I have been hearing a clunking noise with my 2006 Impala around 21,000 miles. When I brought it to the chevy dealer where I purchased the vechicle, they told me it was the rack and pinion system that needed to be changed. At this time the vechicle was four years old and no longer under warranty. I done some further research and spoke to a few other Impala owners and they had the same issue, and had the intermediate steering shaft replaced. I brought it to another chevy dealer and self diagnosed the problem and they agreed with me. I had it changed with 28,000 miles on it. I contacted chevy and and asked how this part can fail with so few miles. They blame it on wear and tear and didnt want to give me any assistance with the repair. This has been an ongoing problem with many Impala and lumina lines for years, and should be covered under a recall.

Clunking noise in front end steering , went to dealer was told I would have to replace steering part that was beginning to seize , I think that this is a real safety issue seeing that if the steering seized I would be unable to steer the car.
I took my 2001 Impala to the gm dealer at 23k miles for a noise in the steering column, at that time they said they had to replace an intermediate steering shaft plus other issues non related. At 73k they removed the shaft and lubed it and replaced left outer tie rod for $510+. At 98k my front wheel hubs were replaced and they replaced the intermediate steering shaft again and charged me $125 for the shaft and another $975+ for the rest. When I took the car back two weeks later for yet another steering problem they said it was my rack and pinion this time and charged me $1083. That was today, tonight on my way home with my wife, the car did the same thing while turning right on an exit ramp. I called 1-800-gm and they said they could not do anything for me except offer me a gm loyalty cert good for some $ off a purchase of a new gm product. I have been faithful returning to the gm dealer each time with steering problems (and other issues not related) expecting a fix and over the almost 5 years and almost 100k miles and many dollars spent I have lost my faith in gm.

There is a clunking and clicking sound when steering. This is a known problem where a lot of consumers have complained about and Chevrolet will not fix the problem at no cost. Chevrolet said that they can either change the intermediate steering shaft or use the lubrication kit to fix it. They will not even use the lubricaton kit to fix it at least. This is not right that the consumer should pay for a mistake that the manufacturer created due to a lack of lubrication .

In March 2001 the dealer replaced on rack and pinion. In December 2001 the dealer replaced the steering gear shaft. In July 2002 the dealer lubricated the steering shaft but the noise is still present.
Clunking sound in steering and rack and pinion. Took car to century Chevrolet in watsonville CA and they said nothing was wrong with it. Took to anderson Chevrolet in cupertino in CA and they replaced rack and pinion. This did not correct the problem of clunking sounds over bumps and while turning at low speeds. At high speeds car wanders. I have two children and I am afraid that I am going to lose steering like others including police cars have. Now century Chevrolet says they want to lube the intermediate steering shaft, but NHTSA complaints indicate this has not worked for their same exact car with the same exact problem. I have an extended warranty and I want my car fixed before it runs out and I am tired of getting the run around in the mean time. I want the intermediate steering shaft replaced because I feel this is a real safety hazard.
When making turns in either direction, there was a loud popping sound. Dealer modified steering gear shaft pinion by installing a larger pin. Then, replaced gear steering shaft pinion, problem still exists.
