3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2020

The steering column has a sensor that goes out and removes power steering. They recalled some of my year and model but my VIN is not on the list. It should have been included since it is having the same issue.

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

Was driving home from work on Friday and the power steering went out and I almost ended up in a field, could not turn it. Stopped and turned it off and back on again and it went back to normal, and it went out again as I was pulling into the drive. The next day I started car up and it had its warnings across my dash and the steering was out again. I just picked it up from the shop and it cost me $1562. 00 to get it repaired. The steering assist motor, a new steering column(electric) and r&r steering column w/sgl switch and new turn signal switch. It's all connected. I have yet to find a recall for my car on my VIN number but yet there were a few recalls on many cars including my 2009 Malibu for this exact issue but yet I never received anything in the mail about it. I hope that they intend on doing something about this, I could have been killed while trying to take a curve and had to struggle just to keep it on the road in the other persons lane until I could get pulled off the road and out of the way. From reading all that I have read on here it seems that I am not the only one with the issue.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2020

The electric power steering suddenly stopped working, and I was in danger of crashing the vehicle. The chevy dealership says its a problem with the steering column torque sensor, and that gm had a million car recall on this issue. However, they stated this safety concern had an expiration date and for my vehicle, it expired may 2019. It appears to be having exactly the same symptoms, with the same dangerous consequences, as those recalled vehicles, and yet gm will not take responsibility for this safety matter. This condition occurred intermittently, and then all of the time. It occurs when in reverse, and forward gears, when turning and when traveling straight. It occurs at all speeds. Again, the gm mechanics state the problem is the steering column torque sensor.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2018

While driving , power steering stopped work. Steering got real hard and became real hard to turn my vehicle. There also seems to be some play (twitch) in steering column when stopped at a red light or stop sign. After a restart, it went away but same problem came back again the next day. There was message on dash regarding esc sevice and power steering. It all sounds similar to the dorman recall on other gm vehicles.

7 Steering Column problem

Tl the contact called on behalf of the driver who owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 60 mph, the steering wheel seized and the electric power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the steering column torque sensor failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 155,207.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2017

While I was driving on a street I suddenly felt the steering wheel lock up on me making it extremely hard to turn. Thankfully I was able to get my car into a parking lot without causing an accident. I was then told my the auto shop that the issue was the steering column problem which apparently is a common issue with my car but for some reason my VIN number was not included in the recall?.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2015

Takata recall; steering column is loose(stationary, motion). Wheel bearings are bad. I took the car to a Chevrolet dealer(clemson rd. ). They were not able to find an issue. Everytime I maintenanceperformed I am advised to have the ;steeting column check, rattling and loose, maybe a piece of plastic?). My second trip to the Chevrolet dealer did not allow enough time for a diagnostic. I purchased the car used from united auto sales. The wheel bearings(motion) were bad when I purchased and the dealer (united car autosales). I replaced the wheel bearings once already and have to replace again. The car is making a clapping noise and speed is impeded.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

2009 Chevrolet Malibu. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle power steering problems. The consumer stated it was difficult to turn the steering wheel. He was informed the vehicle needed a new steering column.

11 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2014

The power steering gave out while driving. The car was difficult to control and required significant force to turn the vehicle to safely get off of the highway. This created a significant safety issue as the car was practically un-drivable. I immediately contacted my general motors dealership and asked if it was covered under the powertrain warranty or any recall (since it was a safety issue), which they responded it was not. To my dismay, I had the vehicle repaired at my local mechanic at a cost of $760. With the steering column replaced, the car is working well and there are no current safety concerns. Within a week of having my 2009 chevy Malibu repaired (receipt dated 3/25/14, I read that 2004-2009 chevy Malibu?s were being recalled because of a power steering issue. The description of the issue was identical to the situation I experienced with our 2009 chevy Malibu. I contacted gm customer service within a few days and they instructed me to wait a few weeks for the letters from gm telling me of the recall and detailing how to seek reimbursement. After waiting several weeks with no letter, I contacted gm customer service again and they informed me that my VIN was not covered under the recall, only certain VIN?s of the 2009 model year were recalled. I take extreme exception to this. The problem I experienced with my 2009 chevy Malibu is identical to the problem described within the recall. Additionally, the repair covered under the recall is the exact work that I needed to have completed to make my vehicle safely operable again. Either gm has made a mistake by not including my vehicle within the recall, or the extent of the current recall is not sufficient enough to encompass all 2009 chevy Malibu?s that have the part(s) that lead to an increased risk for failure and hence, increased risk of a crash.

12 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2014

While my husband was traveling on the interstate at appox. 75 mph. (cruise control was set), without warning, the steering wheel began to violently shake. Over a period of appox. 30 seconds, the traction control light flashed and all power steering was lost. He managed to slow the car and safely get to the shoulder of the road. The eps message was also flashing across the across the odometer. We monitored the NHTSA complaints since there were numerous complaints being filed regarding other consumers experiencing the same mechanical failure. We waited until 03/27/2014 to have the repairs performed, which consisted of the replacement of the steering column due to the failure of the power steering assist motor. Gm then issued a recall on 03/31/2014 to include select 2009 chevy Malibu's. However, when I contacted gm, I was told my VIN is not included in the recall and I will not subject to reimbursement for my repairs (totaling $773. 62). I spoke with numerous representatives at gm, and was told by each of them, that the recall is only for select vehicles and despite my claim that my car experienced the exact mechanical failure as listed in the recall, my VIN is not included and any claim I submit will be denied. I am applauded that defective equipment has been installed in my car (which has been involved in two other gm recalls such as the ignition switch and the shift lever indicator) and gm is refusing resolve this situation. I am turning to NHTSA for further investigation so all consumers affected, including myself, be properly reimbursed for the expense incurred to correct gm's already proven defective equipment. The extent of stress gm has caused my family by near tragic accident of my husband and the financial burden of paying to correct a problem they have already identified as a problem is unethical and criminal.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2014

While driving the elec. Stability control light came on and steering became difficult due to the power steering assist motor giving out. When this happen, the steering wheel would inadvertently move back & forth. The sensor in the motor and in the lower steering column both went out. This was an extremely expensive repair not to mention that I was traveling down a busy interstate and could had a severe accident.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2014

While luckily driving on city streets around 35mph the "power steering needs servicing" light came on. Thought it might need power steering fluid and was told my model didn't use fluid - it was all electrical in the steering column. Since it was still under warranty I took it the next day to the chevy dealer who sold it to me and was told it wasn't covered at a cost of over $600.

17 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

I am still in shock that there are still so many complaints with looks to be the same VIN that is being overlooked by gm. My car was fixed last year, yet it still feels unstable after having to pay 890 out of pocket for a new column. How can a company just pick some VIN's from that year, when it is obvious it has caused the same exact problems for vins that were not included. Are we suppose to hire a lawyer and pay even more out of pocket forth. Look at these complaints still pouring in. I will never be buying another gm vehicle due to the lack of responsibility, and I highly will be suggesting that anyone stay clear of them as well. A month after I got my car fixed they issued the recall, mine was not included and I cannot do a damn thing about it. Meanwhile others get their cars fixed, id like to know what makes mine so different that it doesn't qualify??.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2014

I bought my car new in 2009 and I only have now just a little over 40,000 miles. I am a single mom and my car is used for driving my 2 1/2 year old son to and from day care and myself to and from work. On February 3rd I noticed my steering wheel felt funny like something was loose, I didn't think anything of it until my traction light then suddenly started to go on and off in the morning on my way to work. By the time I pulled into work the power steering had gone completely out. I then pulled onto a side street in fear of getting into an accident, I'm small and weigh no more than 115 lbs, so it was extremely rough and scary to me. I stopped the car and shut it off after looking up on my phone about similar problems people have been having. I shut it off waited a few minutes then it was fine, until I put the car in drive then it went out again. I did this a few times in order to make it to work. By lunch time my car was running fine but still felt funny for the next 4 days. Friday 2/7/14 my cars power steering had gone out for good and the turning it on and off didn't help, I ended up paying $840 dollars to get the entire column replaced. That was out of pocket because of course this was not covered under the manufactures warranty or the pt warranty. A month later I heard about the recall, so I called the dealership, they heard nothing so I called gm, my VIN wasn't listed. I have called back several times since and check the "owner" section on gm's website and still nothing, and all they keep telling me is that only some were recalled and mine might not be apart of it even though after reading the recall, that is exactly what happened to my vehicle.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2014

Within a week of owning car error code p0011 camshaft alignment?came up. Dealer got light to go off. Said nothing was wrong with car. Electrical problems with power locks also, now my complete steering column is gone. 5 error codes c0545/c0561, non functioning electric power steering. I am lucky that I didn't die in this car or worse kill someone. I can't believe there is no recall on this car. Plenty of complaints online. Are we waiting for people to die???? seriously. My car is at the dealership today and gm district specialist is dealing with the customer experience department at the dealership to see what they can do. I think this will be the last Chevrolet that I ever purchase. Unsafe. I hope people know how to complain on here because there are a lot of complaints online. 2008 was recalled for same issues. Maybe they used some of their old parts in my car from 2008.
