Took vehicle to dealership for standard oil change. While completing inspection form they indicated that the steering column is leaking. They recommend immediate replacement for $1,300. 00. This vehicle only had 57,000 miles on it. I told them not to replace it. They stated you could have a small leak for many years but it will eventually get worse and leading to steering failure. I asked about this being under warranty but of course I was 2 months outside of my warranty. I have been driving it since they recommended replacement with no issues yet. I am hoping that a recall will be recommended for this vehicle. I mostly do highway driving with this vehicle and put on 70 miles a day. Hopefully enough unfortunate individuals have this problem and we can get a recall started.

Intermediate shaft in steering shaft failed. It caused a clunking or knocking feel and sound. Chevy dealer said it was a "chronic problem" with the Impala. Fixed under warranty. Otherwise it would have cost about $300. 00. Also rotors in front warped prematurely. Another "known problem". Power steering unit or serpentine belt squeals. Chevy dealer said it's" normal" ?.
2005 Impala popping sound made in steering wheel when turning vehicle. After consulting with mechanic he stated it could be a problem that could cause my steering to fail while driving. After performing research online it appears this is a common problem with the initial design of the vehicle's steering lubrication system. This could be a potential safety concern if the steering fails while in motion and the driver is unable to steer the car.
I am the original owner of a 2000 chevy Impala with 85,000 miles. Intermediate steering shaft fails every 20-25,000 miles. It has been replaced three times already, and is failing again. Dealer admits it is a design flaw that affects all 2000-2005 design Impala's. You know it is failing when you feel clunking and looseness in the steering at low speeds when cornering. I have talked with many other Impala owners, and they have identical problems. Costs $250 every time this part must be replaced. This is a significant safety concern when a critical steering component repeatedly fails.

2003 Chevrolet Impala (I bought it new) problem turning the steering wheel and braking, I hear and feel clunking coming from the front end of the vehicle in the steering column . I also felt a vibration in the steering wheel. I had the car into the dealer 3 times. Each time the problem wet away for a month or so but returned. Each time I drive the car I hope the steering does not fail and cause an accident. No more general motors cars for me. I have bought gm since1969. I will not buy another gm car.
