1 Battery Dead problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/26/2021

When vehicle is placed in park, get "place in park" message on dash. If not cleared, dash lights stay on and drain battery leaving driver stranded. This could lead to a very unsafe condition, depending on where this occurs. Doing a search of the first 70 claims on your site; 30% of them addressed this issue. Why has nothing been done to rectify this unsafe condition? claim #'s looked 11385598, 113384695, 11377868, 11377077,11373245, 11372867, 11367012, 11365172, 11363789. 11363275, 11361450, 11360384, 11360062, 11355051, 11353844, 11352179, 11351612, 11351422, 11350951, 11349692, 11348857. There is a service bulletin # 19-na-206 by gm (see attachment) on this issue, but it does not cover the repair under warranty, even though it effects several years and makes. This would seem to be a manufacturer defect or qc problem, not something induced by the operator. Though no deaths or injuries have been reported by this problem, one could speculate there may have been some or could be. Usually the question of your battery being dead is not asked at the death or injury site. This issue can not always be duplicated at the dealership, so is often turned away. This particular vehicle will do this multiple times and than stop for awhile, than act up again. Each time it has been taken in to be looked at, there are no codes, and the symptom can not be duplicated. Drive it home and it will happen again, or not. Last time it took twenty minutes of turning car on and off, shifting in and out of park, etc to get car to sense it was indeed in park. I am submitting this report for a friend but would like all follow-up information to pass onto him.

3 Battery Dead problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/05/2020

My car had only 600 miles and is brand new. After sitting on the drive overnight the car wouldn't start. There was a lot of clicking noises, but the engine wouldn't turn. That was three weeks ago. I brought it to the dealership and they said that there were error codes on the battery, and that they recharged it. Today, the car clicks and won't turn over again. The car now has 1000 miles. The dealership told me that cars driving by their lot at night will cause random parked new vehicles with no key in it to flash lights, and use other electrical components randomly and it kills the batteries. I think this is a major concern. I park the car regularly in public lots at the airport. I can't have my car battery dead all the time simply because it decides to turn on as other cars drive by.

4 Battery Dead problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/21/2020

Two times in 24 months and approximately 62,000 miles the primary 12 volt battery has failed. This failure causes the trunk lock to become inoperable. The trunk cannot be accessed in this situation. Because the trunk will not open there is no access to the failed 12 volt battery. Also there is no way to fold the rear seat backs as the release levers are located in the trunk. This situation is both a safety dangerous hazard and inconvenience. Both of these occurrences happened while the car was parked in our garage.

5 Battery Dead problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 11/08/2019

When I first purchased the vehicle the engine light would constantly come on and go off but now the engine light is always on. I just recently started having issues with the airbags on the passenger side not being engaged and the engine esc comes on whenever it pleases, even when the weather is good outside. Last weekend, my battery died for the first time, I'm just glad that I had someone to jump me off. My primary concern is my headlights. I have gotten pulled over by the police 3 times due to my intermittent headlights. The first time my right side headlight went out, a officer pulled me over and informed me of the issue, so I got it fixed the very next day. A week goes by and I get pulled over again and the officer informed me but this time I informed the officer that I just changed the bulb a week ago and he mentioned that it could be the wiring. After the officer left, I got out my car and hit the headlight with my fist and it came back on just to go back out the next day. I went to my local mechanic and he changed the light bulb socket. That only lasted 3 or 4 weeks and now I literally have to ride with my headlights on bright or can't be out at night. After going to multiple auto shops, they all says that it's the wiring, which I already knew because the gages on my dashboard lights up like christmas lights every other day.

6 Battery Dead problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 10/15/2019

I have a 2014 chevy Malibu LS. About a year ago while at a stop light the car engine shut stopped working, and all the lights came off. I had to get the assistance of a police officer to control traffic away from my car, until the tow truck arrived and towed it to the shop. I was told that the auxiliary battery was bad, and had it replaced. The car it worked well. In August of this year the car engine began shutting off, while I was driving, and sometimes after it was parked overnight. I had the batteries checked, and was told that they were bad. I live in az, and the weather here is very hot, both were replaced on August 27th and 28th, less than 2 months ago, with two new batteries. The car worked well up until this evening, when it shut down completely as I was driving into my yard. All the lights came off, and I cannot get the key out of the ignition. I am glad that it happened when I entered my yard and not while I was driving on the freeway. Will tow it to the shop in the morning to find out what the problem is now.

7 Battery Dead problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/15/2018

This was 3rd time I took the car into the dealer because the service engine soon light appears randomly and the ignition fails to turn on. I have to turn the key a few times to get it started. My car was seen thurs, was told no issue was found and manager would drive car home in evening to test. Called today, Friday in afternoon since I didnt get a call, was told it was the battery. Had to pay $260 for battery. The past two other visits, I was told battery was good and now its bad. . . Was just leaving the dealer, I stopped at first light and notice the check engine light is on! returned back to dealer and was told that it was something else. Nothing to do with battery yet according to them, they said it was because of the battery. My car was left for the 4th time in dealership so they can look at it. A code appeared and tech told me it had to do with the auto stop! this has been going on since end of Jan!! please investigate. I have seen a lot of complaints about this issue. . I am the original owner. I bought car oct 2015. I dont understand how the battery had bad cells all of a sudden.

8 Battery Dead problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/05/2018

Starting in October 23, 2017 got in the car started it and it started but dashboard lights did not come on. Proceeded to drive home the dashboard never came back on. I got in the car the next day the dashboard lights came on. . I took it george matick Chevrolet on October 24, 2017 and they were unable to diagnose anything, the car continued to do the same with the lights blinking on and off including the signal light while driving until one day the dashboard was completely black and the battery died completely down and I had to have the car towed to george matick chevy on January 31, 2018. Once again they said they couldn't diagnose anything boosted the car and that's it. Still to this day the car continues doing the same and the dealership is saying nothing is wrong. I feel unsafe and believe this is electrical and wonder if the car will catch on fire. I also wonder if it will start up every day and what is going to happen when I drive it. Every single day it is doing this. I keep contacting the dealer and they basically are saying if the machine cannot do anything they cannot help me. I want to know if there is another way this issue can be checked or if I have to trade in a car that I just got over a year ago. They want me to bring it in and keep paying for diagnostic testing to tell me nothing is wrong. I am no mechanic but I do know that the dashboard instrument panel indicator light signals etc should not blink while driving and the dash should never go black while driving. Please help me because I am really afraid to drive and cannot get anyone to understand this is a safety hazard when you cannot see your speed, gas level, etc. In addition when signals are blinking and going crazy for no reason the car behind me could hit me. So this happens now in motion every single day on streets, highways. Turning or going straight.

10 Battery Dead problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/11/2017

Car is causing the battery to go bad. When the battery goes bad the whole car starts acting up; lose power steering, steering wheel locks up, dash lights flicker until turned off, in dash screen turns off before car dies. After I bought the car three months later my battery went bad (car started acting funny and gradually declined in quality over a week's time) I replaced the battery and now 2 years later the battery is bad again. This is a dangerous car to be in as the whole car dies while driving and the steering wheel locks up on the highway. This happens while driving. It has happened on the highway, interstate, parking lot and city street. Two different batteries should not go bad before there life time. I believe this has something to do with the car itself and also the car should not be designed for the steering wheel to lock up and remain solely on the normal battery.

12 Battery Dead problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/20/2017

While traveling at a slow speed (betw 10-20 mph) on 3/20/17, the car started to shake, the service esc message light turns on, and service traction control light turns on (with message that car will power down). So, if I pull over to the side of the road and shut the car off (before it shuts down on it's own), wait 2 minutes for the computer to reset, then get rpm up quick (so the speed is quickly above the 20 mph), then it is wouldn't do it and I could get it to the mechanic. When the mechanic went to check it, the battery was dead, so no luck with computer scan. He put in new battery. So I drove it and it did it again. I took it to the mechanic and he checked it and he replaced the gas pedal (computer code indicated a bad sensor). However, it did not take care of the issue. Brand new battery and still draining battery (overnight). Mechanic thinks a relay may be staying open somewhere however isn't sure. Currently not drivable due to the shaking and that service esc and service traction control messages come on with statement that vehicle will power down (while driving). First occurred on 3/20/2017 and is still occurring 4/20/2017 (mechanic hasn't been able to fix)! been dealing with a slow battery drain since purchased car in July 2016. If didn't drive car for 5 days, battery would be dead (4th day was still ok). Then in March 2017, other issue started and the battery drain became much worse. Now brand new battery and will drain completely dead overnight. Huge electrical issue. Car has 85,000 miles on it.

Failure Date: 10/23/2014

I parked my car and locked the doors up for the night, just like every other night, but the next morning when I tried to start my car the battery was dead. I knew I had not left anything on to run it down. After getting the battery charged and my car started I headed off to work about 5 minutes into my drive my door locks started going crazy unlocking them selves and making a clicking noise this continued for about 10 minutes when I got to work I locked the car up and went to work got off work to find out the battery again was dead. And this time my doors were unlocked. I had this problem on and off for the next week until I had to buy a new battery. The new battery seemed to fix the issue so I thought. But once again it started unlocking its self repeatedly, I have gotten use to it acting up and pretty much over look it when it does it, but it still happens a few times a week.

16 Battery Dead problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

When we got the car we loved it. After 4500 miles the battery died had to wait 3 days for the dealer to get us a new one. Great car ran fine then after 15,000 miles the check engine light came on and was told that it was something to do with a valve sensor. Dealer fixed it as it was under warranty. Then at 65,000 miles then check engine light came on and was told it was the valve sensor again. They brought it in the garage and said they couldn't replicate the check engine light coming on. So around 79,000 miles all the door locks stopped working. Now when my wife was driving it tonight the car started "chugging" and the check engine light came on again. The chevy reps. Said all they can do is give me a 500. 00 rebate for a newer car.
