Owner of a 2007 chevy Malibu. Had to replace fuel pump out of own pocket yet recall has not been extended to my VIN#. Also, while driving at a high rate of speed my power steering cuts out and the steering wheel is physically turns itself and locks the wheel throwing me into adjacent lanes and erratically moving my car on the road. This has been a safety recall on other 2007 chevy Malibus with the identical part number that is also on my car but after contacting gm I have been told that this is normal wear and tear on a vehicle and that to their knowledge it is safe for me to operate my vehicle, even though I have already had to repair 2 other recalls out of my pocket, had 2 taken care of by gm, yet now have an additional 3 or more parts on my car that are under recall but not extended to my VIN# but already showing identical symptoms for failure for parts that have been recalled. I feel like my life is in danger driving a vehicle gm is telling me that is safe. Not to mention the depreciation of the vehicle due to these mechanical issues. I have had numerous other issues with this vehicle and gm does not care about my safety or my money. I feel robbed.
After parking car briefly, came ou,t started it and steering hard, on center console was message for power steering. I looked for belts, thinking it had a pump and belt. It did not. Has electronic steering over hydraulics. Anyway turned key off and back on, steering was fine, this happened for a few days, some times you could cycle key once, others it could take multiple times. Also while sitting still and car running, steering wheel would jerk to left. I took car to local dealer for repairs. An electronic module had failed, causing progressive damage to steering column. Total cost$1199. 90. Looking online, recalls were issued for 2004-2006, 2008 and 2009 models having same issue. The warranties on these unit were extended til 10 years 150,000 miles. I have called gm and they have yet to give me a verbal response. If safety is such a huge concern of theirs, and steering is a safety issue. They should admit they have an issue, include the 2007 models and correct it.
I experienced my steering wheel lock up on several instances. I automatically started my car to go to work at 5am. When I arrived to my car to leave the wheel was tight to turn. I instantly panicked because I never experience this before. I turned the car off and restarted it was fine. It was frightening as I drove my car on the expressway over 10 miles to work. I figured maybe it was some strange glitch because it didn't happen again. Recently I have experienced this issue in the worst way. I can't park and it I so frustrating to even think how am I going to turn this car at traffic lights and corners. I believe the dealership does not want to repair it in a recall because it is quoted at a costly price. Why would they choose to put an electric power steering pump on this car? chevy was a brand I could trust. I' m not so sure about them now.
While driving my car in town going around 25-35 mph, the steering wheel became hard to control. The on board display showed "power steering". After a while the power steering turned back on. After a few weeks of this happening the power steering only works for the first few seconds when the car is started then you can hear a "click" sound in the steering column and the power steering turns off. Took to dealer #1, advised the entire steering column needs replaced. Took to dealer ship #2, advised the power steering module needs replaced. Tried switching out the fuses for the power steering, still no good. Advised that this is an electric power steering and there is no power steering fluid or pump. Advised by gm to take to dealer ship and have it looked at. Est. Cost to fix power steering is roughly $700 out of pocket. I currently don’t have $700 to throw at my car and still drive with no power steering. Gm as recalled chevy Malibu for power steering all except the year 2007. This needs looked into as it seems that there 2007 year is having problems as well.
