3 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/20/2011

We purchased our 2007 Impala ss on 11/17/09 with 33,003 miles on it. On July 20, 2011 while driving home from work with my wife and stepson on the I-94 freeway in clinton township, mi. , the leftside rear tire blewout. We notice that it had broke the inner plastic piece and bent the muffler tip and there was clearly no rubber left on the inside of the tire all you saw was wires. Had to put our spare tire on. Took the car into the tire shop on July 22, 2011 to have that tire replaced, service guy said there was no rubber left on the inside of the left tire in the rear, and the wires were clearly visible and showed us them, which we had noticed when this occured. He also stated that on the rear rightside the wires were showing too. We had him replace all 4 tires on the vehicle. He also stated that we had been the 4th Impala they had replaced tires on in the past week. While on the lift we noticed that the back tires were slightly leaning out, like (/) left side and (\) right side, I told him that I want the tires back and he gave them to me. We took them home and took picks of them and the back of our car to show how the tires were still leaning out, and also took pictures of where the plastic had been broke in the wheel well. This has happened in less than 20,000 mile since we purchased the vehicle. I went to the dealership that we purchased the vehicle from and told the service guy what had happened, he stated that there was no recall as of yet on this problem but that other people had came in with the same complaints, that I should get ahold of gm and see what they say. He told me that he was aware of the police vehicle that had been recalled but as of yet knew nothing about all others. He stated that he wished he could do something for us but there was nothing he could do. When is gm gonna do something about this?.

4 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/18/2011

I have a 2008 chevy Impala, at 23,000 miles the tires are bald. I rotated them every 5000 miles. I bought this car brand new in late 2007. From reading the other forums on line, it's not the tires. It's the rear end alignment from the factory. This tires are going to cost $1,400. 00 to replace and I'm being told the new one's will wear out just as fast as the old one's. I see there's a class action suit agains't gm for 2007 & 2008 Impala's. They fixed all the Impala cop cars but not the general public!.

5 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/15/2011

Purchased 2008 Impala ss factory demo car with 3000 miles and at 15000 miles a rear tire blew out at 65 miles an hour and almost wrecked us. Rear tires were wore out on inside. Down to the cord which at 15000 miles seemed impossible. Replaced tires and dealer said alignment was not the problem but was normal for the model car and now at 23000 miles rear tires are wore out again on inside and front tires are the original and still look new. Why can't the dealer repair the problem instead of selling tires every 10000 miles? I think they just want the extra cash flow during this time the economy is slow .

6 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/25/2011

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle was taken for routine mechanic when the contact was informed that the rear tires were worn from the inside. The contact stated that the tired were recently replaced and only traveled approximately 7,000 miles on the tires. The contact believed the failure as caused by faulty suspension rods. The tires were replaced. The contact called the dealer regarding the rear suspension and they advised that there were no recalls related to the failure. The failure mileage was 52,000.

7 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/24/2011

My family was traveling to a funeral driving a 2008 Impala at 75mph. Tires were properly inflated and visually checked for wear by general observation. Tires appeared to have plenty of tread and no cupping. Left rear tire detonated sending tire tread/belts/debris into wheel well area. This ripped fuel filler assembly loose and sent it below car where it trailed with no remaining fuel cap and frayed sensor wires exposed. Car was brought to a safe stop beside interstate. When trying to make temporary repairs it was noticed that opposite rear tire had wear down to steel belts on inside two inches. The remaining tire appeared almost new from exterior view. It was replaced along with blown tire as this tire was just as deadly. Repair by insurance exceeded $4,000. Contacted Chevrolet dealer where vehicle was purchased and have not received a response. I believe this is a potentially deadly service issue that needs to be addressed so that repairs to rear suspension can be made. Most people are driving around totally unaware that their tires only appear safe. Unless the car is put on a lift rack the wear issue is not obvious to the average automobile owner.

8 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/11/2011

I have experience rapid tread wear on the inside of my rear tires. Last set of rear tires were worn down to the steel after approx. 18. 000 miles. Current set of rear tires have approx. 12,000 miles on them and are showing significant wear on the inside. A day ago I was driving on a rain covered interstate early in the morning. The rear end of the car swung out to the left and I lost control and spun around 2 times ending up in the grassy median. Luckily, no one else was near me when this happened and no damage was done to the vehicle. Currently, I am trying to get gm to repair the problem which I believe is the same problem that the 2007-2008 police vehicles were recalled for.

9 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

2008 chevy Impala has premature loss of tread on both rear tires front tires do not show any noticable tread wear but rear tires have lost all of inboard tread. This is a defect in either the wheel mounting or suspension system causing unsafe operation of this vehicle.

10 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/15/2011

I am experiencing excessive inside tire wear on my rear tires and apparently it is a common problem with 2008 Impalas. I spoke with customer service obviously not in this country, and was told I would have to pay to inspect my car. I then spoke to a service manager who denied any known problems. He then let it slip that a modification of the struts was necessary to achieve proper alignment of the rear and that gm would not cover it. They will however repair police Impalas at no charge. I declined to pay only to be told I would have to cover the cost of repair anyway, kind of like adding insult to injury. When will action be taken to prevent accidents due to blow outs; which apparently have occurred? not everyone looks under their car to inspect the tires and this wear is not visible otherwise. Customer service was not fazed in the least that I might buy elseware, her comment that is your choice ,so much for service.

11 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/13/2011

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that both rear tires were wearing excessively. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the tires were rotated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 26,000.

12 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/22/2011

Purchased new 2008 Impala, had to replace tires at 35000. Always rotated and balanced and kept proper pressures. Now at 56000 and am being told by chevy 1800. 00 to repair rear alignment. Car is driven 99% on the interstate. Again need new tires whats up??? chevy denies any problems but the web is full of issues surrounding this. Is there no other recourse????.

13 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/29/2011

2007 Chevrolet Impala ltz wears rear tires on the inside of the tire and can cause tire failure. The car tends to skid side ways on wet pavement because of the lack of tire contact with pavement.

14 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/20/2011

2007 Impala has bad rear end alignment, new tires bought in January 2011, already showing uneven wear on rear tires only. The damage is on the inner part of the rear tires. I should not have to pay out of my pocket for the rear cam kit to be installed to fix the problem.

15 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/11/2011

Vehicle performed poorly over 35 mph on highway with the rear of the vehicle swaying excessively during snowy or wet conditions. The tires on the back of the vehicle wore prematurely on the inside . I purchased four sets of new back tires in a span of 4 months and had to have two alignments done at separate times because the first didn't initially fix the problem. It came to a point that I was frightened to drive my vehicle during snowy or wet conditions in fear of causing a major accident. I have spent roughly $700 on this issue and believe it could have been resolved if gm would have addressed the consumer's vehicle problem initially.

16 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/09/2011

2007 chevy Impala - rear suspension problem results in dangerous stability issues in ice, snow, and rain. The rear end of the car slides around making it difficult to stay on the road and in my lane. Also results in uneven and fast tire wear. Gm has admitted there is an issue (bulletin 08032), but will only apply to government cars.

17 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 12/28/2010

The 2007 Chevrolet Impala is an extremely unsafe automobile in wet or snow/ice conditions, even sand or salt; this car is the worst handling automobile possibly ever designed by gm. The Impala's rear end slides left or right with only a minimal amount of debris, water, or snow on the road. This is not just a little slip now and again, it is uncontrollable and an extreme safety hazard. Every person that has had any dealings with this type of car will tell you the same thing. Ask any mechanic, dealership, tire sales rep, and most of all, a 2007 chevy Impala owner and all will attest to the poor design of this car. My wife and I will not, or should say cannot, drive this car when there is any sign of rain or snow in the forecast. Something must be done about this car. Not only is there a handling problem, but tire wear is almost unbelievable. The alignment specifications are at such extremes that tires are ruined in 10,000 miles or less. When looking at the car from the rear, the Impala's wheels tilt in to the point it looks as though they could collapse inward under the car. I have had the dealership and two different alignment shops check the alignment and all say the same; the car is within specs and to be extra careful as that the handling of these cars are unsafe. What gives? does it take a fatality to occur before gm will do anything about this design flaw? please look into this matter, lives depend on it. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who drives this car cannot deny there is something seriously wrong the 2007 Chevrolet Impala. A final note, it was brought to my attention that all police cars of this type were recalled for this very problem, is that indeed the case? if so, what about my family's safety and every other family that owns one of these cars? do we not deserve the same protection?.

18 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 12/21/2010

The VIN was unavailable. Nw.

19 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 12/13/2010

First snow storm I drove this car in, the cars rear end slides all over the road. I have driven in snow all my life and this was the scariest vehicle I have ever drove in slick weather. I changed the tires believing this was the problem only to see that the rear tires are both wearing on the inside. After having this car for over a year the rear end feels like it slides back and forth and is at its worst in rain and especially snow. I see there are many complaints of this kind for this car. The rear end sliding around and the inner tires on the rear end wearing out quickly. I really like everything else about this car and I have a truck that I drive during bad weather. I would hope that Chevrolet would do something to fix this problem. I will sell or trade the car before I will ever drive it in snow and I cannot afford to keep tires on the rear end.

21 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

I have a 2008 Chevrolet Impala. I purchased 4 new tires for the vehicle. Within a few months, I noticed that both rear tires had a strip approximately 2 to 3 inches wide worn completely bald. The strip was on the inside of the tire, moving towards the center of the tire. The wear strip was so bad that the tires were useless and needed to be replaced. This defect was not a tire issue, nor a driver issue. The vehicle is driven by adults.

22 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/17/2010

We have a 2008 Impala, we had to have new rear tires at 24,000 miles and realigned. My tires were so bad it almost did not pass inspection. That is how I found out about the tires being bad. And now I hear that others are having the same problem. I have the before and after measurements.

Failure Date: 07/18/2010

2007 chevy Impala - very dangerous to drive on slick roads - abnormal rear tire wear due to alignment issues - wears out tires in approximately 15000 miles due to excessive inner wear / camber out of alignment.

24 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/12/2010

I've had to replace rear tires every 23,000 miles. Took car to chevy dealer and he told me that the holes for the struts would have to be elongated and modified with a camber kit at my expense or else the rear alignment would not be according to specs. I paid for front and rear alignment, chevy will not pay for this unless its a police car. It is a factory defect, there are a lot of the same model year Chevrolets with the same problem.

25 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 07/04/2010

Severe inner surface tire wear on rear wheels of 2007-2008 Chevrolet Impala vehicles. Technical service bulletin 08032 is on file with general motors, acknowledging the problem, but willing only to pay for necessary repairs to police vehicles, when in fact the flaw exists with all 2007-2008 Impala vehicles. We purchased the car as a demo model in 2009 and were not made aware of the problem. We believe the dealer was honest, and also not aware of the problem at the time. We believe this to be a safety issue as well, since handling on wet roads is effected due to the fact the rear tires are contacting the road surface only on 1-2" of the inside surface of the tires.

26 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

Had to replace rear driver's tire at 17,000 miles due to wear down to the metal. Took the vehicle into the dealer to check wheel alignment and found the rear so misaligned that the adjustment struts had to be elongated. Spoke with gm customer service rep and was told this was not a warranty issue.

27 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 04/23/2010

I have a 07 chevy Impala ss. I replaced the tires sept 28, 2009, had them rotated at a gm dealer in Jan 10 when I got an oil change. My husband was doing some brake work 2 weeks ago and noticed my tires were completely bald on the inside edges. After researching the issue, my car has a manufacturers defect (TSB # 08032) and gm engineers created a camber fix kit for the issue but gm will only pay for repairs if the car is coded as a "police vehicle". I was on hold for over an hour in an hour an a half conversation with chevy customer service this week. They told me they would document it but basically sorry for your luck. I asked for a manager and after a 3 minute conversation she hung up on me saying she would note my case as "dissatisfied" but there was nothing else they would do. She said all I could do was contact NHTSA and place a complaint. I don't believe gm is standing behind their product as their new tv ad eludes when they know there is a problem, fix it for their fleet customers, but refuse to help the average citizen. From reviewing the complaint site many others have had the same issue with their Impala. Gm won't help the average citizen fix this manufacturers defect unless a recall is issued; these were the words of the customer care rep I spoke with. Please review all the complaints on this issue, request gm provide their company stats on the fleet vehicles they've fixed, and issue a recall for this issue. This should have been covered as my car is under full warranty at this time but they look at this issue as an alignment issue not a rear suspension issue (which is what it is) to get themselves out of paying for their mistakes.

28 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

On 2008 chevy Impala, the insides of all four tires were worn to the cord. The tires had been rotated regularly. The car was returned to the dealer who claimed the tires had not been rotated and that he had never heard of any defect. . We printed information from this website showing that this problem had been reported several times. The dealer still denied any defect even though one of the workers said he had replaced tires with the same problem.

29 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 02/24/2010

I am having excessive wear on the inside of both rear tires. I have replaced my rear tires twice in less than 5 months. Both of my rear tires blew out at the same time on 2/24/10 while I was driving on the highway. There has been a recall on the police vehicles for the same issue which turns out to be alignment issues. I am fearful for my safety in this car along with the expenses being incurred due to a poor quality product.

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the rear passenger side tire continuously wore prematurely. The contact had several alignments performed on the vehicle within two years. In addition, when driving in snowy weather, the contact was unable to travel above 35 mph or the rear end of the vehicle would fish tail. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The current mileage was 109,000 and the approximate failure mileage was 35,000. The VIN was unavailable.

31 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 12/20/2009

The contact owns a 2007 chevy Impala. He stated that when snow and ice are on the road the rear end of the vehicle would slide "very dangerously". While driving at speeds of less than 30 mph, the rear end of the vehicle would swing outward whenever he would drive over a sheet of ice, snow or during inclement weather conditions. The dealer stated that the tires needed to be aligned and rotated. No repairs were made to date. The failure and current mileages were under 104,000.

32 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/01/2009

There is a rear suspension alignment issue on this vehicle. The rear wheels are kicked-out causing inner wear on the tires after minimal mileage. I was forced to replace all four tires (because they had been rotated) after only 25k miles.

33 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 10/10/2009

2008 chevy Impala was shipped from the factory unaligned causing premature tire wear. There may be a camber related issue causing premature wear on the inner edge of the rear tires. Problems start at about 10,000 miles. I replaced the rear tires twice in one year.

34 Rear Suspension problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

Excessive tire ware on rear tires---noticed there was a problem at 22,000 mile's at 27,000 miles car would not hold the road . In the dead of summer car drove like you were on a lake of ice( 2007 chevy ss Impala)talked to dealers they said not a reported problem found out later that was !@#$%. Its a susp problem . So much so there is an after market kit to correct problem had to take car to tire dealer where they corrected problem. Reported problem to g. M. And got more !@#$%.

35 Rear Suspension problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/11/2009

Started having issues with my 2008 chevy Impala with what I thought was a tire balance problem. Did required tire rotation as recommended at 6000, 10,000 and then again at 13,500. Dealer said tires may be out of round and suggested road force balancing at 16,500 miles. This did not change the issue, so went to goodyear dealer and found out that the inside 2 inches of all four tires were wearing excessively with the rear two less that 2/32 inches of tread left. Goodyear shot the alignment and showed that the alignment was way off and tires could not be warranted with an alignment issue. Took back to chevy dealer to inform them of the alignment issue. They said alignment was not warranted after 7,500 miles and also would not replace the 4 tires. I did get the dealer to gratuitously do a 4 wheel alignment that also showed the camber and toe, especially in the rear was "out of tolerance and exceeded cross-tolerance" on their machine as well. The camber could not be adjusted without extra work (elongating the bolt holes or a chamber alignment kit). Contacted gm complaint line for resolution to no avail, saying I had to prove that there is a defect on the vehicle. This is an inherent safety problem with 2007 and 2008 Impalas that has fostered numerous complaint to you including 5 already this year. Gm issued a TSB #08032 for police Impalas that are on the same platform and suspension, but never extended that to the public. Seems to me that the rear suspension has an severe defect that can cause tire blowout without warning. No tires should wear like that with less than 17,000 miles without a rear suspension and alignment problem that needs to be recalled for repair and replacement of the parts and tires. I saw at least 12 complaints in the first 24 pages of 2007 Impala complaints to the odi. Please investigate this problem before someone is seriously injured or killed as a result of this continuing Impala issue.
