8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/29/2015

My steering wheel started making a grinding noise at a specific position on the wheel. Specifically right where you would keep the wheel to make the car drive straight. After 2 days of this happening, the power steering went out in the middle of my morning commute. I researched this and it is a known issue on chevy Malibus and has been recalled on the '05, '06 and '08 but for some reason was not recalled on the '07, even with this being a known issue on all other model years surrounding it. I had to replace the steering column entirely which ended up costing $1,300.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2014

I was driving on the highway then all of a sudden the car beeps and the power steering stops in the steering column and power steering flashes on the stereo screen. When I stop the car and start it back the power steering works fine. Sometimes it works as it should and sometimes it stops working mostly at higher speeds. I'll cut the car off at different times then restart it and the power steering works fine. It goes in and out often.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2014

While driving on a sunny afternoon at 50 mph, the power steering service message displayed on the radio and the electronic power assist went out. Was able to pull off road and into a gas station. Turned off car. When returned to the car, started the car and the power steering functioned fine. Over the past five weeks since the first incident of this happening, it has happened 6 additional times. Each time the problem resets itself once the car has been turned off, allowed to sit off for a couple of minutes, and then restarted. Other vehicles with similar electronic power assist motors have been recalled, but for some reason this model has not been recalled. A non-dealership automotive service center indicated that this problem was part of a recall, and refused to perform the service. Dealership was willing to perform the service, as long as I paid, since the VIN did not come up in the recalls for the electronic power assist. Dealership indicated that sensor in steering column was faulty, but to replace I would need to replace entire steering column.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

The problem started as a clunking noise when I would turn my steering wheel. Power steering would intermittently go out and come back upon restarting car. Now it's almost always gone and if it does work it goes out at any given moment, after dinging to let me know. After having my car looked at I found out the entire steering column needs replaced along with the electronic assist module costing me almost 1400. 00 in repairs for a faulty electronic power steering system. I am legitimately concerned for the safety of all '05, '06, and '07 Malibu drivers. This is so unsafe. I've come close to having an accident 5 times now due to this problem. When I called general motors the woman said that they changed the power steering on all Malibu's after '07 this tells me they know it's a problem but just don't care. They also offered to help pay for the fix with their 70,000 mile/5 year warranty, but won't recall the parts or vehicle and most fail around or after 100,000 miles. This is unjust and dangerous not only to the drivers of these cars but also to everyone else on the road.

16 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2014

(Chevrolet Malibu 2007) my power steering intermittently went out and the wheel jerks when your just sitting idle. Now my power steering is completely gone. Many Chevrolet vehicles had this exact issue and were recalled however they did not recall my vehicle. Gm dealership performed diagnostic test and informed me I needed to replace steering column which would cost $1000, they would not cover any of it. Im not happy with chevy and do not plan on purchasing anymore vehicles with them.

17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2014

The power steering will just stop working as you drive. It used to be that turning the car off and restarting it would reboot it, but now it is just not working. The dealer said it is the same unit as the cobalt and there was a recall on that, but that there has been no recall for the Malibu. Apparently there is a problem with these columns. The problem continues.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2013

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the steering wheel seized without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the mechanic diagnosed that the control module and the power steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. 20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

So was driving and the whole sterring wheel froze almost ran into a girl in the parking lot. . No manuel sterring nothing. . . Contacted gm customer service at 1-800-222-1020 that was a joke. All they do is play games. My case number is 71-1201539244 just wanted gm to pay for the defective parts. Gm did recall 2004,2005,2006 and 2008 then in 2009 put in the power sterring fluid instead of this electrical power sterring. . . Gm never recalled the 2007 ever though had the same problem as the other years that they did recalled. . I have spent over $2000. 00 to get a defective part fixed. Kevin specialist supervisor is a lame title for a customer service he called the dealer to have thme cover the cost and then told the dealer that g< will not pay never contacted me. . . Then I tired to get another customer service rep and e/maile gm and all they did was referred back to kevin which I have never heard from. . . Never----ever buy a gm vehicle. I my son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren could of died in this car cause it freezes the whole sterring column. Can you imagine if I was on the freeway what might of happened?.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2013

Driving in a straight line on a paved road and all of a sudden there was a ding and the words power steering appeared on the dash. Within seconds I could not steer the vehicle. I was able to pull over safely as there was very little traffic, but I couldn't turn the steering wheel. Had vehicle towed to garage. If I had been in heavier traffic or trying to negotiate a bend/curve in the road or been negotiating a turn across traffic this incident could have had a tragic outcome. Garage repaired vehicle but it has happened again today and we have to replace the steering column at great expense. Called chevy but they say there isn't a recall however it appears that the earlier and later models have been recalled for the same safety issue! researched online today and there appear to many complaints of accidents and near misses for the same issue of the 2007 models. This needs looking into urgently before someone loses their life.

24 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2012

Since July of 2012 my power steering was intermintent now as of sept 14th 2013 I dont have any power steering at all. The fuel light stays on, the gas gage fluctuates. I have had to drive without any power steering. I must use the car for transportation to and from work. I believe this is extremely dangerous to be driving a car with out power steering!!! I did bring it to the dealership where I purchased it and was told they were not sure replacing the steering column would fix the problem, and it would cost at least $750. 00!!!! please advise. I looked at the recall and the 2007 was not included this makes no sense to me. Obviously they know there is a problem with the steering in the Malibu. Thanks karen.

25 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle emitted a popping sound when turning. 26 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving at various speeds, the power steering suddenly malfunctioned and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. 27 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Noticed after I first purchased the vehicle that when ever pulling into traffic or just accelerating quickly at all the power steering will go out causing the wheel to be "straightened" back up which yanks the car really hard causing for quick correction which can lead to over correction and then a wreck. Very dangerous in the rain or snowy/icy conditions since it yanks the wheel back straight and causes the car to slide. When this happens you can hear audible clicking noise coming from the column and sometimes even the warning dinging that the traction control failed. Seriously needs to be fixed because eventually it will cause wrecks and quite frankly deaths! very frightening when this happens! and apparently its not just my car.

28 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2011

Omg I cannot believe nothing has been done about the power steering on the 2007 Malibu going out while you are driving. How many complaints are required for something to be done? I thought buy american was going to be the best. Gm fooled me. I have had several issues with vibrations, brakes, drums, rotors, steering column gears but this mornings near miss accident just takes the cake. I am driving to work 5:30am on interstate 58 in suffolk, va doing 60 when all of a sudden the wheel jerks me into the next lane of traffic almost driving under an 18 wheeler. I grasp the steering wheel as tight as I can trying to pull back into my lane with the wheel fighting me back and forth. What a horrific experience. I pull off (shaking my --- off) make a phone call, sit for 1/2 hour (still afraid to drive). While the car is idleing the wheel is bouncing back and forth in park. I put it in drive with my foot held tightly on the brake and it is still jumping. Put it back in park. Build up a little nerve. Put it back in drive and start to drive. Everything is fine. Get to work 5 minutes from there only to find that my car has an electronic power steering? some moron must have dreamt this up and gm needs to correct this horrible power assist crap before someone gets killed if they haven't already. I am not very happy with my chevy Malibu and I think a class action lawsuit needs to be filed for all chevy Malibu owners to make gm make corrections on this life threatening situation. Action needs to be taken now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

29 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2010

The first incident occurred in 2010, but has progressively become worse and most constant. The vehicles electrical steering will shake and jerk uncontrollably at times. The car does not always shake and jerk, but this occurs at least once per day. Some days it will shake and jerk non stop for long periods of time, others it will be short and quick. The car generally will shake and jerk for a few minutes, then will display on the display "power steering" and chime. The shaking occurs while driving and also when in park. Depending on the severity, the jerking can jolt the car into that direction. This is a safety hazard as it is very possible that this could cause an accident. The jerks are not controllable by two hands. Often while driving, the car looks as if it is jerking back and forth in its lane due to the rough jerking of the steering wheel. This is the most nerve racking while driving in weather such as snow or rain, where the road is slick or slippery. Having the car jerk around on ice is just an accident waiting to happen. When the problem first occurred, I took my vehicle to a gm dealership and had it inspected. The mechanic told us that the only option was to replace the entire steering column but they could not say if this would fix the issue. After reviewing many complaints and concerns online, I researched for recalls. I found that many models similar to ours have been recalled, but not our specific year.

30 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving at approximately 45 mph while turning left, a chime sounded and the steering wheel seized. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v064000 (steering). The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.

31 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

I purchase this car in 2009 in 2010 I was driving and the steering wheel lock up and then there was a display on the radio power steering I did not have any power steering. So I take the car to the dealer to see what going on and they told me I needed a power steering motor and shaft on steering column worn so I ask is there a recall for this and they said no not on your car. Ok so I paid 801. 99 to have the car repaired so in Dec,2014 I was driving to work and the same thing happen again my steering wheel lock up it was hard for me to keep the car in the lane because the steering wheel would jerk and to turn was very hard so I called gm corporate office to file a complaint are to see if there is a recall. Only on 04,05,06,08,09 but not the 2007. But when I google power steering on the Malibu all these cars had done the same as mine but there is no recall for 07 Malibu. So coporate tells me to take the car to the dealer to get dignoises and now its the torque sensor which is still in the steering column gm cant pay for it because it a different code then the first time it happen I think it is very dangerous to be driving and the steering wheel lock up while you are driving there should be a recall on 2007 Malibu power steering and torque sensor.

32 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2010

Yesterday I note that gm will be recalling 1. 3 million vehicles owing to a problem with the power steering electric motor with this recall being driven by NHTSA. Will the 2007 gm Malibu be included? since August 2009, my 2007 gm Malibu sedan has developed a "clunking noise" coming from the steering column. In September, 2009 we had a 'lube kit' installed which was suppose to eliminate the clunking. However during November the clunking noise returned aggravated by periodic error messages that state there may be a problem with the electric steering motor. During servicing on Jan 4, 2010 the dealer recommends that the "electric motor, steering shaft and column be replaced". However upon several discussions with gm headquarters in oshawa, onto, I am told that " there is an unresolved design problem with the mechanism and any replacement at this time will only be temporary". Also "because of no known serious accidents contributed to the mechanism, there will be no recalls or coverage under warranty". . Read more...

34 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

We own a 2007malibu lt. A clunk developed in the steering column at about 37,000 miles. It kept getting worse. The steering wheel shimmies. Our mechanic lubricated the steering column but said we may need the updated column. It is my understanding that other chevy owners have had similar problems and chevy is refusing to issue a recall. Do we have to wait until they start failing and cause accidents before a recall is issued?.

35 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2009

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact was attempting a turn at 10 mph when the steering wheel became extremely stiff. The contact was able to barely maintain control of the vehicle.
