Power steering fails while driving, had to shut my car off while I tried to make a turn on the higway. The 1st time it happened at home on may 2020, car locked up and wouldn't move at all. Dashboard will say traction off, esc off and it won't let me move my steering wheel. I have to shut off the car and wait a few minutes for it to come back. Car is at roughly 133k miles and had no issues prior to this. Also, when I drive my front side of the car shakes as if it is going over stuff. I replaced both cv joints, gotten the car aligned, and balanced my tires and they still can't find the issue with it. Only recall that pops up is the electronic, but I believe it has the steering recall as well.
Power steering failure with eps service warning. Sudden loss of power steering and a warning that states service esc. When I turn off the vehicle and turn back on systems may return but eventually fail with sudden loss of power steering and esc. This occurs while driving or stationary intermittently at stop lights while driving and parked.
Power steering fails while driving. Dashboard will say "traction off, esc off" and I won't be able to move steering wheel. This has happened in busy intersections. I have to stop the vehicle and restart in order to gain power steering again. Mechanic has diagnosed it as torque sensor/steering column. This was recalled on many other Malibus, but not mine. A lot of people are having this same problem but weren't included in the recall. This has been happening since I purchased vehicle seven years ago at 80,000 miles (about once per year) and has gotten worse recently at 170,000 miles (multiple times per month). This is dangerous and very expensive.
Intermittent issue with power steering failure. This has happened while driving. So far, if I shut the vehicle down and restart, the power steering works again. But while driving the vehicle I feel a slight tugging to the right on the steering wheel. The tugging also happens when stopped if I slightly turn the wheel.
While operating my 2009 chevy Malibu 4cyl in a turn, the electric power steering without any warning failed. A warning indicator afterwards then flashed power steering and electronic stability control failure. The result was almost total loss of control of vehicle while driving in heavy city traffic going through a traffic circle with children in backseat of my vehicle. This is because without warning the electronic power steering failed which caused me to panic emotionally and also caused me great physical difficulty as I am a woman and I all of a sudden had to garner all this strength to manually steer the vehicle in heavy city traffic. Chevy is aware of this defect and will repair this if the vehicle is less than 10 years old and had less than 150,000 miles. We could have all died in a car crash. I think this should be recalled as this is a safety hazard that comes without any warning and renders the vehicle undrivable unless repaired as it is unsafe. The chevy mechanic indicates if both the sensor and motor need to be replaced it will cost $1200. 00. My husband is a veteran and we cannot afford this costly repair.
2009 chevy Malibu experienced intermittent power steering failures identical to the problem described in the gm #14116b product safety notice (document id 4006770), which affects some 2009 chevy Malibu. The issue often occurs when the vehicle it just started, then will go away once the car is restarted after it has warmed up. Gm says this safety recall in not applicable to our vehicle's VIN. I have no way to independently verify which torque sensor was installed in this vehicle, and wanted to report this issue.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 75 mph, the power steering failed. Also, the esc device, power steering, and traction control indicators illuminated. The contact had to use extra strength to steer the vehicle. The contact's parent had to come pick up the contact. The vehicle was not towed. The contact called kelley Chevrolet (5220 value drive, fort wayne, in 46805, (260) 484-5566) and was advised to call gm's customer service line. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 171,000.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving various speeds or while stopped, the steering wheel shook. Also, the power steering failed when the vehicle was started. The contact shook the steering wheel a couple of times to get it to operate. The failures recurred several times. The dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
Power steering failed while driving. Power steering and service esc warnings flashed on dashboard. Vehicle very difficult to steer.
The power steering failed and power steering came up on message board while backing out of driveway on 11-11-18. Afraid to drive vehicle drove vehicle around block without power steering just as I was pulling into driveway the steering came back. What happened. Worried in oregon.
Power steering fails often in cold weather but has grown to happen in warmer weather as well. Getting worse over the course of the last 3 years. Happens both in motion and stationary. Usually happens when turning the wheel but not always. There are recalls for this same problem with older model Malibus and other gm vehicles but not this model even though others have reported the same issue.
Only 90,000 miles on my car and just a few days ago the power steering would fail when starting up the car and I get warnings and chimes saying power steering then esc now disabled. This problem would correct itself if I turned off the car then turned back on again. A few days later that no longer worked to get the power steering to work/activate. Now I have to apply slight turning force to the steering wheel while starting the car to get it to work. But now I have a new issue to this problem as of today the power steering fails while driving the car. I was changing lanes and the power steering failed the steering wheel became very stiff and I almost crashed into the car in front of me because I could not complete my lane change. Im now scared to drive my car. I keep good care of my car and have it maintenenced well. Its in excellent condition and this is the only thing wrong. I tried calling gm to ask if this is a recall issue because I find everywhere online this is a major issue with my year and make but gm on the phone said my VIN has no recall and im stuck to pay full bill to fix and is not a defect or gm problem. I do not think this is my problem and is a defect. I feel gm should fix this. My car still has 2 years left on bank loan to pay off. I cannot afford to fix a manufacture defect. I also strongly feel this is a major saftey issue as this can result in major car accident. I do not have strong arms and I cannot operate manual steering to avoid crash if loss of power steering on highway at high speed or even in city at slow speed.
Power steering failed while on interstate, and caused the esc and traction to turn off as well. Cruise control continues to function. Shutting vehicle completely down and starting the vehicle again resets everything.
My Malibu has experienced an issue with the power steering torque sensor going out which causes the power steering to fail while driving. There is a recall on other Malibu vehicles for this issue, but not mine. We are having our vehicle fixed as this is a huge safety issue. I have seen other Malibus with this issue outside of the recall. Should the recall be expanded?.
My seventeen-year-old daughter was coming home from cheering at a basketball game at 9:30 p. M. She was driving up signal mountain from dunlap tennessee on hwy127 about three-quarters of the way up the mountain her power steering stopped working. While trying to get control of the car she was unable to make a turn and ran into the guardrail, destroying the guardrail and then shot across the road ending up in a embankment. Thank god she was not physically hurt. Her car is totaled and she is completely traumatized, having nightmares and not wanting to drive ever again. I never received a recall notice or any kind of warning that this was a possibility of happening or I would have most definitely had it fixed. The power steering head went out one other time before and she parked the car and by time my husband got to where she was the power steering was barking again we had the car inspected by a mechanic and he said he could see nothing wrong with it this was about a year ago so we just assumed it was a one-time occurrence little did we know it almost killed our daughter had this happened 15 ft sooner where there was no guardrail she would have went off the side of the mountain and more than likely died. It's very disturbing that I knew nothing very irresponsible of Chevrolet I do have a police report with all of this stated on it I was not able to get it at the time of reporting this that would be more than happy to send it if needed. At this time my daughter has no car she is a senior in high school fixing to go to college in less than a year so we are stuck paying for college and a car because she only had liability insurance. I think the recall number is n140115. 2009 Chevrolet Malibu power steering failure.
The car's power steering went out while I was in motion, turning in a parking garage. An error message displayed saying "power steering failure - service esc". The first time this came up was about three months ago, and I took it to the chevy dealership and they fixed it under warranty. This same problem just came up again and I am beginning to think that this is a known problem, given the amount of recall information I've seen about this issue.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 60 mph, the power steering wheel failed to turn left or right without warning. The contact pulled over to the side of the road, restarted the vehicle, and it returned back to normal. The failure recurred several other times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 224,000.

While turning (in motion) through a parking lot after exiting the highway, the vehicle jerked, and the power steering assist failed (it became very difficult to drive). The following message then displayed: service esc power steering.
Power steering failure @ approx. 152000 miles. I'd elaborate on the specifics, but gm knows of the issue and they timing of the occurrence can vary. Serviced "steering column bad" replaced. Not covered by special warranty outside of mileage. Fact: 162,283 gm vehicles of same model year were recalled (source gm website). Instead they chose to offer special coverage which expires clearly hoping to limit their loss from vehicles out of commission, those that never have problem, and consumer being forced to cover out of pocket.
My electronic power steering failed to operate while driving suddenly and without warning. Along with this happening, an esc inoperative light is illuminated along with a service power steering message on the instrument display. Vehicle steering very hard to operate. Have to turn car off and on multiple times to clear message and for some reason the power steering resumes to work. This now is a constant occurrence, to the point that I am unable to rely on this vehicle for safe travels.

Electric power steering intermittently fails. Eps warning appears on dic and hard steering until car is stopped and restarted. Failure happens when car is moving and stationary. Car is not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000 because it was manufactured in August 08 vs June 08. This recall must be expanded. A simple internet search can reveal that.

In past few weeks my veh. Power steering failed, and showed a code of problems with the electronic power steering system. Having taken it to Chevrolet to be repaired I found that many other vehs have been recalled for "electronic power steering problems". My year veh. Apparently has not been included in the current recall order. Having been advised by Chevrolet that this issue is a steering wheel position sensor, I believe that this proves that Chevrolet has not corrected the steering issues in their vehicles. I believe NHTSA should continue to carefully review Chevrolets manufacturing operations of this steering system, and force them to expand the recall to rectify whatever issues are found, before this occurs to someone else and a serious injury or death occurs.

While driving the vehicle an audible alarm sounded and a message appeared in the driver information console indicating a loss of power steering. The steering was barely functional and could have resulted in a crash if my spouse or children had been driving the vehicle. This condition occurred off and on for about a week before I could have it serviced at the local dealership. Upon a search of the internet for recalls, I noticed that my make, model, and certain vehicles manufactured the same year were part of a recall for the exact same problem that I had repaired - a faulty torque sensor in the power steering unit. My dealership informed me that my vehicle was not included in the safety recall. A call to the Chevrolet customer assistance center on 4-17-2015 was unsatisfactory. Chevrolet declined to reimburse me for repairs to my vehicle for the same issue that other Malibus, produced in the same year, were covered by a recall. I request the nhtsb extend the recall on the power steering failure to all 2009 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. I have read in online forums that many other owners are facing the same issue, and many are not having repairs made due to cost. This is indeed creating an unsafe condition to the owners and the motoring public.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving approximately 55 mph, the power steering failed and the steering wheel became difficult to steer. The vehicle was towed to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the torque angle sensor failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact notified the manufacturer of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.
While driving, power steering failed, heard a ding and a dash warning came on saying power steering/esc off. I took it to Chevrolet to have a brake recall performed and they looked at it saying it was the torque sensor. This item is a recall for over 1. 5 million Chevrolets but somehow, mine is the exception. I have fought with chevy over this and they refuse to fix it. Poor service. Poor company.
Power steering failed. Drove, parked, restarted and power stering returned. Went to mechanic and advised that sensor assembly needed to be replaced. Chevrolet dealer advised that car did not fall into recall n140115. I have read about many others with this problem that also do not fall into the recall time period. Possibly they need to extend the recall out if they have this many failures. By the way, I am a strong adult male and had difficulty steering without the power.
Power steering went out and on the digital display it stated power steering failed contact dealer immediately.
