5 Power Steering Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

The power steering has been lost on multiple times and now it happening more and more frequently. It has been happening during this past year. It usually happens without warning. The power steering light will come on and simultaneously the power steering is lost. It takes a great deal of effort to steer the car and move over or turn a corner. It's a critical safety factor! for an senior women, it's very difficult to maneuver. Luckily, it's only happened on city streets while in motion. It has come on when the car has stopped, like at a traffic stop. Usually, I can turn the car off and turn it on again. A dealership informed me that it was the power steering sensors and my car is not covered. There have been recalls on this problem for other 2007 Malibu's. I also have safety concerns because I transport my elderly mother. Can't understand why my car is not covered. Drivers seat belt is not engaged - indicator light shows problem that it is not engaged. Concerned it won't work in an accident.

6 Power Steering Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2019

On or around Feb 19, 2019 my power steering gave out while driving to work. I pulled over and restarted my car since it was almost impossible for me to turn the wheel. After restarting my car seemed to be fine. Until it happened again. The power steering light appeared on my dash and then again I could barely make any turns which is completely unsafe especially if I had to turn to get to a safe area to restart my car. After my own research, I called Chevrolet and I was told that there was a recall on a similar part that would cause the same things as I was having and if I took it into a chevy dealership and had it officially diagnosed as the same issue as the recall which was a torque sensor with the power steering shaft I would be able to get reimbursed for the $110 diagnosis fee and the cost of repairing the vehicle. On Feb 26 2019 is when I had my apt at camp Chevrolet in spokane, wa ph:5094440968. They informed me that in fact it was the same part as the previous recall but because my car had already been fixed by that recalled part, before I owed it, that they wouldn't cover that cost. I would not of taken it to the dealership if I wasn't informed that with proper diagnose I would be able for reimbursement. This is a very dangerous issue and it was not caused by erratic driving but a known issue that was identified enough to cause the recall in the first place.

Steering comes close to "locking" up, very hard to steer, mainly at slow speeds, but unpredictably and without warning. Power steering warning light comes on during the problem. Veh. Has just over 70,000 miles on it. Took it to Chevrolet dealer. Service manager advised that our car had been covered by gm special coverage # 15356, for this specific issue (electric power steering/torque sensor) but car was just beyond 10 yrs in service. He also noted that a recall had been issued by gm (# 14772), again for the exact issue, but our car's build date fell "in-between" covered build dates. Manager acknowledged that this issue is very common with our year and model, and similar models (pont g6 etc), and was a severe safety hazard. Repair estimate is just over $500. Manager contacted gm corp office to request coverage and was denied (case #: 8-3581641655). This veh is not safe to operate at this time.

14 Power Steering Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2016

The power steering light activated back last winter when I started the vehicle. I attempted to pull out of the driveway and I realized the power steering failed. I shut it off and called my work. I returned a few minutes later, started it up and the power steering was working. Just last weekend at 202,000 miles the power steering failed again and this time it continues not to work at all. The dealership says it will be about $1000. 00 to fix it, money I do not have at this time. Chevy knows there is a problem with the steering in these vehicles. Chevy needs to own it and repair the problem at no charge before someone gets seriously hurt or worse. I have owned several vehicles thus far in my lifetime and none off the vehicles ever had a similar problem. If my vehicle had less than 150,000 miles chevy would fix it so the letter that was sent to me states. Obviously the problem is a manufacture error and needs to be covered no matter what the mileage.

20 Power Steering Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/25/2015

In December, 2014, we purchased a 2007 chevy Malibu for our teenage daughter. End of February 2015, when in park with the motor running, the power steering light came on and the steering wheel would not turn ( like it is locked up). Shut the vehicle off and restart and then power steering would work. Called gm due to finding numerous complaints and recalls on the chevy Malibu regarding steering. I was told that my car, according to the VIN, was not under recall. Gm agreed to pay for 1 hour of diagnostics. Took car to a gm dealer to have two other uncompleted recalls on the Malibu taken care of. I noticed a clunking sound when turning into the dealership. A number of codes came up on the diagnostics relating to power steering and low voltage. Dealer said it would be a long shot but replacing the battery might fix the problem. I did not have the dealer replace the battery. Daughter drove the car a few days later and the car did the same thing numerous times (after starting the car the power steering light comes on and cannot turn the wheel). I will not let my daughter drive this car now as I am afraid the steering will lock up when driving. I drove the car the next day and when parked with the motor running the steering wheel would start turning by itself and make a growling sound. Our local mechanic witnessed the car's steering wheel turning back and forth when the car was idling and in park and no one touching the wheel. I have an appointment at the gm dealer this week for more diagnostics that gm says they will not pay for. Gm did advise me to call in from the dealership once the problem is diagnosed and they may or may not reimburse me for part of the cost of repairs. I did replace the battery today and the steering wheel is still turning by itself when idling.
