Steering Rack Problems of Chevrolet Impala

- the contact stated that every once in a while when she drove the 2006 Chevrolet Impala with(11718 failure mileage she heard a pinging noise, but the vehicle drove without a problem. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who needed to duplicate the pinging, but could not. The vehicle was taken to a dealer on another occasion and they replaced the rack and pinion, and since then the contact had not heard the pinging noise since. The current mileage was 12000.

: the contact stated that the vehicle veered extremely to the right during right lane change. When vehicle was immediately pulled over, the front driver's side tire was observed to be loose and wobbly. The vehicle was inspected by a certified independent mechanic who determined that the powersteering rack weld broke from the frame and needed to be replaced. The dealer was alerted but refused to repair the defect under warrenty. The incident occurred at 50 mph on the highway during dry road conditions. 08/02/06 updated.

Knocking noise & jolt in steering wheel of 2001 chev. Impala at approximately 40,000 mi. . This problem continued and worsened. It was determined by an indepentent auto shop and the dealer that the problem was a defective rack. Dealer gave me information to contact customer assistance at gm, which I did. Gm refused to make any concession for the repairs due to the fact that warrenty had expired.

2000 Chevrolet Impala has a leaking or seeping power steering rack at under 48,000 miles. Failure is very premature and costly, and has been documented on other Chevrolet Impalas. Chevy refuses to cover any portion of the costly (over $1,000) repair.

My car made a whining noise while moving and makes a loud noise when the steering wheel is turned. I took it to a Chevrolet dealer and they let me know my power steering rack needs replacing at 68,000 miles in February 2004. Needless to say this is not being recalled and this is something a lot of car repair centers are surprised this has failed on a 3 year old car. Chevrolet wants $1,000 to replace.
