Shift cable broke. When I went to park the car, the car kept moving. No injury, no damage. Looks like general motors safety recall number 12106, but dealer stated that the VIN was not under this defect. This is a major safety concern and if other vehicles are out there, then they should recall them all. I was never notified of this defect because my VIN was not on the list, and I believe that I have hit this issue. . . Updated 06/10/13 updated 06/17/2013.
2008 chevy Malibu. Consumer writes in regards to transmission defect recall notice. The consumer was informed the parts were not available, despite receiving a recall notice in the mail.
I have had to replace the transmission already on this car, and it still is not right. The power steering will be gone no matter the temperature, but then comes right back. The brakes are always going bad on it, I have replaced them several times within the 25k miles of owning the car. The driver seat leans to the left and did not know this was not normal until after reading reports of it being a problem in this car.

Transmission forgets how to shift when driving uphill at around 65 mph and rpms start bouncing between 2000 to 2400 rpm. This will continue for quite some time and typically happens when outdoor ambient temp is above 90f. This problem causes a serious safety issue on the highway as cars are bearing down on you at 70 mph plus and your car refuses to accelerate. This car is a death box and disaster waiting to happen. I guess before anyone will do anything about it people have to die first. This vehicle has been to the dealership more than 4 times for the issue and they always say it can't be replicated and have reprogrammed the computer. The 2010 chevy Malibu is a lemon! the problem began occurring after 1000 miles and we have given up taking it to the dealer to get fixed. It is obvious they have no clue how to fix it and refuse to acknowledge the problem. We now have 19000 miles on it and the problem never goes away. I wish we could burn this car to the ground. I have documented many other Malibu 2. 4l owners with the same issue.

In hot weather - over 90 f - on inclines at 40-60 mph the car surges, acceleration repeatedly surges and hesitates and rpm occilates rapidly between 2000-2500 rpm. Problem is intermitant and difficult to reproduce. Refered to by others as rpm bounce. Occured approx 10 times summer 2010 and approx 8 times summer 2011 to date. . Read more...
Vehicle would not recognozie that vehicle was in park.
My 2008 chevy mailbu's shifting cable broke. I was driving it and went to park and it would not go into park however I had it in park on the gearshift. When I exited the vehicle it rolled forward. I had to set the emergency brake to keep it stopped. My car is at the dealership right now and I was told it was not covered under the powertrain warrenty. Since the 2009 Malibu has the same problem and there is a recall on the shifting cable clip, I feel the 2008 chevy should be included and I should not have to pay for it.
2010 Chevrolet Malibu. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle transmission problem the consumer stated while driving 30- 40 mph frequent shifts in the transmission were strong enough to exhibit a slight buck. The dealer was unable to diagnose the problem.

I just took delivery of a 2010 Malibu with 50 miles on the odometer. After leaving the dealership I went to accelerate onto a highway. At this time the car didn't move. The engine didn't rev and the trans felt like it was in neutral. Next the trans slammed into gear and the car accelerated as it should. Not too safe.
On June 29, 2010 my son was able to bypass the safety lock switch on our 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. . . . We took the vehicle to the dealer on June 30 and had the switch replaced along with a drivers side door handle my wife pulled off the door in a frantic frenzy to try to stop him. On July 8th while tightening down my child's car seat, my son again was able to bypass the safety switch by turning the key to the acc mode of the ignition and pushing the button on the shifter, he then started the car and began dragging me across a parking lot into a cement light pole. When we called gm to inform them that this should be a safety concern that children can bypass this switch, they informed us the vehicle isn't designed for a two year old!!!!!! they also referred us to the owners manual claiming that this is a dinghy towing option. In that section it tells you to place the parking brake on. In three other areas the book claims that you must push the brake to get the shifter to move from park. My son never touched the brake pedal, and the car came out of park and began to move. . . While I understand than my child is well below driving age, I do believe that gm has a serious safety problem here. While my insurance is covering the damages and not gm, I would think that they would at least want to look at this as a potential for a huge liability claim. . . . . . I hope that someone can get through to them before someone seriously gets hurt or killed.
I own a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu while driving 38 mph when I took my foot off the accelerators the car lost power and after I depressed after a few minutes the vehicle speed increased this has happened numerous time my wife is afraid to drive it I took it to the dealer the dealer first said it was the transmission when I took it back to have it repaired general motors said it was in the computer it did not solve the problem I then was told to use hi test fuelthe current mileage is 1923.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the transmission would intermittently shift into fourth gear when driving 20 mph and over, causing the transmission to jerk and pull the vehicle with a strong forward force. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times yet the failure was unable to be duplicated. The manufacturer was contacted but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 1,300 and the current mileage was 6,333. Updated 12/15/10. The consumer stated at times, the transmission would miss gears. Updated 12/27/10.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact was driving at an unknown speed proceeding to a complete stop. Suddenly, during acceleration from the full stop within a few seconds the vehicle failed to accelerate. The failures occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection; however, the technician stated the vehicle was functioning properly. The contact had concerns of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 500 and the current mileage was 2,600. Updated 12/30/09 the consumer stated the engine hesitated for nearly a second when the accelerator was applied. Updated 12/30/09.
Bought a new 2009 Malibu with a six speed automatic transmission in sept. '09. I noticed the problem after about a week and a half or driving the car. I feel a hesitation, then jerk when resuming acceleration while traveling 5-35 mph after having decelerated to the lower speed from a greater speed. It happens consistently while driving, but does not occur when acceleration begins from a stop or at speeds greater than 35 mph. Brought the car to the dealer, and transmission was reprogrammed and updated twice. Because the computer is reading everything as normal, gm will approve no work on vehicle. So far gm has said there is nothing they will do to solve this problem.
Own a 2009 Malibu that hesitates when trying to accelerate into traffic, or slow down and try to pick up speed again brought it to dealerships attention every time I take it in for service, they say this is normal and nothing is being done to fix the problem, this is going to cause an accident or death in this make of car.
Owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu, vehicle hesitates while accelerating, when in gear hesitates when you accelerated to move vehicle into traffic, vehicle move very slowly, the rpm show engine high but vehicle move slow, been inform by dealership that this is common with this type of transmission on this vehicle, and nothing can be done to fix it, gm has been inform and nothing is being done from that end, this vehicle is an accident waiting to happen, it is unsafe.
I have found that in my 1999 Chevrolet Malibu that when the key is in the accessory position in the ignition that the car can be shifted out of park without the application of the brakes.

The contact's relative owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitates while accelerating. The failure was noticed while driving 55 mph. The vehicle has a 6 speed automatic transmission that hesitates, but the dealer cannot repair the failure. The dealer stated that this was a standard feature on this type of transmission, which was tested by gm. The contact asked the dealer to install a four cylinder transmission from the Chevrolet impala, but gm refused without providing an explanation. The current mileage was 1,300 and the failure mileage was unknown.
The chevy Malibu ltz spring edition 4 cylinder engine 6 speed transmission has a very serious delay or lag in communication between the engine and the transmission. At times, the lag is so severe that when the response time does finally register for the vehicle to accelerate and then attempt to stop, the vehicle still intends to go ahead as planned prior to the braking of the vehicle. This occurs at any time, hot or cold engine, during hot weather and on short drives or long ones. The dealer and gm has finally acknowledged there is some short of problem; numerous attempts to correct the problem through software updates have been unsuccessful thus far.
Started off from a stop sign. Began to accelerate and turn (accelerations less than half throttle) and steering wheel jerked and became extremely difficult to steer. I let off the accelerator and vehicle shifted into second gear and finished the turn. Then accelerated again (about half throttle) and steering became stiff again but manageable and the warning bell chimed 4 times, however there were no alarms on the driver information center or the instiment cluster. I am, for the 3rd time taking my vehicle to the gm dealership service department hoping for a fix. This vehicle seems to be unsafe for my family and I. It only has 37,000 miles!!!.
The power steering goes out intermittently on my 2004 chevy Malibu. This tends to happen during summer months, particularly July-September when the weather is more humid than any other time of the year. I took the vehicle to a trusted auto mechanic who told me that when he connected the car to his diagnostic computer there was a reading stating that the power steering needed to be replaced. I have done nothing since that time which was around the summer of 2007.

My car is a 1998 Malibu LS. It has 49,500 original miles on it. In 2006 I had problems with the transmission, it didn't want to switch gears right away. I took it to our gm dealer as I had a warranty. They put it on a computer, couldn't find anything, they stated it was doing the things I said, but thought it was just a glich and would go away. 5-17-07, something finally happened to the transmission, the car didn't want to go anywhere. I coasted my car to the gm dealer and told them what happened. They called and stated they opened the transmission and found it was a stuck body valve. I told them to fix it as it was still under warranty. They already had the transmission opened up, they called me back and said the warranty company said my warranty had expired 1-14-07. Can't be, I had till August. I called the warranty company. I bought my car 8-8-98, I purchased the extended warranty (5 years) I had till 8-8-93. In January of 93, I got calls from mvp (motor vehicle protection corp) telling me that I should start thinking about a new warranty as mine was to expire that year. I told them I was okay till August. A gal named abbey told me that I could sign up for the warranty and they would note my account, put on hold till August when my warranty with gmac ran out. I now could make payments on the new warranty, it would be paid for by August. I agreed. Now this company is denying me coverage for the repairs to my car. They state the warranty expired 4 years from the day I made my first payment to the warranty company. That was not what abbey told me. She said that it would not go into effect until my gmac warranty was done. Now I have to pay $1,300 for an rem valve that went bad in my transmission plus labor. I feel I have been taken by the dealership and warranty company and no one will help me. I've tried talking to the dealership they say there is nothing they can do, I have to pay it. The warranty company is rude to me & I feel this is fraud.

Per gm document id#2030341 - 06 Malibu will shift into lower gear and stay in it until you stop and cycle the engine to off and then back on-been to the shop for repairs 4 times and 2 attempts attempt final repair 6 total and keep coming up with the same findings -none- they know about the problem with the above mentioned document- no one has attempted to replace any thing in the transmission or replace the sticking valves that are causing the problem but they all agree its a problem inside the transmission. Gm has told me that they don"t intend to do anything to solve this problem and has suggested for me to contact the bbb for further assistance in this matter. Started taking it to the dealer after 6 mo after buying and about every 4-6 mo until now- since the computer says no problem no one will make the call to change out the transmission or the sticking valves that are causing the problem- this could be dangerous if on take off it hangs up in the lower gear and the person behind me thinks I am going to get out of the way and the car will not go and rams me in the rear- all because the trans will not change out or if on the highway and it decides to shift into lower gear- not only will damage to the cars engine but could be fatal to the person driving. Please advise where to look for all problems with this car. Bought the car new and have had problems with this not wanting to shift about every 4-6 months. Sort of nerve racking when on the way home from work at midnight and the car will not go no faster than 25-35 mph with 4500 rpms then they tell me nothing is wrong because the computer says so. Thanks for you help susan headrick updated 08/15/08.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While turning the steering wheel at 5 mph, the contact heard a thumping noise coming from the steering column.
