm wants to fleece us!.

Everyday for the last 7 years I have experienced this problem. In 2005 I had the bcm replaced, and gm blamed the problem on the viper alarm system. As of last week general motors cut a new key, because the old key was stated as the problem. Now that the problem still exist gm informs me that I need to replace the ignition.
